This is a compilation of the work of various illustrators, artists and friends, portraying one or more dictators of their choice, from a ranking of the most fearsome of fallen toltalitarian rulers. Carefully arranged by the cost in human lives, it is also a chance for you to colour in, as you like, so you never forget about the disastrous effects of greed and unlimited power.


AUGUSTO JOSÉ PINOCHET UGARTE (1915 - 2006) Chile. Committed torture and mass murder to suppress opponents of his brutal regime. Abolished democracy, dissolved the National Congress, banned all political parties and demolish civil rights like freedom of speech, information, reunion and movement and violated human rights. Time in Power: 17 years Estimated People Killed: 3,000 Death: Dies of congestive heart failure. Illustration: DVF (Ex BRP)


NICOLAE CEAUSESCU (1918 - 1989)

Romania.

Characterised by nepotism and civil liberties severely curtailed. His most appalling legacy is the thousands of filthy, neglected children rescued from the orphanages and institutions he claimed did not exist. Time in Power: 15 years Estimated People Killed: 5,000 Death: Execution by firing squad.

MUAMAR EL-GADDAFI (1942 - 2011)

Libya.

Various human rights abuses like torture and extrajudicial executions (most notably in the Abu Salim prison), severe repression, pervasive surveillance of civilians and sponsorship of terrorism. Time in Power: 42 years Estimated People Killed: 6,000 Death: Mutilated and executed forces.

LAURENT-DÉSIRÉ KABILA (1939 - 2001) Congo.

Characterised by authoritarianism, corruption, and human rights abuses. Accused of self-aggrandizing tendencies, including trying to set up a personality cult. Killed tens of thousands on route to power and banned all opposition parties. Years in Power: 4 years Estimated People Killed: 13,000 Death: Assassinated by his bodyguard.

FULGENCIO BATISTA (1901 - 1873) Cuba. Suspended the Constitution and revoked most political liberties. His increasingly corrupt and repressive regime presided over a stagnating economy that widened the gap between rich and poor Cubans. Time in Power: 7 years Estimated People Killed: 20,000 Death: Dies of a heart attack, two days before a team of assassins from Castro could carry out a plan to assassinate him.

ANASTASIO SOMOZA DEBAYLE (1925 - 1980)

Nicaragua.

Maintained power through martial law. Opponents faced torture, rape and murder. Estimated 50,000 killed during the Nicaraguan “revolution�, 120,000 exiled and 600,000 made homeless. Time in Power: 12 years Estimated People Killed: 50,000 Death: Assassination in exhile.

RAFAEL TRUJILLO “EL CHIVO” (1981 - 1961) Dominican Republic. Killed his opponents and murdered thousands of haitian migrants. A program of “Dominicanisation” is introduced along the border. White immigrants are encouraged to settle in the region and an anti-Haitian propaganda campaign is launched, eventually becoming formalised into an ideology known as “antihaitianismo”. FRANCOIS DUVALIER “PAPA DOC” (1907 - 1971)

Haiti.

His rule, based on a purged military, a rural militia and the use of a personality cult and voodoo, resulted in the murder of an estimated 30,000 Haitians and an ensuing a large-scale emigration from which the country has still not recovered. Time in Power: 14 years Estimated People Killed: 60,000 Death: Dies by heart attacks and diabetes.

BENITO MUSSOLINI (1883 - 1945)

Italy.

The father of fascism. After destroying all political opposition through his secret police and outlawing labor strikes, he consolidated his power trasforming the nation into a one-party dictatorship. Supported Hitler in World War II. Time in Power: 13 years Estimated People Killed: 300,000 Death: Executed by italian partisans.

ION ANTONESCU (1882 - 1946)

Romania.

Convicted war criminal. Believed that he had been chosen by “higher powers” to usher in a golden age in Romania’s history. The Prime Minister and Conducător during most of World War II, he presided over two successive wartime dictatorships.

FRANCISCO FRANCO Y BAHAMONDE (1892 - 1975)

Spain.

Tortured and murdered tens to hundreds of thousands. Led the Nationalists to victory in the civil war and went on to become the longest ruling dictator in European history. Time in Power: 39 years Estimated People Killed: 500,000 Death: Heart failure.

SADDAM HUSSEIN (1937 - 2006)

Iraq.

Numerous human rights violations and mass murder of hundreds of thousands of people. Anyone whose ideas came into conflict with those of the Baath Party leadership would be subject to summary execution. Time in Power: 24 years Estimated People Killed: 600,000 Death: Execution by hanging.

POL POT (1925 - 1998)

Cambodia.

Imposed agrarian socialism, forcing urban dwellers to work in collective farms and forced labor projects.The combined effects of executions, forced labor, malnutrition, and poor medical care caused the deaths of approximately 25 percent of the Cambodian population. KIM JONG IL (1941 - 2011)

North Korea.

Ruled as an isolationist. Many nuclear weapons and dangerous nuclear diplomacy were developed under his rule. He led to throwing of hundreds of thousands people in prison and led to military skirmishes. Time in Power : 17 years Estimated People Killed: 3,000,000 Death: Dies of a heart attack.

JOZEF STALIN (1878 - 1953)

URSS.

Consolidate power through expanding the functions of his role, all the while eliminating any opposition. Millions of people died due to the gulags (main Soviet forced labor camp systems), the purges and the Ukraine’s famine. Time in Power: 30 years Estimated People Killed: 6,000,000 Death: : Dies of a brain haemorrhage.

ADOLF HITLER (1915 - 1945)

Germany.

Leader of the Nazi Party, proclaimed discrimination and racism, totalitarian rule, including demolition of civil liberties. Responsible for Holocaust in order to end Jews and European division after World war II. Time in Power: 12 years Estimated People Killed: 12,000,000 Death: Suicide by gunshot.

MAO TSE-TUNG (1893 - 1976) People’s Republic of China. Notorious for burying alive hundreds of scholars. His oppressive policies caused the deaths of tens of millions of people during his reign, more than any other XX Century ruler. Time in Power: 27 years Estimated People Killed: 45,000,000 Death: Dies of a heart attack.
