Notice Board The Railway Children

Stage version by E. Nesbit adapted by Mike Kenny and directed by John Roth If ever there was a ‘timeless’ classic tale, this is surely it. There have been many stage adaptations, but the one by Mike Kenny for the now famous presentation at Waterloo Station, later at Kings Cross, is the one chosen for their Christmas production. This is loosely described as the ‘Adult’ version, but do not let this influence you, since it is basically nostalgic: all it needs, as Mr. Kenny points out, is imagination, and as Bobbie says in the very opening: ‘Do you remember? We were the Railway Children.’ Call the box office (between 10am - 7 pm only please) on 07484 927 662 or at Saturday 9th - Saturday 16th December, Evenings 7.45pm except Sunday at 3pm Second matinee at 3pm Saturday 16th December • No performa nce on Wednesday Richmond Shakespeare Society at The Mary Wallace Theatre, The Embankment, Twickenham, TW1 3DU

The Christmas Dinner Richmond

O YOU WANT TO JOIN AN AMAZING group of local volunteers who are coming together to provide a scrumptious meal and a special and fun-filled Christmas day for young adult care leavers between the ages of 18 and 25 who otherwise would be alone on Christmas Day? Founded by poet Lemn Sissay in 2013, the idea is spreading around the country and in 2017 Richmond is taking it up, only the second London Borough to make this happen. The Christmas Day Dinner is happening on the 25th itself in a stunning location very near to Bushy Park. 50 young local people are invited, who have just left the care system, to a once in a life time dinner. The event will create a special day for people who may never have had that experience or even more, had very negative experiences at Christmas. People of all ages and backgrounds are pooling their energies and resources to create a

traditional, family-feel Christmas Day. Help is needed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and with the clean up on the 27th December. You could be decorating the venue, wrapping presents, making the venue look wonderful. Or could you help by transporting items to and from the event. Would you make an entertaining Maitre d’? They also need kitchen helpers, washer uppers and people who help clear away. Funds are needed to help pay for taxis for guests (there’s no public transport on Xmas Day). Many guests will never have had presents at Christmas before so we are appealing to local business to help to0.

Celebrated TEDx Talk Returns

ED TALKS ARE INFLUENTIAL PRESENTATIONS given by people who have credibility in a field and have ideas worth sharing. The topics are wide ranging and the audience for online videos is global. On 20th January 2018, you can see some new TED Talk speakers in person at the Rose Theatre in Kingston when TEDx KingstonUponThames presents a full day programme of live talks on the theme ‘Out of Order’. The only constant is change. It’s all around us - at home, at work, online, offline, in our city streets, our phones and in the way we view the world. Change is disconcerting yet exciting and that is why they have chosen to explore the theme of ‘Out of Order’ for the event at the Rose Theatre, Kingston. ‘Out of Order’ can have many different interpretations. The phrase can indicate change, disruption, sub-cultures, a broken situation, radical solutions or a different way of looking at things from technology and design to adventure, culture and the way we live and work now and in the future. The speakers will delve into a wide variety of challenging topics such as:

Managers – Who Needs Them How to Feed 9 Billion People Could a 4 Year Old Change the World Challenging the Middle Eastern Myth TEDx is a global programme of independentlyorganised events based on the world-famous TED Talks model. Through a day-long event of live talks and performances, TEDxKingstonUponThames – entirely not-for-profit and run by volunteers – strives to bring the community together and spark meaningful discussions. After a sell-out success for the inaugural event in November 2016 at Kingston University, they are expanding on a grand scale to become one of the largest TEDx events in London. Nicholas Rogers, chairman of TEDxKingstonUponThames, said, ‘The local community is at the heart of our events and we’ve been touched by the hugely positive response to our efforts. We’re a group of volunteers who do this because we love TED and we could not succeed without the support of local people.’

Councillor’s Update

NE OF THE REASONS I LOVE BEING a Councillor is the sheer diversity of opportunities open to me. I thought I would share three of them with you. I am delighted to be on the board of our spacious and high achieving new primary school on Twickenham Green. It’s well worth a visit! I am sure you will be as amazed as I was by its sheer size and modernity. It’s being run by an enthusiastic and youthful staff under Head Teacher John Smith. As a former teacher I appreciate the staff’s professionalism and emphasis on the welfare of the individual child. Every child really matters here. John Smith told us that in consultation with local families the staff have carefully crafted their values and ethos. Families at Twickenham Primary Academy are assured that the school is reinforcing the principles and beliefs that are important to them. Those values are Leading through innovation; Pursuing excellence; Growing by Learning and Global Citizenship. Why not visit the school and see for yourself? Being a new school they currently have places in Reception and Years One and Two. Simply telephone the school’s office assistant Mr Charles Smith on 020 3019 6196 or email office@

Finally I am a trustee on the Citizens Advice Bureau. They were my nominated charity when I was Mayor and I am proud to say that the Borough raised £30,000 for them. Citizens Advice Richmond (as it is known) is an independent local charity providing information and advice to anyone who lives, works or studies in Richmond Borough. Their service is free, confidential and impartial. They empower people to resolve their problems and change their lives for the better. The nearest office to us is in Regal House next to Twickenham Station. They offer advice by email via their website during office hours; and on line advice at any time at As always if you have a problem do get in touch with either me, Cllr Clare Head on 07734958988 or Cllr David Marlow on 020 8943 5178 or Cllr David Porter I hope you have a wonderfully Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I am also a trustee on the newly formed RIchmond Brass Band run by a dynamic young couple Vicki and Paul van Uden. If you attended the Remembrance Service in Radnor Gardens on 12/11/17 Vickie played the Last Post brilliantly and the Band were pitch perfect. I go to Band practice every Sunday afternoon at the Mall School and it is just fantastic! I am hoping that they will practise in Radnor Gardens on summer Sundays at 3pm near the Bath House. They certainly lift the spirits. 18 | TW MAG – December 2017
