From the Desk of the President & CEO Were a month into the new office location and it is going great! I can’t thank the companies that assisted us in the move, enough. Achieve Services, Cummings, Keegan and Co., Larson Records Management, Ryder Vehicle Sales, Team Logic IT, TDS Metrocom, are just some of the companies that made the move nice and easy. The new office has been a little different in that our numbers of visitors per day has increased dramatically. Just yesterday four prospects and 3 members stopped in during the day to learn more about the services and products the Chamber and Tim Roche it’s members have. Chamber staff is always excited to talk about the members, so it has been a real joy! BOARD OF DIRECTORS During the month of May the Chamber Board of Directors also had their annual “Board Retreat”. It is always nice to take the time to step back and ask yourself “What are we missing?”, or in the case of the Board, “How can we provide even more value to the members?” I was amazed at the level of great ideas that came out of just one day. Just another reminder about the overall strength of volunteer organizations. The Executive Committee will take all the ideas from the day and begin to work with the Board in planning and implementing various new processes and goals throughout the year. Did you Know? The Board of Directors is well represented across many levels. Every city that we focus our efforts on is represented by a Board member. Companies ranging from 1 to over 100 employees are represented by a Board member. 12 different industries are represented by the Board members. Over half of the 15 Board of Directors are the owner or the decision make for their company. VALUE ADDED ENHANCEMENTS DURING LAST YEAR City Business Councils - Allowing us to maximize our efforts of being a regional Chamber of Commerce, while being able to focus on specific cities. Business Advocacy Legislative Breakfast with the Chamber May 4, 2010 Featured Speaker: MetCouncil Sarna’s Classic Grill, Columbia Heights

“Experience teaches you to recognize a mistake, before you make it again.” Unknown Those engaged in business understand that mistakes are part of the growth and education process. We’ve all been to that school and we will be there again. Although one can’t necessarily avoid making the occasional error or misjudgment, one can take steps to avoid making the same mistake a second time. As it’s not unusual for the repeat of a mistake to be more expensive than the original, the question becomes; how do you avoid that second time? In 1927, Harry Warner, one half of the famous Warner Brother Studios, chose to stay with silent picture technology by asking “Who wants to hear actors talk?” It wasn’t long before Harry reviewed that decision with his brother Jack. Needless to say, talking movies advanced and when the opportunity came to move into color technology, Warner Brothers did not repeat its mistake. In 1962, Dick Rowe, CEO of Decca Records, rejected signing “The Beatles” to a long term record contract. “We don’t like their sound and guitar music is on the way out.” Instead, he signed another group called “The Tremeloes.” Remember them? It wasn’t long before he was reviewing his decision with a trusted friend in the record industry. He learned, and went on to sign another new group called “The Rolling Stones.” We all know the rest. In each instance, an error was recognized and a correction made, but only after an objective review by someone detached from the original decision. Where can one find these people? If you accept the premise that Business is about relationships, then the answer is found in networking. For many, Chamber events are about obtaining information, or meeting someone to whom you can sell your product or service. I would encourage you to use these meetings for more. Build relationships, and most will turn into friendships. And within these friendships you will find the trusted advice which will help you in the world of choices and risks we call business. An excellent way to test this theory can be found within our Legislative Breakfasts. Each month our members are presented with the opportunity to obtain information, build such relationships and engage in networking, which together comprise the oxygen necessary for any business plan. In 1943, Tom Watson, founder of IBM, was content making typewriters. “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers” he said after rejecting that emerging technology. Someone obviously changed his mind. And that someone was simply a friend.
