From the Desk of the President & CEO “Every man owes a part of his time and money to the business or industry in which he is engaged. No man has a moral right to withhold his support from an organization that is striving to improve conditions within his sphere.” – Theodore Roosevelt

Business Spotlight! Mark Gonzales, Chamber Member and founder and Owner of Markfelixdesigns, has been in the construction business for over 20 years. For those of you that are in construction or are just a weekend warrior, you’re probably familiar with a Caulk tube and its uses, and its inability to work in tight places with caulk lodging and hardening in the tip. After five years of research, development, and testing he came up with a solution, THE Slip-on FLEXIBLE Caulk EXTENDER, or FCE attachment for short. The FCE attachment addresses 2 issues of inabilities for your current CAULK gun, to reach tight places and getting full use of the caulk tube without waste. It works by easily slipping on to your existing Caulk tube, creating a strong seal, which gives you the much needed FLEXIBILITY to get the job done in any situation. Mark is working with local business owners to display and sell his product. With such companies as Apple and 3M starting during a recession, the Chamber wishes Markfelixdesigns the best of luck in this new endeavor!

Business Advocacy There is the story of the famous physicists, Albert Einstein. In the late 1940’s, he was traveling by train across New England to one of his frequent seminars when the conductor approached and asked to see his ticket. Einstein quickly began searching his coat pockets, then the pockets of his suit. After a few awkward moments, and knowing his reputation for being absent minded, the conductor said “It’s OK Professor. I know who you are. I don’t need to see your ticket.” The conductor then continued to make his way to the other passengers. After a few minutes, the conductor again passed Einstein and noticed him thumbing though his briefcase, mumbling the words “ticket, ticket.” The conductor tried again to reassure the scientist, “it’s OK Professor. I told you, I know who you are and I don’t need to see your ticket.” Sounding frustrated Einstein quickly replied, “I also know who I am, but I need my ticket to know where I’m going.” For many in business, today’s economy may seem like that train. And, it would be nice if we had a ticket to tell us where it’s going. Although we understand no one has such a ticket, we can get a sense of where or economy is headed by attending the monthly series of Legislative Breakfasts brought to you by your Chamber. The most recent is an excellent example. Knowing how politics plays a large role in our economy, your Chamber invited Jim Ramstad, former Congressman from our 3rd District; Skip Humphrey, former Attorney General for our State and Rod Grams, our former U.S. Senator to attend. Together, they presented an insightful critique on how government used to work, and how it should work again if we are to find solutions to our present political and economic problems. Mutual respect and cooperation between our two political parties was the agreed upon key to resolving issues. This, they agreed, would require compromise. Perhaps John Steele Gordon said the same thing when he wrote that, “Politics usually requires a choice between imperfect means, to achieve a desired end.” However, the late Will Rogers probably summed up our current political state when he said, that politics is the art of saying “nice doggy,” while looking for a rock. Well, we in business know you can’t through stones and get much done. This is why interaction with our elected leadership is so important. Mark the next Breakfast on your calendar. Maybe we can help find the ticket. Mike Simpson Premier Commercial Properties For the Public Affairs Committee
