powerade previewS Purdue at Indiana

This One’s For You, Coach

It’s the 110th meeting for the coveted Old Oaken Bucket. The Boilermakers have dominated the series (68-35-6), especially under Coach Joe Tiller, who has won nine of 10 against his instate rival by an average score of 38-15. IU, in fact, hasn’t beaten Purdue in Bloomington since 1993. However, the Hoosiers are on a mission for Coach Terry Hoeppner, who passed away before the season started. In a game in which emotion often provides the difference between victory and defeat, the Hoosiers will give their all to win one for the Hoeppner.

Prediction: Indiana 27-24 Master Insight “Indiana is much-improved, and as long as IU plays sound football, they stand an excellent chance of winning. That’s easier said than done, though, because Purdue is very balanced offensively.” – Bill Mallory

As a matter of... FACT

Hoeppner’s motto for this year was to “Play 13,” meaning the goal was to earn a bowl game. Though already bowleligible, the Hoosiers are also motivated by the fact last year’s Purdue victory eliminated IU from bowl contention.

OPINION

Indiana may be the best feel-good story of the 2007 season. The Hoosiers could have tanked it with grief, but they rallied and should be invited to play in their first bowl since 1993. Good stuff!

OU Is Really, Really Good

So how good is Oklahoma, really? Does anyone know? You? How about you there? The Sooners are the one team that doesn’t seem to get a lot of love despite being in the thick of the national title race. Here’s what we can tell you: Red-shirt freshman quarterback Sam Bradford is solid, and leads an offense that has had 59 plays of 20 yards or more, and has four players with rushes of 41 yards or more. And the Sooner defense ranks in the top 10 nationally in almost every category. Yep, this is a good team.

Prediction: Oklahoma 38-21 Master Insight “Texas Tech can score on anybody and its defense has been much better this year. However, Oklahoma should still win based on its superior talent. But an upset wouldn’t surprise me the slightest.” – Gene Stallings

As a matter of... FACT

OU has played only one Division I-AA team since Bob Stoops became coach in 1999, and that was in his very first game. Nonconference opponents since then have included Notre Dame, UCLA, Alabama, Oregon, Miami (FL) and Louisville.

OPINION

Future opponents include Miami (FL), Tennessee, LSU and Florida State. Memo to Ohio State: It’s possible to put a formidable non-conference schedule together and still challenge for the national title. So drop Youngstown State! 15
