WHAT IS GOD REALLY LIKE? Spring 2011 July 3-God is Not Like Me • • •

In what ways would you say God is NOT like you? Is it supposed to be that way? Isaiah 55:8-9, 8For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Are you glad God is not like you???

God’s Schedule is Different Than Mine • Did Abraham and Sarah have different schedules than God? • How about the Israelites headed to the promised land? • What about the Old Testament prophets looking for the Messiah? Isaiah 40:28-31, 28Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. 30 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; 31 but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. • How is He different than us? (V28, 29) • What things does He promise in V31? • Why can’t God offer a drive-thru? Things to remember: • God wants what is best for us and is willing to make us wait for what He wants • God isn’t doing something to you, He’s doing something in you • From the beginning of time, God has been working overtime to draw you unto Himself • God has one goal in mind - for you to reflect the character and nature of Himself • Would you ever go into operating room and yell “HURRY UP!” to the surgeon? • I Peter 4:12-13, 12Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.

He’s always right on time • Romans 5:6, 6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. • What about for Lazarus??? • John 11:21, Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. Why does God wait sometimes??? • James 1:2-4, 2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. • But in those trials, rejoice! John 16:33, I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." God Loves Differently • When it comes to love, aren’t you glad God loves differently than we humans do? • God’s love is . . . • . . . perfect • . . . flawless • . . . never-ending • Psalm 100:5, “His love endures forever”
