Food & Domestic Services
Living in this beautiful corner of the country, ‘The Garden of England’, we are fortunate to be surrounded by fields, farms and orchards, producing the freshest local fare. With the advent of 24-hour supermarkets stocking fruit and veg from all over the world, all year round, it is easy to forget that we can eat far better and help local businesses, if we shop local. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Sam Nightingale from the Nightingale Cider Company (formerly Gibbet Oak Cider, Farm & Farm Shop) whose family owns and runs the oldest farm shop in Tenterden. The Nightingale family have been growing fruit in Kent since 1948 and have been based at Gibbet Oak Farm for the past 33 years. The farm shop grew from the humble beginnings of an honesty stall over 20 years ago and now boasts a cider and juice company as well.
Sam explains that in the Autumn of 2015, he returned to the family business to support his father and help diversify the business. The Nightingales have been producing juice since 2005, while in 2009 Sam started experimenting with making cider and perry as a hobby. 30
Fast-forward to 2013 and the first cider and perry was on sale in the well-stocked farm shop. Today there are now 11 different cider, perry and juice products selling to pubs, cafés, trade and consumers across Kent. “Cider production alone is now at 45,000 litres per year - a tripling in production on the previous vintage and the farm shop is open 7 days a week, so we are pretty busy.” Sam Nightingale Sam also has plans to build on their little known delivery service and the brand new website has a retail page, meaning the Tenterden grown juices and ciders can be purchased online from later this month. As we chat during the busiest harvest the farm has seen in several years, Sam excitedly talks about the latest project of re-branding, “With the businesses having grown up under different names, over the last 70 years, we felt that it was time to unite them under the family name” Sam explains, ‘Nightingale Cider Company and Nightingale Farm Shop’, we look forward to welcoming customers new and old to see our new look!” Find Nightingale Farm Shop on the B2080 Appledore Road, Tenterden.
