Welcome Hi everyone welcome to the May edition. The Spring/Summer season is off to a good start where community events are concerned, we’ve had so many it was difficult to fit them all in. Unfortunately there were one or two that were so close to the start of the month they happened before the magazine could be delivered, they should have been submitted for the April Edition, but all was not lost, in the hope that many of you are keeping an eye on the Events page of our website, we published these early events there, along with any that missed the print deadline. The magazine is delivered from the first Monday of each month and deliveries take a full week to complete, Bank Holidays get in the way too, so do plan your event promotions carefully. The next deadline will be for both Jun and July entries, which brings me to my next subject. For the first time in 13 years of running this magazine I am taking a summer break – whoopee! Winter breaks are great, I love skiing, but I am so looking forward to some summer sun! The downside is that I had to reach a particular age for it to be important enough (in my mind that is!). I have a BIG birthday coming up this summer and as a result my husband is taking me away from it all for a while. I’m a small business and don’t have a big team behind me to carry on the work, so in order to make this possible the next edition will cover a two month period. This means that I need your July events, as well as June, now! The deadline is Wednesday 16th May, and as I mentioned earlier, any events that miss the deadline will be published on our Events page at www.thevillagedirectory.co.uk. Please send your entries to events@ thevillagedirectory.co.uk. Thank you and until next time, have a great month.

The Garden

Striking Sunflowers by Pippa Greenwood

They’re bold, they’re brash, they’re larger than life and they’re gorgeous! Yes, sunflowers are one of the most stunning and impressive flowers you could have in your garden – and one of the easiest to grow too. If you get your skates on you can sow them this month and achieve a fantastic flowery display in just a few months’ time. So which ones should you choose and how do you go about getting the best crop of flowers? There are some fantastically fast-growing and potentially very tall varieties such as ‘Russian Giant’ and ‘Titan’. The latter is exceptionally tall, reaching a potential height of up to 360cm or 12ft and having heads of anything up to 60cm (2ft) in diameter! If space is limited, or you simply prefer you flowers lower to the ground, there are some delightful miniature or dwarf varieties available. The F1 variety ‘Little Dorrit’ grows to about 60cm (2ft) and has rich yellow flowers with very

4

dark centres, and looks great as a border edging. Another favourite is ‘Little Leo’ at just 45cm (18in), which makes lots of impact with golden yellow heads on multi-branching stems. Forget the idea that sunflowers are yellow and ring the changes – nowadays there are many other colours readily available. One of the richest shades I know is ‘Black Magic’, which has maroon flowers and is multibranching, reaching a height of about 180cm (6ft). Grow yourself a few for cutting too, and you’ll have a vase or more full of flowers that would cost a fortune in the shops. Many varieties are suitable, including the orangey-brown ‘Velvet Queen’, ‘Black Velvet’ and the bi-coloured ‘Magic Roundabout’ (great for those who suffer from hay fever as this variety is pollen-free). If you want some in containers, that is also possible: ‘Pacino Colada’ is a compact variety growing to just 40cm (16in) and

has 10cm (4in) wide goldenyellow flowers, making a wonderful plant for a colourful container on a sunny patio, sheltered balcony or in the flower beds. I’ve still got a fascination with tall sunflowers, and I’ve never met a child who doesn’t enjoy a sunflower competition. The really sturdy and tall varieties like ‘Russian Giant’ and ‘Giant Single’ are perfect for smaller gardeners, and as they reach heights of about 180cm (6ft) will soon dwarf them! Sunflowers make a cheap and cheerful addition to a garden boundary, adding splashes of colour to even the most dreary fence line or helping to mask the ugly appearance of a garage or decrepit garden shed. They’re a lot faster growing than Leylandii but these colourful beauties won’t get out of hand. The seeds of sunflowers can be sown right now – in fact you should get a good crop of blooms if you sow them anytime between March and

The Garden

May, depending on the weather and where you live. You can sow them straight into the soil or into pots of compost. I like to use RootTrainers as these encourage really well-developed and deep roots to develop, and make it easy to plant out the sunflowers with minimum root disturbance; see www.pippagreenwood. com/products/grow-great-crops for more information. As their name suggests, sunflowers love, indeed need, plenty of sunshine to thrive and put on their best possible show of blooms. The great thing is that although many are pretty tall, each plant does not actually take up much space at ground level. Slugs and snails love sunflowers and can literally eat them to the ground, especially if the weather is damp. I always grow sunflowers in small individual pots and then plant them out when they’re a few inches tall. It may sound like I’m pampering them, but it means they’re bigger and tougher and better able to resist attack. As an added precaution, put a ring of slug-deterring material around the base of each one – crushed shells, crushed eggshells, coco-shell or pine needles for instance.

The Importance of Bird Proofing Solar Panels We are always looking for new ways to improve our services to our customers, that’s why we’d like to introduce our new service, Bird Deterrent solutions for Solar Panels. Solar Panels are a big investment and are a fantastic way to cut your electricity bills, and even generate income by selling electricity back to the grid. However, it does come with a common problem, birds, and pigeons in particular nesting underneath the panels, bringing debris, mites and noise, as well as leaving their droppings on the panel surfaces. This can cause unnecessary and costly damage to wiring, panel surfaces and components, not to mention the affect on efficiency of the solar panels and energy wastage in the process. If bird droppings cover 50% of one solar cell, it can result in a 50% dropping of energy conversion, and so on. That’s the bad stuff, now for the good news...! The system we use is virtually invisible from the ground, it can be installed without drilling or screwing, preventing any damage to the solar panels. It can be secured with clips that won’t scratch and can be easily removed for servicing.

by Bensko Pest Control Services We will remove any nesting materials or debris from underneath the panels and as part of the service we will ensure that the gutters are cleaned if required. Most importantly it will NOT invalidate your solar panel warranty. We provide a 100% guarantee that our system works, in fact we are so confident that we provide a 10-year guarantee. So please call Bruce or Emma at Bensko on 07857 344770 for a free, no obligation quote. We look forward to hearing from you.

The Home

Home & Interiors Make The Most Of A Small Bathroom feel light and airy. Add texture to avoid an overly clinical feel – think timber shelving, wicker baskets, waffle towels and linen blinds, for example.

Even a tiny bathroom can function brilliantly and look gorgeous. Our top ten tricks of the trade will help you make the most of your space. After all, size isn’t everything. The perfect bathroom – whether it’s a shared family affair or an en suite shower and WC – is a great blend of comfort, good looks and functional efficiency. The good news is that all these can be achieved even in a small space and, with some clever thinking, it is even possible to trick the eye into thinking that the room is actually larger than it really is. 1 Choose subtle colours Maintaining a pale, neutral colour palette will automatically open up a small bathroom, giving it a clean, sophisticated, contemporary feel. If you can’t live without colour, watery blues and greens have a cool, clear quality that help the room

14

2 Fit excellent storage Nothing makes a room feel small as much as too much clutter. The simple answer is to minimise what you keep in your bathroom and then find clever spaces to store it. Cupboards do take up valuable floor space but, because cleaning products and toiletries are pretty small, slimline storage will suffice. If renovating, you can build false walls to conceal pipework and set cupboards or niches within them; otherwise, look for anywhere that storage could be added, from above the door to below the basin, even behind the bath panel or a rack inside the shower. 3 Make the most of natural light Enhance the space by getting the most light possible through the windows – make sure nothing on the sills is blocking it, and that window treatments do not cover any part of the glass. Then bounce the light around the room by using mirrors and glossy tiles.

By Katherine Sorrell

4 Select fittings wisely There are plenty of bathroom fittings on the market designed for small bathrooms that don’t compromise on looks or function, including shortprojection WCs, shower-baths, thin-but-tall towel rails and ultra-slim basins. For awkward spaces, look for corner showers, basins and even WCs. Wall or mixer taps create room on a small basin, and check that it has space for soap – you might need to add a wall-mounted dispenser. 5 Raise it off the floor Even without using smallerthan-average or ingeniously shaped fittings, it is possible to make a bathroom appear more spacious than it really is by installing wall-mounted pieces. Not only do they look modern and sophisticated, but they also show off the floor space beneath, and the more floor you can see, the bigger the room appears. 6 Lighting is vital Try to create a suitably bright and breezy bathroom lighting scheme that meets all your requirements, from putting on make-up to reading in the bath. Avoid lights that dangle or protrude too much, as they will interrupt the impression of smooth-flowing space; instead, choose recessed spotlights, or neat directional lights mounted on a slender track. As a hidden light source you could fit LED

The Home

strips beneath wall units, with a baffle board in front to avoid glare, and don’t forget an illuminated mirror. Bear in mind that fittings will need to be IP-rated for safety (ask advice from your electrician). 7 Two-in-one is best Never have two pieces of furniture when you can have just one – multifunction is the way to go. Choose towel radiators, storage seats, mirrored cabinets and basins with cupboards beneath, for example. 8 Consider underfloor heating Getting rid of your radiator can potentially free up a valuable amount of floor space and, if you are renovating your bathroom, installing underfloor heating is relatively easy and inexpensive, using either loose wiring or mats. 9 Employ visual tricks It may seem counter-intuitive, but large-format tiles (wall or floor) can work better in compact bathrooms than smaller tiles, which may appear fussy. With fewer grout lines, large tiles look sleek and are also easier to maintain. 10 Assess your window options Curtains in a bathroom make a pleasant change to the hard surfaces elsewhere, but in a small room it is best to avoid anything too flouncy. Floaty sheers in simple gathers are better than dark, heavy fabrics – a flat panel of muslin threaded onto a pole or wire across the bottom half of the window could work well. Alternatively, try a neat Roman or roller blind, waterproof louvre shutters or simple frosted glass.

Sweet Recipe Chocolate Fondant Puddings Don’t overcook these divine chocolate puds or the centres will set and you’ll lose the gooey molten middle. You can prepare them a couple of hours in advance and bake them just before serving.

Ingredients: • 175g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing • 175g caster sugar • 175g good quality plain chocolate, broken into pieces • 3 large eggs • 50g plain flour • Cocoa powder and icing sugar, to dust • Whipped cream and strawberries, to serve

Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes

TIP If you don’t have ovenproof ramekin dishes, you can use small metal pudding basins or ovenproof teacups. 24

1. Preheat the oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas mark 5. Lightly butter four 300ml capacity ramekin dishes (see Tip) and sprinkle with a little of the caster sugar.

2. Place the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Cool for 5 minutes.

3. In a large bowl whisk the eggs and remaining caster sugar together for 5 minutes until very thick, pale and creamy, then whisk in the chocolate mixture. Sift over the flour and gently fold in using a metal spoon.

4. Divide the mixture between the four dishes. Place on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until the puddings have risen and are just set on the outside – the tops should still wobble when pressed lightly. Run a knife around the edge of the puddings and turn out onto plates. Dust with cocoa powder and icing sugar and serve immediately with whipped cream and strawberries.

Ricotta Stuffed Pork Serves 4

Ready in 1 hour

This is a great way to jazz up pork steaks for a midweek meal. Serve with brown rice or creamy mashed potatoes on the side, if liked.

Place the pork steaks between two sheets of cling film or greaseproof paper and bash with a rolling pin until very thin.

• 4 thin-cut pork loin steaks • 175g ricotta cheese

In a small bowl, mix the ricotta cheese with the chopped basil and lemon zest and season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

• 2 tbsp fresh chopped basil • 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest

Place a spoonful of the cheese mixture at the base of each piece of pork then carefully roll up to enclose the stuffing and secure each with a wooden cocktail stick.

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Heat the oil and butter in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the pork rolls for 4-5 minutes, turning once until browned all over. Pour in the stock and sherry or apple juice and simmer for 20-25 minutes until cooked through. Remove the pork rolls and keep warm. Add the green beans to the frying pan and cook for 5-6 minutes until just tender.

• 1 tbsp olive oil • 15g butter • 450ml meat or vegetable stock • 4 tbsp dry sherry or apple juice • 175g green beans, trimmed • 2 tbsp pine nuts, toasted

26

5

Slice each pork roll and serve on the green beans with the pan juices and toasted pine nuts.

If you don’t have fresh basil use 1 tsp dried mixed herbs and for extra flavour add a crushed TIP garlic clove.

The Ashford South Kumon Study Centre has moved to the Singleton Environment Centre Your local Ashford South Kumon Study Centre has moved ! It offers the unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes to local children of all ages and abilities. With almost 60 years of experience, the Kumon Method of Learning pursues the potential of each individual child by developing confident, independent learners. Through studying the Kumon Maths and English Programmes, children are able to reach an advanced level of study, often far beyond their school curriculum. Rather than being taught in the conventional sense, students work out how to complete new work they face by themselves. They develop the ability to learn for themselves so they do not have to rely on the knowledge of others. Liz Spencer, the Instructor at the Kumon Ashford South Study Centre, is delighted to have the opportunity to share the Kumon Method of Learning with her local community, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience with her. Liz says: “I am delighted to now have a permanent space here for our Kumon Centre. This means that I can be open for longer and hold meetings and events to support local students and families” Kumon believes that learning is always for the long run. If you want your child to be best prepared to succeed both at school and beyond, daily Kumon study can make all the difference. Every child is different, and so their programme of study should be too. Kumon’s individualised programmes enable students to progress at their own pace, so they are best able to realise their full potential and achieve success. 30

Kumon is an independent s t u d y programme, but students are never alone. Liz and her team of trained staff support students when needed and gradually encourage them to take their learning into their own hands, increasing their motivation to succeed and achieve. More than half of the students at the Ashford South Study Centre are working beyond school level and will be receiving medals for their achievements from the Mayor of Ashford in a few weeks. The Ashford South Kumon Centre is Ofsted registered, so that parents may take advantage of childcare vouchers or tax free childcare if they are eligible.

The New Location is: Singleton Environment Centre, Wesley School Road, Ashford, TN23 5LW with classes running Tuesday-Thursday from 3-6pm, and Saturday mornings from 9:30-12:30. A Yoga Spring Clean

We have emerged from this dark and particularly cold winter, and glimmers of sunshine are starting to break through the clouds. Winter is a time often associated with over indulgence and inactivity, which can lead to a sluggish start to Spring. But never fear, it’s never too late for a Spring clean! As we approach the middle of Spring the days are getting ever longer and sunshine helps to boost energy levels and encourage a reconnection with nature. Through yoga practice we can cleanse the body and mind, through amongst other things, physical postures known as asana, breathing techniques and pranayama, meditation and cleansing techniques, known as the shatkarmas.

Move Twisting asana stimulate circulation and have a cleansing effect on the organs and associated glands. By “wringing-out” the internal organs, we can cleanse them of metabolic by-products and toxins and renew them with fresh, oxygenated blood as we untwist. This can aid digestion and cleanse the cells as well as keep the spinal muscles supple, reduce back pain and open the chest and shoulders to reduce

stress. (If you have any kind of spinal ailment or issues with blood pressure you must consult your GP before undertaking a yoga practice).

Breathe The breath is such a powerful tool and can bring about great transformation! And I speak from experience - after taking antidepressants for almost a decade it was my daily practice of pranayama that had the most effect and I am now able to use my yoga practice as my medication (I should note you should always get advice and guidance from your GP before deciding to come off any medication). Any strong pranayama should be practiced under the guidance of a reputable yoga teacher but if you would like to try a basic breathing practice at home try simple ratio breathing. For an energising practice, inhale for a count of six, exhale for a count of four. To stimulate your relaxation response inhale for a count of four and exhale for a count of six. Practicing as little as 5 minutes a day can have a real affect!

One of the six shatkarma’s is known as trataka, or yogic gazing. The practice of fixing the gaze on an object, traditionally a candle flame, without blinking until the eyes start watering. The eyes are therefore cleansed of impurities through the tears. Trataka is also thought to improve concentration, mental “The seeds of today become the flowers of health and induce relaxation. Beauty Imagine the results of a lower facelift without surgery

STRAWBERRY LIFT by Laser Lipo Ltd

The worlds first laser for double chins with instant, painless results! How Does The Strawberry Lift Reduce Double Chins? A non-invasive laser penetrates the skin targeting the fat cells while leaving blood vessels, nerves and other tissue undisturbed. As the fat cells absorb the energy from the lasers they release their contents of water, glycerol and free fatty acids which causes them to instantly reduce in size. This harmless content exits the body through the liver, kidneys and lymphatic drainage. Silent Ultrasound is then used to gently tone the neck, jawline and jowls. The Silent Ultrasound causes the tissue protein to coagulate and produce new collagen. You may notice an initial lift immediately after the Silent Ultrasound but results will continue to improve over the following three months. What Is The Aftercare? Following your treatment if you perform just 20 minutes of cardio vascular exercise you can potentially double your results! We will explain fully at your initial consultation.

General Corporate Advice

The Power of Positive Thinking Yvonne Fernando, NLP Master Practitioner & Life Coach lets us know... Positive Thinking can often be used as a ‘cure all’ for someone who is feeling down. And rightly so, because this powerful state of mind can really make the difference to the way you feel and the results you get. Positive thoughts can manifest in lots of ways, from the language you use, the beliefs you hold, your body language and posture, your internal dialogue and the way you express yourself. The power of this positivity can affect all areas of your life and wellbeing as you re-wire the way you think, move and communicate. Not only can it impact the actions you take and the results you get, but it can also influence others. The role of the mind and emotions in your state of health is a vital one and an essential component to the healing process. Your thoughts determine your feelings, your

feelings determine your actions and your actions determine the results you get. By understanding this relationship, you can claim a greater role in your own wellbeing. However, at the thought level you can have positive and negative thoughts as well as conscious and unconscious ones. And much of what you learn can be unconscious. NLP allows you to explore your thoughts, mindset and feelings and how they all interact. This promotes positive change and often, when a specific problem is addressed, other seemingly un-connected things may also improve or disappear completely too. Yvonne works with adults and children to make positive life changes. T : 01233 878474 M: 07968 785714 E : yvonne@yvonnefernandonlp.co.uk www.yvonnefernandonlp.co.uk
