Functional Design Specification The initial stage of any machinery safety engineering project is to complete an engineering design process. In order to establish and agree the project requirements and boundaries in detail, a Function Design Specification (FDS) will be generated. A number of site surveys may be carried out as part of this design process. On acceptance of the FDS, TÜV SÜD Product Service will begin the overall design process in accordance with appropriate EN standards such as: Physical guarding designed and built to EN 953 and EN ISO 13857 Safety control systems designed to EN ISO 13849 or EN 62061 Electrical design to EN60204 Selection of the most suitable safety products including interlocks, and light curtains where appropriate
Electrical Engineering Services The increased use of technology in machinery safety means that compliance engineering projects are often more electrically biased than mechanical. Our electrical engineering services include: Design, manufacture and installation of safety control systems, including electrical control panels Installation and testing of Electro-Sensitive Protective Equipment (ESPE), including light curtains, laser scanners, pressure mats and safety edges.
Safety Control Systems TÜV SÜD Product Service employs a range of techniques to reduce the level of risk, many of which will not involve the use of safety-related control systems. The more critical the role played by the safety-related part of the control system, the more reliable and resistant to faults it must be. Safety-related control systems are designed and configured to be reliable enough to perform the necessary functions to achieve or maintain a safe state or mitigate the consequences of a hazard. Once the appropriate standard has been chosen, an initial assessment will be carried out to ascertain the correct Category/ Performance Level/ SIL Level for the control system. This level or category is the basis for how the safety control system will be designed, whether or not it needs to include dual channel and redundancy. Where appropriate, the design will need to be validated before the safety control system is produced.
ESPE As technology has moved on, the use of ElectroSensitive Protective Equipment (ESPE) has significantly increased. Items such as light guards and laser scanners are more prevalent in use than ever before and whilst they may have benefits in terms of output and production over more traditional types of guarding, their role within the safety related parts of the control system (SRP/CS) cannot be underestimated. TÜV SÜD Product Service offers a stand-alone ESPE periodic inspection and test service, which includes: Inspecting the position to ensure the correct distance from the danger zone Ensuring additional safeguards are provided to prevent access to the danger zone from directions not covered by the ESPE Testing the overall response time Testing the detection capability Inspecting the stopping performance monitor (if fitted) Inspecting and testing primary machine control elements to ensure correct functionality
