BRC Scheme – One Audit, One Certificate, Many Customers! About the BRC Scheme The BRC scheme is based on a series of Global standards which aim to ensure that retailers can meet their legal requirements and protect the value of their brands, whilst keeping consumers safe. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) was asked to set up the scheme by retailers to reduce the number of supplier audits, remove the competitive element from product safety, and provide a baseline measure that would assist retailers to demonstrate “due diligence”. Evidence of Certification to the Standard forms a vital part of a retailer’s or wholesaler’s Quality Assurance system and also allows suppliers to gain entry on to the BRC Directory and market their capability to potential customers. The scheme operates under EN45011 accreditation and is composed of an audit which is assessed by a Certification Body, such as TÜV Product Service, filed with the BRC and then placed on record for reference by retailers and distributors. The new service offered by TÜV Product Service through its certification body, BABT, will require the audit of suppliers to evaluate risks and hazards relating to safety and quality.

Why Use The BRC Scheme? The scheme enables manufacturers of consumer products to receive just one audit from TÜV Product Service, which will result in a BRC certificate recognised by a number of Europe’s leading retailers. This means that you should not need to be audited again by these retailers, saving you time and money. The BRC Scheme is currently recognised by the following European retailers: • Ahold • Asda • B&Q • Booker • The Co-operative • Home Retail Group (Argos and Homebase) • John Lewis • Makro • Max Bahr Zentrale • Metro AG • Praktiker Bau- und Heimwerkermärkte AG • REWE Group • J Sainsbury plc • Tesco • Waitrose

What do the audits cover? Unlike many other certification schemes, a BRC audit focuses on risk management and covers the following areas: • Product Risk Management • Consumer Product Management Systems • Site Standards • Product and Process Control • Training and Hygiene Procedures What products are covered in the scheme? Almost all consumer products are covered by the BRC Global standard for consumer products, which was initially developed in response to European safety requirements for Consumer Goods covered by the General Product Safety Directive 2001/95/EC.
What are the benefits? There are many ways in which a BRC audit can save you time and money, and enhance the value of your business with your key retail customers.
