CASS CITY — Katie Engelhardt’s big day — both as a pitcher and as a hitter — sparked Unionville-Sebewaing Area to a Division 4 softball district title on Friday. Engelhardt was the winning pitcher in both shutout performances, and in the finals fanned nine Cardinals’ hitters over five innings, good for a 14-0 USA mercy. Leading hitters in the game for the Patriots were Maci Montgomery with three hits, three runs scored and three RBIs, Engelhardt with three hits including two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored, Lexy Neal with two hits, three runs scored and an RBI, Rylee Zimmer with two hits including a double, two runs scored and two RBIs, Lauren Adam with two hits including a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored and Brynn Polega with a double and two RBIs. In their first game on Friday, the Patriots beat Cass City 4-0. Engelhardt allowed just two hits while striking out 11 over seven innings to win the decision, and helped her own cause offensively with two hits including a homer, a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Zimmer added two hits, an RBI and a run scored and Polega contributed two hits. USA (27-7) will face Mayville at noon Saturday in a regional final in Kingston.

Mayville pitcher Lauryn Frenzel helped guide the Wildcats to their second straight district title — their third in the last four years — with a 9-5 victory over Bay City All Saints in their Division 4 final on Friday at Mayville. The Wildcats advanced to the championship following an 8-1 win over Dryden.

MAYVILLE — Lauryn Frenzel accounted for 27 combined strikeouts in lifting Mayville to a Division 4 softball district title with wins over Dryden and Bay City All Saints in the semifinals and finals, respectively. The 8-1 win over Dryden and the 9-5 win over All Saints gave the Wildcats their second straight district title, and their third in the last four years. In the finals, Frenzel allowed five hits and fanned 16 hitters to earn the win. Rachel Cummings had two hits, an RBI and scored a run in the winning effort, Alexis Rutter had three hits, two runs scored and an RBI, Frenzel had two hits and scored a run, Harmony Cypher had a hit, an RBI and scored twice and Tasha Haddrill finished with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. In the win over Dryden, Frenzel allowed just one earned run on two hits while striking out 11. Madison Franzel had two hits, an RBI and scored a run for Mayville, Frenzel had a hit, two RBIs and two runs scored and Cummings had a hit and scored twice. The Wildcats (22-10) advance to meet Unionville-Sebewaing Area in a regional semifinal set for noon Saturday in Kingston.

USA rallies to reach finals, beats North Huron for district title PIGEON — After coming back late to knock off Laker High 7-2 in Saturday’s Division 4 baseball district semifinals at Laker High, Unionville-Sebewaing Area rode the momentum to a 10-0, five-inning mercy over North Huron in the finals. Devin Riskey started and got the win over North Huron in the finals, allowing five hits with a walk and four strikeouts over three innings. Cooper Kauffold highlighted the Patriots’ offensive effort with three hits including two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI, Myles Geiger had two hits, a run scored and an RBI, Nic Lutz had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs and Hunter Bohn contributed a hit, two RBIs and scored once. USA advanced to the finals with a sixrun bottom of the sixth inning to erase what was a 2-1 deficit in the semis against Laker High. Riskey went three innings in relief of Brendan Prime to get the pitching win, allowing no runs on three hits with three strikeouts. FRANKENMUTH — Swan Valley got a two-out hit to drive home the game’s only run in the bottom of the sixth inning for what ended as a Vikings’ 1-0 Division 2 softball district semifinal win over Frankenmuth on Saturday. It was all the offense winning pitcher Callie Burgess needed, as she racked up 15 strikeouts in the game and allowed just four base runners total — two on walks and two on errors. Pitcher Emily Coulter took the loss for the Eagles (25-13), allowing an unearned run on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts in six innings. Softball Division 3 At Saginaw Valley Lutheran: Vassar was eliminated from the state tournament on Saturday, losing to host Saginaw Valley Lutheran 15-8 in a district semifinal. The Vulcans scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but wouldn’t lead again as Valley Lutheran answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the first. The Chargers advanced to the district finals, where they lost to No. 1 Millington, 17-2. The Cardinals defeated Reese 6-0 in Saturday’s first semifinal. Sarah Colosky took the loss in the pitcher’s circle for the Vulcans and led the team offensively with three hits. Madison Hornung blasted a home run and Emilee Whitney drove in three runs for Vassar. Baseball Division 2 At Frankenmuth: Frankenmuth dropped its district semifinal with Swan Valley 4-0 in a game where the Eagles were limited to just two hits: singles by Derek Humpert and Joby Ostrofsky.

Zach Freier was charged with the loss in 5 1/3 innings that yielded four earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Division 4 At Dryden: Mayville survived its Saturday opener, beating Morris-Beecher 17-1, but saw its season end with a 10-0 loss to Dryden in the district finals. Carter Harmon was the winning pitcher in the opener with seven strikeouts in five innings while Lucas Bruman was 4-for-4 and Billy Petitt, Jackson Schenk, Ashtin Steele and Nick Phillips each went 2-for-3. Schenk was tagged with the loss in the championship, which saw the Wildcats (12-15-1) limited to just three singles: one for Petitt, Schenk and Logan LaBean.
