Ladies at the Presbyterian Apartments enjoyed their new rockers outside this week in the beautiful spring weather.
By Mike Woodard firstname.lastname@example.org Tuscaloosa Sherriff Ted Sexton took a position in the Bush administration with the department of Homeland Security to be the Assistant Secretary. Sexton spoke in Tuscaloosa this week about the challenges the Department of Homeland Security is facing, including border security, swine flu and others. And, on a personal note, spoke about the difference in living in Washington and Tuscaloosa. I asked Ted if there was a difference in working with the Bush administration, which hired him, and the Obama administration he is continuing to work with. “The primary focus during my time with the Bush administration was organizing the department. The Obama administration is focused more on implementing new initiatives for the department.” Ted said. Ted said the department is six years old and sometimes acts like one. A current challenge for Sexton is the swine flu situation. “As pertains to it coming up from Mexico, the horse is out of the barn. We have to look at many situations you might not think of. For instance, the population of inmates in jail.” Sexton noted that there are concerns about factory workers, church congregations, and students in school

when facing the potential of a pandemic. The department of Homeland security apprehended 723,000 illegal immigrants and searched 70,450 trucks and rail cars per day in 2008. “There is a lot of rhetoric in the media about the drug wars in Mexico, and there were 6,000 drug related murders south of the border, but on our side of the border violent Tuscaloosa Sheriff Ted crimes were down in 2008.” Sexton Sexton said that increases in the speed of security clearances were helping the department function better. The department was criticized for reporting the most likely terrorist threats to come from within our country, but Sexton said this was a description of people like McVey, the “Unibomber”, and Eric Rudolph. Sexton said he was ready to come back home to Tuscaloosa as soon as possible.
By Lauren Heartsill Downtown Northport offers something for the young, old and history buff alike. For an adventure the kids will enjoy, visit the Northport Train Depot on 25th Ave. The museum has miniature towns, which have trees, houses and stores that fill the depot. The train depot is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Over a dozen people gather, and most are parents who brought their children to see the
trains. Jane Miles smiled while she pointed out the different trains. “We come every Saturday,” Miles said while holding her grandchild up to see the trains. “It’s our favorite thing to do.” A life-size train car sits outside the depot for visitors to walk through and enjoy. After you make the kids, or the kid inside of you, happy, go satisfy your sweet tooth at Mary’s Cakes & Pastries. Mary’s offers muffins, cookies, pastries, coffee drinks, pecan rolls and other goodies. Mary’s owner, Mary Cesar said if the snacks inspire you, the bakery offers workshops that teach the artistic side of the pastry craft. Cesar said downtown Northport was a great place for people to come and enjoy. “There are not many places in Alabama that have a collection of independently owned stores where you can park and walk around,” Cesar said.
“There are many shops and galleries here.” Alice McGuffey, owner of the Antique Store, said “The quaint shops are better than bigger stores,” McGuffey said. “Downtown has more ‘mom and pop’ stores.” Northport’s Old Fashioned 5 & 10 is the definition of a “mom and pop” store. When a man came in and asked where the pocketknives and chocolate cherries were located, I knew this store has a variety of items.

I have an interesting job. Writing stories about what’s happening in our community. Selling advertisements to help people with their business. Evaluating the circumstances of the world and relaying it to people...trying to help people with my words. Growing trees and managing forests. Keeping up a mini-storage facility and rental business. Yep, I have an interesting job. And each week I try to figure out what I can say to help people with my words to understand how to move forward with their life. As the economy has gotten tougher so has my job. The trees are worth less, people struggle to pay their storage rent, advertisers work with fewer sales, and my words get tough to find. However, I am a tough man. This is life. Welcome to this time of your life. We can either lament our struggles, try to just let this time pass unnoticed, as if these are not good enough times to be alive...or we can chose to live and live large. I see this is a time for us to live. We may have to wake up and smell the coffee for how much we can earn or spend, but we must never put limits on our life. Welcome to your life. It may be tough, but it’s still worth squeezing every drop out of it. We only get one go round. Look at these days as better days because they require you to excel and pull everything you got out of yourself. That’s a blessing in disguise. Neal Sadaka once had a hit song, “I miss the hungry years”...and it expanded upon the golden times of struggle. Easy always is easy. But these are times to test men’s souls, and once tested, and we prove ourselves, then we stand taller than ever. Stand tall my friends, as tall as you can. Stand proud. For pride comes in tattered cloths and worn shoes more than in a gilded suit. Honor is standing strong in the face of adversity. Let no man take your honor or chastise you for having less in these days. We all have less these days. All who have fielded in battle can tell you..in war it is not the size of your home, back home, or the shiny car, or the power of position. In war the strong victor. This is a war of sorts. A war for family, community, and self respect. There is always honor in work. Seek it. There is work to be done, find it. And for those who are without, do not look upon yourself as alone, or the only one. Many are struggling in these times. We are more alike that different now. Only a few, mostly who took beyond their fair share, can think of themselves as doing better these days. I am glad to have work, honorable work, to do. I wish if for everyone. Sometimes the things I do are unpleasant. Every job I have ever held has included a dark unpleasant side...and every job I have ever held has include a bright uplifting side to it which warmed me. Everyones position in life is subject to change. Change is the only constant in life anyway. And you can change you life for the better in time. Do not despair of these days. They will change and you must be ready for that too. As you find your inner strength never lose humility, or compassion for your fellow man. Not all will rise, but many will try. Honor those who try as much as you do those who succeed, for none of us knows what the future holds for us, and which we will be, as long as we try. - LAWNS. It past time to plant any cool season variety of grasses. Now is the time to plant sod instead which give a head start on establishing the lawn before the hot dry days of summer. To encourage deep root strength don’t water frequently, but only when there is signs of moisture distress. Water late at night or early morning to reduce evaporation and discourages disease. Watering early morning saves 30% in water costs...a substantial amount when you consider that it takes 640 gallons to water 1,000 square feet one inch. As the temperature rises this summer increase the blade height on your mower by 1/4 and then 1/2 to reduce heat stress. Keeping your mower blade sharp releases less water than a blunt edge. If you plant sod, you must be willing to water it, especially through it’s first summer drought days. Centipede decline, or areas that don’t revive in the spring, is usually caused by high soil ph, high amounts of nitrogen, or heavy thatch buildup. Check your soils ph (call Brown about all of this), adjust the ph, fertilize properly, remove thatch, and mow properly.

Children’s Corner About Teens and Peer Pressure
Understandably, most parents will go to any lengths to make sure that their children do not get into any trouble. They have never-ending arguments with their children about what’s right and what’s wrong; what they should do and what they shouldn’t. Knowing that they cannot follow their kids everywhere and knowing about teenager’s vulnerability to unwholesome peer pressure, parent will worry about teenagers making the right choices and selecting the ‘right people’ to imitate. This article is about teenagers that succumb to what parents might see as a negative influence and some practical tips for parents to stop the teenager coming to harm. Dealing with teenagers Kids are going to be influenced by many people for many different reasons some positive and some negative. If you think your teenager is under a negative influence and you wish to get them back on track, here are a few things you can do. Teaching your teenager about skills that will help them get out of bad situations is time well spent. Role play and acting out various options available may be useful pre-teen or early teen. But I am sure you will not get a 16 year old to role play with you! Discuss with them that what they choose to do is entirely their responsibility. If they have chosen not to join in a particular activity they must never let themselves be swayed by the rest of the group. Teach them the well known saying ‘Just walk away’. An important factor about teenagers and discipline is when you have cause to berate them make sure you tell them clearly why you where upset with their behaviour and what they could try to do to improve it. Avoid personal statements such as I hate you, you look scruffy. They must know it is their behaviour you dislike not them. If they find themselves in a situation that they cannot get out of, insist that they find a way to call you so you can bail them out of a tuff tough spot. Just the thought of having a friend call a parent can cause the other person to stop right there in their tracks. Being able to tell their peers they will get grounded, loose pocket money or allowance can give your child a credible ‘out’ to excuse themselves from something they know you would not approve of. The Duty of a Caring Parent Your child needs to be aware that you have no authority or control over what their friends do or don’t do, but you certainly are in charge of your child and intend exercising your authority to keep things in check. Remember you can be a friend to your teenager but your primary role is a parent, and as a patent you must guide and protect your child. They may not always like it and you will sometimes fall out over but you must endeavour to do what you think best. Even if you have done your best, things can still go wrong. You will make mistakes but at least you tried and done the duty of a caring parent which sometimes is all you can do. Set the rules and make the effort to enforce them. To allow your teenager free range and to go unchecked is just being plain negligent.

Women’s Forum Planning for Working Mothers Planning for a working mother becomes all the more important because you have to juggle both a home and a career. Managing both situations can be quite difficult if you have not given any thought to pregnancy planning. Fact is that planning a pregnancy gives you ample time to get things right and welcome the newborn baby into a positive and healthy atmosphere. Working Mother or Stay-At-Home Mom Having a baby means a lot of changes in the mother’s life; first you must decide whether you want to continue to work or be a stay-at-home mom. This is a personal choice that one has to make after great consideration and both situations have their advantages and disadvantages. If you rejoin work soon after the birth, who will breastfeed and take care of the baby? So you must decide on the best time for you to go back to work. If you have a caring partner who is willing to share responsibility, pregnancy can be quite a celebration. Is Your Work Place Surrounded By Toxins or Health Hazards? The other important issue about pregnancy planning is if you work in a place where there are hazardous chemicals, radiation, dry cleaning fluids or anesthesia; these can harm the baby. You must talk to your doctor and ask his advice on whether you should change your job or take an extended work break. Asking Your Employer for Leave The Family Medical Leave Act sets 12 weeks of maternity leave in companies that have more than 50 employees. You can also ask your employer to club this leave with your sick leave and vacation leave. When is the best time to let your employer know that you are pregnant? It is in the first trimester, when you start showing. Make sure that you have a clear picture in your mind about whether you are going to get back to work or be a stay-at-home mom before you discuss things with him. The Financial Aspect And finally, the finances have to be taken care of. Are you willing to allow your partner to provide for you and your child? What is your financial situation? Or would you prefer taking up a part time job to continue earning? As said before, planning for working mother can be smooth sailing if you have a caring partner and the two of you support each other. This way, you can plan the pregnancy together every step of the way and your pregnancy can be a wonderful experience

DEGA A FINISH TO REMEMBER! By Mike Woodard firstname.lastname@example.org Thank goodness for steel fences at NASCAR races these days. Within a hundred yards of the finish Carl Edwards forced a bump on himself…turned reverse and flew away like a bird! The “Earnhart Bar”, center of the windshield, probably saved Edwards life...and the fence probably save a hundred spectators lives. Although seven fans were injured, only one seriously with a broken jaw, the safety precautions come to life we witnessed in this crash proves that NASCAR has come a long way. The idea of restrictor plate racing and exact shaped vehicles, which keeps the vehicles bunched up together will again come under scrutiny at NASCAR. Frankly, I don’t know how to address the fact that cars can today be made to go speeds which would defy any large race track designer. Dega and Daytona at around 3 mile oval allow such high speeds that there was fear, which appears well founded, that deaths would mount
both on the track and in the stands without them. Imagine those cars going 220+ mph... and Edwards sailing over that fence. Another problem was the big pile up early in the race. But I don’t think that was restrictor related...they’d have to narrow the number of cars down to 20 or so to reduce this type accident. Gordon finished after being involved in that wreck, but limping in took him off the top standing in the cup race. For me the high point of the race was seeing Dale Jr. back in the hunt. Everybody loves him, and he’s a great racer. He’s just been on a long dry spell which has been disappointing. That he came in second, missed Edwards flying by him, was good stuff. And now comes the new generation of racers, with names we aren’t familiar with...the winner is...Brad Keselowski…. who’s heard of him before? Dale Earhart! Dale owns the car that Brad won in. So...Dale did win after all.
Q: Alabama was voted AP National Champion after what upset game in the Rose Bowl in 1979? A: No. 3 UCS beat No. 1 Ohio State
Gas, steel, and food prices went sky high this time last year. About the time we were due for a housing related recession anyway. This was due to and bound to bring down corrupt lending institutions. We’ve ended up with a big time recession because these speculators drove prices on gas, food, and steel sky high..and due to those corrupt lenders. Why didn’t these industry “leaders” notice what was happening and put the brakes on? Because they were stuffing their pockets with cash as fast as they could. Greed. You’re going to hear them crying some blues now….but those will be crocodile tears. They put away several years income in one year. Wall Street and big corporate executives did the same. The fat cats got so fat they could barely walk. The differential between the rich and poor widened…drastically, yet again...after 30 years of it happening. Meanwhile, honest and hard working folks are now behind the eight ball worse than ever thanks to these sick rich. And now our government is stepping in to “improve” the economy dealing with these very same narcissists, who don’t care about anyone or anything but themselves. Who expects them to take our tax dollars and do the right thing? I don’t. And some bankers among them...don’t want the government bailout money because they want to keep their greedy game going and if the money the government wants to “help” them in a way that doesn’t help them personally they don’t want part of it. Save America? If they’d cared about America this wouldn’t have happened in the first place. So what’s a government or the people to do when it’s “leadership” outside of Washington has gotten as corrupt as Washington itself ? How can you use a dirty rag to clean dirt? There’s no reason to even speak to this question right now because no one in power, government or private, would do what needs to be done anyway. They either don’t get it, or don’t want to get it. I can tell you where it goes from here. The economy will revive, by 2010 or 2011, and things will get better. But fundamentally the United States economy will be sick, and will continue to get sicker as long as we close industry and borrow money from China to operate. We spend too much for health care and education to be competitive in the world economy. I see nothing on the horizon to change that except for a little talk from the democrats during the election. We’ve found ourselves in new un-charted waters. Where those in power are leading us on the path of the Roman Empire. Anybody got a fiddle? People must get informed by something other than our partisan media. Shame on CNN and FOX News for presenting half the issues as whole. One slanted left, the other right...neither giving the whole story about most issues they present. We must stand up and force reform in media, government, and business for America to have a chance.

Musings On Faith
With Tom Woodard
Find past and current Musings on Faith articles online at www.downyonderantiques.com “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise (Psalm 51:17, KJV).” This is a well-known Scripture, but what does it mean? First of all, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit.” Another way of saying this is “My sacrifice to You, O God, is a broken spirit.” In other words, broken in the willfulness of man, convicted of my sin, repentant, and turning to God for salvation or redemption; realizing that all else is meaningless, and that the answer lies only in God. If we are not “broken” in spirit, we will not turn to God in the way that He wishes for us to do. We are not His slaves, but His children. Nevertheless, if we come before Him in an attitude of entitlement or privilege, we will not surrender our will to God’s will for our lives, and we will not receive the fullness of the blessings He wishes to pour out upon us. We will still have one foot in the carnal world and the other in the Spiritual. The Scriptures make clear, over and over again, that this is unacceptable to God. Then comes that word “contrite”. What is “contrite”? Webster’s New International Dictionary of the English Language defines it as “(1) Regretful, sorrowful, broken in spirit because of a sense of sin; (2) Broken down with grief and penitence; deeply sorrowful for sin; humbly and thoroughly penitent.” A penitent person is a person who repents of sin (Webster’s). If we approach God full of pride, or defensiveness, or denial, or self-justification, or uttering excuses, we certainly are not contrite. Why is this important? Well, first of all, God tells us, through His Word (Psalm 51:17, above) that if we do not come to Him with a “broken spirit” and “a broken and a contrite heart” He will despise our supplications and prayers. Why? Because they are prayers of words only, and not uttered from a soul deeply yearning for the healing of the Spirit of God. Word prayers are distinguished by utterances of repentance not followed up with actions reflecting true repentance. If we come to God with a broken and contrite heart, seeking His will for our lives, then both God and man will see a difference in us. There will be a turning away from sin and from the carnal life toward a new life, lived in accord with the Spirit and will of God, through Jesus Christ. Contrition is necessary to true repentance and a genuine turning away from sin. Let us not deceive ourselves. Do we have a true repentance, borne of a broken spirit and a broken and contrite heart? If so, the fruit of that contrite and broken condition will be a life lived in daily obedience to God’s will for our lives. Father, give us a broken spirit and a contrite heart, in Christ’s name, Amen. I tried to think about how many birthday parties I had when I was young. Let me see…… none! As a result of all of that rejection, I am now living as a victim of society, haunted by my past. I also remember when my children were born. I had absolutely no desire to watch my wife give childbirth. I took no classes to enhance the experience. Men just didn’t do that. At the last minute, I did decide to go in with her on all of our children, without Lamaze. There’s no doubt that I am obsessive compulsive now because of my ignorance then. And what about showers? I’m not talking about the water type, but the baby, wedding, newcomer, housewarming, and any-other-occasion shower. It seems that showers are now as much a part of a man’s life as they are a woman’s. I just can’t get there from here. I think that’s a metrosexual thing. And not only are showers a common occurrence for every occasion, but now they are telling us where to buy them something from. Each invitation will let us know where they are “registered.” I’m still having a hard time getting there from here. When my children were young, I let them know they would be having only a limited number of birthday parties. Not only did mom and dad have limited funds, but so did all of our friends, and family. And if I didn’t watch it, there would be some shower/party event every weekend! I knew hunting and fishing would be nonexistent if I let that happen. I must admit my wife was not in compete agreement. After all, these were HER children and she wanted everybody to rejoice with her each year. After some compromise, we both were satisfied that our children would not suffer because of the lack of attention they would receive compared to all the other children. I would say they turned out fine, but I’m leaving them in the barrel, with the lid on it, until they’re thirty. I’ll know then. Now I’m not trying to be a party pooper, or an old fuddy-duddy, but I’m just not ready to sit around a room with other men and sell Tupperware. The next thing you know there will be a Mary Kay party just for men. Well, maybe I am trying to be a party pooper. In fact, I guess I’m a little upset. Okay, I’m mad! If she could register for china at Belk’s, what was really wrong with me registering in the fishing department at the Bass Pro Shop
