The Legislative Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) held its first meeting on December 21, 2011, in the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee room in Augusta. Dillon Pesce of Lisbon Falls was one of 16 youths from across Maine chosen to serve on

Lisbon Student Appointed to L.A.Y.C. this Council, which advises the Legislature on issues related to young Mainers. He was nominated by Senator Garrett Mason (R-Androscoggin County) and appointed by Senate President Kevin Raye (RWashington County). “I am pleased to ap-

point Dillon to the Legislative Youth Advisory Council,” said President Raye. “Maine youth participating in State government is an essential part of good citizenship. The Legislative Youth Advisory Council, and other similar programs such as

Girls State, Boys State, and the YMCA's Youth in Government program, are great training grounds for the next generation of Maine leaders." The LYAC is additionally comprised of two members of the House of Representatives and two members of the State Senate. Senator Garrett Mason is one of the two Senate Senators appointed by the Senate President. “I was very impressed

with Dillon’s contributions to the Council this week,” said Senator Mason. “If we continue to have more young people like Dillon getting involved, Maine’s future looks very bright.” The purposes of the council, as put forth in the law, are to advise the Legislature on proposed and pending legislation, state budget expenditures and policy matters related to youth. The council also conducts periodic semi-

nars on leadership, government and the Legislature and reports annually to the Legislature. The law instructs the council to examine issues of importance to youth, including education, employment, strategies to increase youth participation in municipal and state government, safe environments for youth, foster care, poverty, homelessness and access to services. n

There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative. -W. Clement Stone
