The Oak Hill girls basketball team hopes to raise $500 for the 2016 Cancer Challenge 20/20. They have been accpeting $1 donations at recent home games and challenging students and staff to make donations also. The Champions for Hope celebration, a moving and special part of the Dempsey Challenge weekend, will be held for the first time in the all-new Agora Grand Event Center during Dempsey Challenge weekend.

LCFCU Offers Four $1,000 Scholarships to Qualifying High School Seniors

In 2000, the Lisbon Credit Union developed a Scholarship Fund to help our graduating seniors realize their dreams. Later that year, one of our original founders, Rochel Livernois, passed away.

Mr. Livernois served as Treasurer/Manager from the Credit Union’s beginning in 1959 through 1985. The scholarship fund was renamed to the Rochel ‘Russ’ Livernois Memorial Scholarship to honor his years of service and dedication.

Each year, the Credit Union awards four $1,000 scholarships to local high school graduates. The scholarships are awarded based on academic achievements as well as community involvement. Scholarship dollars are paid directly to the schools after completion of their first semester.

To be eligible to apply for the scholarship program, a student must: •Be a graduating senior •Be a Member of our Credit Union or a child of a Member •Have a High School GPA of 2.50 or higher •Be accepted to a 2 or 4 year accredited post secondary school •Studies must begin within 1 year of the award Applications are available online at www.lisboncu.org (under Community Involvement), at the Credit Union, or at the guidance office of local high schools by February of each year.

One of our area agency on aging responsibilities is to produce a strategic plan for how we are going to better serve the residents of our area, during the next four years, 2017-2020. Our plan becomes part of the State’s plan, which then becomes part of the federal plan for serving older adults.

Traps John McDonald

It’s when winter starts getting serious that I recall the time when my friends and I went into the “forest products” business. We wanted to do our part to help provide the raw material for Maine’s unique wooden lobster traps. The fact that I survived the woodland experience to tell this story is proof to me that my Guardian Angel is better than most.

Back when lobster traps were made of wood, our town had a trap mill, a place where oak logs were milled-out and sawed into laths and trap frame stock.

This particular year I heard that the trap mill was paying higher than normal prices for oak logs. Knowing that my father would support my hard work and initiative, I asked if I could borrow his 4-wheel-drive Landrover to thin-out some oak trees on the woodlot he owned down on the Sprague Falls Road.

Dad approved of the plan, only after learning that my friend Charlie - who knew something about felling large trees would be there as part of my crew.

Dad’s only words of advice: Be careful, son.

I’m sure my friends and I had every intention of being careful, as Dad advised, but, well, stuff happens.

When the operation got underway I remember cutting down a fairly large oak tree and after limbing it, I hooked it up to the ‘come-along’ on the front of the Landrover.

Everything was going fine until the tree got hung-up behind a standing tree.

My oak tree stopped dead in its tracks, but the Landrover’s come-along kept running, assuming the oak tree would continue to ‘come along,’ which of course it didn’t.

At some point Charlie, who saw the oak tree hung up, ran over and shut off the Landrover and the ‘come along.’ He then tried to explain something about torque and what could have happened if the cable on the comealong had snapped and

the large hook on the end of the cable came flying back in my general direction.

As I recall, Charlie said that the large steel hook on the end of the cable would have come flying back toward the Landrover and gone through my skull like a sharp object through a soft pumpkin. While he was in an instructive mode Charlie also explained that we had to be careful with branches bent by a falling trees. He said when finally freed, branches can swing with great force like a baseball bat and do a lot of damage to anything or anyone in its way.

I didn’t like the idea of having my head compared to a soft pumpkin but I got the point. Once we finished our lesson with Charlie and got things mostly straightened out with the come-along I went on to cut down another large oak.

When it finally crashed to the ground, I began limbing it and as I sawed the last large branch the

massive trunk dropped right right on my feet.

What happened then? Well, all I can say is the reason I still have two feet to call my own is because there were about 24 inches of soft snow under the feet the oak tree dropped on.

It was around that same time I made the decision to choose a career that would have me working mostly indoors - away from mature oaks. n

Lisbon Community Federal Credit Union Helps Provide Financial Education

Along with other Jeannette G. Morin chapter members, (Atlantic Regional, Five County Credit Union, and Midcoast Credit Union), Lisbon Community Federal Credit Union spent the morning of November 18th helping teens learn about finances through a hands-on lesson.

Maine credit unions introduced the new concept for youth financial education in 2004 entitled - A Money Management Experience.

(These efforts have contributed to Maine’s credit unions being an eleventime winner of The Desjardins Award for Youth Financial Education, making Maine the most recognized Credit Union System in the country.)

This award-winning, half-day event targets high school juniors and seniors and is similar to the game of “LIFE,” where participating students are given a career and monthly income and then have to visit booths associated with various expenses that the aver-

age adult is faced with each month. Costs, such as transportation, housing, clothing, food, student loans, insurance and several other everyday expenses, are filled in on a monthly budget form by each student. At the end of the event, the goal is for students to have monthly budget that does not exceed monthly income.

The 2014/15 school year was the busiest ever with more than 30 fairs taking place during the school year. A total of 6,411 students participated in one of the Maine Credit Union League’s fairs.

Below is a list of most of the fairs that are scheduled for the 2016 school year.

How Can I Help?

Carleen Cote Very often, people who love animals ask if they might help us with the young critters at our rehab center. We explain that one must understand how a little critter reacts to human assistance. A wild animal recognizes its mother by scent and sounds. The young and the females (males too, if they are of a species that takes part in rearing the young) interact and recognize each other by squeals, grunts and other vocalizations. When a critter arrives at the Wildlife Care Center, it enters a foreign environment with the sounds and smells of the human world.

The young animal now has an added stress of becoming familiar with the scent and sounds of their human caregiver. They lie in a foreign environment of towels or blankets, rather than underground or in a nest of leaves and other natural materials.

There is no beating heart or warm furry body to snuggle up to. The critters eventually become familiar with being held in a certain way as they suckle their milk.

Multiple human caregivers,

presenting different scents, and pitch and tone of voice, adds more stress. For this reason, we’ve found that help in feeding the animals is not in their best interest.

Fawns and snowshoe hares are especially susceptible to stress-related diarrhea problems. Also, feeding schedules must be closely adhered to, which is not always possible with volunteer help.

Volunteers are at risk as well. There is always the possibility of being bitten or scratched by one of the critters. In this time of increasing incidents of rabies, protection from this virus should be an essential precaution taken by all rehabbers who care for mammals. People have indicated they would be willing to take the series of vaccinations necessary for protection, however, getting a pre-exposure series of rabies vaccinations should not be taken lightly. As with any foreign substance injected into the human body, the vaccine can present a medical situation such as anaphalactic shock (a serious allergic reaction which affects respiration). Unless someone has a permit to do rehabilitation, works where they have contact with wild or domestic animals, or has

been bitten or exposed to rabies and requires the series of shots, there would probably be some hesitation in administering them.

The cost for this protection can also be prohibitive.

As much as we would like to accommodate enthusiastic, well-meaning and caring volunteers, for our protection and theirs but, most importantly, for the comfort of the critters, we must take all these facts into consideration when someone wishes to help care for the wildlife. However, when we are asked if there is anything we need to facilitate their care, the answer is a definite “Yes!� We are always in need of bird seed, canned and dry dog and cat food, and apples for the deer (but not from recently-sprayed trees). Of course, financial donations are always very much appreciated as well.

Antique Valentine cards will be on display, and members are invited to bring hand-made Valentine cards to exchange.

There will also be a slideshow of recently acquired historical photos from the Lisbon area.

Ice: Is It Safe?

V. Paul Reynolds Each year about this time, the Maine Warden Service urges us to use extreme caution before venturing out onto any ice that may be covering Maine’s waterways.

This is timely advice.

Two winters ago three night-time snowsledders all perished in one night on Rangeley Lake when they and their machines broke through thin ice.

This year, because of the extended period of unseasonably warm December weather, many ponds and lakes remain open, even in the northern part of the state.

As January progresses many bodies of water should “button up.”

Still, caution is always advised. Maine’s lakes and ponds may appear to be frozen, however safe ice conditions cannot be assumed.

Ice conditions vary

greatly throughout the state, and while ice conditions may be safe in some spots, conditions can be very dangerous in others. The Maine Warden Service is recommending that people check the thickness of any ice before venturing out for any activity on frozen water.

If you must go on the ice, the Maine Warden Service offers these tips for ice safety: •Never guess the thickness of the ice Check it! Check the ice in several different places using an auger or some other means to make a test hole and determine the thickness.

Make several, beginning at the shore, and continuing as you go out.

Check the ice with a partner, so if something does happen, someone is there to help you. If you are doing it alone, wear a lifejacket.

•If ice at the shoreline is cracked or squishy, stay off! Watch out for thin, clear or honeycombed ice. Dark snow and dark ice are other signs of weak spots.

•Avoid areas with currents, around bridges

and pressure ridges.

Wind and currents can break ice.

•Parents should alert children of unsafe ice in their area, and make sure that they stay off the ice.

If they insist on using their new skates, suggest an indoor skating rink.

Once on the ice, roll, DON’T WALK, to safety.

•To help someone who has fallen through the ice, lie down flat and reach with a branch, plank or rope or form a human chain. Don’t stand. After securing the victim, wiggle backwards to the solid ice.

Again,snowsledders take note. Snowsledding at night on frozen waterways can be tricky business, especially for those unfamiliar with the conditions of a lake , pond or other waterway.

2½ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. vanilla extract 4 tbsp. cherry juice ½ walnuts ½ cherries

Cream butter and sugar then alternate flour with milk and flavoring. Fold in egg whites, add cherries and nuts. Set oven to 350° and bake for 1 hour. If you would like cherry frosting just add leftover cherry juice to white frosting.

Lisbon Community Federal Credit Union Reaches Fundraising Goal

This year was a fundraising success for the Lisbon Community Federal Credit Union (LCFCU), which met and surpassed its goal of a $5,000 contribution to the Ending Hunger in Maine Campaign.

This milestone could not have been achieved without the support of LCFCU Members.

Membership helped in numerous ways by donating money, supplying baked goods for the annual bake sale, and purchasing raffle tickets for baskets and 50/50 drawings. Along with employ-

ee “pay to wear” jean days, and selling candy bars & local farm goat milk products, the Credit Union and its’ Members have raised $5,250.00 for the 2015 Ending Hunger Campaign!

Because of this campaign and generous community members, there are people in Maine who are not going to bed hungry!

Each year, Lisbon Credit Union participates in the Maine Credit Union League’s Campaign for Ending Hunger. The campaign was established in 1990, and since then has

raised an incredible $5.9 million towards ending hunger in Maine.

The unique and most rewarding aspect of this campaign is the guarantee that “100% of the money raised by credit unions stays in Maine and is distributed to hunger organizations and food pantries throughout Maine.” – Maine Credit Union League.

Statistics show that Maine is the number one state in New England that is currently food insecure.

Our local food pantries are in dire need of supplemen-

tal foods. Reports show that many food pantries in Maine are facing low supplies, leaving their shelves bare and their customers lacking a nutritious diet.

The Lisbon Credit Union’s Social Responsibility Team has organized several fundraisers throughout the years on behalf of the Ending Hunger in Maine Campaign and will begin again to support this worthy cause for the upcoming year of 2016!

Lisbon Community Federal Credit Union Offers Four $1,000 Scholarships In 2000, the Lisbon Credit Union developed a Scholarship Fund to help our graduating seniors realize their dreams. Later that year, one of our original founders, Rochel Livernois, passed away. Mr. Livernois served as Treasurer/ Manager from the Credit

Union’s beginning in 1959 through 1985. The scholarship fund was renamed to the Rochel ‘Russ’ Livernois Memorial Scholarship to honor his years of service and dedication.

Each year, the Credit Union awards four $1,000 scholarships to local high

school graduates. The scholarships are awarded based on academic achievements as well as community involvement.

Scholarship dollars are paid directly to the schools after completion of their first semester.
