Yes, the inside of the Leavitt Institute Building was rocking on Dec. 10 during the 8th Annual Winter Festival Open Houses of the Turner Public Library and the History Museum. The campus was busy too, listening to the caroling of the Leavitt Area High School’s a cappella choir “Hornets in Harmony” in the Gazebo on the Green.

Churches in Jay and Livermore were both represented in the Christmas Holiday Parade. The Nativity scene was selected by both Wayside Bible Baptist Church in Livermore and Faith Way Baptist in Jay. The parade began in downtown Jay and ended at the Livermore Falls Gazebo. Canton artist George Ramos was singing carols all along the way.

Leavitt Teams Win Openers

Adrianna Newton scored her 1000th career point during the 3rd period of the 2011-12 opener for Leavitt Area High School. The senior was a vital part of the Hornets' state championship run last year with her work around the basket. by Victor Block It was the fall of 1777, and General George Washington’s army was reeling from the crushing defeat it suffered in Pennsylvania.

The British forces won the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown, and occupied Philadelphia.

Seeking a winter haven for his disheartened soldiers, and ordered by the Pennsylvania colony’s legislature to wait out the frigid season close to Philadelphia, Washington led his ragtag troops to Valley Forge, 18 miles from the city.

On December 19, what was left of the Continentals – 12,000 poorly fed, ill-equipped warriors – traveled to the place where they would spend the win-

ter. Before the following spring, more than 2,000 of them died, and a legend of the War of Independence was born.

No battles were fought at Valley Forge. Not a shot was fired at an enemy. Yet the setting may be the bestknown site associated with the Revolutionary War. The struggle for survival dramatically conveyed the courage and endurance that characterized the Colonials’ battle for freedom.

For visitors to the area, that story is depicted in exhibits, a film and displays of artifacts, weapons and documents.

Earth embankments mark the lines of defense that General Washington established.

Log structures, reconstructed following Washington’s original

plans, represent the approximately 2,000 huts where the solders lived.

Interpreters in period dress demonstrate the harsh conditions that claimed many lives.

The grounds are dotted by memorials, monuments and historic markers. But more than such symbols, the real story of Valley Forge is brought to life in other more meaningful ways.

Military equipment and paraphernalia recall the victory of spirit over diversity. Copies of letters between the brave men who endured such hardship and their loved ones put a human face on the suffering.

Clothing was inadequate, shoes were hard to come by and blankets were even more scarce. The rough

The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society provides a safe haven for over 5,500 sick,

homeless and abused animals in the greater Androscoggin area per year. The primary support for the shelter comes from fundraising events and donations of concerned citizens.

log huts where the solders lived were damp and overcrowded. The men slept in narrow bunks stacked three high. With icy winds whipping through cracks in the structures, waves of pneumonia and other diseases ravaged the ranks.

In this bleak picture, the first ray of hope arrived in February 1778 in the person of Baron Friedrich von Steuben. A former highranking member of the elite Prussian general staff, this exacting drillmaster offered his services to the patriots.

He wrote a training manual, chose 100 select men, and taught them marching, musketry and bayonet charges. Their skills became the model for the entire army. By spring, a feeling of hope and pride had begun to replace despair.

When the British forces left Philadelphia and moved toward New York, it was a very different American army that pursued them.

The soldiers under Washington’s command would not celebrate their final victory over the Redcoats until 1781 in Yorktown, but they had won another important battle. They had overcome the anguish that accompanied them to Valley Forge.

They themselves had been forged into a fighting force with new skills, and a sense of confidence and pride that eventually would prevail.

The story of this transformation comes alive at Valley Forge. It is a place that saw not a single military victory, but rather a conquest over the lack of confidence, weariness and uncertainty that had ac-

companied George Washington’s army there during the winter of 1777-1778.

Spruce Mountain football player and senior Bill Calden has learned to keep his eyes up and look ahead. This past season, as a running back, he passed the 1000-yard rushing mark and is already looking ahead to his first year of college play.

His running success was due, in part, to the time he spent at Boston College Football Camp. “I learned from them [as well as his coach, Mark Bonnevie] to keep my eyes up.” He says this helped a lot in finding openings and making the cuts to open field.

Bonnevie says that he’s happy Calden took to the learning.

“It’s much better than him trying to run over people and possibly get injured”, he adds.

Eyes Up – Looking Ahead The Spruce coach says they (the opponents) were out to get him and he did suffer injuries from getting tackled so much.

Calden scored three TDs and ran for 333 yards in the season’s first game. Had he not lost a game and a half to a shoulder injury, his season total would likely have been even greater. Coach Bonnevie noted that it was ‘hard to get him off the field he’s so competitive’. He did take Calden out on occasion so he wouldn’t get too beaten up and to save him for post-season play.

A good portion of my conversation with Bill was about next year. Calden is just 5-feet 8-inches tall, though he’s a solid 175 pounds. As the case all through his career, he’s clearly focused on using this time to improve his speed and now, to build his muscle/ weight to 185. He’s in the gym almost every day and taking a

college-level class at the University of Maine, Farmington.

He also works at Pizza Hut. Bill remembers being a “shy kid with no name,” meaning that no one recognized the

name Billy Calden with anything successful. Though he didn’t begin lifting weights until his Jay High School days, he found early on that his love for, and skill at football could

earn him some recognition. “It took time [persistence] to pay off.”

When Jay and Livermore Falls high schools consolidated Calden was fine with it. He

looked forward to the tougher competition and recognition in Class B sports. Having See Eyes Up on page 24

French Heritage Language Program The Franco-American Heritage Center and the University of Southern Maine’s Franco-American Collection recently collaborated to start a pilot program for local schools by co-sponsoring a visit by renowned Lewiston storyteller Michael Parent to Sherwood Heights School in Auburn on November 18.

The program, which was an internal event for Sherwood Heights students only, featured some of Michael’s famous songs and stories, as well the opportunity for some hands-on activities, such as learning to step-dance, and play the spoons.

The event was the initiative of Doris Bonneau, a retired educator, who has been organizing Saturday morning ‘Fun in French’ sessions for children aged 3-10 and their parents or care givers at the FrancoAmerican Heritage Center since September.

“Reconnecting children and adults to their Francophone Heritage is energizing and sparks collaboration with other organizations work-

ing towards the same end,” says Bonneau.

Co-sponsoring the event is USM’s Franco-American Collection. “It just made sense for us to work together on something like this,” says Collection Coordinator, James Myall. “Having local children engage with Franco heritage is something both our organizations support, and by pooling our resources, we can make a real difference.”

Parent’s visit marked the launch a pilot after-school French Program for 3 rd and 4th grade Sherwood Heights’ students and other future events at LewistonAuburn schools.

This new program is part of the nationally-recognized French Heritage Language Program, already in place in New York and Miami.

It will debut in Auburn and Augusta Maine this spring.

Cub Scouts Get a Lesson in Engineering Turner's Cub Scout Web 2's had a very special guest at their last meeting. Mr. Charlie Lind was invited to speak to the scouts about engineering. The boys were taught about Civil Engineering and

how to construct different types of bridges such as Plank, Pier, Beam, Truss and Arch Bridges. Mr.Lind then divided the boys into teams to design and build their own bridges. They then held a competition

to see who built the strongest bridge by testing them with weights. All boys did equally well and had a great time. A Special Thank You to Mr.Lind for your time and generousity to scouting.

Lewiston Auburn Film Festival 2012

The second annual Lewiston Auburn Film Festival (LAFF) is going to be a three-day extravaganza, April 13 – 15, complete with opening night festivities, a full day of films in downtown L/A, top-notch awards show, brunch, and filmmaker panels!

Based on the success of last year’s event, where more than 1,000 festival goers attended screenings of 100+ films from all over the world, the staff at LAFF has been working hard to make LAFF 2012 bigger, better and on par with festivals found in larger, more well-known cities. We’re happy to report that LAFF 2012 is going to do just that.

On Friday, April 13, 2012 we will be holding our Opening Night Party at the Franco-American Heritage Center on Cedar Street in Lewiston, Maine.

The evening kicks off with a cocktail hour where ticket holders can mingle and network. The party then proceeds upstairs to the gorgeous performance hall. Here, guests will be welcomed to the official start of the festival and get a sneak preview of selected People’s Choice nominated films. An after party downstairs will cap off the night in true Hollywood style.

Folllowing the films and a brief intermission, acclaimed international singer-songwriter Don McLean will perform his first-ever show in Lewiston. McLean is best known for the hits, “American Pie”, “Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)” and “Crying.” He will be performing an hour-long show with full band to wrap up opening night of the festival.

2012 will be our flagship day of world-class independent film viewing.

Seven downtown Lewiston-Auburn venues including She Doesn’t Like Guthries, Gallery 5, Community Little Theater, Androscoggin Chamber of Commerce building, Free Grace Church and both public libraries will be transformed yet again into movie theaters for a day. Festival goers will be able to choose films by perusing our free program, which has descriptions, schedules and locations listed. We encourage folks to get out and walk, taking in the sights of L/A, however shuttle service will also be available.

On the evening of Saturday, April 14, LAFF 2012 is pulling out all the stops for our awards ceremony and gala dinner at the Hilton Garden Inn Auburn Riverwatch Hotel in Auburn, Maine. Ticket holders will be front and center to see who wins this year’s awards: People’s Choice Feature Film, People’s Choice Documentary Film, People’s Choice Short Film, People’s Choice Experimental Film, Best Director, Best in Maine, Best in Festival.

They’ll also get a terrific meal and be entertained by the likes of AudioBody and the Maine Music Society’s Androscoggin Chorale.

Sunday, April 15, VIP ticket holders only will be invited to attend an elaborate brunch at Fish Bones American Grill where they

will be welcome to participate in discussions with others about the films they saw over the weekend. Afterward, VIP and Sunday ticket holders will join at The Public Theatre for an exclusive viewing of the award winning films from the previous night and a panel discussion with invited filmmakers.

Sticking with our mission to promote and support independent film made both locally and abroad, we have already seen submissions from as far away as Japan and Australia and as close to home as Lewiston. We are confident that the level of films shown this year will be of the upmost quality.

Reader Recipes: Super Bowls (and Plates and Pans) What a great turnout of recipies last month. Hope you were all able to enjoy some of those tasty morsels with your family and friends.

This month we’re concetrating on the Super Duper recipies our readers like sharing with friends while watching some of the best advertising campaigns to be presented each year. Oh yeah, and then there’s that game that’s being played around it, you know the one; with the odd shapped ball and goal posts? Why not try one or two of these yummy dishes during your big party this season.

February’s column will have a dual theme. Since Valentine’s Day falls in February and it’s also heart health awareness month, we’d like to showcase heart healthy recipes and choco-

late (preferably the dark variety due to its ties to heart health).

So make a choice: something sweetly decadent or a savory heart healthy alternative. If we print your recipe, you’ll be entered for a chance to win a gift certificate to a local business.

1 bag of your favorite nacho chips 1 can of refried beans 2 cups of shredded cheese (again your favorite, I use a Mexican mix or what I have on hand) 1 jar of salsa (again use mild, medium or hot whatever your fans enjoy!)

Jarred jalapeno peppers to taste Diced onions You can add 1/2 lb. of hamburg prepared with taco seasoning or chicken, or chili as well.

Super Bowl Dip 1 lb. Velveeta® cheese (plain or Mexican), cubed 1 can (15 oz. Hormel® Chili (no beans) 1 jar salsa (15 oz.) yor favorite, your heat Mix all together in a crockpot on low. Stirring occasionally. Serve with tortilla chips, carrots, cel-

ery, etc.

To kick up the heat, add hot sauce or cayenne powder.

Can be doubled or tripled, depending on your crowd.

Ranch Ham Rollups 2 packages (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened. (very soft or use mixer) 1 envelope Ranch salad dressing mix 3 green onions, or bunch of chives, chopped (this reader prefers chives) 1 lb. flour tortillas (8 inch) 1 lb. thin sliced deli ham.

Your choice, pre-packaged is fine.

Mix cream cheese and ranch mix until smooth and and chives and mix well.

Spread cheese mixture, about 3 TBSP on each tortilla. Top each with 2-3 slices of ham. Roll up tightly, wrap in plastic, chill about 45 minutes. Unwrap and slice into pinwheels. Can be doubled.

Sticky Chicken (Awesome) 1 5 lb. bag of frozed plain party wings 1/2 cups honey 2 TBSP soy sauce 4 garlic cloves (2 tsp minced jar variety) 11/2 tsp ginger 2 TBSP Worchestershire sauce 1 TBSP paprika 1 tsp black pepper 2 cups ketchup 2 TBSP vinegar or lemon juice 2 TBSP vegetable oil 1/8 tsp hot pepper sauce.

Cook wings at 350° for 30-45 minutes meanwhile, mix other ingredients together in a bowl.

Put half of sauce in large crockpot or 2 (divide into quarters accordingly). Add drained wings, cover with remaining sauce.

Cook on low for 1-2 hours

Ver much a favorite at her house on Super Bowl Sunday! Very messy so serve with lots of napkins!

Wesley Walton

1929-2011

1926-2011

Wesley R. Walton, 85, a longtime resident of North Turner, died peacefully at his son, Ricky’s home in Hartford on Wednesday, December 14th. He was born August 16, 1926 in Dixfield, the son of Ralph and Lelia (Holman) Walton. He was raised in Dixfield and attended school in Dixfield and Buckfield. In 1945 he was drafted into the Army to serve in W.W.II and was proud part of the Rainbow Division. Upon his return in 1946, he did numerous odd jobs, made apple boxes, and cut and hauled wood.

On July 26, 1949 in Turner, he married his wife of 50 years, Virginia Libby. She passed away June 1, 2000.

He worked plowing snow for the town of Turner under his own business Walton Trucking; and also worked for Bluerock Industries until his retirement. After he retired he kept busy working on and enjoying trucks.

In 2002 he came out of retirement and opened Walton Industries with his son Ricky. He continued working through 2008 when he retired for the second time.

Wesley was a member of the Buckfield American Legion. He enjoyed his family, friends and nights at home with the boys, watching TV and gossiping about old times. He is survived by his two sons, Ralph Walton and his wife Monique and Ricky Walton and his wife Lisa all of Hartford; his grandchildren, Dominque, Jason, Amy, Rebecca and Mark, 5 great-grandchildren; his brother Delbert Walton and his wife Marcelene of Livermore and his sister, Lola Gardella of Port Charlotte, FL. and his dogs, Daisy Mae and Lacey. He was predeceased by his wife Virginia “Ginny” Walton, his brothers, Dick and Bud Walton and his sister, Althea Fish. The family would like to thank Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice for their wonderful care of Wesley and his nurse Jessica for being so kind. Rita L. Rose 1927-2011

Rita L. Estes Rose, 84, a resident of Livermore, died Christmas morning, December 25th at Victorian Villa Nursing Home in Canton. She was born July 12, 1927 in Lewiston, the daughter of Forest E. and Adeline (Cooly) Estes. Rita attended school in Turner and was a graduate of Edward Little High School in Auburn. She made her life as a homemaker and enjoyed taking care of her family. On September 28, 2001 in Turner she married Hugh Rose.

David H. Allen, Sr., 82, longtime Livermore Falls businessman, died Monday afternoon, December 19th at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, following a lingering illness. He was born April 7, 1929 in Rumford, the son of Stuart and Frances (McLeod) Allen. He was a 1946 graduate of Mexico High School.

Dave joined the U.S. Navy serving from 1946 to 1948 during W.W.II. When he returned from the military he continued his education in radio and television in Boston and also participated in the semipro football league in Mexico, Maine. On February 12, 1949, he married his wife of 60 years, Birdena “Dena” Bourdeau.

She passed away August 23, 2009. They moved to Livermore Falls where Dave and Dena owned and operated Allen’s TV for over 50 years. He was a life member of the AmVets Post # 33 in Jay and the Kiwanis Club in Livermore

Falls. Dave was always supportive of his boys, David, Steve and Richie, he was always at their sporting events and never missed a game and his support continued on with his grandchildren. David was an avid New England sports fans, and especially enjoyed the Celtics basketball. He enjoyed times with family and friends, fishing, going out for breakfast at the local restaurants and hanging out in the shop with his son David. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by his family and the community. He is survived by his three sons, David H. Allen, Jr. and his wife Teri of Readfield and their children, Heidi, David, Duncan, Emily and Chloe; Steve Allen of Livermore Falls and his children, Nissa and Brandon; and Richard Allen and his wife Pam of Mexico, and their children, Jessica, Lucas and Devon; seven great-grandchildren, Alex, Noah, Elijah, Elana, Izraelle, Amara, and Madeline, and his brother, Donald Allen of Lincoln. George Campbell of Turner debuted his new book, "Busch North Scene: The Busch Years 1987-2007," at a book launch that was held on December 17 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Auburn.

Campbell signed dozens of copies of the new book

along with two-time NASCAR Champion Brad Leighton, who wrote the foreword for the book.

Campbell covered auto racing for a variety of national and regional publications in the 1990’s. In 1999 he launched his own news print publication,

Busch North Scene. The titled of the paper came from Anheuser Busch, who had bought the naming rights from Campbell.

His goal was to cover NASCAR in the northeast region of the country with

the newspaper, and focus on the popular NASCAR touring series in the region, the Busch North Series. Within two years, Campbell and his staff members had grown the paper into the top-selling NASCAR newspaper on newsstands throughout much of New England.

The new book recaps the racers, teams and events that shaped the NASCAR Busch North Series from 1987 through 2007. Those were the years that the very popular northeast based autoracing series was sponsored

by Busch Beer. The book contains fun and informative personal reflections from Campbell and Busch North Scene staff members, as well as many of the personalities that made the series popular.

Out of the Box Theater presents “Chosen: Adoption Stories” The First Universalist Church Theater of Auburn is presenting "Chosen: Adoption Stories," an Out of the Box Theater production, January 21-22 and 2829. The new play, written and directed by Lewiston playwright Linda Britt, chronicles the joys and the heartbreaks of the adoption process.

Actors portraying adoptees, adoptive parents, birth parents, wannabe adoptive parents, take the stage individually to tell their stories, woven into a narrative that explores the difficulties and rewards of adoption.

Recycling - Do It! Dear EarthTalk: Recycling can be a somewhat time-consuming task; so can you please provide some benefits of taking the time to separate my trash?

-- Joseph Jiminez, Houston, TX Recycling, which turns materials that would otherwise be incinerated or become landfill-clogging waste into valuable resources, has become second nature for many Americans. As many as four out of five U.S. households already take the time to separate recyclables from trash. Those hold-outs not yet willing to bother should consider the benefits to their household and society at large.

First and foremost for consumers is saving money.

Many municipalities across the U.S. today don’t charge customers for curb-side pickup of recyclables but continue to charge for garbage pick-up, so recycling recipes from page 8

Nothin’ but Small Talk…Fearless Fire Horses

For 50 years, thundering hooves and proud horses carried firefighters and their equipment to every fire in town. From the end of the Civil War to around 1915, these brave fire horses were relied upon to save homes and lives. More time was spent and more expenses incurred when buying one fire horse than ten firemen. Since the destruction of the Jamestown settlement in 1608, one of the greatest dangers to early urban Americans has been fire. As cities grew, so did the danger of fire.

Fire horses came in 3 classifications: the lightweight 1000lb horse that was used on the hose wag-

ons, the middleweight 1,400lb horses was used on the steamers, and the large 1700lb horse that pulled the hook and ladders as well as all heavy equipment. Fire horses were mostly draft crosses. A fire horse was required to have lots of stamina, strength, and natural ability. Teams were matched based on size, color and general appearance when possible. Their training took between one and two years and only about one in a hundred would make the selection. When the heavier and more efficient hook and ladders were introduced in the 1850’s, horses took over the most important role in the city’s fire departments. The pounding on the hard paved streets in the city at a high rate of speed took its toll on the horses. The average working life of fire horses was four or five years.

61 years of service to the Bank. Norris first joined the Board in 1969, serving as vice chair of the Board from 1982 to 2007 and board chair from 2007 to 2008. Most recently she has been a member of the Board Contributions/CRA Committee, Audit Committee, Governance & Compensation Committee and Investment Committee. Her retirement will be effective as of December 31, 2011.

Norris began her career with Mechanics Savings Bank as a teller in 1950.

fighting and intricate systems were created to speed up the harnessing of the fire horse teams. When an alarm sounded, stall doors were automatically opened and horses were moved below their suspended harness.

The harnesses had hinged collars and would drop on their backs and quickly secured by the driver. In two

or three minutes the teams could be ready to go! It took hours and hours of training in the stalls, getting used to the special hitches and the sound of the alarms. Some larger cities even had "horse colleges" where fire horses were trained.

The fire horse’s health was always the #1 concern for the firemen. Routine vet

checks, the best quality hay and grain, and routine exercise was the utmost importance. The drivers were required to groom their horses daily and had a strict feeding schedule. It was stated in the rules and regulation that “Horses must be treated kindly and taught by kindness.” Many of the firemen of the day said the horses received better care than the firemen. It was also said that they loved their job and the sound of the alarm and the hint of smoke would get them overly excited.

Firemen, as well as neighborhood residents, took pride in the appearance and performance of their local fire horses. These animals were a huge part of the community and became local celebrities with residents, especially children, who often brought their favorite horse treats, such as sugar cubes or apples, during the

Norris graduated from Bates College with a Bachelor’s degree in economics. Throughout her career she has served on a number of local Boards of Directors including Bates

College, Central Maine Medical Center, Central Maine Community College, Center for Financial Studies and Patron’s Oxford Mutual Insurance Company (predecessor of Patron’s Oxford Insurance Company), among others.

Norris is a resident of Auburn.

In Maine, the city of Portland heavily relied on its fire horses up until 1929 when the city retired the last two fire horses and became completely motorized. Children cried after watching “Dan and Pete” serve the city for 12 years and gathering every night at 8:59pm to say good night to the big black steeds. To this day the brave, strong, and fearless fire horses are still remembered with gallant pictures of them racing to fires and newspaper articles saved from the past. If given a chance, one should tour the Portland Fire Museum and see the original horse stalls and the apparatus used with the fire horses. Fire horses are now in the past but should never be forgotten. n

Donna loved flying squirrels. Because of her, we always had a place to release the squirrels in the fall – a place where they would be provided with a safe haven and feeders supplied with their favorite foods. The releasable bobcats were transported by Donna to her favorite secure sites far from busy highways and human activity.

For years, she arrived at just the right times to help, when we were exhausted!

She'd deliver hot meals to us – and every meal included several desserts! If laundry needed to be hung out to dry, Donna would do it, returning to fold the many baskets full of dry towels used for the animals.

We needed only to mention projects for the better care of the animals and Donna would rally her relatives and friends. They work would be completed quickly and with little cost to us.

She also provided all the food for the workers. She thought of many fundraising ideas to help raise money to support the wildlife in our care. She organized everything from start to finish.

She raised over $8,000 for the Center.

Donna was always only a phone call away, always happy to help out. Unfortunately, we will no longer be able to call Donna. There will be no more offerings of hot meals and helping hands. In October, our loyal friend passed into a better place.

Picture this: the shooting has started but producer David O Selznick doesn’t feel the script is just right (write?), so he gets Hollywood’s best screenwriter (Ben Hecht), and pulls the

director (Victor Fleming) from the set of The Wizard of Oz and the fun begins.

Hecht hasn’t read the book, so Selznick locks them all in a room with lots of “brain food” and he and Fleming act it out so Hecht “gets the picture.”

Lots of enthusiasm and some slapstick ensue in the process of realizing a serious dream. Watch for the

depths of the characters as they express their dreams and beliefs—it’s more than just a laugh!

USM Offering $1 Million in New Scholarships In response to increasing college costs, the University of Southern Maine will be awarding an additional $1 million in new scholarships to high school students who demonstrate academic achievement and promise. USM is funding the scholarships through

internal reallocation of resources.

The $1 million in new aid will allow USM to provide scholarships to approximately 83 high school seniors who enroll at USM in the fall of 2012.

The additional $1 million represents a more than 15

percent increase in the $7 million of university financial aid available for current students. In the last two fiscal years, USM also has attracted more than $1 million in private donations for new scholarships.

Unless you have winter hobbies or sports that get you moving outside, cold weather can discourage even the most motivated exercisers. Lack of motivation and hibernation through the winter season can easily result in packing on unwanted pounds which impacts your health.

You don’t have to let cold weather interrupt your exercise routine. Maine winters and cold weather give you the opportunity to change it up and bundle

up. Just remember to be safe while enjoying cold weather activities.

If you take certain precautions most anyone can exercise safely outside during cold weather. Check with your doctor if you have certain conditions, such as heart disease, asthma, Raynaud’s disease and diabetes. Cold weather exercise and a change in your normal exercise routine can impact certain medications and health conditions.

Your physician should be able to advise you and or make adjustments to your meds when made aware of your cold weather exercise plans and goals.

Dressing too heavily in cold weather can be a problem. Exercise generates heat which causes you

to sweat. Damp skin and clothing from perspirations in cold weather can chill you. By dressing in layers you can prevent overheating and remove a layer before you start to sweat. The first layer close to your skin should be synthetic material such as polypropylene, which draws moisture away from your body. Never wear cotton against your skin in the winter. Cotton, once damp, will stay damp against your skin and make you even colder. Your top layer should be waterproof and breathable. The layers in between depend on your size. If you are lean with less body fat you will want more layers then someone who is heavier and has more insulation built in. In cold temperatures, it’s very

important to wear a mask or scarf to warm the air before it enters your lungs. It doesn’t matter how tough you are, breathing in cold air is dangerous and harmful to your lungs. The Mayo clinic recommends that when the temperature is less than 0 degrees Farenheit or -17.8 degrees Celsius, a mask should be worn. I wear a mask and scarf whenever the temperatures dip below freezing.

Fingers and toes are vulnerable to frostbite in the cold due to the bodies needs to first generate warmth in the core of your body. To keep hands and feet warm, wear wool or fleece next to your skin as a first layer. If you are bothered with poor circulation or Raynaud’s disease it may be neces-

sary to get some hand and toe warmers. The throw away chemical hand and toe warmers are relatively inexpensive and can last all day inside your mittens or ski boots.

Consider wearing winter exercise shoes a size larger than usual to allow for wool socks. Always wear a hat that covers your ears to prevent frostbite.

Better yet, if you are skiing or snowboarding wear a helmet for warmth and safety!

Exercising when it’s extremely cold, windy or rainy can make you more vulnerable to the cold. If you get chilled or soaked, you may not be able to keep your core body temperature high enough, and layering won’t help if your

clothes are wet. If it’s extremely cold and wet and the road conditions are poor, be safe and take your workout inside for the day.

Wind chill extremes can make exercising outdoors unsafe. Icy roads and sidewalks can be dangerous as well by causing slips and falls and shin splints from straining to keep your balance. As long as you are aware of the cold weather precautions, you can work around the weather and continue to maintain your health through the up and downs of Maine winters.

Before your travel begins, take motion sickness medicine recommended by your physician. There are over-the-counter drugs.

There is also prescription medicine in an adhesive patch or in oral form.

There are other treatments for motion sickness that may benefit some people, but they have not been proven to be consistently effective. High levels of ginger have helped some. There’s an acupuncture point of the wrist that provides relief of nausea during pregnancy and after chemotherapy, but there is contradictory evidence about its effectiveness in treating motion sickness.

Maine “Most Quit-Friendly State” Maine ranks first in the country for the help it offers people living in Maine to quit smoking, according to the American Lung Association’s “Helping Smokers Quit: Tobacco Cessation Coverage 2011” report that cites the five most quit friendly states in the nation. Maine encourages other states to follow its example.

Q. My wife can ride in the car and read a book. It makes me jealous because I’d be sick to my stomach if I did that. How can she do that without feeling queasy?

Little is known about individual susceptibility to motion sickness. Your wife caught a biological break.

You didn’t.

Many people—including me—suffer nausea when traveling by boat, car or airplane. It also happens on rides in amusement parks and playgrounds.

The symptoms of motion sickness are caused by conflicting messages arriving at the central nervous system.

Different parts of your

kinds of cues that you’re in motion, but your eyes see only the unmoving pages of your book.

Here are some tips to avoid motion sickness: Always ride where your eyes will see the same motion that your body senses.

For example, sit in the front seat of the car and look out the windshield to distant scenery; don’t stare at the rapidly passing telephone poles outside the passenger window. I prefer driving so I am forced to look straight ahead.

If you’re on a boat, go up on deck and watch the horizon. Request a cabin in the forward or middle of the ship, or on the upper deck.

On an airplane, sit by the window and look outside.

Also, choose a seat over the wings where there is the least motion. Direct the air vent at your face.

On a train, take a seat near the front and next to a window. Face forward.

Minimize head movement.

Neighbor Watch This winter we need to be part of a community wide neighbor watch.

Nothing formal, just thinking about the people who live in front, behind, to the left and the right of us. Are they warm? Are they fed? It might take a bit of courage on our part to knock on the door and ask straight out if someone is warm, and it might take a large dose of humility for that person to say – “no, I am cold, and I have no heat, I could use some help.”

If you are susceptible to motion sickness, this below-deck scenario is almost guaranteed to make you look for a porthole to get rid of your last meal.

Hot Enough for You? John McDonald

I read an article the other day that said - on average it's warmer at the North Pole than the South Pole. Why is it ‘warmer’ at one pole than the other? Most people assume they're both pretty cold and don't think about it again.

Scientific types think about things like that and don't give it up until they've discovered a good reaon for it.

I’ll explain why one pole is colder than the other in a minute but first I have to explain that I was already to write a ‘cold weather’ column this morning but was temporarily discouraged when I sat down and booted up to begin writing and heard the chirpy guy on the radio beside me saying the temperature outside was an unseasonably warm 42 degrees, which hardly qualifies

as ‘cold weather’ in Maine in December.

Let’s just hope it’s a lot colder outside where you are when you get around to reading this, so you can get into the spirit of the what I wanted to say.

Around this time of year we here in Maine have every right to expect our fair share of cold weather, which includes temperatures in the 20s and overnight temperatures dipping near zero - just for good measure. We can also explain a blizzard or two thrown into the mix, with a dash of sleet and freezing rain, just so we wont forget where we are.

In a month or two the national news and weather people will keep an eye on places like Caribou, so they can make the rest of the country feel almost cozy by reporting: "… and the temperature in Caribou, Maine this morning is a cool 27 degrees below zero."

The national folks also like to report on places like International Falls, Minnesota and Gangrene, North Dakota.

They’ll never tell you what

the temperature is a few miles down the road in a place like Presque Isle or over to Fort Fairfield because a name like Caribou sounds so much colder than those other names.

French names never sound cold.

Although it hasn’t happened yet, I expect in a month

or two, to have a neighbor ask the obligatory, " Cold enough for you?"

How do you answer a numb question like that? What can you say? Are they doing this just for ME? If you have friends who have fled Maine to join the hot, sweaty masses of malcontent-

ed northerners in Florida you can expect to hear from them anytime soon.

They always say they only called to ask how you are, but you know they wouldn’t waste time calling to inquire about your health. In fact, they called to make you feel bad by complaining to you that the temperature at their overcrowded trailer park is a cool 81 degrees but it’s sunny and they expect to go to the beach later. You end the call by yelling a clever Down East-typequip, while slamming down the phone.

That’s when it pays to know your facts about the earth’s poles. You can mention that Florida is nearer the South Pole, which is always colder than the North Pole And even though it’s summer at the South Pole, the temperature never gets above zero and summer storms can bring gusty 200 mph winds. Some say those winds might eventually reach Florida ans West Palm may replace Caribou with the weather guys. .Oh, and the reason the North Pole – the one we’re

nearest to - is so much warmer than the South Pole is because the North Pole has thinner ice that floats on the balmy waters of the Arctic Ocean.

The South Pole consists of mile-thick ice that sits on a very large, cold, granite mountain.

Just knowing that makes me feel better about winter in Maine. Even when the bubbly national weather guy tells me what the temperature is up the road a piece in Caribou.

Sand or non-clumping kitty litter is good to have on hand to help make walkways or steps less slippery. Losing Wounded Deer

V. Paul Reynolds There are remedial measures that can markedly reduce the number of unrecovered deer wounded

by Maine hunters.There is a learning curve.

Most deer hunters will sooner or later in their hunting careers wound a deer and not recover it. It happens. The causes differ. A rushed shot. Buck fever. A gun with an inadequate caliber. A bullet’s impact or trajectory compromised by a tree limb.

Often, particularly with inexperienced hunters, shots at a deer are taken that should not have been.

This is called the unethical shot. Losing a wounded deer is not a good feeling either, as the hunter is haunted by the realization that his mistake has left an animal crippled or to suffer a slow death.

Wildlife biologist and outdoor writer Mark McCollough wrote about this issue in his monthly colusm, from page 19

For wildlife biologists, its important to know just how many animals are wounded and lost during the hunting season. This is factored into annual calculations for harvest quotas. The higher the wounding and loss rate, the fewer the antlerless deer permits issued for you and me.

McCollough’s column was well-researched and his statistics raise some thoughtful questions. As a deer hunter, what do you think? Is Maine’s index of a 15 percent wounded deer loss high or low? The national data seems to suggest that Maine hunters wound a higher percentage of deer than its current formula indicates.

Noteworthy, too, is that bow hunters - if we are to believe the national averages - lose twice as many wounded deer as gun hunters.

There are remedial measures that can markedly reduce the number of unrecovered deer wounded by Maine hunters.There is a learning curve. It is astonishing how many hunters assume that they missed a deer when it bounds away after the shot. In Colorado a few falls ago, I watched a bull elk sneak away from two young men who

had fired at it on a logging road not far from where I had been sitting on a game trail. The elk had apparently not been hit, but there was no way the two hunters could have known.

Astonishingly neither of them stepped off the logging road to check the easily discernible tracks for blood or telltale hair!

The ethic is to assume that the animal IS hit until you are convinced otherwise.

And more hunters need to counsel themselves about avoiding the unethical shot. If you do wound a deer and lose the blood trail, all is not lost. In Maine, now, it is legal to hire a licensed dog handler to find your deer using a trained scent dog.

One of Maine’s licensed trackers is Suzanne Hamilton of Montville. She and her Dacshund “Buster” have a remarkably successful record when it comes to helping deer hunters find their wounded deer. At last count, she and her tracking dog had located a dozen wounded deer this fall for hunters.

A very savvy and determined tracker, Suzanne willingly travels throughout the state on short notice to fulfill her mission.

She does not charge for her tracking services, but

will accept donations to cover gas and expenses.

Of course, as hunters, our ethical obligation is to avoid wounding a deer in the first place. The difference between a clean, ethical kill and wounded unrecovered deer often boils down to a simple case of shooting proficiency. Too many of us wait until the day before the hunt to practice our marksmanship or to sight in that scope.

The bottom line is that, as hunters, we can all do better and must. We owe it to the remarkable animal we hunt, and to the heritage on which we place so much value.

Management Team Announced

St. Dom’s Academy Celebrates St. Nicholas Day

The Board of Directors of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services announces its new management team. Marty McIntyre of Auburn will serve as executive director, Stephanie LeBlond of Denmark will serve as REACH coordinator, and Judy Rawlings of Chesterville will serve as SAVES Coordinator.

Ms. McIntyre has served as the executive director of the Sexual Assault Crisis Center (SACC) in Androscoggin County for the past 27 years. In that capacity, she has grown the agency from a 24 hour hotline to a full range of services for people affected by sexual assault, sexual abuse, stalking and sexual harassment. In her capacity as Executive Director of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services, McIntyre will be responsible for overall management and support for the services provided throughout Oxford, Franklin and Androscoggin counties, and will continue her role

as staff support and supervision in Androscoggin County. She will also participate in Androscoggin County initiatives as well as helping to further develop partnerships in all three counties.

Judy Rawlings served as the Executive Director of Sexual Assault Victims Emergency Services (SAVES) in Franklin County. In her new role, Ms. Rawlings will provide staff support and supervision for Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services’ Franklin County staff and will continue to represent the agency and participate in local initiatives throughout the county. Rawlings will also assume responsibility for planning and support of the prevention education programs in Oxford, Franklin and Androscoggin Counties.

Stephanie LeBlond served as the executive director of Rape Education and Crisis Hotline (REACH) in Oxford County. In her new role, Ms. LeBlond will provide

staff support and supervision for Oxford County staff, and will represent Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services at local county initiatives.

LeBlond will also assume responsibility for planning and support of the client services programs in Oxford, Franklin and Androscoggin Counties.

Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services is a result of a merger between SACC, REACH and SAVES and provides services throughout Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties. The mission of the agency is to provide support and assistance to people affected by sexual assault, childhood sexual abuse, stalking and sexual harassment, and to educate the community about these issues and how they may be prevented.

The students at Saint Dominic Academy, Lewiston campus, celebrated Saint Nicholas Day on December 6th. Mary and Joseph were portrayed by Danielle Faucher and Steve Grenier. They visited the classrooms and sang to the children about their travels to Bethlehem at

census time. Mary and Joseph asked the children for a place to stay, to which the children sang that “There’s No More Room” and that “The Inn is Full.” This La Possada custom comes from a tradition in Mexico. The children followed the visit by preparing personal inten-

tions about how they will make room in their lives for Jesus as they prepare for the celebration of his birth at Christmas. Those intentions were placed in a basket before the nativity during the Advent Prayer Service at the end of the school day. n

“There’s a much better chance of getting a job after graduation, especially with the economy the way it is,” he believes.

Bill has Grade Point Average of 3.7 and a class rank 7th as well as his leadership skills

[Team Captain} learned on the gridiron. His choices of possible vocations, engineering or medical care were also based on the practical. The medical interest stemmed from a near tragic incident his family had with a capsized boat while deep-sea fishing.

Although Bill is planning on playing baseball in the spring, his main focus will be readying himself to continue his football in college, and look ahead to what he will do after football playing is over. n

Bill jokes that he’s partially responsible for the new school’s mascot, the Phoenix. He chose it because the mythological bird is a creature that perpetually rises anew and strong from its ashes every time it’s knocked down.

The natural beauty and wealth of outdoor treasures of Maine’s Rangeley Lakes Region long have lured visitors.

Abnaki Indians set up hunting and fishing camps alongside the area’s 111 lakes and ponds. They were followed by well-to-do “flatlanders” (anyone from south of New Hampshire) who, around the time of the Civil War, were drawn to the Region by the same outdoor activities that had attracted the Abnakis.

Today, the Rangeley Lakes Region continues to draw vacationers seeking a year-round playground.

Its setting, recreational opportunities, and other attributes also have gained wider recognition. Rand McNally included the area -- along with major cities, popular national parks, and other much larger, betterknown destinations -- on its list of “best vacation places in America.”

The tiny town of Rangeley, with 1,200 permanent residents, is perched at the center of this enticing vacation region. The little village captures the quaint nostalgia of a Norman Rockwell painting.

Main Street is lined by single-story frame build-

ings that house shops, a handful of restaurants, and a small movie theater. No stop lights interrupt the sparse flow of traffic, much of it cars with a canoe on top and huge trucks groaning beneath loads of freshcut logs. Nearby Oquossoc (Indian for “landing place”) is even smaller.

Perched between Rangeley and Mooselookmeguntic Lakes, it is home to three restaurants, a small grocery store, a fishing and sports shop, a marina, post office, and folks who really like the quiet.

This picture-postcard scene varies little throughout the year. Yet each season in the Rangeley Lakes Region offers its own choice of activities for which the landscape and lakes provide a perfect setting.

Those who prefer water to dry land take to the Rangeley chain of lakes in canoes, sail and power boats, and old-fashioned Rangeley boats -- unique wooden crafts that were built specifically for local lake travel. In recent years, windsurf sails have joined in, taking advantage of breezes that blow down onto the lake waters from the surrounding mountains.

Small game flourishes in fields and forests. Ruffed grouse are among game birds that take flight at the sound of an approaching footstep.

Those interested in close encounters with wildlife also have plenty of oppor-

tunities. Early morning canoeists on the Kennebago River look for deer, osprey, beaver, otter, mink, and the gigantic moose. Another good bet for meeting moose is during a dawn or dusk drive out of town on Route 16.

Winter in Rangeley is synonymous with some of the best snowmobiling anywhere. A 150-mile network of clearly marked, wellgroomed trails interconnects with other systems that lead throughout Maine and into Canada. A seasonlong calendar of races, festivals, and other special events attracts snowmobile enthusiasts from near and far. For up-to-date conditions December through

Skiing is also first rate.

Saddleback remains the last uncrowded big mountain ski experience in New England. The 4,116-foot high peak boasts 66 Alpine trails and glades, and plenty of lift capacity. Top-to-bottom snowmaking augments over 200 inches of annual snowfall to keep slopes open and active from November into April. No matter what time of year they choose to enjoy the Rangeley Lakes Region, visitors also may choose from a something-

They include comfortable country inns, intimate bed and breakfasts, convenient motels, private home rentals, sporting complexes, camping areas and rustic housekeeping cottages that, in this part of the world, are called “camps.”

In its rating of outstanding destinations, Rand McNally described the Rangeley Lakes Region as “one of America’s few remaining vacation spots where one can truly escape most of the disadvantages of civilization.” Who’s to argue with such a respected source?

Holiday Trees for Veterans

Santa (Sean Brogan) and Mrs. Claus (Magan Blais) were spotted on Church Hill road on Saturday Dec. 3rd. They turned onto Anson Road where they made a stop at Care-A-Lot Childcare owned by Denise Michaud. The children were able to take pictures on the tractor with Santa if they wanted and then gifts were passed out. Fun was had by all.

Local Scouts, Tri-County Mental Health Services, and Americorps Vista teamed up to honor veterans this holiday season with Trees of Honor at the Lewiston and Auburn Malls. Everyone was invited to stop by and write the name of a Veteran they wanted to honor on an ornament for the tree. The message the partners wished to send to Veterans is simply… “We are thinking about and honor you.”

Superintendent Reads

Turner Primary School teacher Janet Ouellette asked the Superintendent, Dr. Henry Aliberti to read a Christmas story to her Kindergarten class. What Aliberti did not know was that the story was one he had written when he was Ouellette's principal at Leeds Elementary School back in the mid 1980s. The new RSU 52 Superintendent was quite surprised and did not recognize his story The Angel with One Wing at first. He was also presented with a paper, one-winged angel as a gift from the class.
