An innovative integration Centacare Brisbane provides social and care services to over 150,000 people each year. With the support of HACC government funding, Centacare has recently implemented an innovative assistive technology program integrating the latest in Tunstall telehealthcare solutions. Centacare Brisbane, the social services arm of the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Brisbane, works in partnership with various levels of government and the community to help improve the lives of over 150,000 people each year. With a workforce of more than 3000, including volunteers, they respond to local community care needs from over 200 small service sites throughout Southeast Queensland.

Healthcare has supported the project by providing a range of telehealthcare products, including GSM personal medical alarms with medication reminder prompts and staff check-in alerts for safety, ivi intelligent pendants with fall detection capabilities, and activity sensors.

Since 2007, Tunstall Healthcare has supported Centacare in integrating various telecare solutions within client homes and respite residences, building a strong care relationship over the years.

The project has also involved a unique social inclusion program—Samsung tablets complete with appropriate applications such as social networking sites, shopping and online banking. Provided to assist the client in managing mainstream technology independently, the tablets also support client connections with family and friends through standard video conferencing applications.

Centacare’s services are largely made possible with the help of government funding, including the Commonwealth Home and Community Care (HACC) Program, which provides funding for services to support older people to remain independent at home.

Additionally, the Samsung tablets assist Centacare staff to manage resident medication compliance. Centacare staff can now remotely manage clients through Tunstall’s secure icp video conferencing platform, helping to coach the client and ensure medication is taken as prescribed.

With HACC funding support, Centacare has recently implemented an innovative program integrating the latest in assistive technology solutions. Tunstall

Tunstall has also provided ongoing support including information sessions, workshops and training sessions for Centacare staff.

“It’s an exciting time ahead; there is a bright future for industry, community and healthcare sectors to create a world where remoteness is not a barrier to quality healthcare. “I look forward to contribute both industry experience and an international perspective, and help ensure board initiatives are

focused on access for patients to smart medical technology and improving quality of life. “I’m passionate about bringing this perspective and focus to the discussions at the boardroom table,” she said. MTAA Chief Executive Susi Tegen said it was fantastic to have a diverse group of directors on the board, representing points of view from different company types, sizes, geographic regions and genders. “Remote monitoring and telehealth are part of an important solution to meeting the growing needs of the population,” said Ms Tegen.

NURSE RUTH

Tunstall telehealth receives APNA training accreditation Tunstall Healthcare has recently received confirmation of endorsement by the Australian Practice Nurses Association (APNA) for our new icp telehealth training program. Last month we received confirmation that our new icp telehealth training program has been officially endorsed by the Australian Practice Nurses Association (APNA). This is an exciting success, as the accreditation is a recognised validation of our training programs’ quality offering. The accreditation means that nurses may now claim up to 25 CPD hours on successful completion of our Tunstall icp telehealth training package. Telehealth, or patient remote monitoring services, are now offering a new model of healthcare delivery and we are very pleased that our innovative training modules have been recognised for their contribution to quality nurse education. Our comprehensive icp telehealth training packages educate participants on the working processes and required etiquette of telehealth services. Our complete training package consists of seven modules which teach participants how to coach and assist patients with equipment use and

assimilation to regular vital sign interviews, familiarise them with patient triage software and management, and prepare them on scheduling and conducting patient follow-up appointments via video conference. For further information on Tunstall Healthcare’s telehealth solutions and nationally accredited APNA training packages call 1800 611 528. Tunstall will also be showcasing our flagship icp solution at Connect 2014. The exhibition will also include an exclusive preview of the new patient-friendly module mylife; set to provide patients, their family members and carers with greater access to health results and additional resources, including educational and condition management tools. - Nurse Ruth

New to Tunstall’s telehealth integrated care platform (icp), the mylife module provides patients, their family members and carers with access to recorded vital sign readings and trend data. Accessible via a secure web portal, patient readings appear real-time, trending against pre-set clinical parameters to provide instant feedback on patient progress. Users can see when future patient health interviews are scheduled, and view an individual patient-friendly care plan. Links to relevant education materials and websites are also available to the user, supporting further education and ownership of their own health condition. mylife is an optional module available as part of icp solution.

ask Warren Warren, our Telehealthcare Consultant, is one of Tunstall’s longest serving employees, sharing his years of Tunstall wisdom by providing training and support for our customers and installers. <Q.> What is the most useful feature of the new ConnectMe alarm?

ce Warren Du ltant o C care nsu Telehealth re ca alth Tunstall He

<A.> The new ConnectMe alarm has an improved reminder facility that can be set to automatically remind the client about key information, such as medication times. This feature allows the carer to pre-record a message for the client, which can be up to 60 seconds long.

In one case, we used the reminder feature to set up six re-occuring 10 second messages for our client George, who was forgetting to drink water throughout the day. His carer recorded a message that said “George, it’s time to have a glass of water”. Each day the alarm plays the message at the pre-set times, and George must get-up and press the button on the alarm to acknowledge the reminder. This has worked very effectively for George, and his hydration levels are no longer a concern for his carer.

Industry corner NZ

- Stephen Murray; General Manager New Zealand & Asia Pacific Business Development Manager

Changing the delivery of healthcare in New Zealand Rising costs to the provision of traditional healthcare models are set to create a significant problem for the current system of healthcare delivery in New Zealand. As the focus of health delivery shifts from traditional hospitals and clinics to home and community models, governments are turning to new technologies such as telehealth for maintaining in home care.

Keep up with the latest industry news. Follow Tunstall on Twitter: @tunstallhcare

Clinical benefits and cost savings have the potential to be realised by telehealth. Many organisations and governments around the world are recognising that care needs can be met in the community with the establishment of telehealth services, enabling patients access to clinical support services in the home. Telephone coaching, medical alarms, telemedicine and video conferencing are not new concepts; these types of services have been around for years, delivering and enabling varying types of care and support. However, telehealth (patient remote monitoring) goes further into the care plan, enabling a ‘care pathway’ and a continuum of care for short and long term needs. 8

An uptake of telehealth would enable New Zealand’s healthcare system to reach more people in a cost effective way. Ideal for people living with chronic health conditions, telehealth collects the patients’ vital sign and interview information for review on a regular/daily basis. New Zealanders deserve to age well and in a place of their choice. Many international telehealth programs are producing improvements and efficiencies in quality of care, hospital avoidance, reducing travel, increasing case load management, productivity and reducing cost. However, the benefits of telehealth for New Zealand needs to be trialed and tested within country, for New Zealanders. Tunstall stands ready to support the New Zealand public and private sectors to evaluate the benefits of telehealth as an alternative model of care in the delivery of health services. - Stephen Murray General Manager New Zealand & Asia Pacific Business Development Manager
