LETTER FROM PRESIDENT OF THE GERMAN AMERICAN SOCIETY OF TULSA (GAST) Wie geht’s (How are you)?
Robert Karl Rothenbücher
Welcome to Linde Oktoberfest Tulsa! We’ve been celebrating Oktoberfest here in Tulsa for 41 years, but the original Oktoberfest began 209 years ago on October 12, 1810, with the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. Today, Oktoberfest is the world’s largest Volksfest beer festival and traveling fun fair!
Did you know that approximately 16% of the American population has German ancestry? It’s true! The German American Society of Tulsa (G.A.S.T.) works to promote and preserve the German language and culture through edu-cational and social activities and events for the enrichment of our members and the community. Whether you’re of German descent or not, you’re encouraged to join us! The only requirement is loving German language and culture. Membership information is available at www.gastulsa.org. Make sure you stop by our tent for bratwurst with sauerkraut and mustard (specially imported from Germany for this great event), and homemade potato pancakes with applesauce! Enjoy this year’s Linde Oktoberfest Tulsa and have a guten Zeit (good time)!
Robert Karl Rothenbücher President of the German-American Society of Tulsa 4
celebrating 41 years
The year was 1979, and the very first Oktoberfest was born of humble beginnings on the east bank of the Arkansas River in Tulsa. The brain child of Vivian Steele, then the public affairs administrator for the River Parks Authority, the first Oktoberfest was sponsored by KJRH, the Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa, The Tulsa Tribune, KBEZ Radio and the River Parks Authority. While it may be hard to imagine when thinking of what Tulsa’s Oktoberfest looks like now, just a few small tents, Master of Ceremonies Josef Hardt, producer-director at KJRH, and support from the German-American Club of Oklahoma City were all it took to get the first Oktoberfest underway. The success of that first festival, which saw approximately 50,000 attendees, encouraged organizers to set aside seed money for the following year. During the second year of the festival that number almost doubled. Oktoberfest patrons consumed 3,500 pounds of knackwurst, bratwurst and sauerkraut. Although hamburgers, hotdogs and corn dogs also available, it was apparent the crowd craved German food and wanted an authentic German experience. With the monumental growth of the first two years, Oktoberfest moved to the west bank of the Arkansas River in 1981. For many people, festival volunteers in particular, it was an unforgettable occasion. Relentless rains led to discussions about cancelling the festival, which soon became known as “Mudfest.” Not only did the festival go on as scheduled, it lasted for two weekends and became the stuff of legend when the Chicken Dance was introduced. Years later, volunteers and attendees from the Mudfest days will tell you it’s the most fun they’ve ever had! The festival’s fourth year might as well have been called the “Dustbowl,” as water wagons were utilized to control the dust. For 1982, Oktoberfest was once again located on what is now a portion of the Waterside Apartments complex property. The Burlington Northern Railway provided train rides from the festival location to Jenks America. The crowd 6
oktoberfest in tulsa
reached an estimated 250,000 and ate five miles of sausages in addition to mountains of kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes) sauerkraut and pickles. Oktoberfest was on the move again in 1983, as construction at its previous location necessitated a move to just south of 21st Street in the Old West Park. At the new location, many of the tents were located over existing parking lots and there was no dust or mud to contend with. By this point in time, the festival was established and people found the festival with little regard to its changed location! Completion of the existing festival site in 1985, and its upgrade and renovation in 2015, provided Oktoberfest with a permanent home, more space and the necessary infrastructure to allow a growing and maturing festival to better accommodate and serve the ever-growing crowds. Each year brings different bands from Germany, variations in German and European foods, arts and crafts and fun activities for the children. Significantly, Oktoberfest donates a sizeable portion of its revenues to the River Parks Authority for continuing improvements to the festival site and park system and is one of the major fundraisers for the organization. gemütlichkeit (corporate night)
One of the Tulsa’s most anticipated events of the fall is Linde Oktoberfest’s signature fundraiser, Gemütlichkeit (ge mōōtlik kīt). Gemütlichkeit was introduced decades ago to recognize and thank supporting media and festival sponsors who were often unable to enjoy the festival as patrons. Gemütlichkeit quickly became a corporate networking event like no other, with patrons reserving tables, Munich-style, to share community and good will over traditional German food and drink. The evening is often referred to simply as “Corporate Night.” Gemütlichkeit is the main fundraiser for Tulsa Oktoberfest, Inc., a 501(c)(3) not-for- profit organization whose mission is to produce an authentic celebration of German folk heritage that will enhance Tulsa and its River Parks. Since the inception of Tulsa’s Oktoberfest in 1979, the festival has benefited River Parks Authority, a Public Trust and 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.

Linde represents over 140 years of technology and innovation. In 1870, Linde tested refrigeration prototypes in the Spaten Brewery in Munich and in 1877 delivered the very first refrigeration systems to the Dreher brewery. It is our innovative spirit that has taken the organization from refrigeration pioneer to being the largest gases and engineering company in the world. The Tulsa office and fabrication shop at the Port of Catoosa engineer and build plants for gas processing, refining, LNG and deep cryogenics — here in Tulsa and worldwide.
