Supporting children from disadvantaged backgrounds It’s a special moment when you first travel on the gondola and take in the panoramic view across the snow-covered mountains. Despite possibly having skied many destinations over the years, it’s likely you can even remember the name of the resort. It is such a moment that Katie’s Ski Tracks works to provide to children from a variety of backgrounds.

How does Katie’s Ski Tracks operate? Katie’s Ski Tracks is a small voluntary organisation with a very big heart. The charity works to provide children with varying disabilities or terminal illness with an opportunity to experience a skiing holiday.

What elements need to be considered for Katie’s Ski Tracks to support children on a ski trip? The money not only funds travel and accommodation in resort, but all the necessary specialised equipment and instruction needed to support each child and their specific needs. Volunteers required for the trip include doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, ski guides, instructors and entertainment officers who all play a crucial role in ensuring the ski trip in a safe, enjoyable and memorable experience for all.

How has SkiBound supported Katie’s Ski Tracks? Over the course of the 7 years SkiBound has been supporting the Katie’s Ski Tracks charity, £33,137.45 has been raised to provide 22 children with a trip of a lifetime to the snowy slopes. This money has been raised through a series of initiatives, including company donations, charity evenings, Clubhotel fundraising activities and the all-important donations from schools.

What can schools do to support Katie’s Ski Tracks? There are a number of ways schools can continue to show their support for Katie’s Ski Tracks and make the impossible possible. Whether you would like your school to lead an event, gather donations, or spread word of the charity to parents and guardians, every effort to nurture the growth of the charity is a huge step to making a difference to children from a variety of disadvantaged backgrounds through a unique ski experience.

At SkiBound, we believe we have selected the best ski resorts and accommodation our chosen destinations have to offer. Along with our dedicated service, we believe in being able to piece together the perfect package for you. So when we talk about a ski resort’s suitability for your group, we want to provide you with an opportunity to see it for yourselves.

One option is to take a bespoke weekend Inspection Visit, allowing party leaders to carry out those all-important health and safety checks and inspect all aspects of the resort. These are generally organised in low season and Party Leaders arrange their own flights. SkiBound then provides the ground package to include car hire, 2 nights of half board accommodation, 1 day ski hire and a 1 day ski pass. A second person can travel at a supplement. Alternatively, a SkiBound group Inspection Visit offers teachers the chance to get out there and clip on their skis in different resorts on a tour of a particular region with other Party Leaders. Whether you’ve been running the trip for many or it’s your first time, we want to show you how it all works. The group will take part in a ‘ski safari’ style tour allowing Party Leaders to sample up to five different ski areas and check out hotels, activities and local amenities for their suitability to your group. There are a huge number of benefits that stem from joining a SkiBound Inspection Visit. For those travelling to the resort for the first time, the chance to ski and learn the layout of the resort is invaluable. It can raise your confidence for the trip and provide practical knowledge. In the case of an emergency, the experience will allow you to identify how long it takes to navigate the mountain, as well as knowing the location of the medical centre. The Inspection Visit is also a unique opportunity to network with other teachers. Both experienced and first time Party Leaders can liaise to discuss their experiences on the slopes and what has worked for their students. There will also be an opportunity to experience the après-ski options in resort. With the price of the Inspection Visit fully refunded against the final balance of your tour, Party Leaders benefit from an experience that allows you to enjoy time on the slopes with fellow teachers without breaking the bank. Contact your Regional Account Manager to book your place on the next Inspection Visit.

our experienced team

expert advice

SkiBound has been operating for over 30 years, and it’s the experience of our knowledgeable staff that sets us apart from the rest.

We pride ourselves on having the most experienced sales team within the school ski industry. Our enthusiastic, knowledgeable and passionate staff will support you throughout the entire booking process. Either faceto-face with our Regional Account Managers or over the phone with our expert office-based team, we will listen to your requests and recommend a resort that best suits your needs, budget and ski tour requirements. The majority of our sales team members have been with us for many years and have visited the majority of our featured resorts, enabling them to pass on insightful, first-hand information about your preferred destination.

The majority of our management team have been involved in the school skiing industry for longer than they like to admit, building exceptional relationships with Party Leaders, resort staff and suppliers. Our extensive experience enables us to work in partnership with you to provide the perfect ski trip that you and your students deserve.

dedicated tour coordinators Once you have confirmed your booking with us, you will be assigned a dedicated tour coordinator who will handle all the pre-tour administration of your school ski trip. Your personal tour coordinator will be your main point of contact and is on hand to discuss any queries regarding the finer details of your trip; such as flights, coaches, rooming, ski lessons, evening entertainment options. They will be able to provide your group with all the ‘added extras’ that will make your school ski trip that extra bit special – from tour hoodies, to pre booking evening entertainment packages. Detail is key and the role of your tour coordinator is to ensure that everything is addressed before you depart the UK, ensuring that you have a stress-free experience whilst in resort.

operations team Our Operations Team members boast extensive experience, local knowledge and excellent contacts, as well as a thorough understanding of what school groups want from their ski trip. With permanent offices in the French Alps and in the heart of the Austrian Alps, as well as a strong presence in each of our other territories throughout the year, the team’s focus is to ensure that we are working with carefully selected airlines, coach companies and overseas suppliers in the best ski resorts. In addition to the intensive planning and preparation ahead of your tour, the Operations Team will ensure that we have professional, dedicated and fun resort staff on hand to support your group throughout the duration of the trip.

resort team We follow a rigorous recruitment process to ensure that we provide the best possible in-resort team. We look for enthusiastic, passionate people who can deliver outstanding customer service. Once selected, all of our reps undergo the relevant background checks and take part in a thorough training course which includes Child Protection and Health & Safety. We have an extensive list of experienced reps who continue to work with us year after year – often requested by our groups following excellent performances from previous years. In the event of unlikely and unexpected incidents, our reps are fully supported by our Resort Area Managers, local offices and our UK office.

SkiBound’s Safety Management System (SMS) has been built to provide Party Leaders with peace of mind. Covering policy, organisation, planning and setting standards, monitoring, audits, and reviews, the SMS is fully compliant with the requirements of the School Travel Forum (STF) and reinforced by an annual assessment carried out by an STF-appointed independent authority. While we as a ski tour operator work to go the extra mile to support the safety of your school ski group, there are a number of tips aimed at Party Leaders to support safety on the slopes.

Knowing your way around the piste Some Party Leaders choose walkie-talkies over mobile phones, but either way it is important to know your surroundings and be able to read a piste map. Knowing how long it will take to get from one side of the mountain to the other and understanding how you’re going to get there is important should you get a call to attend one of your groups.

Strategies to identify your students on the slopes Trip hoodies are a fantastic memento for students to enjoy and are a great way to identify students during evening après-ski activities. However, with ski jackets a necessity this option doesn’t quite serve the same purpose on the slopes. Some Party Leaders choose to be creative with their solutions while others may buy something pre-designed to support the need to identify students on the slopes. How about helmet covers in bright colours? It’s a great way to identify your groups from afar without compromising on safety. You could also fashion coloured arm bands by cutting up leg warmers. Either way, grouping your students with the same colour can help you identify who’s who on the slopes without the need for too much head counting!

Risk assessments and communicating the message to staff Along with the Safety Management System (SMS), SkiBound provides Party Leaders with resources to support risk assessments. As a recognised member of the School Travel Forum (STF), Party Leaders can also benefit from accessing a ‘Demystifying Risk Assessment’ guide that supports staff in employing effective group safety management whilst away. It is important any potential hazards or risks are communicated appropriately to the supporting staff to ensure all are informed prior to departing.

The importance of loco parentis Staff on your school trip will be acting in loco parentis. It is therefore important to set some ground rules for the students prior to departing on the ski trip. It is also a positive step to include parents in this so they are aware of the pre-determined boundaries you, as Party Leader, have set out. Highlighting this during your pre-trip meeting ensures information about “souvenir” money and ground rules for the accommodation do not end up in being manipulated through Chinese whispers.

Working with your ski representative Your ski representative is your eyes and ears on the ground who will look to support your group however best they can. With your best interests in mind, they are an extra pair of hands who can not only inject energy into your group but provide support staff with the ins and outs of the resort and logistics. Work with your ski representative to find the best solutions and your school ski trip can be an even smoother experience.

The benefits of a school ski trip are far-reaching with students, staff, and the school reaping the rewards. Ski trips prove highly positive in the pursuit of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and career progression for teachers and highlight the commitment by schools to extra-curricular and personal development activities for students. On top of all this, the benefits for students are arguably even more rewarding. Here we have identified 7 benefits your students can enjoy by experiencing a school ski trip.

1. Student independence

5. Going abroad

Close ties to peers are formed on school ski trips with students coming together as they adjust to a new environment. While they remain under the instruction of the Party Leaders and support staff, students inevitably come out of their shells as they are given more freedom around the resort. This has a knock-on effect which sees improved confidence and students become less dependent on mother/father figures when away from home.

It is likely that by the time a student joins the school ski trip they will have already spent a night away from home. Whether it is a sleepover at a friend’s house or an activity residential trip, spending time away from parents may not be an issue. However, there is a chance the school ski trip will provide students with their first experience abroad away from parents or first trip abroad full stop. Interacting with a new environment, trying to use their language skills to buy a crepe or milkshake, and ensuring they are behaving appropriately when the Party Leader is not around are all aspects of a school ski trip abroad students will be faced with. Taking on a new level of responsibility, students will naturally grow and face up to the adventure of joining their peers on an experience abroad.

2. Social skills on the slopes For many students, the school ski trip will be the first time on snow let alone clipping into skis. The unique experience therefore allows peers to bond through laughter and learning. Whether it is a beginner, intermediate, or advanced group, the common platform based on ability translates to a level playing field students can use to support each other and see progress during the week. By communicating through a combination of physical (skiing) and après activities, students are developing their interpersonal skills and ability to handle new situations.

3. Identifying strengths and limitations Whether it is the students’ first or third ski trip, there is a learning experience on the slopes that allows for self-assessment. Day to day students are not only developing their ability on skis but their ability to monitor their progress across the week. Whether it’s through selfdetermination or a wish to improve quicker than their peers, students will be able to start identifying what they are capable of achieving. While there is an element of confidence to believe you can achieve, students will soon be able to realise their boundaries and where they can adjust to improve their technique on the slopes.

4. Embracing the outdoors All too often we hear of students being more fixated on console and computer screens than enjoying the great outdoors. The school ski trip provides a release and an alternative to the digital world. Standing on the piste and looking across the mountain grants students the chance to enjoy something they may not otherwise experience away from school and the home environment. The outdoors and mountain environment also supports students in decision making and understanding risk. Making judgements on their movements and actions on the piste and identifying the potential outcomes can help students embrace mountain etiquette and adjust behaviour.

6. Experiencing skiing Skiing is a sport, a challenge, and bundles of fun. For the first time skier, there may be an element of trepidation heading into the first few lessons. Skiing involves certain movements that many struggle to get their head around at first; shifting their weight in the opposite direction to where their instincts dictate. Whether students are beginners or wishing to choose skiing as their assessed activity in their PE GCSE, the sport and experience provides a wealth of outcomes for the learner. The thrill of clipping into your skis, successfully disembarking from the chairlift and meandering your way down the slope with your newly perfected parallel turns leads to an unbeatable sense of achievement. The mountain could be a completely unfamiliar environment and the student may not be one for choosing sport over other activities, but the physical experience of skiing sits on its own level away from the football pitch or tennis court with its own style and unique culture.

7. Raising aspirations Where access to the sport may seem limited in the eyes of some, by leading a school ski trip students are provided with an opportunity they may have never previously considered. It opens the students’ world up to possibilities. This isn’t limited to aspirations to try new sports and develop new skills, but also to travel and explore new countries and cultures. The school ski trip therefore sits in the category of “making the best of both worlds” where the experience of being abroad meets developing skills in the sport of skiing. There are a multitude of benefits which can be encompassed in the pursuit of lifelong learning.

Let the battle commence as the age-old debate of coach vs air travel seems destined to be unresolved. However, with benefits on both sides of the argument we felt it was only right to highlight them here as Party Leaders decide which option best suits their school and students.

Sit back and relax

Quicker than a coach

Get from A to B with the comfort of a coach. Drive to your European destination and you’ll cut out the logistics of ensuring your students get through security and remain together prior to your flight departing.

Have you thought about strategies to keep your students occupied on a coach for 13 hours? Take a flight and your students will soon be in resort getting their bearings of where the nearest healthy snack (confectionary) shop is located.

Benefit from a coach in resort Does your ski resort feature all of your evening entertainment activities? If you’re looking to show up your students on the ten pin lanes in the neighbouring town, you may need transport to get you there and back. Plump for these activities mid-week and you’ll have plenty of drivers’ hours left.

cost effective in high season It’s no secret travelling within the period of huge demand during the school holidays leads to larger sums of money being handed over. We’ve worked hard to keep the cost of your coach travel competitive during these busy weeks of the season, and if you’re tied to these weeks, travelling by coach is always the more cost effective option. If your numbers allow, cut the cost even further by coach sharing with another group.

Provides schools with a greater range of options Let’s be honest…if North America is your chosen destination, then a coach quite simply isn’t going to cut it. Broaden your options for your school ski trip by taking advantage of the vast choice of resorts on the East and West Coasts of the USA and Canada, including one or two night stopovers to some of North America’s most notable cities.

Great savings during term time If you have the option of travelling during term time, you can typically pick up fantastic savings by travelling via air, especially to our French Clubhotels. With skiing forming part of the GCSE for Physical Education, schools are provided with a valuable opportunity to assess students on their skills and techniques through progressive drills on the slopes.

Early flights are something many experience and few relish. It is the compromise of cutting into your beauty sleep and making the most of your time away. However, once you have landed at your destination and made the transfer to resort, there is a huge temptation to relax for a moment with a hot chocolate as you take in the views but there’s still the ski hire to sort! Which doesn’t sound so bad unless you have to trek up a hill to reach the local hire shop and find it is closed, that’s when more than just exhaustion sets in! While this may be a situation you are accustomed to when venturing out to the slopes with your best friends, being in this position with 50 school students in tow becomes less of an “oh well” and more of a nightmare. This is before you learn that 30% of your group have left their ski socks back in their room for the ski fit! Our SkiBound Clubhotels eliminate such stress, all of our properties benefit from in-house ski hire and ski fit. Exclusive to SkiBound groups, our in-house service allows the ski fit to be scheduled around your group. If you arrive late, we’ll wait up! We’re keen for your first day on the slopes to start on time the following morning. We see no reason why you should miss out on crucial ski time due to a missed ski hire slot. Each year we typically replace one third of our equipment meaning our kit is rarely over three years old. We believe in only providing the best equipment, which is why we continue to choose Salomon as our suppliers. We also employ and train qualified ski technicians to ensure every student is fitted out with the right kit and best fit.

The all-round school ski trip destination for more than 40 years There are ski resorts that dwindle and fail to live up to expectations, those that invest heavily in technology and pass the cost on to the customer, and then there is Austria. A veteran of the ski world, Austrian resorts continue to draw on their previous successes that brought about the 70s boom, drew in fans of the downhill circuit and saw the first school ski trips being undertaken in the 1960s. Resorts are combining past success with the best aspects of a traditional alpine experience, whilst utilising the best new technology has to offer.

The birth of linked ski resorts A question many school ski Party Leaders may pose could be “what’s changed?” and while we’ll leave the history lesson for the classroom, the answer is that as technology has improved, ski destinations have upped their game by linking resorts and improving lift systems to create kilometres upon kilometres of piste for skiers to choose from. Austria has led the pack in this regard, developing bigger, more technologically advanced super resorts such as the vast Arlberg region - one of the top 5 largest interconnected ski areas in the world with 305km of piste.

How does Austria compete with other ski destinations? Austria represents incredible value for money. From the basic holiday costs and the price of lift passes to the variety of dining options and evening entertainment costs, Austria has raised the stakes. Ski schools have improved with English speaking instructors in a better position to interact and tailor lessons to the students’ ability. To add to this, Austrian ski resorts haven’t skipped out on service. With the influences of German efficiency this was perhaps never in doubt, but the importance of a warm welcome from courteous and helpful staff to help build a positive ski experience for students remains high on the wish list of school ski Party Leaders.

Technology on the slopes

Keeping with tradition: The alpine experience Not stopping at picking the best resorts for schools, there has also been careful consideration over the best accommodation options for students. From gasthofs to jugendhotels, Austrian proprietors have considered how they can intermix the comforts of modern-day necessities - in-house entertainment, en suite facilities or inclusive Wi-Fi - with the rustic nature that automatically springs to mind when imagining that perfect ski trip. In keeping with tradition, many hotel owners have looked to bring this experience inside by providing school ski groups with a comfortable stay that ticks the box for an ‘alpine experience’. Interiors have been carefully considered to suit student groups while not skipping out on features that helps remind schools they are in Austria.

On the slopes of Austria Austria offers amazingly varied ski terrain, from gentle nursery slopes to glacier skiing at over 3000m. Across the newly linked resorts, Austria is still able to offer skiing on a higher level despite some villages being located lower in the valley. Snow-sure resorts, including Obertauern and Sölden, provide school groups with great options late into the ski season. Head to the famous Kitzsteinhorn Glacier from Zell am See and students will be treated to an array of pristine slopes and snowparks offering both variety to the casual skiers and adrenaline seekers. Groups choosing the Austrian Alps for their next school ski trip can be assured of a great trip due to a solid history of good ski resorts, great snow, and high levels of hospitality. The added bonus of getting more for your money in the shape of linked resorts and efficient high-spec lift systems puts the cherry on the top in making Austria unbelievable value for money in the school ski market.

Top ski mileage in Austria: Ziller Valley - 515km Arlberg Region (St Anton) - 305km linked Salzburger Sportwelt - 270km (with access up to a total of 760km in the full Amade region)

As for technology, Austria’s lift systems far surpass those found in other countries. Set aside the trend of Austrian resorts building new partnerships with neighbouring slopes to provide skiers with a greater variety of terrain, the resorts themselves have improved to ensure a smooth transition to the piste. In fact, an independent assessment of ski lift systems rank a selection of SkiBound’s Austrian resorts within the top five. These include the SkiWelt, Saalbach, the Ziller Valley and of course Kitzbühel, home to one of the most modern lift systems in Europe. With over 2,500 ski lifts in Austria, the renewal of these fits into the expansion plans carried out by many resorts over the past few seasons.

Ah the Milky Way, that tasty nougat bar slathered in chocolate… no? Nope. Try that vast ski area often standing in the shadow of the Dolomites in terms of reputation. No longer does the Milky Way need to be second in line to the Superski area and here’s why.

The Milky Way is vast

We’re not going to start making comparisons to the galaxy of the same name, but in terms of skiable terrain the Milky Way’s 400km of piste offers groups plenty to explore during ski school. Stretching across a number of Italian ski resorts, including Sauze d’Oulx, Sestriere, Sansicario, Cesana and Claviere in Italy as well as Montgenevre in France, the Milky Way has a variety of resorts to suit school groups.

A choice of resorts

Claviere is a quaint, typically Italian village and a great choice for beginners with sun-trap nursery slopes and short queuing times on the lifts. One of the main locations for the 2006 Winter Olympics, Sansicario is centrally located on the Milky Way map. The resort offers schools a mixture of slopes and the traffic-free centre and picturesque wooded areas across the mountains makes this modern resort a favourite with school ski groups. Cesana is a particularly good choice for intermediates skiers within your group. Sweeping bowls and unspoilt wooded areas make it an attractive choice as the gateway to the Milky Way. The highest resort in the Milky Way, Sestriere offers confident skiers an array of north-facing slopes, challenging runs and boasts a great snow record. Sauze d’Oulx ticks the right boxes even before you clip into your skis. This traditional resort has long been a favourite for UK schools with wide, cruising slopes and tree-lined runs.

Stunning backdrops

While there are a variety of slopes to suit different abilities, one thing each of the resorts in the Milky Way has in common is the outstanding views and landscapes the area has to offer. Wooded areas with meandering runs plus wide, open bowls not only adds extra excitement to the day’s ski, but is the perfect place to capture that picturesque selfie.

Snow conditions

With variety across the resorts comes plenty of opportunity to benefit from the best snow the Milky Way has to offer. While Sestriere is the area's highest resort, Claviere has built up a reputation for good snow coverage with high, open slopes allowing the ski schools to make the most of the conditions. Even if snow is in short supply (perish the thought!) the region’s 950 snow cannons will put your mind at ease for a great ski day.

Après-ski options

Visit the Milky Way and evening entertainment will be just around the corner. School groups staying in Sauze d’Oulx can capitalise on the resort’s well-known centre for après-ski, including a games hall, pizzerias and karaoke. The Milky Way resort of Montgenèvre, located just across the border in France, provides schools with alternative activities, including snow shoeing. With bowling evenings in Chantemerle plus swimming and ice skating available in Sestriere, the Milky Way has après-ski covered for schools.

Skiing in

the USA

Why travel to the usa Excellent snow records, extensive snowmaking facilities and a dependable ski season The USA is renowned for its fantastic hospitality and ‘service with a smile’ Smaller ski school ratio numbers and no language barrier ensures optimal progression Put the icing on the cake with a memorable stay in NYC, Boston or San Francisco There are no alcohol issues in North America. For some, the USA is considered the holy grail when it comes to ski trips, and it’s not difficult to see why. North America differs to Europe in its ski areas, boasting sweeping bowls, wide open glades and tree-lined runs providing plenty of terrain for beginner and advanced skiers. With both coasts boasting great snow records in recent years and resorts seeing improved snowmaking technology, the USA combines its proud history with a vibrant future for school ski tours. The SkiBound resort options in the east and west coast have different merits and advantages, so let us outline a few of these to make your decision between East or West that little bit easier.

82

Call us on 01273 767677 email info@skibound.co.uk or visit skibound.co.uk

East Coast USA Shorter travel times. East Coast resorts are a (relatively) short hop over the Atlantic and generally flight times are around 7 hours into New York or Boston. From here the hills of the eastern ski resorts are mostly an easy drive - no hairpin bends and narrow mountain roads to endure here! Think convenience and accessibility and you’ve got SkiBound’s East Coast USA resorts. Fantastic progression. Many students may suffer nerves about the ski trip, especially for those new to skiing who may be unsure if the sport is for them. Many eastern resorts have dedicated beginner areas allowing new skiers to progress without more accomplished people whizzing through! Progression slopes are designed to allow beginners to make it right to the top of the mountain during their ski week, see the whole area and ski right back to base, unlike bigger resorts which may see beginners on the same green slopes all week. Twin centres NYC, Boston, Washington DC. When considering a city visit during your trip there are few people who wouldn’t list one of these as their top choice. Whether you choose the Big Apple, historical haven Boston or the captivating history of Washington DC as your choice, all of them tick all the boxes for educational gains, world famous landmarks and those all-important outlet malls.

West Coast USA The Rocky Mountains. Simply put, the Rockies are home to the most epic ski areas in North America. Dramatic mountain peaks, huge ski areas and breath-taking vistas - sometimes across huge lakes - await groups that take on the West Coast USA for a memorable ski experience. High altitude / mileage resorts. Western ski resorts in the US benefit from huge amounts of high altitude terrain due to the sheer enormity of the 3000 mile long Rocky Mountain Range. If you’re travelling with a group of keen skiers ready to take up the challenge of darting around up to 5,000 acres of ski trails, try out complex snowparks and explore wide, unrestrained ski bowls then our West Coast resort options are definitely for you. Twin centres LA, San Francisco, Las Vegas. Incredible cities are within reach when travelling to the West Coast. Our programmes offer students the chance to spot celebs in Los Angeles, be dazzled by the bright lights of Las Vegas or capture that perfect group selfie in front of the Golden Gate Bridge.
