MAIN CHALLENGES: - Change the intersection’s status from barrier to active link between major urban functions and transport;

- Design a public space intended both for the city and the neighbourhood with a variety of spaces and activities;

- Create a whole out of apparently competing functions;

- Integrate all of the existent trees;

- Unite the two sides of the boulevard through an underground passageway with shops and other functions, which connects directly to the subway station.

The project’s aim is to creat these connections, where possible, through minimal interventions, the most important of which is explained in this case study.

/// SCHOOL PROJECTS building in a protected area

The project site concentrated on a small paper factory between two such courtyards.

CHALLENGE: keep the existent building but create a passage way on the ground floor to connect the two court-yards.

The building was requalified to create shops (ground floor) and housing for artisans and their puples as well as a underground caffe. To maintain artisans in the historical centre was of major importance for the project.

HIDE&SEEK

transforming the existing river into a mojor axis of the city by building urban poles on the waterfront

PROPOSED SITE

The river Dambovita, in Bucharest, represents an untapped resource for the city: it has the potential to become a new urban axis with important urban programs.

This would also create the opportunity to have a more diffuse centre for the city, instead of a very concentrated and localised one. The waterfront called for an important urban program: a cinÊmathèque.

The challenge of the site was that such a major urban function should not eclipse the interesting urban fabric behind the facade of the river.

Thus appeared a game of hide and seek between what was behind and what was seen from the river: a game between the apparent and the hidden.

TWIST AND TURN

ĂŽlot Villiot-RapĂŠe

The project is set in South-East of Paris on the side of the Seine River on a very large site. In a first stage, the project meant making a masterplan for the whole plot, then each member of the team chose a building to detail.

The main focus of the masterplan was turned towards the inside of the site, that is to creating real public functions for the neighbourhood with acces from a large public square in the centre of the plot.

The chosen building to detail was that of a housing tower (with a beautiful view towards the Seine and the city) with a silhouette that turns to create different relationships with its context.

FROM PLACE TO PLACE

This was a competition for a small urban installation in Brasov city meant to advertise the upcoming “Memorable City exhibition. The main task was to integrate an old photo from the exhibition on one of the four possible sites.

INSTEAD, we decided to make a generic installation which could be placed on any of the four possible locations. This created a route throughout the city which linked together sever spots.

st

The installations were identical with one exception: the photo would always show how looked the place where it was put decades ago.

recreating the neighbourhood centre in comunist destructured areas

Tudor Elian Diana Stanciulescu

existing urban malls in Bucharest arestt future urban malls in Bucharest est

Real public space in Bucharest is concentrated today only in urban malls and parks: the “piazza” and the urban square have long been forgotten (now “you have to pay for the public life” as Charles Moore puts it).

Moreover, the communist housing neighbourhoods, built following the idea of the “neighbourhood unit”, have mostly remained dead areas during the day, due to a lack of public programs.

The aim of this project is to create neighbourhood centres by spatially and functionally linking together existing urban functions.

CLOUDS - upgrade as process

Today, the small historical center of Bucharest is caught between two extreme visions: it is either seen as an untouchable place of memory and identity, or as a capitalist place of leisure stretched to the limit. Attention is given however exclusively to

the architecture and not to public space. Floating helium balloon structures placed throughout the historical centre of Bucharest are used as signals and as frame for spontane-

ous urban happenings. They thus emphasize the merits and the importance of unbuilt space, in which human interaction generates public activities and transforms the passerby into an active actor of public space.

The purpose of these installations is to remind and incite various and repeated public activities, in the hope that these forgotten urban practices be adopted in time and repeated even without these interventions.

CLOUDS - upgrade as process

Temporary punctual interventions are placed throughout the historical centre of Bucharest. Their main aim is to present another take on things. The inflatable structures that the project proposes emphasize the qualities and potentials of various undeveloped and forgotten spaces without irremediably building on them. The project consists of a series of balloon structures used as canopies to cover different urban open-air activities depending on their location. These balloons act as signals and urban activity generators, rather than permanent, frozen functions. By using the same colors, technology and thus having a same feel to all of the installations, they form an ensemble which acts separately through its parts but which forms a whole when it comes to the message it has to convey. One can imagine that in time, after the installations have been repeatedly placed and taken out of the area, they would act as sparks, leading to new activities appearing independently in the area.

VERTICAL PILGRAMIGE

:-(

?

1.leaving behind earthly distractions

2.begining the pilgramige :-) 3.reaching the top In the first Christian centuries the Holy Stylites, wanted to discover the Truth and to regain peace, detaching themselves from earthly distractions by living on top of pillars, thus raising themselves both physically and spiritually from the

ground. Although they seemed isolated from the world they were constantly in contact with people looking for answers to spiritual questions.

Today, in the context of the excessive growth of cities, both horizontally and vertically, Man’s search for himself and for God seems harder and harder to achieve. Based on the example of Holy Stylites, this project proposes a solution to both

the problem of cities, which are no longer able to be a sustainable frame for real communities, and also for those who are looking for another way of living and thinking.

VERTICAL PILGRAMIGE

The tower itself, is the final form of a whole process of evolution which started when people decided to put the first stone on top of the other, out of desire to build a different world for themselves, and thus making the first level of their “pillar. In it they placed a small prayer space and stairs, knowing they would keep building up.

/// COMPETITIONS international competition

VERTICAL PILGRAMIGE

The tower’s process of growth: 1. the creation of the necessary living spaces in direct relation with the places of prayer, arranged around a common area open towards the sky, intended for micro-agriculture terrains, small recreation areas and others; 2. an increase in height in parallel with the city, as a permanent and symbolic ascension towards the light; 3. the massiveness of the structure transforms it into a sculptural form in which anyone can carv his own private cell; 4. with the building of a new level, all existing rooms underneath keep their functionality and, as time goes on, they become heritage of the building: monk cells become new places of prayer or burial chambers for those who have become saints and the central space is covered, keeping its importance on that level but moving its agricultural functions to the next level. 5. in time, all places of prayer at the lower levels become phases of a pilgrimage - initiatory ascent from Earth to Heaven. The lower rooms left unused accommodate pilgrims on their way.

The functional and architectural rehabilitation of the Ploiesti Racetrack is a direct response to the current chaotic conditions surrounding the site. The intervention has led to a more functional equitation and leisure center

dividing the design into three zones with different atmospheres and qualities: a park a landscape filter, towards the city, the racetrack and the informal arrangement of the different training fields and paddocks

The position near the main access boulevard in the city and the proximity of the Oil and Gas University to the site makes this place a kind of City Gate, as defined in the administration’s strategy.

A project meant to activate the places behind the curtains of socialist collective housing which cut off the old urban fabric from the city. Today, the entire centre of Bucharest is characterized by

these large communist blocks which create corridors along major boulevards. What remains hidden behind are very low-density old neighbourhoods with historical houses conveying the ambience of the city as it was before the

Communist Êpoque. Between the two, the leftover land is often residual space occupied by massive parking and fenced green spaces: a very mineral no-man’s-land with small useless green islands that holds potential for the community.

The intervention is part of an action focused on a case study: an urban island in the Aviaţiei District, built in the Communist periode, where several public debates where initiated in the form of meetings with the tenants.

During such meetings, was also promoted the first intervention in the area, i.e. The Generator of Public Space: a multi-purpose, modular, OSB object, with a temporary life, but with possibilities of relocation within the precincts of the block.

“Mort sous X”

urban intervention

2010 - Paris

with Emilie Kohler

Each year, hundreds of people die on the streets of Paris before our very eyes. We hear about them or even see them but quickly forget about them. The ones who’s names are unknown are called “Mort sous X”.

To keep their memory alive and to give visibility to the associations who are actively doing something for the people of the streets, this installation consisted of chalk outlines of victims of the cold in very busy areas of Paris.

The outline was drawn in chalk or flower, an ephemeral line on the street, swept away by the wind as the memory of the people, whereas the “Mort sous X” inscription was done in grafitti to keep a lasting trace of their presence.

Working with natural materials like wood, clay and stone, the School of Buneşti explores the potential of traditional techniques by learning from the experience of vernacular architecture and applying it to our present needs, without the purpose

of imitation nor with the wish to innovate at any cost. The purpose of the Buneşti workshops has clearly been, over the years, to rediscover the meanings that the natural use of certain local materials confer to the act of build-

ing and to the building themselves. The building process can only be critical and experimental this is why it cannot take place yet in the city or in places where people have already built something.
