Tucson Parks and Recreation Department... his past summer, Tucson Parks and Recreation was recognized as a 2014 Playful City USA honoree. We are proud to have been one of the first to be recognized back in 2007 and pleased to have continued that designation over the past eight years. It is a testament to our Fred H. Gray, Jr., Director staff’s dedication to serving the community and bringing play to Tucson.

T

As we head towards fall and all the seasonal fun that it brings, I reflect back on the great summer memories that were created with our families and friends. I would like to extend a special thank you to our Summer Splash sponsors this summer, M3 Engineering and Technology Corporation and The Association of Pool and Spa Professionals. A number of Tucson families were able to cool off, play, or learn to swim at our pools this summer. Parks and Recreation still needs the support of public and private donors to open additional pools for swim lessons next summer. Find more information at www.tucsonparks.org.

"All the jewelry classes are most enjoyable, the instructors are very skilled and very patient with students who are not always very talented. These classes play a big part in the pleasure of being in Tucson. The variety of classes offered make it impossible to take part in as many as I would wish to."

• Age 12-18 months "Little Movers and Shakers is an outstanding program. My son is 2 and we have been regulars since he was 6 months old. It has been a great place for him to learn to move around and walk and run (he never stops now!) We love the social aspect of the program and the skills it teaches. The instructors love what they do and always interact with the kids and parents. There is a regular routine for each class so if you switch classes or come twice a week like we do you feel right at home and know what to expect."

Pottery - Age 17+

"I wandered into the pottery studio with an interest but no background and not sure I'd be able to learn--not seeing myself as very artistic. Kathy was welcoming, encouraging, and helped me choose a perfect beginner class. Through labs and other interactions, I learned about additional class options and was able to jump into more classes. With top notch instruction, modeling from instructors and fellow students, encouragement and practice, I'm finding new ways to express myself while having a wonderful time."

October 2013 and continuing through September 30, 2014 This exhibit features food of the Spanish Colonial period found in the Tucson Presidio. The exhibit features: chocolate, marching rations and daily foods of the Presidio. The food in this exhibit isn't Mexican, but not entirely European. The exhibit shows the blending of cultures through diet. Fort Lowell Museum picks up the second part of the story with "A Bite to Eat: Feeding the Fort, 1880 www.arizonahistoricalsociety.org Exhibits opens April 5

239th Tucson's Birthday Celebration Wednesday, August 20, 2014, 6-8:30pm The Presidio San Agustín del Tucson is a re-creation of the northeast corner of the original 1775 Spanish presidio or fort. A self-guided tour explains features including a munitions room, torreón (tower), commissary, and living space for soldiers and their families. An open Hohokam pit house is found on site, along with an interpretation of features that came before the Hohokam period. A beautiful mural depicts early residents of the Presidio. A Territorial-era plaza, zaguán (breezeway), and Sonoranstyle streetscape are also featured. Original period row houses along Court Street contain an exhibit space and gift shop. Natural landscaping reflecting the period surrounds the outside walls, as well as a remnant of a boarding house that was located on the site. The presidio wall can also be traced as it existed downtown by following “adobes” set along the former wall path. 56
