Creating a Voicethread

"With VoiceThread, group conversations are collected and shared in one place from anywhere in the world. All with no software to install. A VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate pages and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam). Share a VoiceThread with friends, students, and colleagues for them to record comments too."

Note: Registration is free. With your free account you can create 5 voicethreads.

Getting Started 1. Go to

3. After you have registered, go to the following URL: . Post a message in reply to the voicethread. Note: You can post messages by webcam (audio and video), with a microphone on your PC (audio only) or by typing text.

Posting a Comment 1. Simply click the “Comment” button associated with the slide. Exit the Voicethread.

Click the arrow to move to the next slide.

2. Add a digital photo of yourself (if you are a first time user). 3. Click “Record” to begin your audio comment or click “Type” to use your keyboard for a written comment. You can also: 1. Use your phone to comment. 2. Use your webcam to comment 3. Upload a previously recorded audio comment.

Creating Your Own Voicethread 1. Login to

2. Click on the tab labeled “Create”.

3. Click the “Upload” button to upload an artifact for the Voicethread discussion (image, a document with text, URL or video). *You can upload media from Facebook, Flickr, and even the New York Public Library Digital Collection.

4. Comment on your media for each slide (This can be done later also).

Choose your Playback and Publishing options.

5. Share your voicethread. You can copy and past the link in your Blackboard Course Site. *Note: You can create groups (for classes) and a contact list. This can make it easier to share voicethread with only specific individuals or groups of students.
