Honoring

100 Years

of The Travel Corporation

Dinner date

Sohebele Lodge

ork w to y a w r e h n o a Be The family at Sohebele Lodge, one of the first game reserves we created in the 1960s.

Our engagement Their legacy began as a love story over 60 years ago. In the 1950s, Beatrice caught the eye of a young entrepreneur named Stanley, who wore a miniature red carnation flower in his lapel. Later, Beatrice founded Red Carnation Hotels, a renowned collection of award-winning 5 star hotels across the globe. Above is a photo of Bea and Stanley celebrating in a Johannesburg nightclub on the night they got engaged.

10

As newlyweds, Bea and Stanley purchased their first hotel and launched a lifelong partnership of world-class hospitality and fine dining. They later went on to run the Hyde Park Hotel and opened The Colony which became a famous supper club bringing the first international cabaret stars to South Africa, such as Tom Jones and Petula Clark.

OUR FAMILY MOTTO IS

“In pursuit of excellence.”

Behind the rich heritage of The Travel Corporation are enduring stories of love, determination and family. Discover how the Tollmans’ legacy — which will celebrate 100 years in 2020 — grew from a single South African hotel to a family-run collection of 40 award-winning brands around the globe.

In 1955, Stanley and his brother, Arnold, went to London for the first time. Arnold, a dentist by profession, later opened the first Trafalgar office in New York and his son, Gavin, is now president of Trafalgar.

Oyster Box Hotel Paternoster is where it all began for the Tollman family. After losing everything in the Great Depression, Stanley’s father, Solomon Tollman, moved to this fishing village and set up a small hotel. Above is an image of Stanley (who was born in Paternoster), his son Brett, now the CEO of The Travel Corporation, and his granddaughter Ella revisiting their roots in a very special moment.

Okavango Delta

Spending time by the sea is part of the Tollman family heritage. In another homage to the sea, the legendary Oyster Box Hotel, set on the coast of KwaZuluNatal, is near and dear to their hearts; Stanley and Bea enjoyed an early date here in 1952. They later purchased the property in 2006. The beautiful hotel was totally rebuilt and remains one of Africa’s most celebrated hotels. CALL

Bea, Stanley and family are enjoying a piece of paradise in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Within this region, The Red Carnation Hotel Collection will welcome the newest member of its family: Xigera Safari Lodge, opening in 2020.

The TreadRight Foundation At Lion World Travel, we take great pride in creating experiences of a lifetime. Exploring the world and gaining a deeper understanding of each destination helps forge lasting connections to the history, culture and natural elements that makes each special. As such, we are an active partner and supporter of the not-for-profit TreadRight Foundation’s sustainability work and projects. Created as a joint initiative between The Travel Corporation’s family of brands, The TreadRight Foundation is a not-for-profit that works to ensure the environment and communities we visit remain vibrant for generations to come. To date, TreadRight has supported some 50-plus sustainable projects worldwide.

To learn more, visit TreadRight.org.

Making Travel Matter Travel is an incredible gift. It has the ability to open our eyes, our hearts and our minds to the unique cultures and spellbinding beauty of the natural world. But with this gift comes a responsibility — to protect the world as we know it. At Lion World and TreadRight, our mission is clear: to have a positive impact on the people and communities we visit, to help protect wild and marine life, and to care for the planet we all call home.

PEOPLE

We are committed to encouraging the cultures, traditions and arts of the communities we visit to thrive. We seek to enable some of these communities to see true benefits from tourism through economic empowerment. We do this through our support of micro-enterprises and community-based tourism initiatives that build positive futures for community members and their families.

WILDLIFE

The world’s wildlife is balancing on a dangerous precipice, so it is our responsibility to help protect some of these species most at risk from extinction. Partnering with leading wildlife organisations, we work to help protect and rehabilitate elephant, rhino and big cat populations around the world whilst also educating our guests on ethical wildlife experiences.

PLANET

Reducing the environmental impact of our business is at the core of much of what we do. We’ve committed to eliminating all avoidable single-use plastics in both our offices and out on the road by 2022. And that’s just the beginning. In 2017, we introduced our e-docs program, which allows our guests to receive their travel documents digitally, replacing the need for paper whilst also having a tree planted in their name as part of our plant a tree initiative. All of this, while supporting projects striving to keep our oceans and coastlines clean, are just some of the ways we’re committing to safeguarding the future of our planet.

Your Day

ON SAFARI

EACH DAY ON SAFARI BRINGS A NEW MAGICAL EXPERIENCE Perhaps you will encounter thousands of migrating wildebeest in the Serengeti, or a leopard lounging in a tree in South Africa. You may meet noble Maasai tribesmen in Kenya or take a tranquil canoe ride in Botswana. The anticipation of what may occur each day on safari is part of the allure! A typical day might be something like this:

5.30–6.00 AM

Wake up to the chatter of birds. After a steaming cup of coffee or tea and some light snacks, venture out into the bush. This is the magnificent beginning to a new day as you witness Africa awakening.

6.00–9.00 AM

In the cool hours of the early morning, the game is active as they wake up from the night’s rest and predators are returning from the hunt. Photo opportunities abound as you go in search of the big five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. A myriad of other game also awaits — herds of grazing impala and zebra, graceful giraffes feeding from the tall branches or hippos slumbering in the rivers. Stop at a scenic spot for a snack and warm beverage as you stretch your legs and chat with your guide.

9.00 AM

Return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast. You will have built up quite an appetite!

10.00 AM

Relax at the lodge or enjoy a guided bush walk to experience the world of Africa’s small creatures and plants. You may follow animal spoors or get a fascinating glimpse at the lives of ant lions and dung beetles.

NOON

Enjoy the surrounding landscape as you relax over a delectable lunch of freshly prepared cuisine from locally grown foods.

2.00 PM

As the animals retreat to a shady spot, lounge on your deck, take a refreshing dip in the pool or enjoy a siesta to make up for the early morning. If your lodge has a spa, you may indulge in a spa treatment.

3.30 PM

Afternoon tea with delicious sweet or savory treats is served before you head out for the late afternoon or evening game drive.

4.00–7.00 PM

As the day cools and the afternoon turns into evening, the wildlife arouses from their lazy afternoon naps and the predators go in search of their next meal. You may be lucky to follow a lion on the hunt or watch a herd of elephants drinking at the waterhole. Keep an eye out for hyenas as they steal a kill from earlier in the day. Gaze at a vivid African sunset as you enjoy a cocktail at a scenic spot. Then continue your game drive as the light fades, looking out for wildlife by way of a carefully shone spotlight.

7.00 PM

Return to the lodge for dinner served at an elegantly set table or in an open boma under the stars. Later, gather around the campfire to exchange stories of the day’s sightings, stargaze or retire in preparation for another breathtaking day on safari. As you sink into your comfortable bed, listen to the laughs of hyenas and the roars of territorial lion prides. CALL

If you’re looking for an African vacation that offers more than a safari, we highly recommend South Africa. It goes without saying that the wildlife is wonderful and there are dozens of game reserves to visit. One can even choose a malaria-free reserve, which is great if you are traveling with children. The scenery is remarkable. Aside from the panoramic views and seaside cliffs of Cape Town, you’ll find breathtaking photo opportunities in the Mpumalanga region’s Panorama Route and along the Garden Route in the Eastern Cape. Some of the most superb food we’ve enjoyed has been in South Africa. From seafood in gourmet restaurants to fresh markets and amazing wines, South Africa is a great culinary destination! The cultural experiences are varied too. South Africa is known as the “Rainbow Nation” for good reason — it is one of the most multicultural places in the world! You can visit small villages, dine at ethnic restaurants or cook with a local and learn about their traditional cuisine. In the townships, you will meet the locals, or on a visit to Robben Island learn about the life of Nelson Mandela. Art galleries with traditional art abound, and if it is music that interests you, there are ample opportunities to experience local music.

WHY WE LOVE

BOTSWANA

ZIMBABWE

Linyanti Reserve

Victoria Falls Okavango Delta Maun

Moremi Game Reserve Makgadikgadi Pans

Chobe National Park

BOTSWANA Johannesburg

SOUTH AFRICA

When we think of Botswana, we think of truly pristine wilderness, for the most part totally unspoiled by man’s intervention. One can experience this feeling of remoteness when flying over the country in a small bush plane and realizing just how untouched the land is. Botswana also tops our list of safari destinations because of the diversity of environments and experiences it offers. The Okavango Delta, with its floodplains and islands, is remarkable, and wildlife viewing is spectacular. Mokoro (canoe) rides are a unique experience in this area, and they are often accompanied by walking safaris. A visit to the Kalahari, with its dry saltpans, gives one a taste of the desert, but in the rainy season, animals migrate here in large numbers to enjoy the fresh green grasses that sprout everywhere. A day spent with a San Bushman learning about their traditional skills is a fantastic adventure! The Chobe National Park is the stomping ground of thousands of elephants. Here, safari drives, as well as peaceful cruises on the Chobe River, bring you up close to the wildlife. Cruises provide amazing photo opportunities of elephants playing at the water’s edge, crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks and hippo pods cooling in the water. Night game drives and off-road game viewing are offered in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, adding another dimension to the safari experience.

KENYA Loisaba Conservancy Lewa/Mt. Kenya Ol Pejeta Conservancy Nairobi

Maasai Mara

Serengeti

Mt. Kilimanjaro Ngorongoro Conservation Area

TANZANIA

Zanzibar

It is the wide-open plains of the Maasai Mara teeming with herds of zebras, gazelles, and wildebeest and dotted with Maasai herdsmen tending their cattle that draws us to Kenya. The Mara, with its vast and wide-open savannahs and plains, is an extraordinary place, bustling with wildlife, not only in the migration season when tourists flock there to witness this spectacle, but all year round. Interacting with the Maasai at their local villages is always an eye-opener. Aside from the Maasai Mara, our favorite places include the Shaba and Samburu game reserves, dry and arid areas recommended for the unique species that are found there. Encounters with the regal and colorful Samburu tribe are a common occurrence. We love Amboseli with its wonderful views of Mount Kilimanjaro and its large elephant herds, which are a continual presence. Lake Nakuru and Lake Elmenteita are great for their aquatic bird life, such as flamingos and pelicans. Game viewing is excellent there too. Lake Nakuru is a rhino sanctuary, and sightings of black and white rhinos are common. Other lesser visited areas include Tsavo, Laikipia and Meru, but these areas are well worth considering for an intimate and pristine safari experience. Kenya has a range of diverse wildlife areas, making it an amazing safari destination. It also offers a terrific selection of activities from balloon safaris to horseback riding, camel trekking and visits with local tribespeople.

Grumeti Reserve Serengeti Arusha

Ngorongoro Conservation Area Lake Eyasi Mahale Mountain National Park

Mt. Kilimanjaro Tarangire National Park

TANZANIA

Ruaha National Park Selous Game Reserve

It is Tanzania’s incredible diversity of gameviewing areas that appeals to us. From the snowcapped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro to the vast herds of game grazing on the endless plains of the Serengeti, from the game-rich Ngorongoro Crater to the sun-kissed beaches of Zanzibar, Tanzania has an allure for all. The endless and vast plains of the Serengeti are awesome, and whether or not you manage to glimpse the wildebeest migration, which usually occurs in that area between May and August, game viewing is always exceptional! In Tarangire National Park, the gigantic baobab trees silhouetted against the sky are spectacular. It is known for its large population of elephants and other wildlife. Ngorongoro Crater is a natural wonder, a caldera where animals abound 2,000 feet down on the crater floor. Views into the crater from its rim are awe-inspiring. For an intimate and more remote experience, we highly recommended the southern parks of Ruaha and Selous, unspoiled Africa with phenomenal scenery and wildlife inhabitants. The Mahale Mountains, with their large population of chimpanzees, also offer a unique wildlife experience! In Zanzibar, sun-soaked white beaches interspersed with picturesque fishing villages lapped by the warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean provide the perfect place to relax, soak up the sun and take a break after an exhilarating safari. Water sports provide fun for adventure seekers. For a cultural and sightseeing experience, visit Stone Town, a place of winding alleyways, bustling bazaars, mosques and Arab houses.

WHY WE LOVE

ZAMBIA

White rhino near Victoria Falls

Zambia’s game reserves are remote, wild and teeming with wildlife. If you are looking for a safari where few have ventured, then Zambia is the place to go! South Luangwa National Park

ZAMBIA Lower Zambezi National Park

Whether you visit the Luangwa Valley, home of the legendary walking safari, the lush rivers of Kafue National Park, or the Lower Zambezi, where one can get really close to wildlife from its watery channels, you will experience a remote and unspoiled wilderness. Victoria Falls on the Zambian side provides an awe-inspiring sight and the chance to

experience the drenching mist of the falls in the wet season. Adventure seekers have no shortage of activities to fuel that rush of adrenaline. From whitewater rafting to bungee jumping, micro lighting, helicopter rides and a swim at the edge of the falls in Devils Pool, there is an activity for every wish. The variety of experiences is unmatched. Game drives, canoe trips, balloon safaris, visits to local villages and gazing at the thundering Victoria Falls are all part of a Zambian vacation.

Mana Pools National Park

Victoria Falls

ZIMBABWE Chobe National Park

BOTSWANA

Johannesburg

Hwange National Park

Victoria Falls is an amazing natural spectacle, especially in the rainy season, when the waters thunder into the gorge below and the mist brings the forest to life! But there is a lot more to Zimbabwe. It’s a great place for a safari where you will encounter fewer people and an abundance of animals. Hwange is a vast and sprawling reserve with a huge diversity of animal life, and

it shelters thousands of elephants as its inhabitants. We especially love the remote and unspoiled Mana Pools, where wildlife is attracted to its waters and it feels as if you’re the only human life in the region. The variety of activities makes this an awesome safari experience. You can enjoy game drives, nature walks, and canoe and boat cruises.

Damaraland Swakopmund

Windhoek Sossusvlei

Namibia’s stark Namib Desert, towering sand dunes of Sossusvlei and humbling sense of space make Namibia an extraordinary place to visit. One can simply marvel at the harsh but majestic desert surroundings, enjoy an adventure as you climb the dunes or soar over them in a hot air balloon! It’s a fantastic wildlife destination as well, with the Etosha National Park as its safari highlight. Large herds of plains game concentrate around the waterholes in the dry season, whilst rainfall in the summer months produces a profusion of new life. In the Damaraland area, it is amazing to see desertadapted animals such as elephants and black rhinos. Twyfelfontein is known for its rock art from some of the world’s earliest civilizations. Visitors can marvel at the Petrified Forest and rare plant life such as the Welwitschia mirabilis, which can live up to 1,500 years in harsh desert conditions. Along with these breathtakingly beautiful natural attractions, visitors can experience the desolate Skeleton Coast. The renowned Skeleton Coast flights will often provide amazing sights of the desert-adapted elephants on the dunes on one side and seals frolicking in the waters on the other — simply incredible! One of our most memorable experiences was a fascinating visit to the primitive Himba tribe, some of the last true nomads in Africa, still existing as they have for hundreds of years.

As you drive through the country, you’ll be amazed at its panoramic landscapes, and you’ll be in awe of its lush forests. Encountering gorillas for the first time is an extraordinarily moving experience as you think of their vulnerability and wonder at their human-like characteristics. The babies are adorable and enjoyable to watch. You will be sad to leave and know that

A visit to the Kigali Memorial Centre is a moving and poignant experience. The center is built on a site where over 250,000 victims of the genocide of 1994 are buried and is a permanent memorial to those who fell victim to the genocide. It serves as a place for people to grieve those they lost and is a meaningful experience for those who have read the book Hotel Rwanda.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

90

Uganda offers wildlife enthusiasts one of the most memorable and moving experiences on earth — a visit with the endangered mountain gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — often said to be life-changing! We also love Uganda for its other wildlife viewing opportunities, especially primates, of which Uganda is home to the world’s greatest concentration. Kibale National Park is home to the greatest variety of primates and concentration of primates found anywhere in East Africa. Add to this the elusive forest elephants that move seasonally through the

forest, and you can see why Kibale National Park is a superb safari destination. The lush savannah of Queen Elizabeth National Park offers prime grazing to buffalo, elephants, antelopes and over 600 bird species. At Murchison Falls National Park, the Victoria Nile plunges over the remnant rift valley wall of the falls, the centerpiece of the park. Regular visitors include many species, such as elephants, giraffes and buffalo, while hippos and Nile crocodiles are permanent residents.

WHY WE LOVE

EGYPT & JORDAN

JORDAN Petra

Cairo

EGYPT

Luxor

Nile River Cruise Aswan/Abu Simbel

EGYPT Ancient Egypt has long been considered one of the most important and interesting civilizations in history. Travel back in time to gaze at the Pyramids of Giza, discovering the Valley of the Kings and the ancient temples. Kick back, relax and cruise the Nile, the world’s longest river. You can search for treasures in the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Watch the sun rise on Mount Sinai, spend time in the colorful capital of Cairo, or visit the Valley of the Kings, where Tutankhamun’s tomb was found. Explore the beaches of the Red Sea Coast, and get to know Egypt’s friendly people. This is the place to discover an ancient civilization, a world of wonder where time is measured by dynasties and distance by the setting sun.

JORDAN This is a land of lost cities, epic adventures, ancient sites and natural wonders. The most popular destination in Jordan is Petra, an ancient Nabatean city of temples and tombs, locked in the heart of Jordan’s red sandstone escarpments, and the jewel in the crown of the country’s many antiquities. History is easy to find not only in Petra, but throughout the country. Spend time in the expansive, modern capital city of Amman. Travel to Jerash, an ancient Roman city with endless ruins. You can relax at the renowned Dead Sea, with sumptuous resorts in the middle of arid desert landscapes. There are boundless canyons flowing with seasonal water, oases of palm trees and bursts of springtime flowers scattered across scorched hills. Then there’s hiking, canyoneering (traveling in canyons using a variety of techniques), diving, ATV tours and cooking lessons. Jordan has it all. Remarkably, the landscape has changed little in the last 2,000 years.
