OCEAN SUMMIT - 2019 THE RICH NORTHSEA Presenting science through sports is a great way to keep momentum. More important sports and especially sailing is a sublime test object for scientists. Athletes need to perform under pressure, in a certain time frame and have fewer distraction then non-athletes. So data and ideas were presented to speed up knowledge and innovations related to clean seas and the opportunities to combine applied research with new hightech futuristic foiling boats. The DutchSail Teambase gave us a perfect view of the older: tallships from all over the world.

Annemieke Nijhof (m), director of Top Sector Water & Maritime shared her ideas together with Jan Peter Balkenende (l), former PM of the Netherlands and chairman of the Dutch Sustainable Growth Coalition and Hans Huis in ‘t Veld (r), chairman of the DutchSail Foundation, about sustainability, our nations climate activation and cleaner Ocean shipping. A lot of opportunities for cooperation between the 3 initiatives.

Scientist of soil, researchers of waves, international sailing athletes, chemical graduates, shipbuilders, nature based engineers, data analysts, ocean advocates, and more. The discussion on stage where broad and specialist. Exactly what an Ocean Summit in The Netherlands should contain. A yearly occasion to better our oceans and seas.

SUSTAINABLE OCEANS: THE NORTH SEA AS CHALLENGING TEST-CASE AND OPEN DISCUSSION

On behalf of WUR Marien, NIOZ and TNO, Luca van Duren gave an update on today’s challenges of the North Sea and research agenda. Especially related to opportunities with offshore windfarms and data collection. Data collection is needed for all kind of new activities at the North Sea. Data related to currents, waves, salinity, oxygen, sediments, nutrients, algal growth and profiles over depths. Training boats from DutchSail can collect a lot of additional data especially since the strong reduction of

the National monitoring program over past decades. ‘We see oceans as our last wilderness, relatively pristine.

They are beautiful, above and below water. But actually our Seas are heavily used. All the different activities like: fishing, oil / gas extraction, shipping, sand mining, military exercise, rubbish dump and more. Plastic is found in the Mariana Trench.

The North Sea is one of the busiest seas in the world. As humans we need to start organising sustainable exploitation.

‘If we can do it here, then we can serve as a template for other areas.’

INTRODUCTION AND OPEN DISCUSSION

by Jan Peter Balkenende - DSGC Former Prime Minister of The Netherlands explained the aim of the Dutch Sustainable Growth Coalition (DSGC), consisting of AkzoNobel, DSM, Friesland Campina, Heineken, KLM, Philips, SHELL and Unilever, supported by the employers organization VNONCW. The companies developed a joint initiative about Cleaner Ocean Shipping. This program about collaboration in stimulating sustainable innovations in shipping, consist of: ➤

ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES ON PLASTIC IN THE OCEANS

Advocate of the oceans: Emily Penn shared her ideas and new research results on plastic in the oceans. Data were collected from expeditions with research sailing vessel eXXpedition with an all-female crew. Collected plastics and microplastics are used for research and public awareness messages: refuse, reuse and recycle (single used) plastic as much as possible. Microplastics enter the food chain through fish in the Oceans and eect our health.

DEVELOPMENT OF CLIMATE NEUTRAL SHIPPING

Friesland Campina and Heineken are the biggest shippers from the Netherlands. Shell delivered bio fuel for a Maersk transport with world biggest container vessel “Mette Maersk� sailing from Rotterdam to Shanghai and return. Arriving back in Rotterdam one day before the summit. It proved possible to use the biofuel in the engines of this huge container vessel.

Sail on Scheveningen 2019 is part of the Liberty Tall Ship Regatta 2019. This Regatta starts on 6 June in Rouen, France with the L'Armada Rouen.

This event lasts until June 16, after which the fleet in a race of four days speed to Scheveningen for Sail on Scheveningen. Coinciding with the 75-year anniversary of d-day and the liberation of the occupied territory in northwestern Europe, the theme is international friendship and understanding.

FUTURISTIC INNOVATIONS TO ENHANCE PERFORMANCE IN SAILING AND SUSTAINABILITY by skipper Simeon Tienpont (DutchSail), Bas Buchner (MARIN), Pieter Boersma (TNO) and Tim Leeuwerink (NLR).

Bas Büchner (Marin) and Tim Leeuwerik (NLR) explained the opportunities of combined hydro- and aero dynamics research for foiling boats and offshore windfarms, while Pieter Huisman (TNO) explained the research of dynamic forces on the boats. Skipper Simeon Tienpont, twice winner of the America’s Cup with a US team (2011 and 2013) and skipper in the last Volvo Ocean Race with team AkzoNobel, took the initiative to a first Dutch entry in the America’s Cup since 168 years. He believes a Dutch team could participate and seriously battle for the cup or the next Ocean Race with foiling monohull boats. His opinion is based on a long story of successful world class Dutch sailors, a world class maritime and aerospace industry and knowledge institutes in the Netherlands. We have innovative international Dutch enterprises and Government support with several Topsectors.

The connection of sports and research is done through DutchSail. A foundation which helps to unlock societal data through the sports of sailing. It is also a vehicle to showcase Dutch innovations. In 2018 Ocean Racing Team AkzoNobel broke the 24 hours record monohulls when they sailed in the North Atlantic. Due to the support from Deltares and MARIN this was possible. The data collected from the Deltares ocean models are nowadays used for shipping routing.

SUSTAINABLE HEALTH AND EMPLOYABILITY IN A 24/7 WORLD

Cardiac stress is a common cause in this 24/7 world. People feel pressure due to work, studies, sport performances, social ability, family values or society in general, are a few of the reasons. Stress will have affect on your life in different ways. Bert has research stress for a long time now by setting biomarkers. Strains of hair are one of those markers. By studying somebody’s hair he can see when and how severe somebody has felt stressed.

The research was done on Ocean Racing sailors who worked for more then 9 month in a very stressful situation. Pressure of performing but also life-threatening situation from the power of the wind and ocean. The studies showed much insight in scheduled working hours for example nurses, doctors, ocean engineers, and submarine crewmembers.

SHARING ECO-SYSTEM OF KNOWLEDGE & INNOVATIONS PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF THE DUTCHSAIL INNOVATION PROGRAM

A fast vessel can collect data once a day far beyond the capacity of a dredging ship. Van Oord use the results already to optimize the navigation for its dredging activities. Research done one human performance can be used to find an optimum work-sleep rhythm for o-shore crew. Wind turbines out on the ocean have influence on underwater and above water stream. Which again influences all nearby biodiversity. Sharing an eco-system of research institutes, government, businesses benefits in finding answers to social issues. The amount of answers and new insights when this mixture of institutes where mixed together, was spectacular.

The energy it created will be used for longer then the sailing campaign was set out for.

As former chairman of Topsector Water & Maritime and Board member of DutchSail Hans Huis in ’t Veld explained the importance for knowledge institutes, private companies and government to collaborate with world class sailing activities as proven during the last Volvo Ocean Race.Mark van Koningsveld of Van Oord presents the big data from the sailing team used in daily worklife. Opportunities for the development of flat oyster populations on existing and planned wind farms in the Dutch section of the North Sea is great. Project ‘De Rijke Noordzee’ wants to encourage the constructionists of wind farms to reinforce their sights with nature. Marjolein, Director Foundation the North Sea: "with the energy transition, the North Sea undergoes a turbulent and hopeful time. If we stimulate underwater nature so it can flourish in wind farms, we link the energy transition in the development and restoration of beautiful North Sea nature. "
