iverse and vibrant, the city of Valdosta is a vivid example of modern southern culture. Traditional values like honor, hospitality and personal independence meld in perfect harmony with the pluralism encouraged by a modern college town. The city exemplifies many aspects of local culture that are sources of pride for the region: A diverse population, varied cuisine, as well as a wide variety of religious and ethnic traditions.

This diverse population, working cooperatively, makes the Valdosta/Lowndes County region an exceptional place to live, work or visit. “Deeply committed to fostering a culture of fairness, equity, and the inclusion of its diverse students, faculty, staff and other key stakeholders,” Valdosta State University’s Office of Social Equality “promotes enrichment and opportunity through diversity” by actively seeking ways to fulfill their mission of inclusion and cultural awareness. This commitment originates from a fundamental belief that a variety of viewpoints increases perspective, and thus, encourages critical thinking. This sentiment is echoed throughout VSU and the Valdosta region. In Lowndes

County, people from a variety of life paths that represent different ethnic, gender, racial and socioeconomic backgrounds are considered a necessary and integral facet of growing a thriving social and economic environment. “Achieving Excellence through Diversity,” Valdosta State University’s African American Studies program honors graduates at its annual Multicultural Sankofa Awards every spring in the campus Student Union Theater. “Sankofa” is a West African word that means “to go back and get it” – “looking back in order to move forward.” The Sankofa bird symbolizes revisiting history so that progress can be made.

This ceremony is an opportunity for community members to celebrate the achievements of students whose individual successes might not otherwise be acknowledged in a more traditional commencement ceremony. The culture of the African American community has had a tremendous influence on the region. “Winnersville” pride wouldn’t be possible without the contributions of AfricanAmericans and other ethnicities to the local culture. Jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, various cuisines and many religious customs – Christian and otherwise – would not exist without the multiethnic contributions from the region’s diverse population and history. As the local minority population continues to grow, Valdosta/Lowndes County continues to foster inclusiveness by encouraging a culture that celebrates diversity.

Imagine a downtown supermarket that sells halal meat next to fresh vegetables and Indian spices; Lowndes County cuisine is a far cry from a simple choice between the two or three traditional groceries. In addition to traditional chain supermarkets and fast food, Valdosta also features a farmers market, multiple independent grocers, fine restaurants and the La Jalisco Super Mercado-turned-taqueria that cranks out all-you-can-eat tacos on handmade corn tortillas for only $10. Filling choices range from carne asada to cow tongue. Additionally, Mina’s popular Asian market and bakery sells exotic plum sauces and pancit noodles alongside delicious homemade blueberry cupcakes. Hosted by the Valdosta Asian Cultural Association, the famous annual Azalea International Folk Fair invites participants to immerse themselves in a dazzling global experience. Featuring an Asian experience, a Latin excursion and an African exposition, the Azalea Folk Fair has a sampling of nearly every influence that makes the Lowndes County region rich and diverse. Festival attendees enjoy the opportunity to experience dances, exhibits, ceremonies, games and food from a variety of cultures represented in the Lowndes County area. For six years, Valdosta has been the location of the South Georgia Pride Festival celebrating the bisexual, gay, lesbian and transgender community. South Georgia Pride was organized with the intent of charitably benefiting the equality and rights of the LGBT population in the region.

In addition to a wide range of area Christian churches, Valdosta is also home to a Jewish synagogue, a pagan covenant and a Muslim cultural center. Although small, the Valdosta Muslim community is remarkably diverse, including both Sunnis and Shiites. Immigrants and native-born Malaysians, Bangladeshis, Iranians and Pakistanis are all represented. Members come from a broad range of occupations, and several are international students who attend Valdosta State University. The local center is vital because the nearest center of worship for Muslims is about 90 miles away in Albany, Georgia. This year, Valdosta State University hosted an interfaith discussion on religious holidays and traditions featuring a panel consisting of an Episcopalian priest, a Jewish rabbi and three members of the local Pagan Unitarian Universalist Covenant. Valdosta consistently “looks back in order to move forward.” The modern local culture is quite diverse with multiple influences and is a far cry from its Antebellum roots. The increasingly rich variety of perspectives in the Lowndes County region continue to ensure a steady flow of social capital and the kind of enduring success southern cities like Valdosta are known for in the face of adversity. ■

or decades, countless innovative community ideas have started in the century-old Chamber house. From Leadership Lowndes and the Tourism Authority to the annual Bird Supper, the historic Barber home has had a positive impact on the Lowndes County region. The Barber House is more than a building where the chamber conducts business; it has contributed to the growing success of the community and surrounding area.

HOUSE Envisioned and constructed in 1915 by a prominent local entrepreneur, the presentday Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber House has a history as rich and exceptional as the original mansion was at its inception. E.R. Barber erected his abode with the intention of exhibiting the finer things in life. The original house plans included five bedrooms, a sunroom, an electric elevator and a baseboard vacuum system. Barber’s daughter, Ola, inherited the stately home in 1965.

Not long after inheriting the house, Ola Barber Pittman had to fight protect it. At the time, the government tried to acquire her land for much-needed parking near Valdosta’s new post office. Pittman tirelessly fought to save the home – even going so far as to take her complaints to the federal government to ensure her father’s legacy was preserved. In the end, Pittman’s gritty determination prevailed, and she lived out most of her remaining years in the family home. At the time of her death, Pittman left the house to the citizens of Valdosta and established a trust for its upkeep with precise directions for its use. It was her wish that the home would be preserved for the

Because Pittman spent the last two years of her life in a skilled nursing facility, the house required quite a bit of work before its trustee could even consider what to do with her palatial posthumous gift. Richard Hill and other members of the Southwest Georgia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects tackled the landscaping and overgrown shrubs that shrouded the onceopulent home. With a path finally cleared to the front door, Gelaine Foster and other brave members of the Valdosta Junior Woman’s Club commenced the monumental task of clearing the house for much-needed repairs and extensive renovations. Countless hours of labor were necessary to first purge, and then polish the cluttered and abandoned house. Volunteers spent more than two months cataloging and cleaning its vast contents. This lengthy cleanup spurred the inception of the Valdosta Heritage Foundation; Over stacks of crumbling papers, historical books and piles of trash, volunteers discussed the need for preservation of other historic homes in the area. When the cleanup was finally completed, the groundwork was laid for the

people of Valdosta to “provide a place where persons may come and sit, reflect and think in an atmosphere of beauty and solitude.” With the cooperation of several community organizations, the Chamber has been able to preserve the Barber House legacy.

future of the heritage foundation and Valdosta’s Chamber of Commerce was approached about transferring its location to the Barber House. Great pains were taken to preserve as much of the original integrity of the home as possible. Community members responded, donating time and money to ensure the house was restored as close to its former glory as possible. In 1981, the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce moved its headquarters to the restored home. “The Front Door of the Community,” the Chamber house continues to be a significant asset to the region. The Barber House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Every year, more than 2,800 visitors experience the house in its fully restored glory. Over the years, several updates have enhanced the safety and comfort of the historic house, such as a modern electrical system and central air conditioning. Funds from the Barber trust were used in the initial renovation of the home, and the trust has ensured the historic integrity of the home is maintained.

hen Henry David Thoreau wrote “heaven is under our feet, as well as over our heads,” in awe of Walden Pond, he could have easily been musing about Valdosta and its surrounding landscape. Shaded by live oaks draped in ethereal Spanish moss, the “Azalea City” is also home to more than 29 natural recreation areas. Valdosta is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. Slow down and experience the region’s storied past while enjoying a scenic drive on one of the areas many historic byways. Just outside of the modern conveniences of Valdosta, the land spreads out and the country streets move into small communities, each of which offers its own one-of-a-kind charms and captivating history. Visitors will discover an outdoor paradise: Lakes seem to overflow with a variety of fish, Woodlands are rife with wildlife and rivers flow unwaveringly across the landscape. In addition to myriad parks, hiking, hunting and fishing opportunities, the year-round, subtropical climate ensures that there is never a bad season to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors in the Lowndes County region.

Valdosta and its surrounding area offer a variety of recreational pastimes that range from urban experiences to backcountry settings. Whether you want to play a round of golf, waste the day away angling for a

record-breaker or simply relax and soak up the sun in a gorgeous natural setting, you will find the perfect opportunity in Valdosta and Lowndes County.

In addition to five area golf courses, countless parks, several shooting ranges, gorgeous winding rivers and mystical swamplands, the region offers a variety of organized recreational sports leagues for men and women in multiple age divisions. Residents enjoy three-season softball, basketball, volleyball and a year-round tennis program. Valdosta also has a full range of athletic programs for young girls and boys, including baseball, softball, basketball, football, soccer and cheerleading. From card clubs and arts and crafts to dance classes, bowling, martial arts classes and the Senior Olympics, the region provides an array of activities that keep locals active and on the go – even the opportunity to travel as a community across the nation and the world with a Travel Club.

Valdosta’s Azalea City Trail is a multi-use pathway constructed by the city to provide recreational opportunities for residents and a healthier alternative for commuters. The 12-foot-wide concrete path links the Valdosta State University campus with various city parks, neighborhoods, schools, dorms and shopping centers. The trail stretches for 2.7 miles from the Craig Center, a city park, to the Youth Complex, a sports and recreation facility owned and operated by the City of Valdosta. Locals and visitors alike do not have to travel far to experience the countless natural wonders of the Valdosta/Lowndes County Region. Outdoor adventurers can kayak or hike through a wetland or one of the areas many scenic rivers and trails located just minutes from downtown Valdosta. Nearby lakes offer swimming, boating and fishing, and with the Grand Bay Wetlands Center providing environmentally friendly outdoor and educational experiences, there’s no need to leave the state for an exciting or educational outdoor experience. Additionally, the three state parks in close proximity to Valdosta add to the already expansive local outdoor options with even more great hunting, fishing, hiking and camping opportunities. A popular local destination, Reed Bingham State Park is only an hour’s drive north of Valdosta. Reed has more than 40 campsites and a 375-acre lake that includes three boat ramps, a fishing pier and a marked swimming beach. Okefenokee State Park is a bit farther than an hour away, but well worth the drive.

GAVALCW16 design.indd 18

8/12/2016 1:54:19 PM

Upon arrival, visitors find themselves in the midst of a 400,000-acre refuge with magnificent forests, marshland and lakes. Boasting nationally recognized lakes teeming with more than 30 species of fish, Okefenokee is an angler’s paradise. Canoeing, kayaking and nine miles of hiking trails add to the adventure of this incomparable outdoor refuge. The Okefenokee is also a blackwater refuge for gators, endangered bird species and soft-shell turtles. It is accessible by 120 miles of paddling trails. Visitors also have the opportunity to sign up for an overnight guided paddling excursion through bog, cypress forests and animal habitats. Trip options range from one to five days. Just a little more than two hours south by car, the Apalachicola National Forest has four rivers and lakes for recreational boating and fishing. The forest also offers more than 10 hunting camps in addition to 39 miles of hiking trails, 172 miles of motorized trails, 68 miles of motorcycle trails and 182 miles of equestrian trails.

Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area is a 13,500-acre swamp partially located in Lowndes County. It contains the Grand Bay Wetlands Management Area and educational center. Popular for both locals and tourists, Grand Bay features a boardwalk, education rooms and an observation tower. The center also offers natural wetlands education programs, field trips and accredited teacher training. Grand Bay is part of an 18,000-acre wetlands complex of wooded swampland that pales in size only when compared to the Okefenokee Swamp. The area is open year-round, Saturday through Sunday, for outdoor sports including fishing, paddling, hiking, camping and hunting. It is also a popular spot for boaters and kayakers. A launch site for paddlers north of Valdosta leads through a dizzying array of natural habitats in the area. Boats are limited to 10 hp. Hikers can follow a 2,600-foot wooden boardwalk to a salvaged fire tower where hundreds of wood ducks nest in man-made boxes.

Additionally, there is a shorter three-mile hiking trail through the native pine flat woods that leads to a primitive camping area open on weekends. A list of Georgia’s truly beautiful scenic wonders would not be complete without including the Withlacoochee River. Originating north of Valdosta, it flows south along the Cook County line into Lowndes County, where it is joined by the Little River. Smaller and shaded along its northern branch, but curiously beautiful, the Withlacoochee is one of a handful of Coastal Plain rivers in which limestone ledges form. Another distinctive feature of the river is the occasional white sandbar on the insides of bends – perfect for swimming or primitive camping. The Withlacoochee River flows past the South’s most scenic swamplands, sandcovered beaches and limestone bluffs. A destination for novices and experienced paddlers, it is relatively easy to float. While there are several rapids and quite a few bends, the course is relatively easy to follow. ■

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT Downtown Valdosta This year marks the 32nd anniversary for the Valdosta Main Street Program, however downtown Valdosta is much older than that.

But downtown Valdosta didn’t die as many of the other shopping areas did. Downtown has the power to recreate itself where the others never could recover. What makes downtown different is that it is not just a destination, it’s a community and a lifestyle.

L ea di n g GROWTH Valdosta’s strong local growth comes from growing new business locally and attracting new business and industry to the region.

Entrepreneurship As Georgia’s first official “entrepreneurfriendly city, Valdosta places a high priority on the success and growth of local businesses. The city is a thriving community with an economy balanced for growth, where wages are increasing at a

healthy pace while the costs of living and doing business remain competitive. To help new entrepreneurial businesses thrive, Valdosta will soon be home to a business incubator. A business incubator is just as it sounds – a nurturing environment for startup businesses to grow and thrive. The Chamber, Small Business Development Center and Valdosta State University are working together to determine the best location for a small business incubator for Valdosta. Much more than inexpensive office space, a business incubator provides the high tech-high/touch support that today’s knowledge-based businesses require

for success. Assistance in identifying target markets, conducting competitor intelligence, and getting the day-today support, oversight and advice from experienced business mentors can make the difference in whether a small business makes it past that “magic two-years-inbusiness mark. “If we are going to meet our goal of growing jobs, especially for our technical college and university graduates, most of those jobs are going to come from homegrown entrepreneurs, many of whom are already in business and are ready to go to that next level, said Chamber President Myrna Ballard.

Through the incubator, business owners will also have access to several resources, including the Valdosta State University Small Business Development Center, The Valdosta Small Emerging Business (VSEB) Program and the Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce’s Entrepreneurship Program at the SEEDS Business Resource Center. The Small Business Development Center provides one-on-one counseling, business plan development, classes, internet assistance and networking to service providers, funding sources and an index of federal, state and local resources to small business owners VSEB strives to equip local small businesses with the necessary tools to efficiently compete for government contracts, and to eliminate barriers to entry and build capacity for local small businesses. The SEEDS Business Resource Center provides current economic information for aspiring entrepreneurs, start-up businesses, existing businesses or residents looking for customized market data, industry profiles, demographic reports, competitor information, targeted sales leads and more. competitiveness “through the application of science, technology, and innovation.” It is one of the most comprehensive universitybased programs of business and industry assistance, technology commercialization and economic development in the nation.

Economic growth Valdosta is home to a diverse mix of industry, manufacturing and logistics, and in the last several months has seen over $26 million in capital investments from existing industries creating over 150 new jobs. According to the Georgia County Guide, Lowndes County’s overall retail “pull factor” was the second highest in the entire state. Retail pull measures the regional market draw to a community. Since Valdosta is the county seat as well as the

largest city in Lowndes County with the greatest economic impact and home to more than 80 percent of the businesses located in Lowndes County, Valdosta is credited for these figures. Retail sales in Valdosta/Lowndes County exceed $3 billion annually. As the southernmost county in Georgia, Valdosta has the unique advantage of capitalizing on the economic benefits of Georgia while benefitting from short transportation times to Florida. The cost of doing business in Florida is a tremendous benefit to the local economy. There has been a significant amount of northern business migration. Site Selection magazine named the city the “third hottest metropolitan statistical area in the nation for industrial recruitment and

expansion.” Many of those businesses are coming from Florida. Getting to Valdosta is easy, thanks to the rail lines and I-75 corridor. The infrastructure has propelled Lowndes County’s status as a warehousing and logistics center. Lowe’s recently expanded its regional distribution center in Valdosta by 600,000 square feet to total more than 1.6 million square feet. FedEx also recently expanded its package-processing center by 40,000 square feet. Steeda Autosports, a leading seller of aftermarket parts for Ford Mustang, Focus and pickup trucks, decided to move its manufacturing and engineering division from Pompano Beach, Florida, to a $10 million, 100,000-square-foot facility in Valdosta.

he Valdosta/Lowndes County region is positively abuzz with the sights, sounds and exponential growth of its thriving culture and arts community. A clear commitment to the arts is evident, from the preservation of historical entertainment venues to the cutting-edge art facilities at Valdosta State University. Founded in 1990, the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra contributes to both Valdosta’s culture and Valdosta State University’s academic mission. The orchestra’s membership is an eclectic blend of local residents, faculty members, students and carefully selected professionals from a multi-state region. Supported by a board of directors, the Valdosta Symphony Guild, VSU and corporate and individual patrons, the orchestra has become an integral facet of the cultural and artistic life of the region. The state-of-the-art Valdosta State University Dedo Maranville Fine Arts Gallery is “committed to providing an artistic educational environment that serves a diverse student body and local

audience.” The gallery fills an otherwiseabsent niche in the Valdosta/Lowndes County region as a one-of-a-kind venue for exhibitions showcasing student artwork. Diverse exhibitions serve the entire regional community by providing cultural enrichment and expanded educational opportunities for everyone. Located in the VSU Fine Arts Building, the gallery has recently been completely renovated and updated with high-end lighting, sound and state-of-the-art video systems, climate control, security system and portable walls. The primary venue for visual art in Valdosta is the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts. The 17,000-squarefoot facility offers new exhibits every six weeks in six galleries. The works of local, regional, national and international artists are featured. Its permanent collections include an East African art collection and antique porcelain. The Roberta George Children’s Gallery features art by or for children. Community-centered programs include youth art camps, art classes, yoga and cooking classes.

Opened in 1941, the ‘Dosta Playhouse was a small one-screen movie theater in downtown Valdosta. It is one of only two remaining theaters from the Martin Theatre chain that still stand. After the last movie credits rolled, it was closed for several years, and later served as a furniture warehouse. The local arts center and community members cooperatively raised funds to restore the building to its original state.

The original red marquee was preserved with the theater name standing out in black letters on each side, and neon lights line the marquee. The upstairs bathrooms and projection booth feature unique porthole windows. The historic balcony face bears the Martin Theatre logo in red, gold, and white.

Today the ‘Dosta Theatre is known as the ‘Dosta Playhouse and is home to Theatre Guild Valdosta. The Guild purchased the building in the 1990s and then later bought the adjacent buildings for expansion. The guild produces a total of six shows each year. Dinner is served at the four top

G o v ern m en t Welcome to Valdosta – a city without limits GOVERNMENT

Named Georgia’s first EntrepreneurFriendly Community and Georgia’s first “Cities of Excellence” for being one of the state’s “best managed and most livable cities” for quality-of-life issues, Valdosta is a vibrant and scenic city where southern charm meets 21st century innovation.

Valdosta is the county seat of Lowndes County, Georgia – which also includes the cities of Hahira, Remerton, Lake Park and Dasher – and is the hub for the Valdosta Metropolitan Statistical Area, which was ranked 24th out of 363 MSAs across the country in regard to the health and vitality of locally owned businesses. Smart leadership and policymaking have ensured Valdosta’s continued growth throughout the difficult economic climate.

For the people, by the people The City of Valdosta operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The elected officials are the policy makers who establish a vision for our city, and together they hire the manager to carry out policy and ensure that all citizens are equitably served. The mayor and members of city council invite and encourage the citizens of the City of Valdosta to attend city council meetings whenever possible, because good government depends on the interest and involvement of citizens. City council meetings are held on the first and third Thursday following the first Sunday of each month, at 5:30 p.m., on the second floor of city hall, located at 216 E. Central Ave., in downtown Valdosta.

Customer-centered departments Valdosta’s customer-centered departments continue to effectively communicate with and serve our citizens with accessible leadership and a variety of information tools. Department staff are also partners in the greater community, with our employees investing their time and resources in over three dozen community organizations and nonprofits.

Public information programs, such as the Valdosta City Government 101 Citizens Orientation, provide citizens with information about how city departments operate. Annually, this program puts 25 citizens face-to-face with city leadership in an exchange of information and allows them to tour government facilities. Valdosta 101 is one of several adult and youth education programs hosted by the city – Citizens Police Academy, Citizens Fire Academy and Valdosta Youth Council are other examples – all designed to give citizens of all ages a closer look at their local government. A number of graduates of these programs have utilized their experiences and knowledge gained to pursue public service opportunities, such as serving on local boards and commissions and other public offices.

Its rigorous academic program is based on the teaching and mastery of the foundational skills necessary for academic and personal success. Valwood graduates have earned admission to some of the finest colleges and universities in the country. Valdosta’s Highland Christian Academy is a Christian education institution founded in 1999. Highland Christian Academy exists to “educate and train students to engage their community and world with academic excellence and Christ-like character.” The Academy expects its students to engage their community, nation and world with a “Christ-like character and sharpened intellect.” Georgia Christian School is unique in many ways. The school is located on 36 acres of land with large oak trees and historic buildings. Former students have gone on to become small business owners, engineers, veterinarians, nurses and teachers. Georgia Christian understands that not everyone

wants to attend a four-year college, so it continues to offer a vocational diploma. Its goal is to help their students be prepared for whatever they may choose to do in life. St. John Catholic School has been providing quality education to Valdosta families for more than 70 years. St. John serves not only the Catholic community of South Georgia, but also welcomes students from all races, backgrounds and faiths. From its original enrollment of 34 students to its current enrollment of over 180, it is a leading private educator in the South Georgia region.

Higher education Valdosta State University boasts an enrollment of over 11,000 students from throughout the United States and 67 countries. With more than 100 areas of study and a student-to-faculty ratio of just 18:1, VSU is the perfect combination of advanced education in a laid back setting. The university is located in the heart of Valdosta on more than 160 acres. The campus boasts more than 85 historic buildings and offers student housing, an outdoor art collection, multiple dining halls and a student union featuring meeting space, a theater, game room and food court. Valdosta State University recently signed an agreement with West Georgia Technical College, simplifying the process of student transition between the two institutions of higher education. The Pathways Program agreement will allow West Georgia Technical College students with an Associate of Applied Science in the programs to maximize the transfer of credits in order to complete either a Bachelor of Science in organizational leadership, a Bachelor of Applied Science in human capital performance, or a Bachelor of Science in office administration and technology in two years or less at Valdosta State University.

Wiregrass Technical College campuses in Valdosta, Georgia, Fitzgerald, Douglas and Sparks serve 11 counties in South Georgia. The college’s mission is workforce development and it exists to meet the needs of students and the community through this mission. Wiregrass offers more than 100 programs of study, including credit and noncredit courses and distance learning options, continuing education courses for personal development and economic development courses to meet the professional development of individuals for business and industry. In addition, the college’s adult education program assists students who need to improve their basic skills or obtain their GED. Wiregrass provides students with handson educational experiences designed to prepare them to successfully enter, or to enhance the skills needed to advance in their chosen career. Through partnerships with many four-year colleges and universities, students are able to transfer their associate degree level courses if they choose to continue their formal education. Parents across the 11 counties have saved $2,164,744 in college tuition fees thanks to the Move On When Ready program (MOWR) offered at Wiregrass. MOWR allows high school students to take academic degree-level courses that will transfer to any Technical College System of Georgia or University System of Georgia school, or occupational courses and diploma-level core courses. All college coursework taken through MOWR is fully covered through MOWR funding, and students are required to pay out of pocket for tuition, college fees or textbooks. The only fees students may be responsible for are course-specific fees determined by the college. No hours taken through the MOWR program will count towards a student’s HOPE Grant or Scholarship Caps. ■

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT Valdosta Early College Academy Several years ago, VSU’s College of Education and Human Services collaborated with Valdosta Schools to come up with solutions to address the high drop-out and low college

enrollment rates in the region. The result is known as the Valdosta Early College Academy. The program has received national recognition for excellence in education. The original goal of VECA was to start with

one group of sixth-graders and implement accelerated approaches to their education on VSU’s campus. Each year, two sixth-grade classes are accepted. The intended population for VECA includes low income, first-generation college students with “potential for success.” The students become actual members of the VSU campus community with access to university resources. VECA students are required to be dedicated, hard working and put forth the effort necessary to achieve their potential. “The first two years the students came to the campus and had class,” said Dr. Brian Gerber, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at Valdosta State University who collaborated on the project. “The school buses dropped the kids off right in front of our building, and the kids came in here and spent

oody Air Force Base has been a key facet of the Valdosta/ Lowndes County region and economy for decades. Since its inception in 1941, the base has contributed to the area’s economic development and has become a valuable asset to creating jobs, and improving the economy and labor force within its surrounding communities. Located 30 miles north of the Florida border and 10 miles northeast of the City of Valdosta on Georgia Highway 125, the base opened in 1941 when the U.S. War Department was granted exclusive use of the land by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Valdosta Airfield opened in September 1941 and was renamed Moody Army Airfield that December in honor of Major George Putnam Moody, an early Air Force pioneer who died in the line of duty on May 5, 1941, while serving with the Beech Aircraft Company in Wichita, Kansas. Moody was working on the AT-10 transitional trainers, which were later sent to the air force base.

Lt. Col. Sam Milam, 75th Fighter Squadron commander, taxis his A-10C Thunderbolt II to its new home at Moody Air Force Base, Ga. Aug. 7. This aircraft is the first of approximately 50 upgraded A-10Cs moving to Moody as a part of a base realignment. The move is expected to be complete in early spring 2008 as aircraft are converted from A-10A to A-10C models. (U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt. Parker Gyokeres

Moody AFB is home to the 23rd Wing, which organizes, trains and employs combat-ready A-10Cs, HC-130P/ Js, HH-60Gs, Guardian Angel and support personnel. The wing consists of approximately 5,500 military members and civilians including geographically separated units in Nevada, Florida and Arizona that execute worldwide operations providing close air support and rescue capabilities. With nearly $400 million in positive annual economic impact on the local community, Moody aids in national security as well as the strong financial security necessary for

businesses to thrive. The base accounts for over 5,000 active duty personnel, with their dependents and civilian employees making up another 5,000. Currently, the Air Force’s only low-level ground strike aircraft, are stationed at Moody AFB. In a speech before the Economic Club of Washington, D.C. in February, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter stated that “the A-10 “Warthog” fighter has been “devastating” in its use against ISIS and would be kept for at least another six years pending its replacement with a new aircraft.”

Designed as a “tank buster,” the A-10 entered service in the 1970s to provide air support for ground targets. The Warthogs have been modernized several times over the years, including the addition of autopilot systems, inertial navigation, and a ground collision alert system. In 2014, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel proposed retiring the fleet of tank-killer planes for an estimated savings of over $3 billion over five years. The Department of Defense eventually plans to replace the A-10 with the modern F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. The first A-10s were delivered to Moody Air Force Base in 2007. Approximately 75 “Warthogs” are currently assigned to Moody. ■

At Valdosta Country Club, golf members and guests enjoy 27 challenging holes designed by world-renowned architects Joe Lee and Bobby Weed. The course was carved out of the South Georgia woodlands and pines that once encompassed the Cherokee Plantation during the Civil War. Its three distinctive nines (Bottom, Plantation, Bellemeade) create three challenging 18-hole, par 72 courses using four sets of tees that offer yardages ranging from 5,100 to 6,900 yards providing a challenge for all skill levels.

in 1899 to meet the housing needs of the Strickland Cotton Mill workers, Remerton was later officially incorporated as a mill town. Currently, the preserved houses of the historic village have found new life as shops, restaurants and boutiques.

The 18-hole Francis Lake course at the Francis Lake Golf Club facility in Lake Park, Georgia, features 6,714 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72.

Venture into the past For history buffs, Valdosta’s Crescent House offers informational tours of the historic house and surrounding property. The house joins several others in Valdosta on the national historic register. The house is named for its semi-circular patio supported by 13 columns, representing each of the original American colonies. It is currently the location of the Garden Club of Valdosta. The estate’s grounds boast scenic and fragrant gardens, an octagonal schoolhouse, a small chapel and an activity room. Completely surrounded by the City of Valdosta, Remerton Historic Mill Village is distinctly a town-within-a-town. Built

On stage For those looking to inject a bit of drama into their visit to Valdosta, the Peach State Summer Theater fits the bill. Each summer, a company of about 60 actor-

singers, dancers, technicians, managers and creators reside in Valdosta for a 10-week season. During that time, they rehearse, build and present three musicals in rotating repertory. This summer’s program includes a production of Disney’s “Beauty & the Beast,” “Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” a jazz-infused tale of bootlegging and betrayal set against the backdrop of the Prohibition era.

Shop ‘til you drop Valdosta and the surrounding region offer quick and easy access to a vast array of shopping options. Many tourists are already

Grab a bite After a day of exciting adventures, driving and shopping, fast-food eateries such as Jersey Mike’s Subs, Chik-fil-A and McDonalds offer a variety of dining options to suit any budget or appetite. For those seeking a sit-down meal, Valdosta offers several options that range from casual to upscale. Award-winning Steel Magnolias and Smokin’ Pig BBQ offer traditional southern fare. For those looking for exotic eats, Mori Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar has a hibachi grill as well as a sushi menu. Taverns like The Wooden Nickel Pub offer unique ambiance and spirits.

Covington’s and 306 North are two of Valdosta’s most popular restaurants. Locally owned and operated by the same family for more than 30 years, the restaurants feature a mix of southern sophistication in a casual environment. Using locally-sourced ingredients, owners Stan, Sue and Amy Cox strive to provide great food including fresh produce, cheeses and farm-raised meats. Covington’s also features a catering menu and event planning services. Daily specials include homemade soups and salads.

On the farm To experience life at a slower pace and closer to the earth, plan a visit to Raisin’ Cane, a produce market and agri-tourism business located in Lowndes County. The market hosts fresh, local produce, fresh baked breads, casseroles and many other food and gift items. Raisin’ Cane is a family effort of the Ken Corbett family. Ken and Kim Corbett operate a farm in Lake Park. Their three children all work full-time for the family farm as well. Visitors to Raisin’ Cane will “experience agriculture” by touring a real working farm and learning where their food comes from. There are also many activities for families to enjoy at Raisin’ Cane, including hay rides, a corn maze, Little-ville and farm animals. ■

In fact, more than 60 percent of Valdosta residents live within walking distance of a park. Valdosta features three golf course communities that are quite popular with both retirees and young families. Twenty years ago, a team of architects and planners transformed a cattle ranch into a residential utopia with 700 beautiful homes situated against an idyllic backdrop including a lake and an 18-hole golf course lined with mossdraped live oaks. Although it’s located right off I-75, Stone Creek feels like an island paradise. Residents enjoy golfing and fishing without having to leave the neighborhood. For those who appreciate tradition, the smooth rhythm and deep roots of the century-old Valdosta Country Club are irresistible. Sports like golf and swimming in the Olympic-sized pool, as well as

socializing, have always been mainstays of the community. With the club’s emphasis on family and enduring focus on modernization, living at the Valdosta Country Club feels as fresh and welcome as a cold one at the golfers’ grill after a long day on the links. Kinderlou Forest is a modern and luxurious gated community offering both expansiveness and quality in homes and amenities. Shaded streets lined with beautiful homes surround an 18-hole championship golf course designed by PGA professional Davis Love III.

Valdosta’s treasured history and community spirit ensure that whether it’s a college student in need of an apartment within walking distance to VSU, a family seeking a friendly neighborhood, or a retiree searching for the perfect round of golf, the Valdosta region offers it. Friendly and affordable, Valdosta, Georgia is a great place for everyone to call home. â–

he word “community” implies people living together: unified in their commitment toward common goals. This implied definition of community exemplifies the culture of faith and worship in Valdosta and the surrounding regions. Dr. Bob Moon assumed the duties of pastor at First United Methodist Church in Valdosta in 2009. Born in India to United Methodist missionary parents, Moon said his Indian education also carries over into his personal ideology and sermons: “Growing up overseas, I have always been convinced we need to break down racial and denominational barriers.”

Rabbi Moshe Elbaz leads one of only a few synagogues left in the southeastern U.S. Temple Israel serves most of the Jewish community in Southern Georgia. While the congregation consists primarily of Conservative and Reform Jews, the Rabbi was educated in the Orthodox tradition, which makes this the temple unique. Although Valdosta has had Jewish settlers since 1841, it was not until the early 20th century that a Jewish community was formally established. The whole community threw its weight behind several fundraising ideas, and in 1919 construction began on the first Temple Israel. The building was dedicated in 1920. Since its inception, Temple Israel has maintained an active presence in the Valdosta community. The original Temple Israel stood for almost 40 years until the new and modern Temple Israel was built in 1960.

Women have been at the foundation of the Valdosta Jewish community throughout history. Jewish women raised enough money for the first synagogue to be built, and maintain the temple and its grounds. Temple Israel currently has its largest congregation to date. It has become one of the few places for families in smaller surrounding towns to attend holy days and participate in the Jewish community. In a pure example of the culture and pluralism of Valdosta, worshipers of diverse faiths gather under the blazing

Georgia sun every May in Valdosta for an interfaith worship. Last year’s gathering began with a spiritual on the guitar by Nephtali Santiago. Next, speakers representing a variety of beliefs offered prayers on a common theme of unity. Dr. Theresa Thompson of the local Buddhist Tibetan study group explained how the prayers of Buddhism are for “all sentient beings.” Rabbi Moshe Elbaz of Temple Israel sang a prayer in Hebrew. “We come to this event because we recognize that before we are anything else ... we are all human,” said the Rev. Floyd Rose of Serenity Church. The City of Valdosta is a multi-faceted mosaic pieced together by the history, culture, experiences, and beliefs of many people. Going forward, Valdosta seeks to strengthen the diversity that reveals its inherent beauty. Deacon David Lasseter of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church said he could “remember when such an interfaith gathering would have been impossible, in days of not only hatred but ignorance.” ■

he Valdosta/Lowndes County region has several dedicated local initiatives, organizations and programs in place to promote the beautification and increase the energy efficiency of the surrounding communities. The City of Valdosta offers curbside recycling service in addition to weekly trash collection. Valdosta was also named Georgia’s “Smart Energy Municipality of the Year” by the Technology Association of Georgia for its “consistent energy saving initiatives and efforts to serve its residents and promote economic growth through sustainable and smart energy.” For example,

Valdosta offers two compressed natural gas pump stations available for trucks utilizing this clean-energy source. Keep Lowndes/Valdosta Beautiful (KLVB) organizes a number of cleanups and recycling events throughout the year. Its signature event is The Great American Cleanup, a community improvement and litter prevention program held in the spring. The organization also will participate in two cleanup days for the annual Make-A-Difference Day. Rivers Alive is Valdosta’s annual fall volunteer waterway cleanup event that targets all waterways in the region,

including rivers, lakes, streams, beaches and wetlands, and is sponsored by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division Outreach Program. Children learn how their waste affects the earth and how they can help at the annual Magic of Recycling program, a highlight of KLVB’s annual fall electronics recycling program. The show, which coincides with America Recycles Day, draws about 5,000 local students. The City of Valdosta Public Works Department hosts two annual electronics recycling events that provide citizens with a simple solution to dispose of broken and outdated electronics. Annually, the city collects around 30,000 pounds of electronics. Since the inception of the e-cycling events in 2006, the city has diverted over 240 tons of electronic waste from landfills. ■
