Mayor Welcome Sycamore (the home of the penny parking meter) welcomes you: As the new Mayor of Sycamore, I want to welcome you to the quaint town of Sycamore. You will find it to be a historic town with a lot to offer. While visiting Sycamore you will find everything a person would want to find in shopping, sightseeing, dining or a leisure trip. I would like to suggest a few things that make Sycamore a great place to see! Midwest Museum of Natural History – The museum features geology and anthropology exhibits, live animals, hands-on interactive programming and a world-class collection of mounted animals from around the world, including one of the few mounted African elephants. Sycamore History Museum – The Sycamore History Museum includes exhibits, research archives and a collection dedicated to preserving Sycamore’s past and present for the future. The rotating award-winning exhibits are

especially designed to showcase the history and contributions that has shaped the City of Sycamore. Sycamore Public Library – Sycamore Public Library, a historic cornerstone of the city, began in 1892, and opened its current location in 1905 with a contribution from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation. It has undergone several renovations and is now an active modern library that offers all forms of media and programs for its users, young and old. Joiner History Room – The Joiner History Room is found in the Sycamore Public Library, and is the site of preserved history documents for DeKalb County. Their records include Civil War papers, newspaper files, old photographs and numerous boxes of manuscript materials. Historic Sycamore Train Depot- the Historic Sycamore Train Depot was built by the Chicago and Northwestern as a railway station in 1865. It served as railway spur for many years. It has recently been converted to serve the community with meeting rooms, offices and a gathering place.

DeKalb County Courthouse – the DeKalb County Courthouse has had several locations. The current courthouse was built in 1906. It has been the site of several movies, has had a recent renovation and addition. “There is not a building in the state that is better adapted, more substantially built, or furnished in better taste” stated the Sycamore Prospectus, comparing the courthouse today and in 1906. Dining and Shopping – Sycamore’s dining and shopping are among the things that make Sycamore a quaint place. This book is overflowing with ideas and places to shop and dine. I hope you will take the time to browse, stroll and enjoy all of the great opportunities in Sycamore! As the new mayor, I welcome you to Sycamore and hope your time here is enjoyable. We hope you will return often and remember that “Life does offer more in Sycamore”. Curt Lang Mayor of Sycamore

SYCAMORE Bike, Walking Paths

R

ecognizing the value of improving the parks system and helping residents improve their quality of life, Sycamore is developing a safe, environmentally friendly way to travel by constructing new bicycling and walking paths through the community. The first phase of the trail project will connect Route 23 near the Sycamore Middle School to the Brickville Road parking area that accesses trails to Leon Larson and Sycamore Lake Parks. This asphalt trail segment will add a safe walking and biking corridor to Sycamore Middle School and will play an integral piece of a larger countywide plan to connect the Great Western Trail trailhead to Old Mill Park. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in spring 2018. The total cost of the phase one trail project is $790,750, which included a local match provided by the park district, an IDOT transportation grant and $20,000 awarded to the district as a DeKalb County Community Foundation’s Community Needs Grant. Developing a trail system was found to be the top need within the community when the Sycamore Park District began Vision 2020, an effort to identify the long-term needs. Following passage of a successful referendum in 2014, Vision 2020 then became Action 2020, a plan to accomplish these needs. Other elements to the plan includes a community center, dog park, splashpad, sled hill, sports complex expansion and a new irrigation system for the Sycamore Park District Golf Club.

The trail connection was first identified within the DeKalb County Greenways and Trails Coalition County Plan. The grassroots coalition was started by citizens in 2003 who were concerned for the future land use in DeKalb County and wanted to address the issues of land, trail and green space development in a county experiencing rapid growth and change. Developing a comprehensive countywide trails and greenway plan, the plan provides valuable information that is used in city, village and county planning efforts including park district, forest preserve and Illinois Department of Natural Resources properties. With the support of the DeKalb County Community Foundation, the trail project has become a community effort. Through an easement, the Sycamore School District donated the land. The park district is overseeing development of the trail, and the city is taking responsibility for the safe crossing at Brickville Road parking area. Park district staff plans to work with the school district and ENCAP Inc. to identify and implement hands-on learning opportunities for middle school students in the newly established natural areas along the trail. “We find working with some of the other government and nonprofit agencies in town we can use those tax dollars more wisely and accomplish more things together,” said Sarah Rex, recreation and marketing supervisor for the Sycamore Park District. “We both have the goal of having solid trails and alternate transportation options.” Rex said expanding the trails system through the community will allow the park

district to put more in Sycamore, making it easier to access the city’s parks and provide recreational and wellness opportunities to residents. Expanding its trail system also will further promote sustainable behaviors, encouraging residents to go walking or biking, which is good for the environment and good for them, she added. “It connects people to our parks and connects people to our facilities. It will help people get to the golf course or the pool more easily and more safely than off-road trails,” she said. These trails also will help provide alternate transportation to businesses, parks, friends and family as well as places of employment. “It’s kind of an indirect collaboration with some of the local businesses, getting people downtown. We’d love to someday incorporate signs that bring people from the Great western Trail to our trails and to our downtown,” she said. There are many wish lists trails that the Sycamore Park District has to create more connections. Rex said DeKalb County Alternate Transportation Committee, which is made up of representatives from DeKalb County, the DeKalb and Sycamore park districts, the cities and other organizations that promote healthy living is working to identity new trails as well as improvements to existing trails. “Everyone agrees this is important to our community members and it’s a big push now to get our trails connected and offer them to the residents,” she said. 

BUSINESS PROFILE

Taxco Jesus Romero has served the Sycamore community for 25 years, not only providing home-cooked Mexican cuisine, but also giving his time to the community that has welcomed him. At age 17, Romero, who was born in Mexico, first came to the United States and began working for his uncle at Taxco Restaurant in Chicago. He worked at several other restaurants before his uncle offered him a job at the Sycamore location in 1992. Named after Taxco de Alarcon, a town nestled in the mountains of Guerrero state between Mexico City and Acapulco, the Taxco restaurant prides itself on providing homecooked Mexican cuisine, including handmade tortillas and guacamole, made fresh at a diner’s table. “It’s very important to me to show that everything is homemade,” Romero said. “Sometimes it takes a little longer to prepare the meal but it is because we make sure every dish is made with love and to provide the best food that we can.” Romero said among the dishes they offer, many love the enchiladas. One version, the Enchilada Mexicana reminds him of home: tortillas dipped in guajillo sauce, filled with meat or cheese and topped with lettuce, tomatoes, queso fresco and avocado. Diners also enjoy the enchilada featuring a homemade mole, which requires 24 ingredients. Other popular entrees include the variety of tacos and the shrimp quesadillas. But he also is finding inspiration whether it be something he ate at a restaurant within Mexico or asking his mom or his aunt what they may be preparing at home and incorporating those flavors into the specials.

“I want to go back to my roots and bring back the regional dishes that I was eating when I was a little kid or that my family is eating at the moment,” he said. Taxco also is known to provide Illinois’ largest selection of tequila, offering 400 varieties. Romero said providing this large selection and hosting tequila tastings and dinners gives them an opportunity to educate their diners. “I always recommend when customers come to Taxco it’s learning what they like to drink and hopefully finding a tequila they will like without having to spend a lot of money,” he said. When Romero first came to Sycamore, he credits so many within the community who supported him, such as providing classes to improve his English and earn his GED at Kishwaukee College, as well as those who supported his family. He said he wanted to give back to the community that embraced him and is willing to give everyone a hand. “I realized there were many organizations that were there for me when I needed it, and I feel it is only fair to give back to the community that did so much for me and my family. I feel it’s only fair for me to do a little of my part for other people who might need a little help as well,” he said. “I always say investing in your community is the best investment you can do in your lifetime because every one of us can do our part to make our community better. We all want to live in a nice place. It takes a community, a village, to really embrace and work together to keep it that way.” Romero has volunteered with many organizations including the Sycamore Jaycees, Sycamore Kiwanis, the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce and Court Appointed Special

Advocate (CASA) of DeKalb County among others. Possibly among his most notable work was creating a cultural staple that has raised thousands of dollars for community causes, the Cinco de Mayo festival. He recalls thinking the first event was disorganized, but he was surprised to see the positive reception as 200 to 500 people came to his restaurant that could only seat 60. For 20 years, collaborating with local nonprofits, sponsors and volunteers, Romero has built the festival into a community event featuring Mexican music and dance, children’s activities and food. And, this year’s festival raised close to $16,000, with half the proceeds going toward an endowment fund for Kishwaukee College scholarships. The rest was donated to local nonprofit organizations that participated in the festival. Romero said because various nonprofits host booths at the festival, the event also has become an opportunity for people to learn more about these groups that exist within their community. “Now they can benefit, or they can learn how they can get involved to help and give back,” he said. Marking 25 years in Sycamore and becoming a part of the community, Jesus said, has been a wonderful feeling that he is grateful for. “I’ve seen so many customers first come in when they were little kids and now they are married and come into the restaurant. I remember one customer would come in as a teenager and I had the opportunity to cater the wedding,” he said. “It’s really a great feeling to be in Sycamore and to all the customers who have been so great to us and loyal to support our business.” w

BUSINESS PROFILE

Ideal Industries For 100 years, Ideal Industries has developed a successful formula, committing to develop new innovations and fostering relationships with customers, employees, business partners and the community. This fourth-generation family-run company has been led by the values instilled by their founder, J. Walter Becker, who started the company in Chicago. Dave Juday, grandson of Becker who served as chairman over 40 years, said his grandfather chose the company’s name not because he thought it was an ideal company. “What he learned was that if he was going to be successful in business, the key was going to be an ideal set of relationships, with his customers, with his suppliers and with his community. If he had those relationships, then he would be successful,” he said. In 1924, the company made the move to Sycamore because Becker believed in the importance of building these relationships and felt a small town provided a better environment for the company to realize its vision. Jim James, who currently serves as Ideal Industries’ chairman and CEO, said there are several factors that continue to make Sycamore an attractive location. The first is an intimate relationship with the education system. Because Ideal is such a prominent business within the community and has such a global footprint, James said Ideal is attractive to area college and high school students. Ideal works with these schools to give them opportunities, James said; last year, 31 students served internships. When building new facilities, the company has received support from the City to complete the work in a timely manner. And, the access to recruit quality individuals, whether it’s for production positions or management has been incredible, James

said. Currently, Ideal Industries employees 600 individuals in the area.

“The traits they possess, being located in that area, their work ethic is just incredible,” he said. Juday said there are fundamentals in Sycamore, and if they can build that, they can have a symbiotic relationship between the company and the community that will be good for everyone. That led to his action to create a 238-acre business park, which has attracted additional companies to come to Sycamore and has brought 1,000 jobs to the village. “His foresight to attract other companies to the community has brought in quality jobs,” James added. Known as a premier manufacturer of products that serve professional tradesmen including electricians, plumbers, auto mechanics and general maintenance mechanics, Ideal’s mission is to build quality products and services for those customers. While Ideal has grown to feature operations in 27 countries, about 80 percent of products they sell are manufactured in the United States, James added. Ideal may best be known for their wire connectors, but their innovations also can be found on nearly every commercial jet, which has been constructed using Ideal brand tools to connect and secure their electrical systems. Their products also are part of the critical equipment on NASA missions. Their Audacy advanced wireless lighting system is installed at major league ballparks, college campuses and airports. The company is now working to develop an innovation that will change the way individuals charge devices, such as tablets, phones and computers. “We think this idea will go into the personal homes with the way they plug their lights

in and they charge their devices and power their TVs and computers. These are things we see are big opportunities,” he said. Innovation is not only about designing new products, but also developing best practices to improve efficiency, find new customers, and keep employee retention rates up. The family reinvests 90 cents of every dollar to fund innovation projects and develop programs for its employees. The company contributes to educational expenses for those who wish to pursue advanced degrees, a benefits package and more. Operating a family-run company for 100 years is not common as less than three percent of these companies make it to the fourth generation. But Juday admits he does not think about reaching this milestone. What is important is remembering every individual generation will need to solve new problems, and there is no solution or model that will serve every time. But what continues to serve the company well and will always be a focus among the family and its employees is living the values, such as to treat others fairly, that every generation has understood and demonstrated. This will provide them the opportunities to succeed. “Do I think about living our values and the answer is yes, every day. The thing we have to be careful is that we don’t think 100 years is a proxy for success,” he said. James said reaching this milestone says they’re doing a lot of things right. “The family is doing a lot of things right, and if we see another 100 years, it means we’re doing things right. I think we’re more focused on doing things right and the milestones will come,” he said. w

ome into Sycamore’s historic downtown, and you’ll be treated to a fun shopping experience, enjoying the historic buildings lining each street, the parking prices that are a blast from the past and businesses run by individuals who want to provide a unique item to bring home.

Whimsical Perspective Laura Bright loves to give a new look to furniture and larger home items, calling the pieces a big coloring book. Refinishing and painting each one to become a unique work of art, she first showcased the transformation on her blog. But one day she and husband Ron hoped to share these pieces in their own store and knew Sycamore would be where they’d want to go. “We enjoy the hometown feeling of Sycamore. I knew I wanted to open a shop here,” she said. “I wanted the opportunity to walk to my store and bring something to Sycamore that they didn’t have yet. This is more a home decor, gift shop with a funky whimsical edge.” Opening Whimsical Perspective in March 2017, Laura said they have been blessed to see regular customers, who are outfitting their homes and see the store as their source for inspiration.

She also loves to continue hearing the gasp of customers who come the first time. “They open the door and say, ‘Ah, it’s so cute.’ I love it. It’s exactly like that. They gasp. It’s so funny. I want to keep hearing it over and over, so I want to try to keep it fresh,” she said. Laura chooses quality, older furniture that needs a cosmetic lift, heirlooms that will become a focal piece. Using chalk paint, she designs a piece multiple ways. Her favorite is the rubbed off, comfortable look, but if she’s feeling modern or colorful, a piece can go that way too. “That’s the great thing about painting furniture is every piece you can do a little differently because you don’t want it to look like the one you did before,” she said. Laura sees more for Whimsical Perspective, working with community groups and local artists, who may add displays, and hoping the store can evolve as a go-to not only for shoppers in Sycamore, but also a broader area. But beyond her shop, Laura has hopes to bring more to the historic community, too. “I have grand plans for a French market or a pop-up flea market in the future. These are grand events I’d love to host for Sycamore to give them a different experience,” she said. “We’ll just see what I can get done.”

Sycamore Antiques Longtime Sycamore residents, Ann and her husband, Jim Tucker, had been working with antiques many years, primarily working in malls across the Chicago area. Then, an opportunity arose to open their own store seven years ago in downtown Sycamore. Ann said what she loves about Sycamore is it’s quaint, from the parking meters, which charge a penny for 12 minutes and a dime for two hours, and the historic buildings, theirs built in 1870. “It’s the county seat, so it’s always busy. There’s always something going on. There’s always people walking around. All we do is hang a

new, either an item someone brings in to sell or something they discovered traveling to auctions, antique malls or visiting someone’s home. “We’re open Wednesday through Saturdays. The other days we’re always looking to keep the inventory up and price it to sell,” she said.

flag outside and put a few small things on the sidewalk and it brings traffic.” Inside their store are antiques for every interest. Discover books, costume jewelry, clocks, original fine art and a Christmas tree filled yearround with ornaments. There are the items that give a history lesson like rotary dial phones and typewriters. And sometimes they have an item for an unusual request. Ann recalled one person came looking for items about Abraham Lincoln. They had a perfume bottle made out of a copper penny. And the store always features something

Roseanne explains using Rich’s expertise as a graduate gemologist, the core of Sweet Earth is jewelry repair and design. He has since trained staff, including Roseann, to repair fashion jewelry and have expanded to offer jewelrymaking classes. Trying to stay with the trends, they also offer Himalayan salt electric lamps and gem specimens. “Because we have a department filled with parts and pieces, we’re able to do unusual things and create fashion jewelry,” she added.

The couple, who have operated in Sycamore 23 years, pride themselves on offering a personalized touch, providing engraving on various items, such as creating customized awards for area businesses. “The bulk of our engraving is for everyday customers whether we are doing a plaque, a wine bottle to commemorate an anniversary or champagne glasses for a wedding. We have over 1,000 charms in stock,” she said. But Roseanne adds their store is becoming more than jewelry. Like other retailers, they are focused on branching out, increasing women’s and men’s accessories, Melissa and Doug toys and home decor. They also enjoy sharing local pride including Sycamore Spartan gear and gym uniforms, as well as Northern Illinois University jewelry. “We have charm bracelets that were started for young girls who are now grown adults and are now bringing in their own daughters. We have a wonderful customer base, and they even bring us treats sometimes,” she said. “That’s one of the keys of being in business is always being in business for the long term, It’s not about making the dollar today. It’s about providing good customer service and being kind to people. Everything else will happen after that.” w

P

roviding a family-friendly environment, which offers good schools, a vibrant downtown and job opportunities, Sycamore is continuing a trend to welcome new residents and offer more housing opportunities. “When people talk about moving to Dekalb County, Sycamore is probably the number one town that they’re looking for,” said Nancy Edwards, broker and owner of Elm Street Realtors in Sycamore. Edwards said in addition to offering a variety of shops and restaurants downtown, what makes Sycamore attractive is the variety of events throughout the year that brings everyone together, such as the ladies night out, turning back time car show and Pumpkin Fest. “It’s really a friendly atmosphere among the whole community,” she said. Another attraction to Sycamore is the city’s continued focus on maintaining and improving its infrastructure. The City is focusing funds to repair streets, sidewalks, and parking lots as well as replacing the city’s water main and expanding its sewer treatment plant. Sycamore’s population was counted at 17,600 in 2010, but the amount of building activity in recent years suggests that number could be on the rise. John Sauter, the city’s director of building and engineering, said 50 permits for single-family homes and four permits for multifamily homes with a total of 16 units were issued in Sycamore in 2016. This number falls in line with 2015, when 49 permits for single-family homes and nine permits for multifamily homes with a total of 26 units were issued. There have been 22 single-family homes permitted in Sycamore since May 31.

Sauter said Sycamore should average 50 to 60 single-family homes a year over the next few years based on current trends, although many unexpected factors can affect development. Alison Rosenow, broker with American Realty, said Sycamore offers townhomes and condos under $100,000, which attract first-time homebuyers as well as investors looking for rental opportunities. For someone looking for single-family homes, these range from $100,000 to $220,000, which Rosenow said because of low inventory right now are in high demand. Currently, many homes that are put on the market are selling within a week. For those who are working to sell homes within Sycamore, Rosenow said she has seen the average market list price continue to grow as the city continues to rebound from the nationwide housing recession near 2007-2008. The average list price in 2014 was $171,000, which has grown to an average this year of $215,000, she noted. Sycamore has many available lots for development, such as Parkside Estates, North Grove Crossings, Camden Crossing and Heron Creek Country Estates. “We represent three builders, and we have right now seven houses going up between the three builders,” Edwards said. “They are scheduled to go up this year and a couple of them are actually sold already.” As the housing market continues to bounce back, Rosenow expects in the future that many current and new developers will come to build and offer more housing options within Sycamore. “As we see these vacant lots fill up, there may be an opportunity for a big builder to come into town, who will buy acreage and plan a subdivision and increase more activity in the area,” she said. w

“Our goals are to provide them opportunities in which they can learn not only core curriculum but also to learn about career pathways, to learn to provide service to others, to be good citizens and to appreciate those people around them and those in their community, said Kathy Countryman, superintendent at District 427. Within District 427, there are five elementary schools, each focused on fostering high academic expectations to challenge students while also offering support to be successful. Students are encouraged to problem solve, persevere and collaborate.

At North Elementary, it is important that students feel connected to their school, feel confident in themselves and feel respected as an important part of their school and community. Each student is special, can make a difference and has the right to discover and pursue their passions.

interdisciplinary units. These units make connections between subjects to help students see that all areas of school are related. The teams allow for a more personal approach to learning, better teacher and parent communication, closer communication between teachers and greater flexibility in scheduling.

South Prairie Elementary also puts value on working with the community. The school hosts meetings for Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, and the Sycamore Park District holds a variety of activities at the school, including youth athletics and dance as well as adult fitness classes. The school also hosts two raised garden beds for the DeKalb County Community Gardens.

The middle school also strives to provide many learning opportunities. This means not only providing a rich curriculum, but also letting students explore their talents in music, technology, careers, industrial tech, art and health. Various after school activities also help students further develop their personal interests and talents.

At Sycamore Middle School, their core philosophy is teaming. Each team develops its identity, adopts a community service project and a core value and works to develop

Sycamore High School Principal Tim Carlson said for his students, their world could mean going off to college, going to a technical school or going to the workforce.

Start here. Go anywhere. Go everywhere. Or stay local. At Kish, your path is your own.

Where will you go?

That means not only getting the kids ready academically, but also teaching what he calls soft skills, teaching them how they need to act in a work environment. Working with area businesses, the school offers senior academies, including business, agriculture, manufacturing, education and health.

conducted summer field research with a university professor, completed universitylevel research and presented to university faculty.

“One of the biggest issues we hear talking to the business community is teaching kids soft skills, how to act and interact with adults, shaking someone’s hand, looking someone in the eye, how to dress appropriately. Beyond the academic part, we’re trying to prepare them to join the workforce and function well in that workforce,” Carlson said.

Working closely with many within the community, Countryman said the district focuses on giving opportunities outside the classroom walls.

The effort has been successful, he noted, adding three students were offered manufacturing jobs after graduation. The high school hopes to expand academies, offering logistics and hospitality and tourism. As the staff looks toward the future, they also want to offer students ways to be more creative and engaging. One way was partnering with Northern Illinois University to offer an environmental science class where kids

“It’s a teacher thinking differently rather than the traditional and engaging kids at a very high level,” he said.

“Our community is very open to those mentorships, and our business community is amazing in support of our students, not only financially in offering scholarships but through networking and mentorship,” she said. Countryman said they want the reputation of the school district to be one that all of our community members can be proud of. “We want to continue our community partnerships, not only with the chamber, elected officials and service organizations, so we are all pulling together to make Sycamore a great place,” she said. w

Built in 1905 with a donation from Andrew Carnegie, the Sycamore Public Library still stands in its original splendor among the city’s historic downtown. For 112 years, the Sycamore Library has been offering a safe, comfortable place to encourage curiosity and foster imagination through exceptional customer service, dynamic programming and a locally responsive collection. Library leaders believe that all of Sycamore will find value in its offerings, and staff strive to provide service that exceeds patrons’ expectations. Last year alone the library welcomed over 125,000 patrons through its doors and circulated over 226,000 items. Some of its most popular materials include books, audio books, e-books, music CDs and DVDs. Library staff is constantly striving to provide patrons with the newest and most exciting selection available. While some may think of the library as a traditional storeroom of dusty books, it is so much more. The Sycamore Library happily offers relevant programming for all ages, the latest popular materials for reading, viewing and listening; as well as a historic yet modernized space to work, relax and study with public computers and complimentary Wi-Fi. Through trained staff and local partnerships, the library is committed to providing the community with an extraordinary experience that surpasses their expectations.

orthwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital serves Sycamore and surrounding communities by providing a broad range of health care services with sensitivity to the individual needs of patients and their families. Nationally recognized as a leader in quality and patient safety, Northwestern Medicine delivers evidence-based care that is effective, safe, timely and convenient to ensure consistent, excellent patient outcomes.

highest level of academic medicine and research from a community hospital setting,” said Jay Anderson, president of Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee and Northwestern Medicine Valley West Hospitals. “Our specialists at Kishwaukee and Valley West Hospitals communicate with colleagues across the system to ensure our patients are receiving world-class and innovative care close to home.” Kishwaukee Hospital’s Joint Center is the first in Illinois to receive the Joint Commission’s Gold

including a breast cancer program. Treatment plans are tailored to meet each patient’s needs; and patient navigators help patients coordinate care between multiple specialists and locations to avoid unnecessary travel. In February 2017, the nationally-ranked Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute expanded to Kishwaukee Hospital. Prevention, diagnostic, emergency and nonemergency cardiac catheterization and other cardiovascular interventional procedures are now offered at Kishwaukee Hospital. Patients now have a seamless pathway to access advanced specialty cardiovascular care and clinical trials offered within the health system. “We are continually exploring opportunities to enhance the patient experience, quality of care, and safety for the communities we serve,” Anderson said. Northwestern Medicine works closely with community partners, including community health centers, to identify priority health concerns and jointly develop community-based health initiatives designed to address health care disparities. The most recent Community Health Needs Assessment for the DeKalb County area identified three priority areas: cancer, cardiovascular disease and maternal child health.

Since opening in 1975, Kishwaukee Hospital in nearby DeKalb has grown to a 98-bed acute-care facility with more than 150 physician members representing nearly every specialty and a staff of more than 1,500. With more than 25 sites of care in the local area and a total of more than 100 sites across the Chicago area, Northwestern Medicine continues to develop new ways to better serve the health care needs of local communities. “As a member of Northwestern Medicine, we have the unique ability to provide access to the

Seal of Approval for Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Knee Replacement. The hospital has achieved better outcomes by utilizing research-based best-practices, preoperative educational training, a personal coach and a Joint Center Coordinator to guide the process of a joint replacement. Most patients experience a one-day hospital stay, discharged directly to their home rather than a nursing facility, and are up and walking more than 300 feet the morning after surgery with the ability to once again fully extend their knee. Kishwaukee Hospital’s comprehensive cancer center, which opened in 2010, offers medical and radiation oncology, hematology, participation in clinical trials, social services, massage therapy, nutrition counseling and support groups. Since joining Northwestern Medicine, new treatments, providers and specialties have been added,

In response to the needs assessment, Kishwaukee Hospital’s Breastfeeding Center opened a human milk depot. Here, preapproved mothers can provide donor breast milk to help save the lives of premature and sick babies. It is one of the first four locations of its kind in Illinois. Kishwaukee Hospital was recently recognized as a Baby-Friendly Hospital by Baby-Friendly USA for its efforts to improve the health of women and children through education, support and promotion of breastfeeding during pregnancy, the hospital stay and after mother and baby go home. Another example of programs developed by Kishwaukee Hospital to increase community wellness and prevention is the Leishman Center. The center offers plant-based cooking classes designed to promote a healthier lifestyle through nutrition as well as Eat to Beat classes, which focus on prevention of chronic conditions or disease where the focus is food as medicine. Kids can learn kitchen skills, make healthy recipes and how to incorporate physical activity into daily lives at the Kids Can Cook program. With an eye to future needs of the community, Kishwaukee Hospital is currently constructing a $46 million health and wellness center. The 72,500-square-foot fitness area will include an indoor track, weight and abdominal training, therapeutic pools, a child care area and other services. It is scheduled to be completed by the fall 2018. w
