Skokie has been named one of America’s top 100 places to live by Livability.com, a website that ranks quality of life of America’s small and mid-sized cities. Skokie is among very few Illinois communities to rank on the list. Therefore, it is no wonder that families flock to and enjoy one of the fastest growing suburbs in the United States, according to Money magazine. Add to that the fact that the village recently made significant enhancements to the community, including a $9 million infrastructure investment in downtown Skokie, and you have a winning combination for both kids and adults. Skokie could easily be nicknamed “Tree City.” The greenery parades down many of its streets of colonials, ranches and Chicago-style bungalows. Safe, clean and environmentally friendly neighborhoods dot the landscape. From great neighborhoods to great schools, Skokie is a standout community. There are public, private and parochial educational opportunities. Primary school students are served by six K-8 school districts in Skokie. The majority of Skokie high school students attend Niles North or Niles West. Nationally recognized for academic excellence, both schools have been cited among the countries best by Newsweek and US News & World Report. The Kennedy Center for Performing Arts recognized Niles Township High Schools for having the top arts education program in the US. The Skokie Park District offers a plethora of excitement. In fact, the district is a past winner of the “National Gold
Medal for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management.” Its 240 acres of parkland offer countless recreational opportunities for the more than 65,000 residents of Skokie and others throughout the Chicagoland area. Activities include tennis, rowing, indoor skating, a nature center, golf, fitness and two water parks. In addition to its diverse array of programs and special events, the Skokie Park District also offers summer camps, statelicensed full-day childcare and preschool, and before- and afterschool care for grades K-5. The park district offers many seasonal community special events. Families can participate in the award-winning Skokie Festival of Cultures, Skokie’s Backlot Bash music and street festival, Winter Chilly Fest, a July 4th 3-D Fireworks Festival, the Scream Scene haunted house, the World Wiffle Ball Championship and many more activities. The family that reads together stays together and the award winning Skokie Public Library is all about togetherness. However, reading is not its only gig. It also offers performances, workshops, art exhibits, etc. under the roof of its 133,000-square-foot facility. The library’s Bookmobile service is a mobile library that brings books, DVDs and more to locations throughout Skokie five days a week. The second floor Computer Commons and adjacent Computer Classroom offer internet access, scanning stations, Microsoft Office and printing options. There is a separate computer lab for children.
