INTRODUCTION

COMMUNITY BANKING AT ITS BEST! For most banks, success is about how many accounts they can open, how quickly they can move customers through the teller line, or how many loans they can close. We’re different than most. And, we have different measures of success. Did we do all we could to make every customer interaction a pleasant one? Are we making this community better? Are we making a difference to this area? These are lofty goals, but they are ones we’re always striving for because, as a true community bank, we know these are our responsibilities. You’ll get great financial tools when you bank with us, but we don’t stop there. We’re more than just a bank.

ELCOME TO THE NEW EASTSIDE! It is a pleasure W to bring you the first edition of the annual New Eastside Community Guide. Representing a combined effort between local businesses, community groups and the New Eastside News, this unique resource unites our community like never before.

As one of Chicago’s most rapidly developing areas, New Eastside is an oasis of urban living. It is a place where landmark towers rise in one of the nation’s most advanced and acclaimed communities, and where businesses flock to meet the demands of a New Eastside population that has surged over the last decade. New Eastside News is the most trusted news resource and we are dedicated to promoting information sharing throughout the entire New Eastside community. This guide provides everything you need to know about living in and getting around the New Eastside. Learn about the history of New Eastside and discover the wealth of community and business resources that serve the area.

We are nearly 3,500 community and commercial bankers, home loan officers, financial advisors and specialty lenders focused solely on our customers and the communities where they live. We all have the same mission: To provide best-in-class financial services to all of our customers, be the local alternative to the big banks, and to improve the communities which we call home.

PEDWAY

Metra Millennium Station, E. Randolph St., Chicago, Il 60601

The downtown pedestrian walkway system, known as the Chicago Pedway, is a system of underground tunnels and bridges that connect buildings, stores and train stations. It is a convenient pathway to use during inclement weather to walk from New Eastside to the central Loop. Many dining options exist in the New Eastside Pedway as well as resources such as the post office and courier companies FedEx and UPS.

CTA Lines Accessible from Randolph and Wabash or Clark and Lake stations.

CAR SHARING Enterprise CarShare (formerly I-Go) and Zipcar car sharing services, offer cars at 12 residential and commercial parking lots throughout the New Eastside.

Aqua Pedway (Pedway Level) 225 N. Columbus Dr. • Chicago, Il, 60601 Hours Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Saturday, 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday* Closed – *Some sections of the Pedway have different hours and are open on Sunday.

 Set aside some time to do scouting trips and explore the Pedway.  Don’t be scared of getting lost. It’s part of the learning process.  Avoid exploring during lunch hour. It’s just too crowded. On Sundays, some parts of the Pedway are closed.

BIKE RENTALS Divvy Bikes • www.divvybikes.com

 It’s not just for cold days. Use the Pedway to avoid rain, extreme heat and wind.

Chicago’s newest bike sharing initiative has bicycles for rent at the following locations:  Field Boulevard and South Water Street  Michigan Avenue and Lake Street

What did you think of the New Eastside Pedway?

 Columbus Drive and Randolph Street

After living here for over a year, I finally tried exploring the pedway. I experienced quite a new world and felt much like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. There is access to restaurants and the train system and I found Macy’s and saw Block 37 for the first time. I felt more comfortable knowing that this is a safe, cleaner-than-I-expected route into the Loop. And while there is no place like home, it’s nice to get out into a different part of the city, the underground city of Chicago.

HISTORY

riginally the New Eastside was covered with rail tracks and O buildings dedicated to the Illinois Central Railroad (ICRR).

has won several major design awards. The park features a fenced in playground, dog park, water fountains, a grand staircase, and central lawn.

In 1995, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley presided over a grand opening of the city’s first new downtown skyscraper built in 21 years. One Prudential Tower, 130 E. Randolph St., was built after purchasing the land and air rights from the ICRR. At the time, it was Chicago’s tallest building standing at 41 floors high, and the first of many commercial, residential and hotel properties built in the New Eastside. The name New Eastside did not become used until the 1980s when real estate developers started transforming the neighborhood. Real estate developer Metropolitan Structures added 14 buildings in the 1980s and 1990s to the western part of New Eastside. Beginning in 2002, led by the Magellan Development Group, the eastern portion of the New Eastside began its transformation to its current multi-use residential and commercial space. The company named its project Lakeshore East. Magellan also contributed 10 high-rise buildings, the Village Market, and townhouses. The area that is now a park in the heart of the Lakeshore East and New Eastside communities was previously used as a golf course from 1994 to 2001. The current Park at Lakeshore East was jointly funded by the Chicago Park District and private funds from Magellan Development Group and

Eight New Eastside signs can be found around the neighborhood.

tourists and visitors to the shopping and dining complex Lakeshore East Village Market.

Several organizations have worked to help integrate the neighborhood and foster a sense of community.

On the horizon for the New Eastside, the third tallest tower in Chicago will rise by the river in 2019. Named the Wanda Vista Tower, it will be a combination of hotel and condominiums. GEMS World Academy-Chicago Upper School will be complete in 2016 and an additional high-rise hotel, to be located in the empty lot at 201 N. Columbus Dr. has been announced. Five sites remain open for development in the New Eastside and a public school is part of the master plan for the area.

NEW EASTSIDE COMMUNITY Founded by residents in 2012 in response to the rapidly growing community, the New Eastside Community improves communication within the New Eastside by publishing community newsletters and providing online community resources as well as acting as a clearing house for maintenance requests and a central contact line for community issues.
