CHAMBER HISTORY The Livermore Valley Chamber of Commerce enjoys a long legacy of business leadership in the local community. Records show that the Livermore Chamber of Commerce was in existence at least as early as 1926. However, it wasn’t until 1937 that the Chamber filed its articles of incorporation with the office of the California Secretary of State. Since then, the Chamber has been operated by professional staff with oversight and guidance provided by an elected board of directors. In 2011, the Livermore Chamber of Commerce board of directors approved changing the name of the organization to the Livermore Valley Chamber of Commerce, reflecting the reach of the organization beyond city limits. Over its more than 80 years, diverse business interests have been reflected in the Chamber’s leadership, with a distinguished list of men and women chairing its board of directors since 1932. For more on its history visit www.livermorechamber.org. LVCC MISSION STATEMENT The Livermore Valley Chamber of Commerce enhances the business environment and quality of life in the Livermore Valley through innovation, leadership, visionary programs and powerful connections.

GOVERNMENT CITY The City of Livermore is a great place to live, work and play. In 2016, 93 percent of residents rated the city’s quality of life as “excellent” or “good” in a biannual survey. With a focus on public safety, libraries and economic vitality, Livermore is a great place to thrive and grow. The city, officially established in 1876, is now a full-service city that operates under the council/manager form of government. Four city council members and the mayor are elected at-large by voters. Council members serve four-year terms; the mayor serves a two-year term. The city manager is appointed by the council and serves as the chief executive officer responsible for day-to-day administration of city affairs and implementation of city policies. The city council meets the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7 p.m. at the council chambers, 3575 Pacific Ave. All council meetings are open to the public, and meetings are also broadcast on Tri-Valley Community Television and streamed at www.tri-valleytv.org. The City of Livermore has traditional departments or divisions including police, public works, finance, human resources, planning and engineering. It also boasts an Office of Innovation and Economic Development and a municipal airport. The Livermore Public Library is a municipal department as well, and the city shares its fire services with the City of Pleasanton. The community’s public school district, the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District, is a separate governmental agency, as is the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District. Customer service is a core city value that influences efforts for both residents and businesses. A single-stop streamlined permit process allows customers to easily obtain permits, answers and approvals. The city’s website, www.cityoflivermore.net, increasingly offers online options to handle licenses, payments and more. The i-GATE “Switch” is an effort to help entrepreneurs and small businesses get started with a facility, business education and training and links with local scientists and venture capitalists. Continuous awards from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada illustrate the city’s commitment to budget transparency. The purchasing division’s regular attainment of excellence in procurement demonstrates a pledge to exceptional financial stewardship. The Livermore Municipal Airport plays a vital role in the community, providing economic

benefits, community services and disaster relief to the Tri-Valley for more than 50 years. The Livermore Airport also supports regional needs as exemplified by the 100 transient aircraft hosted there for 2016’s Super Bowl 50 in Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Public safety is a council and community priority. Half of the city’s general fund budget supports police and fire personnel, equipment and supplies, and the city is a very safe place to live and do business. The Livermore Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency with a range of services and educational programs. Its longstanding Citizen’s Police Academy remains a popular program that creates more community volunteers each year. The Halloween trick-or-treat event at police headquarters is a successful new effort to connect police officers with families and youth. The Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department is a consolidated emergency response agency that focuses on emergency preparedness, fire prevention and public education programs. Annual Community Emergency Response Team trainings usually have waiting lists while the department’s October Fire Safety Expo generates large crowds. The Livermore Public Library boasts the beautiful Civic Center Library, a 53,000-squarefoot architectural gem. The Civic Center Library houses a collection of 200,000 items for checkout, including books, audiobooks, DVDs, educational toys, games and technology exploration tools such as programmable robots. Additional services include computer workstations, wireless high-speed internet access, story times, a maker space for children, computer programming classes, science events and a variety of cultural and educational programs for all ages. The Rincon and Springtown Branch libraries serve the

surrounding community with a wonderful selection of resources, cultural events and educational programs. Library card holders can also use the digital library, accessible through the library’s website, to download eBooks and digital audiobooks, take online classes or research a topic. For more information about the city, call (925) 960-4000 or visit www.cityoflivermore. net. The city and several of its department are also active on social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Nextdoor. COUNTY Alameda County is one of 58 counties in California. It is home to more than 1.5 million people living in 14 incorporated cities, including Livermore, as well as in unincorporated communities and rural areas throughout 813 square miles. Alameda County provides health care, social services, public protection and general government programs. Countywide services include the offices of Assessor, auditor-controller/recorder, registrar of voters, treasurer-tax collector, district attorney, public defender and sheriff. In the unincorporated area, the county provides primary law enforcement, fire protection, planning and public works services. The county seat is in Oakland, and the fivemember board of supervisors conducts weekly meetings at its chambers located on the fifth floor of 1221 Oak St. Scott Haggerty represents the Livermore Valley on the board. For more information about the county, visit www.acgov.org or call Supervisor Haggerty’s Pleasanton office at (925) 551-6995. Livermore Valley Chamber of Commerce

Livermore’s arts, culture, science and technology; western heritage; and vibrant wine industry provide a unique blend for our diverse residents and visitors. Festivals, farmers markets and parades bring people to our beloved, awardwinning downtown, while our two national labs bring scientists from around the world to develop new technologies and solve some of the world’s most difficult challenges. Livermore is home to California’s oldest commercial wine region, boasting more than 50 flourishing wineries. The region is renowned for its award-winning wines and genuine hospitality. The Livermore Valley played a pivotal role in shaping California’s wine industry with the planting of the first grapes by Spanish missionaries in the 1760s. Pioneer winemakers C. H. Wente and James Concannon founded wineries in the early 1880s that are still in operation today. Attracted by Livermore’s rich winemaking tradition, climate, soil and geography, new winemakers are working alongside fifth-generation

winegrowers to create a Livermore Valley wine renaissance. Livermore offers premium shopping, dining and entertainment throughout the year. The historic downtown district is the destination place for Livermore residents and guests who want to eat, drink, shop, gather to meet neighbors and friends and enjoy cultural activities. The many locally-owned shops and restaurants, the Bankhead Performing Arts Center and live entertainment venues make

downtown Livermore an exciting destination for all. The San Francisco Premium Outlets offer world-class shopping with over 150 stores to suit all shopping needs and desires. Home to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories, Livermore is a technological hub and an academically engaged community that successfully competes in the global market. Through initiatives such as Innovation TriValley and the i-GATE Switch, Livermore is a place for businesses of all sizes that advance collaboration, foster innovation and promote a culture of entrepreneurship in the greater East Bay Region. Livermore also distinguishes itself from other cities by its representation on the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. Livermorium, Element 116, is named after the city and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Researchers from the lab worked with scientists from Russia’s Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions to synthesize Livermorium and Element 114 Flerovium. Livermore’s eclectic blend of science, arts, western culture and award-winning wineries and breweries make it a community worth exploring. The city’s diverse amenities, business-friendly atmosphere and strong public schools make it a perfect location for new residents, entrepreneurs and businesses of all sizes like new arrivals Tesla Motors and the Gillig Bus Company. INNOVATION A REGIONAL DRIVE FOR THE BEST & BRIGHTEST There are multiple efforts to bring business and researchers together to spur technological advances and to encourage the continued development of the city’s innovation economy. THE NATIONAL LABORATORIES Livermore is home to Lawrence Livermore and Sandia National Laboratories, which employ thousands of leading scientists and engineers solving the nation’s most pressing challenges. The Livermore Valley Open Campus, a joint venture between Lawrence Livermore and Sandia, serves as a new “front door” to the labs to facilitate face-to-face collaborations with academic and industry partners. The open campus works with commercial entities from large companies to start-ups in the areas of high performance computing, cyber security, combustion research, advanced manufacturing and more. www.llnl.gov www.sandia.gov I-GATE INNOVATION HUB I-GATE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building a thriving startup community in the Tri-Valley. I-GATE operates The Switch, a startup incubator and cowork space located in downtown Livermore, as well as speaker series and network building activities to promote collaboration. i-GATE also partners strongly with Sandia and Lawrence Livermore National

Labs to connect their cutting edge innovations with high-impact entrepreneurs. I-GATE alumni companies have collectively raised over $50 million in angel and venture capital and have created hundreds of jobs across the region. www.igateihub.org www.theswitch.io INNOVATION TRI-VALLEY LEADERSHIP GROUP Innovation Tri-Valley is a business-led organization committed to making the Tri-

Valley the best place in the world to start and grow a business. The organization brings together the business community, research labs, educational institutions and civic leaders of the Tri-Valley to work collaboratively toward shared goals of economic prosperity and high quality of life. Key focus areas for Innovation TriValley include housing and infrastructure, transportation, education, workforce development and branding. www.innovationtrivalley.org

THE NATIONAL LABORATORIES LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY Science & technology on a mission Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is a premier research facility that conducts some of the nation’s most innovative science. Lawrence Livermore’s primary focus is national security, whether it’s ensuring the safety and security of the nation’s nuclear stockpile, developing capabilities to strengthen U.S. military forces and homeland security or preventing the worldwide spread and use of weapons of mass destruction. Research efforts extend to other areas that address pressing national needs – such as development of alternative energy, cleaning up and protecting the environment, medical advances, exploring the universe and studying global warming. To conduct science on a grand scale, Lawrence Livermore requires cutting-edge computational and experimental tools and state-of-the-art research facilities. The National Ignition Facility is the world’s 16 Livermore Valley Chamber of Commerce

largest and highest energy laser, used in support of fusion energy research for national security, energy and basic science. Lawrence Livermore’s supercomputers are among the most powerful in the world. A wide range of administrative and operational functions, from efficient business practices to high-tech computer security to the safe use and disposal of hazardous materials, also support Lawrence Livermore’s research. The laboratory’s annual budget is approximately $1.7 billion. Lawrence Livermore has approximately 6,500 employees. Its annual payroll is more than $787 million, making it the largest employer in the city of Livermore and the fourth largest in Alameda County. The lab is managed by the Lawrence Livermore National Security LLC for the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration. Lawrence Livermore’s Discovery Center (open Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 4 p.m.) has numerous science and technology displays. Community tours also are available. Call (925) 422-4599 or visit www.llnl.gov for more information. SANDIA NATIONAL LABORATORIES Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore was established in 1956 and, combined with its Albuquerque, New Mexico, location, is the largest Department of Energy national security research facility. Sandia/California employs some 1,400 staff members and contractors, post-doctoral fellows and students who share the goal of applying science and technology to create a more peaceful and secure world. Sandia grew out of the Manhattan Project, and maintaining the safety, security and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile remains

the foundation of their work. They provide crucial systems engineering capabilities to their sister laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Building on this core scientific knowledge, Sandia/California cultivates multiple capabilities in biosciences, cyber security, energy, materials science, engineering and systems analysis to anticipate and respond to the evolving national security landscape, accelerating innovation in all that they do. Today, their mission spans many national security needs, including areas such as homeland security, transportation energy and bioscience. Examples of current Sandia/California projects or programs include:  Sandia researchers have developed a labon-a-disk platform, SpinDx, that they believe will be faster, less expensive and more versatile than similar medical diagnostic tools. The portable instrument can determine a patient’s white blood cell count, analyze important protein markers and process up to 64 assays from a single small sample, all in a matter of minutes, saving time and money for doctor’s offices and emergency rooms.  The conceptual models for partially premixed low-temperature diesel combustion, developed at Sandia’s Combustion Research Facility, provide the necessary science base for auto and engine manufacturers to build the next generation of cleaner, more fuel-efficient diesel engines. The increased efficiency also translates into lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, which are a major driver of global climate change.  The homogeneous charge compression ignition engine, developed at Sandia’s Combustion Research Facility, which has

caught the attention of automotive and diesel engine manufacturers worldwide. This engine has demonstrated the potential to rival the high efficiency of diesel engines while keeping emissions low.  A cyber security project known as “MegaDroid” is part of ongoing research at Sandia to help prevent and mitigate disruptions to computer networks on the internet, including smartphones and other hand-held computing devices. Sandia cyber researchers linked together 300,000 virtual hand-held computing devices running the Android operating system so they can study large networks of smart phones and find ways to make them more reliable and secure. Although Sandia is a government research and development laboratory directed to meet the nation’s security needs, Sandia also welcomes commercial and business partnership opportunities. Sandia actively seeks to partner with private companies, universities and state and government agencies. The Livermore Valley Open Campus, a partnership between Sandia National Labs and Lawrence Livermore National Lab, is expanding opportunities for researchers and external partners to collaborate on some of the toughest technical challenges facing our nation and the world. Sandia National Laboratories is a multiprogram laboratory operated and managed by Sandia Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation, for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration. Sandia has major R&D responsibilities in national security, energy and environmental technologies and economic competitiveness. Livermore Valley Chamber of Commerce

HEALTH CARE The Livermore Valley has the benefit of being served by three major health care networks – Stanford Health Care-ValleyCare, Kaiser Permanente and John Muir Health. JOHN MUIR HEALTH Livermore residents have access to a wide range of medical services under one roof at the Pleasanton Outpatient Center at 5860 Owens Dr. San Ramon Regional Medical Center and John Muir Health partnered to open the center in 2015. In addition, two John Muir Health Family Medicine physicians, Dr. Richard Kilker and Dr. Sonal Argawal, see patients in their Livermore office at 87 Fenton St., #210. At the Pleasanton Outpatient Center, patients have access to primary care physicians, obstetrics/gynecology physicians, cardiologists, as well as imaging and lab services. Urgent care services are available 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. Patients can also message their John Muir Health doctor, schedule appointments, view lab results, request prescription renewals, get diagnosed and treated using eVisits and more online through MyJohnMuirHealth.com. John Muir professionals listen, explain and work together with patients as a team in every encounter, every time. Whether that’s in the hospital or physician’s office or on the phone scheduling an appointment, this is a commitment to patients. KAISER PERMANENTE The Tri-Valley is a dynamic, growing region of the Bay Area, and Kaiser Permanente has several locations designed to serve its members. Its Livermore Medical Offices offers adult and pediatric medicine, as well as women’s health and a Minor Injury Center to tend to life’s nonemergency bumps and bruises. Other services include health education,

pharmacy, Vision Essentials and comprehensive laboratory and radiology services. The Pleasanton and San Ramon Medical Offices help round out conveniently located services, all designed to provide high-quality care to the residents of the Tri-Valley. And coming soon, a new Dublin campus facility will enable Tri-Valley residents another choice to access personalized specialty care close to home and work. For more information, visit kp.org/diablo. STANFORD HEALTH CARE-VALLEYCARE ValleyCare combines the expertise of local physicians with the innovative strength of Stanford Health Care. In 2015, ValleyCare and Stanford Health Care partnered to become Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare. It provides the Tri-Valley with exceptional, patient-centered community medicine, coupled with specialized Stanford Medicine programs to deliver a full continuum of care. Through highly skilled physicians, nurses and staff and state-of-the art technology, Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare offers a wide range of health care services in its Livermore, Pleasanton and Dublin medical facilities. Visit www. valleycare.com for more information.

SENIOR SERVICES A variety of activities and services for older adults age 50 and up are available through the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District’s (LARPD) Senior Services Center. Celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2017, the park district began providing senior services in 1969. The Senior Services Center now operates as part of the Robert Livermore Community Center on East Avenue. The center serves about 2,500 people per month, including caregivers and families of seniors. Active older adults can join fun fitness classes such as yoga, easy aerobics, tai chi and Zumba. There are also programs providing information on health, nutrition, safe driving, memory training, writing,

art and more. Additional helpful services include legal assistance, hearing aid and eyeglass cleaning, health insurance counseling, tax preparation assistance and health screening. Good nutrition and fun are essential for a healthy life, and the senior center provides a weekday lunch program, a lending library, movie days, billiards, bingo, card games, mahjong, craft group and holiday luncheons. Senior trips are also a fun way for older adults to get to know each other while experiencing new places and fascinating sites. Day excursions are available as well as extended travel trips. Providing senior services to the community is a high priority for LARPD; it strives to continue and expand the emphasis on well-balanced fitness programs, intergenerational programming to bring age groups together and transportation services, as well as information and referrals and a wide range of recreation activities year-round. To learn more about senior services, call (925) 373-5760, visit www. larpd.org or stop by the senior center at 4444 East Ave. during the hours of 9 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

PARKS & RECREATION Recreation of all kinds is in abundant supply for Livermore residents and visitors. The Livermore area is served by two park districts – the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District (LARPD) and the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD). LIVERMORE AREA RECREATION AND PARK DISTRICT This independent special district is separate from the City of Livermore and operates more than 40 parks, trails and facilities for outdoor and indoor fun. Residents have access to 33 neighborhood parks offering features such as playgrounds, multi-use open turf areas, practice sports fields, picnic areas, walking paths, basketball courts, tennis courts and dog parks. Three community parks provide a broad range of recreational opportunities that draw people from throughout Livermore and beyond. Community parks contain sports fields, swimming pools and group picnic areas and serve as locations for special events. Special-use parks and facilities serve citizens looking for everything from sports fields, event rentals and meeting spaces to a skate park and an equestrian arena. The great outdoors are also easily accessible with the district’s open space parks and preserves. Hiking, biking and ranger-led programs can be enjoyed in open space parks such as Sycamore Grove Park. The district also operates Camp Shelly, a family campground in South Lake Tahoe. The district coordinates with the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District to provide before- and after-school licensed child care programs for elementary and middle school students. LARPD’s youth services also provides preschool classes at six locations in the community. Many classes and programs are offered year-round for a variety of interests and age groups. The Robert Livermore Community Center on East Avenue serves as the hub for recreational fun. The 71,000-squarefoot center includes the senior center, meeting and activity rooms, a double gymnasium, large event ballroom and two outdoor pools. To learn more about the park district’s many community contributions, visit www.larpd.org, call (925) 373-5700 or visit the Robert Livermore Community Center at 4444 East Ave.

EAST BAY REGIONAL PARK DISTRICT This park district is also an independent special district, and is a regional park system serving Alameda and Contra Costa counties on the eastern side of the San Francisco Bay. EBRPD has 65 regional parks in its system, including several in the Livermore Valley: Del Valle, Brushy Peak, Pleasanton Ridge and Shadow Cliffs. Many of its parks feature recreations areas, wilderness, and preserves; park and inter-regional trail systems; and areas for swimming, boating, fishing and camping. LIVERMORE VALLEY WINE COUNTRY A THRIVING WINE REGION IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA Visitors are sometimes surprised to find a flourishing expanse of vineyards and wineries less than an hour to the east of San Francisco: Livermore Valley Wine Country. Sharing the picturesque canyons and ridges of the area with outposts of suburbia, the welcoming sight of vines and tasting rooms defines the quality of life in the Livermore Valley. To the delight of residents and visitors alike, the region continues to experience a wine renaissance harking back to the golden years of early California wine history. The Livermore Valley is one of California’s oldest wine regions and played a pivotal role in shaping California’s wine industry. Robert Livermore planted the first commercial vines in the 1840s. Pioneer winemakers C. H. Wente, James Concannon and Charles Wetmore

recognized the area’s winegrowing potential and founded their wineries in the early 1880s. International recognition followed when Livermore Valley captured America’s first international gold medal for wine in 1889 at the Paris Exposition – putting California on the world wine map. Playing a leading role in the state’s enology and viticulture, innovations developed in the Livermore Valley include overhead irrigation, mechanical harvesting and roller crushing in the vineyard. Livermore Valley wineries were the first to bottle Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Petite Sirah varietals. Nearly 80 percent of California’s Chardonnay vines trace their genetic roots to a Livermore Valley clone. a
