dgars stores celebrates decades of clothing Zimbabwe, and giving opportunity for the local industry in the clothing retail sector to continue operating. This year marks the 2nd edition of the “Edgars Zimbabwe Local Designers’ Initiative”, which launched in March 2016 as a talent-seeking and development program for local clothing and accessory designers. The promotion is open to designers residing in Zimbabwe or of Zimbabwean nationality residing in other countries, who will gain skills that will be invaluable to their careers, from being groomed in the artistry of garment construction, all the way through to learning how to market and sell their products. With each edition, 3 clothing designers are selected out of the competition entries. Adjudicators select the 3, and award them with cash prizes and most importantly, an opportunity to develop their skills further at our manufacturing factory in Bulawayo – Carousel. In 2016, we celebrated the launch edition with Sekai Sandamu and her Kaisan range, Heather Madlabuta with DVJ and Kuda Chihungwa with K7 who launched their brands and sold them in-store. The product received phenomenal reviews from our customers with some items selling out within hours of landing on the shop floor. This year we celebrate Afro Chique by Salome Jere, Maison Du Lorrain by Tawana Nyamupingidza and Hypnotique by Thandi Mguquka (featured in the Fashion Trend Alert). The 3 ladies were stationed at Carousel clothing factory in Bulawayo for a 3 month period and after completing training, have 3 exceptional ranges to offer our female customers. Their product hits stores this October and will be sold at the Edgars Stanely House branch in Harare as well as Edgars Cnr J. Moyo & 8th in Bulawayo. The ranges boast of exotic summer colors, lovely fabrication as well as surprise features which give each garment a unique edge. We hope you are customers will be as excited about these new ranges as we are. As Edgars we are investing in local talent because that is what we believe will re-build the clothing and fashion industry in this country. There is a lot of skill and raw talent out there and we are excited to be part of the initiative to bring that out, and showcase these capabilities to the nation. For us, it’s a celebration of who we are as Zimbabweans. We are and forever will be Edgars! leaders in this field and it is our resolve to remain so. c

How to manage your hair type


ype 4c hair doesn’t get enough love. There are a few dedicated Instagram pages and brands focusing on 4c hair but in general it is are under represented. It can be hard to find infomation on how to properly take care of this curl pattern of hair. Here are some tips to help you manage your type 4c hair, and type 4 hair in general since a lot of women with 4c have a mix of other type 4 textures. Some people have type 4c with some patches of 4a mixed in.


. Moisture Is Key

Type 4 hair can be very dry and needs a lot of moisture, espe-

cially 4c hair. Before you pile on the leave-in conditioners, moisturising cream and oils, it’s important to know that water is key in keeping your hair moisturised. Water is absorbed into the strands and these other products lock it in to keep hair moisturised. This is why water based moisturisers work best for our hair, but they are not enough. The L.O.C. Method works best in keeping my hair moisturised. This involves applying a water-based Leave-In Conditioner to soaking wet hair, followed by an Oil to lock it in, and a butter-based Cream for extra moisture. You just have to find products that work nicely

together without leaving residue or flaking. Water is not only your best friend externally but internally as well, so drink up for healthy hair, nails and skin.


. Do Not Comb Your

Hair While Dry

Unless you want breakage. Although our hair is very strong, it is also very fragile. It’s easy for our hair to tangle since our strands are so tightly coiled and close knit. Combing through these tangles while your hair is dry will cause unnecessary breakage. It’s best to comb 4c hair while soaking wet, using a conditioner with a lot of

slip (allows the comb to easily glide through). You’ll be able to comb through your hair more easily and will only lose the hair that naturally sheds out of our head daily.


. Less Manipulation

= Less Breakage

Speaking of combing 4c hair, it’s best not to comb too much. Combing your hair every day will lead to breakage. Create styles that last at least a week and don’t require too much manipulation like finger coils, finger shingles, twist outs and perm rod sets. Some naturalistas wash and style their hair every 7 to 14 days and only comb while styling. In between styles its recommended not to comb hair, just use a pick to lift the roots if your hair gets flat from sleeping on it. Less manipulation allows your hair to flourish and grow.

Honey Mustard Chicken & Bacon Skewers


Juice of ½ lemon a pinch of crushed red 2 chicken breasts, cut into 3 pepper flakes strips each ¼ tsp paprika 8 slices Bacon ½ cup shredded cheddar 1 tsp seasoned salt cheese 2 tbsp honey 2 green onions, chopped 2 tbsp dijon mustard Skewers METHOD: In a plastic bag, add the seasoned salt, honey, dijon mustard, lemon juice, red pepper flakes, and paprika. Seal and shake to mix everything up. Add chicken to the bag. Seal the bag while letting the air out. Mix the chicken around with the marinade until chicken is coated. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to an hour. When ready to grill, lay a chicken strip onto a piece of bacon. Thread them together onto skewer alternating back and forth. Grill over medium high heat rotating until chicken is cooked through. Remove from heat and garnish with a little shredded cheese and green onions.

Crazy Good Beef & Broccoli


5 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons corn starch 1 tablespoon oil For the sauce: 500g flank steak, sliced into 1/4 1/2 cup soy sauce inch thick strips 1/4 cup brown sugar 3 cups small broccoli florets 2 teaspoons corn starch 1/2 cup beef stock METHOD: Toss sliced beef in bowl with corn starch. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat for a few minutes. Add beef and cook until it browns. Transfer to a plate and set aside. Add broccoli and garlic to the pan, and stir. Add beef broth. Let simmer until the broccoli is tender, about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. While waiting for the broccoli to cook, combine all of the sauce ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Add the reserved beef and sauce to the pan, and stir. Let simmer for 5 minutes so the sauce thickens a bit. Serve beef and broccoli over cooked white rice.

Chicken & Bacon with Spinach


6 slices bacon chopped 2 cloves garlic 350g spaghetti or penne 2 c. diced tomatoes (canned 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil or fresh) 500g boneless skinless chicken 3 c. baby spinach breasts cut into strips 1/2 c. heavy cream kosher salt 1/3 c. freshly grated Parmesan Freshly ground black pepper Fresh basil, for garnish METHOD: Cook spaghetti or penne according to package directions until al dente. Drain, reserving 1 cup pasta water, and return to pot. Season chicken with salt and pepper and cook in large skillet of oil, until cooked through and no longer pink. In a second skillet, cook bacon until crispy. Pour off half the bacon fat and add garlic, tomatoes, and spinach to skillet. Season with salt and pepper, then add heavy cream, Parmesan, and 1/2 cup pasta water; let simmer. Add spaghetti or penne and toss until fully coated. Add chicken and bacon and toss, then garnish with basil and serve.

GUIDE TO PAINT FINISHES There’s a basic rule of thumb to follow when choosing paint sheens: The higher the sheen, the higher the shine — and the higher the shine, the more durable it will be. Flat paint has no shine; high-gloss is all shine. In between are eggshell, satin, and semi-gloss, each with its own practical and decorative job to do. Here’s how to choose the right paint sheen for your painting job. igh Gloss: The most durable and easiest to clean of all paint sheens, high-gloss paint is hard, ultra-shiny, and light-reflecting. Think appliance-paint tough.High gloss is a good choice for area that sticky fingers touch — cabinets, trim, and doors. High-gloss, however, is too much shine for interior walls. And like a Spandex dress, high gloss shows every bump and roll, so don’t skimp on prep work. Practical application: kitchens, door, and window trim Durability: very high

t the beginning of school last year, 16-year-old Tarisai was invited to participate in several school activities. “I knew I didn’t have time to do them all,” she says, “so I chose the ones I knew I would really enjoy.” Tarisai practices a smart strategy for success in high school - she in control of her time. Homework. Music practice. Chores. School projects. Sports team. Part-time job. Friends. Dating. Throw in exams or proficiency tests, and the result can be major stress. Practically every teen has been stressed out with too much to do and too little time to do it in. One of the problems, as Tarisai

found, is that so many activities compete for one’s time. Teens who manage their time well have their personal favourite tips that work best for them, but all agree on one important strategy: Set priorities. For Tarisai and Edward, 16, school is number one. “If I have a test coming up,” Edward explains, “I’ll turn down an invitation from a friend—school work before fun.” Tarisai agrees. Like many teens, she doesn’t like the feeling of having an unfinished project hanging over her; it’s a major stressor. “Say I have a big project due in two days,” she says. “I would do the project first, then I can enjoy the time I spend with

my friends.” Tarisai also starts right away on her assignments. Edward tries to break down projects into small pieces and not tackle them all at once. Not so with 15-year-old Andy. School is a priority for him, also, but his style is a little different: “Most times I wait to finish things. I won’t put them off, but I don’t rush to do them. This seems to work well for me, though I know most people have a hard time doing that. And I make sure assignments are completed on time and thoroughly.” Andy reports that this tactic works well for him; he’s rarely overwhelmed or stressed out by upcoming assignments. He plans

out beforehand what he needs to complete, and he’s able to fit in a large class load, play piano and bass in a band, and spend at least one night a weekend with friends. The difference in these teens’ styles points out the importance of developing time management skills that work for the individual; one size doesn’t fit all. For example, one conventional time management tip is to write down everything in a master planner. But Tarisai has found that keeping different calendars for different purposes works best for her. She has one calendar for school, one for soccer practice, and another for dance, birthdays, student council meetings, and so on. Andy writes down homework assignments in a school planner, but says, “Most things I don’t need to write down because I have a good memory.” Teens should experiment with different strategies until they find what works for them. Most teens do find that keeping some form of written schedule is helpful. Activities that come at fixed hours and cannot be changed should be listed first. Classes, activities with fixed time periods, work, and sleep fall into this category. Teens have more flexibility in determining when to complete homework assignments, exams, and papers. Sleep is one area in which teens short change themselves. They need at least nine hours of sleep each night, but a recent studies show that teens averaged just 7.3 hours a night. The researchers also noted that students who had mostly A’s on their report cards averaged more sleep than those who received D’s and F’s. Inadequate sleep also can cause or aggravate stress. Getting enough sleep isn’t always a matter of merely scheduling sleep time— it’s also budgeting enough time to finish assignments. Some teens

stay up late to finish assignments because they misjudge how much time they take. A rule of thumb is to estimate how much time one thinks an assignment will take, then tack on another 25%.

Teens need to realize that time management strategies such as these won’t magically allow them to squeeze in everything they want to do. They must make choices on how to spend their time—back to priorities again. “It’s hard to say no,” says Tarisai, “but you have to if you want to manage your time. It’s better to be fully involved, for example, do your share for the club or group, than to just show up and not be prepared or do nothing. Make sure you have the time to contribute. It’s better to do well in fewer activities.” She advises time-stressed teens to drop some activities if they’re feeling it’s too much. Some people find the idea of managing their time restrictive. “I don’t want to turn into an efficiency robot,” they protest. But managing time doesn’t mean being controlled by a schedule; it means having control. Unexpected events happen, things take longer than anticipated, and new obligations continually pop up. Don’t schedule yourself too tightly. Leaving some time open to move activities around and for recreational and “down” time is crucial. Good time management skills are a proven buffer against academic stress and can help teens lead a more balanced life. Like any skills, people are not born with them. They have to practice. Encourage teens not to give up if they find themselves stressed out despite their efforts to manage their time. The key is to keep trying and try not to worry too much about it. The more you worry, the harder things will be.

Getting paid can help you feel better about spending money without “making” it. Remember, you are doing a job. Payment can also come as an occasional treat like a weekend morning to yourself, a new pair of jeans, an extra day with a babysitter -- there are plenty of little ways you can feel rewarded.

enice is such a treasure trove that it would be impossible to do it justice in just a day. Secondly, get started early and head to the principal sites before the huge crowds descend on them and make life unbearable. Thirdly, don’t try and walk everywhere. It will be exhausting, especially in August when the temperatures are at their highest. Invest in a day pass on the vaporetti (water buses) and use the traghetti (gondola ferries) whenever possible—they cost only 50 cents. Lastly, combine visits to key sites with places off the beaten track where you can catch your breath and relax. There are many hidden campos just a stone’s throw from the major tourist spots. HERE’S OUR GUIDE TO SPENDING ONE DAY IN VENICE: PIAZZA SAN MARCO: A good starting point is Piazza San Marco

(St. Mark’s Square) where you will have the chance to indulge in its splendor before the crowds converge on it around mid-morning. Napoleon called this place the ‘Finest dining room of Europe’ and the view from the Piazza certainly bears this out. Feast your eyes on the magnificence of the 900-year old Basilica di San Marco with its five beautiful ornate domes that evoke the merging of Romanesque and Byzantine architecture. On the left of the piazza is the Torre dell’Orologio (Moor’s Clock Tower) with its distinctive clock face and two moors standing on top and hammering the large bell on the hour. To the right is the Campanile, towering over the piazza and offering a panoramic view over Venice if you take the one minute lift ride to the top.

Moving through the Piazza San Marco and its two granite columns signifying the gateway to Venice is the magnificent Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale). Nicknamed “the wedding cake”, it is difficult not to appreciate the beauty of this building, dominating the waterway with its wonderfully ornate arcades and its façade covered in pink Verona marble and Istrian limestone. THE WATERFRONT: If you carry on along the waterfront past San Zaccaria on the Riva degli Schiavoni, you eventually arrive at a bridge leading to the Arsenale, the symbol of the Venetian Republic’s military strength from the 12th to 16th century. Although you can’t enter this military complex, the short walk is worthwhile just to see the wonderful triumphal arch

at the entrance, the Porta Magna, flanked by four marble lions. The café in the square outside is good place to take a breather and a coffee. From here, take the vaporetto to Ponte di Rialto (Rialto Bridge) along the Grand Canal and see the most important bridge in Venice. Rather than dwell too long on the bridge, turn right and descend into the Pescaria and Erberie, the fish and vegetable markets. The former is housed in an arcaded loggia and is filled with stalls selling every type of seafood imaginable including octopus, mussels, swordfish and sea bass as well as sea turtles, eels and crabs. The vegetable market is in the Campo della Pescaria next to the Grand Canal and bustles with locals and chefs shopping for every variety of fresh fruit and vegetables. Make sure, however, that you arrive before 12.00, when the market closes for the day. Sample the gondola and take the traghetto, next to the market, across the Grand Canal for the sum of 50 cents and head off to the Cannaregio district in the North East and the church of Madonna dell’Orto near the Canale delle Fondamenta Nove. Weave your way through alleyways, across bridges and savor the peace and tranquility of this area, much less frequented by the crowds. This was Tintoretto’s (1518-1594) local
