THE VILLAGE, THE KIBBUTZ, THE CITY (LIKUD) 3rd Paper Biennale, The Eretz Israel Museum, Tel Aviv March-November 2017

This project will display an assortment of individual maquettes that will be placed together between two walls and thus simulate the Israeli built space. This representation of the local settelments is characterised by a unique and original structure, both figuratively and ideally. In the current place in time, the spaces I choose and represent- the house and its surroundings, undergo a physical and cultural transformation. I examine the different types- the arab village, the Kibbutz and the city, through a series of photographes. Paper, as a work material, offers a chance for simultaneously and range of possibility that are not confined or limited by a conventional sence of time, but rather expresses ideas from different temporal, geographical and cultural realms. The material that work is made of embodies a culturalgeographical potential that is caused by the locality’s shifting nature, and comes together as piece through a process of abstractiob, my main practice. The act of abstraction is a kind of deconstruction which allows a reconfiguration of the elements so to create a new form- consolidatiob of familiare space in order to create something new - a different way to construct space. The space as it appears to the viewer symbolizes reality, but does not replace it; its commitment is rather to the series of photographs which it is based on.

THE MOUNDS OF JAFFA

Graduation Project Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem July 2014

Tel Aviv-Jaffa has multiple layers - some visible, some concealed and even hidden. Such is the layered ‘big city’ of Jaffa, that expanded in the 19th century through the surrounding orchard settlements out of religious, political, and economic interests. This agricultural area in East Jaffa was owned by Effendis (lords) from the city, who employed Egyptian fellahin whom they housed in residential areas near the workplace. In parallel, well houses came into being to house the land owners and their workers, while serving as a link in the chain of exporting agricultural products from the orchard through the city's port. This project examines the preservation of cultural values that preceded the existence of Tel Aviv - the workplace as a place of living - juxtaposing two different models that were simultaneously built on the same land: Palestinian farming culture and modern Zionist culture. In this fashion, a well house built on an excavated mound is now located near an urban boulevard, which has become a main thoroughfare. Unlike the familiar processes of gentrification conservation projects in Tel Aviv today, this project proposes enhancing the fundamental characteristics associated with this part of the city - as a manufacturing area within a residential neighborhood - through increasing residential space in parallel.
