Moyo Restaurant & Urban Farm Location: V&A Waterfront, Cape Town, South Africa Program: Urban farm, food market and restaurant Client: Moyo and V&A Waterfront Area: 3500sqm
DESIGN CONCEPT The combination of a market and a restaurant provided an unique oppertunity to tell the story of food in its full cycle, allowing us to introduce relevant ideas such as urban farming and sustainable technologies into the narrative of the project.
MARKET ARCADE Using the Africa Souk as reference, the Market Arcade is a semi-covered structure, with the narrow strip as the main market route, while the wider strip is populated with seats as a public lounge. Solar panels on top of the arcade provide power for the restaurant and market, and double as shading device.
MARKET STALLS The stalls are designed as temporary pre-fab units made of interlocking insulation panels and timber cladding. All the units can be relocated or recycled.
AQUAPONIC URBAN FARM Using the closed system of aquaponic farming, vertical pvc pipes are modified like totem-poles to carry an array of fresh greens, each feeding off nutriants provided by the water from the nearby fish tank.
