two systems. Polk commissioners and Columbus Town Council each approved a water interconnect agreement earlier this year that details how the two entities will purchase water from each other. Polk County decided during joint meetings between the county, towns of Columbus and Tryon and City of Saluda to pay for the interconnect in order to have back-up water for all Polk County governments. Tryon is already connected to Columbus and Saluda. The county/Columbus interconnect will mean that all three towns and the county’s well water system are connected. Polk County is also discussing future water connections from its Green Creek Broad River Water Authority line to the rest of the county for a future county-wide water system. line, including two taps for Midway Baptist Church and one tap each for Giardini’s and Gallant Enterprises LLC. Polk County commissioners approved in February a bid from Steppe Construction to construct the line for $592,000. Whitson said contractors ran into rock near the high school, which was expected, but there was enough in the contingency fund to cover the costs. The scheduled completion date of the project will depend on how much rock is hit during construction, but so far the budget is on track, according to Whitson. The 12-inch water line includes the installation of 10 fire hydrants, and one of the last phases of the project will include the installation of a pump station near the high school. The water line construction began at the high school and will end at Wolverine Trail, connecting the

into the evening Sunday as a send off to staff and those who have patronized the bar over the years. Founded in 1934, Elmo’s Pub & Grill was originally established as “Pop’s Beer Garden” by Pop Burnette. Whitey Baron named it Whitey’s when he purchased it from Burnette. Then he sold the bar to Sam Summey in the 60s, at which time it became Sam’s Place and actually sat in the storefront next door to Elmo’s current location. Summer sold the place in the 1970s to Horace “Doc” Smith but remained a regular. “I owned it for 12 years at its location next door – there’s no doubt it will be missed. We’re here every day,” Summey said. The “we’re” Summey referred to includes himself and the four or five other guys he meets every day at 4 p.m. for a beer – or two. Rat Bradley is one of those guys. “This is my office in the after-

have a big effect on a lot of people,” said regular Patricia Gossenreiter. “People have shared a lot of laughter, a lot of tears – we’ve shared our lives in here.” These people stopped in after Doc Smith died and the bar came to be owned by Curt Barnette. They pulled up bar stools when Tim Ballew and Phillip “Fat Packy” Pack bought the place – keeping the name Doc’s before selling it to Preston Kirby in 1985. Their loyalty remained when the pub moved next door to its current location and became “Preston’s of Tryon.” Pam and her husband, Elliot, purchased the bar in 2004 from Tommy Southard. Pam had managed the bar for Southard for almost a decade. Later that year, Elliot was killed in an accident and the name of the bar changed to Elmo’s in his honor. As most locals know, the bar has seen several owners, different names and experienced that small location change, but it has maintained a place in many locals’ hearts. Janet Jackson has frequented the pub since 1979. At the time, Pam Johnson managed the bar and the two became good friends. “It’s a hometown pub with people that we all know and have grown up with all our lives. People come in here and work out their problems,” Jackson said. “Out of everyone’s life experience, there’s usually someone who has been through what you are going through and, without criticism or judgment, they help you sort it out.” Lots of things got sorted out over a cold beer and a burger at Elmo’s. The “family” of regulars that take their seat at the bar or tables in the front window shoot the breeze about everything – town politics, relationship issues, babies on the way, deaths in the family and even legal problems. Sunday night they shared laughter and tears as Elmo’s – the place Jackson said they all felt completely safe to be themselves – sold its last round.
Johnson originally posted the announcement of Elmo’s closure on Facebook early in the morning on Friday, June 1. “This is very hard for me to say, but Elmo’s will close its doors after Sunday night. I would like to thank everyone who bought a beer, mixed drink and down to a burger through the years. I have been there 18 years and I thank all of you for all your support!” With Elmo’s closing and her son, Wesley, preparing to head off to the Navy in four weeks, Johnson said she plans to enjoy time with him and then figure out her next step.

Progress continues on Tryon Streetscape projects Tryon’s Streetscape is under way again, and many individuals and groups have participated to make these downtown infrastructure upgrades possible. The phase-one construction project to reconfigure the intersection at the southern gateway into Tryon was completed recently by Trace and Company at New Market and South Trade Streets. Landscaping of the area to Mark Byington’s planting scheme has also been accomplished by Thompson’s Landscaping, with funding participation by Stuart Evan’s Art in Bloom Artscapes group, including the Tryon Fine Arts Center and several Tryon area garden clubs. Project Manager Crys Armbrust said, “The present upgrades are part and parcel of the Tryon Streetscape Master Plan by Milone and MacBroom, which Tryon Downtown
Development Association (TDDA) commissioned in 2001, and which acts as the guiding template for all architectural and infrastructure improvements in Tryon’s historic Central Business District (CBD). The then $96,000 Streetscape Master Plan was funded solely through generous tax-deductible donations to TDDA by local Tryon residents.” The complete master plan docu- The intersection of New Market Road and S. Blitzen Benz Racing third in endurance race at Daytona Landrum/Tryon’s Blitzen Benz Racing’s endurance road racing team placed third in the inaugural Memorial Day Weekend ChumpCar World Series 14-hour race. The event was held at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla., home of the Daytona 500, the Firecracker 400 and Rolex 24-Hour races. Daytona’s very fast 3.56-mile road course incorporates the NASCAR tri-oval superspeedway and an infield course. Baby Blitzen, the Mercedes Benz 190E-based race car, during a leg driven by Rob Hall, posted the fastest lap of the race. About half the 117-car field finished a race made unusually grueling by occasional strong winds and rain from Tropical Storm Beryl. Nearly all major manufacturers were represented, including Porsche, BMW, Mustang, Camaro, Nissan Z/SX, Mazda RX7/ Miata, Honda/Acura, Toyota/ MR2, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Saab and Audi. Race teams traveled to the “hallowed ground” of Daytona from as far away as California, the Pacific Northwest, Canada and Puerto Rico. The Blitzen Benz Racing team consisted of drivers Warren Board and Jim Wright of Tryon, Rob Hall of Concord, N.C., Ned Gallaher of Asheville, N.C. and Mark Thomas of Waynesboro, Va. The crew chief was Rusty Tredinnick of Mills River, N.C. and the mechanic was Greg Pressley of Hendersonville, N.C.

The third-place finish at Daytona and fourth-place finishes at Road Atlanta in February and Virginia International Raceway in March secured an invitation for Blitzen Benz to participate in the ChumpCar World Series 2012 Regional Championship race in October at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. The next race on the Blitzen Benz schedule will be a 24hour endurance race at Virginia International Raceway on Aug. 11-12. – article submitted by Warren Board

Donald R. Tyson
Donald Richard Tyson of Tryon died peacefully on Friday, June 1, 2012 at the Hospice of the Carolina Foothills Smith-Phayer House in Landrum. He was 78. He was born on Aug. 18, 1933 in Pottstown, Pa. during one of the area’s many major floods. The doctor came in a boat to the home of his parents, Eva Beecher Tyson and Wilson Tyson, to deliver the baby. Young Don attended North Coventry High School in North Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. He later attended Merrimack College, where he earned an associate’s degree.
Don served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, earning the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal. Following his military service, he embarked on a career in production management, working for Western Electric, Sanders Associates and Computervision. Don served as a volunteer firefighter in Boxford, Mass. for 18 years. He was a handyman and loved doing projects around the
house. He also had an artistic flair for drawing, woodcarving and lettering. His musical tastes tended toward jazz as well as drum and bugle corps competitions (Don’s first date with future wife Rochelle was to such a competition). Following his retirement to Tryon from Hampstead, N.H. in December 1997, he took up golf. A religious man, Don was active in his church. He was a devoted father and husband and always demonstrated a sincere concern for others. Perhaps his most prominent trait was his sunny disposition and positive attitude. Complaining was not in his nature. When you were with Don Tyson, you couldn’t help smiling; he radiated optimism and positive energy.

Donald Tyson is survived by his wife of 29 years, Rochelle Trahan Tyson; a sister, Margaret Wanger of Pottstown, Pa.; a son, Timothy Tyson (Paula) of Lowell, Mass.; daughters, Jacquelyn Tyson Singleton (John) of Georgetown, Mass. and Kimberly Tyson Dues (Wesley) of Dickinson, Texas; and eight grandchildren. There will be a mass of Christian burial on Thursday, June 7 at 11 a.m. at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Tryon, followed immediately by an informal lunch and celebration of Don’s life at the Tryon Depot on Pacolet Street. Memorials may be made to Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry or Hospice of the Carolina Foothills.

Social media as a form of communications for nonprofits The Nonprofit Leadership column continues discussing marketing for nonprofits and the social media marketing strategy/plan. In the last article we discussed the base line of social media; in this article, we will talk about social media as a form of communication for nonprofits. For those of you who have been in the nonprofit sector for many years, you will recall the way it was before social media came on the scene. First there was a long, drawn out communications committee meeting to discuss what it was that the nonprofit wanted to communicate. The draft was then approved, published and sent out to the existing constituents. The nonprofit would have then conducted a survey or focus group to receive feedback on the communication. Now with social media the original message or idea is instantly sent out to all constituents following the nonprofit on their social media outlets. These constituents then share the related ideas and it spreads through their connections on the social media network. From this instant sharing, the message or idea is shaped and morphed into additional ideas and messages. Some implications of social media for nonprofit organizations include that their messages and ideas spread rapidly, producing momentum and tipping points. The ideas and messages also move without bounds of time and place, meaning the Internet and social media are on 24/7.

Hugh Arledge
Hugh Arledge, 90, of Mill Spring passed away Friday evening, June 1, 2012 in the Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills, Landrum. Born in Green River Cove, he was the son of the late Harrison and Dora Bishop Arledge. Mr. Arledge was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army. He worked many years as a brick mason before working at General Electric in
For these two reasons nonprofits must ensure if they participate in social media they must be present. Being present does not mean that you have to be on social media every second of every day, but you should check and follow up regularly and have the volunteer staffing and/or regular staffing roles to accommodate being present in the social media realm. Another implication of social media for nonprofits is that technology is a core competency for users and access to technology and basic computing skills are prerequisites to participation. This may mean for some nonprofit organizations that a percentage of your constituent database may not be able to participate. Some examples of social media technologies for nonprofit organizations include the following. For communication nonprofit organizations can use one or more of the following technologies; podcasting, Vlogs, Blogs, Facebook, Twitter and listserves. Podcasting is a great free tool used with the ever-popular Itunes (either on your computer or smart phone). Universities have used podcasting for several years for distance students and nonprofit organizations dedicated to educa-
tion. Vlogs are simply video logs, now being posted on popular sites such as YouTube. Many nonprofit organizations are using Vlogs for educational seminars, to capture events and promote their programs and services. Blogs are a great way to document events, programs or to have a continuing education dialog among constituents. Listserves are a great way to confidentially share information among a select group of volunteers, donors and/ or constituents. I am not going to say much about Facebook and Twitter in hopes that most of the people reading this know what these two tools are used for. For knowledge and collaboration nonprofit organizations can use one or more of the following technologies; wikis, about. com, group sites and discussion forums. Nonprofit organizations, in addition to a regular blog can set up a “knowledge” blog known as a wiki. Nonprofit organizations can also contribute to educational sites, such as Wikipedia and About.com. Nonprofits can also set up their own group sites and discussion forums where their constituents can hold in depth discussions about issues with others from across the globe. For organizing and networking, nonprofit organizations can use one or more of the following technologies: instant messaging, event management sites and virtual worlds. Instant messaging is a free way for nonprofit volunteers, staff
Hendersonville, N.C., retiring in 1984. Mr. Arledge was a charter member of Faith Baptist Church, Mill Spring, serving as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed gardening and taught shape notes. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Inez Moss Arledge; two sisters, Grace Metcalf of Mill Spring and Nelma Jackson of Columbus; one brother, Beauford Arledge (Helen) of Mill Spring; one brotherin-law, Vernon Moss (Joanne) of Mill Spring, and one sister-in-law, Floy Moss Jones of Inman, S.C. Also surviving are many nieces and
nephews. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 4 in Faith Baptist Church, Mill Spring, with Rev. Tim Gouge and Rev. William Kanupp officiating. Nephews served as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Faith Baptist Church, 265 Hwy. 9 North, Mill Spring, N.C. 28756. Nonprofit Leadership Melissa Le Roy
and board members to talk for free via their computer either by text or video chat. The nice thing about instant messaging in addition to the fact that it is free is that you can see when the other person is available or unavailable. With event management sites nonprofits can now send out, take reservations and sell tickets for their events and programs using one software program. Examples of some of the more popular event management sites and software are Constant Contact and Network for Good. Since a whole series could be written on virtual worlds I am going to save this one for later in this series to explain this aspect of social media. Nonprofits are also now seeing some hybrid technologies emerge such as social shopping. Social shopping is where the nonprofits constituents can support their favorite nonprofit organization while shopping for everyday items. A great example of this is Good Search. Good Search is a site that constituents can make their home page and every time they search the Internet a penny is donated to the nonprofit they choose and when shopping at approved retailers, such as my favorite, Lands End, a percentage of their sale is donated to that or a different nonprofit of their choosing. In the next article we will discuss the steps for getting started using social media for your nonprofit.

cars will return to the Blue Ridge BBQ & Music Festival in Tryon. These restored classic cars will be on display by their owners, all of whom will be hoping for prizes and trophies. Dennis Nagle, who chairs the festival car show committee, said last year’s event, a first for the festival, was a big success. It drew approximately 120 cars, he said, and he expects this year to be even better. Entry fee is only $20 per car and includes admission for two people. The Carolina Classic Car Club (Spartanburg, S.C.) will host the event. Registration is from noon until 3 p.m., when judging begins. Winners will be announced at 7 p.m. Best of Show Car and Truck will be chosen, and trophies will be awarded to the top 20 cars and trucks (plus GM, FOMOCO, MOPAR and Non Big 3). There will also be a 50/50 drawing and door prizes. If you have questions about displaying a car at the festival, contact the BBQ office at 828859-7427. The 19th Annual Blue Ridge BBQ & Music Festival will be held at Harmon Field in Tryon, NC, on June 8 and 9. It includes not only a cooking competition
