Divorce Rates Factors of High Divorce Rates

Plenty of statistics are compiled about the high divorce rates in America, with many reporting that around 50 percent of marriages end in divorce. A number of factors contribute to the high divorce rate. Many of these factors relate to social and economic changes that have taken place in the United States over the years.

Age

Age seems to play a significant role in divorce rates. According to Divorcerate.org, the people most likely to get divorced are those who married between ages 20 and 24. Women who married between ages 20 and 24 accounted for 36.6 percent of total divorces; men who married at this age accounted for 38.8 percent. This figure falls dramatically for people who married between ages of 35 and 39, with women accounting for 5.1 percent and men for 6.5 percent of total divorces.

Remarriage

U.S. divorce rates seem to increase after a first marriage. According to the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology in Springfield, Missouri, around 50 percent of first marriages end in divorce compared with 67 percent of second and 74 percent of third marriages.

Legal process

The legal process for divorce in the United States is far simpler than it used to be. Advice can be sought online, and proof of adultery, which has always been one of the main grounds for divorce, is no longer needed to initiate proceedings.

Social Mobility

At one time, most women depended on their husbands financially because they were at home bringing up children. But now, with so many women working and able to support themselves, many women are less financially reliant on their husbands and thus in a more stable position to file for divorce if they are unhappy in their marriages.

Families With Children

Evidence suggests that married couples with children are less likely to get divorced than couples without children. Suggestions for why this is include an unfulfilled desire to have children and a greater determination to stay married for the sake of the children.
