With this being one of the first relatively 'BIG' shows that has taken place since the beginning of COVID with over 70,000 people in attendance at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, there was a LOT to catch up on and INSPIRATION was everywhere!

These shows are not only a source of inspiration for the Design/Build industry, it is a time for us to network with each other, see new products and see how we can better serve our clients. This year to say everyone was ECSTATIC to gather together and share ideas again would be an understatement.

RYAN LAHAIE WITH 42° NORTH ARCHITECTS

What's important when you are building a family vacation home?

This was a question that was asked often by lead architect, Ryan LaHaie from 42° North Architecture and Design while meeting with the homeowners of this lake front cottage.

The resounding answer was a place for everyone to gather and for memories to be made. To Ryan, this meant utilizing every square inch to its FULL potential.

He translated this vision by having an open concept living space that included the kitchen, dining room and family room areas all together.

What makes this area truly unique and special however is that the longest wall in the space is entirely glass over looking the lake. This feature makes the division between the inside and out almost indistinguishable which is exactly what the homeowners had hoped for.

In addition to capturing the views from the outside, Ryan crafted the design in the kitchen to include an open ceiling that captures the natural light from the dormer in the front foyer. It was this detail, among others that earned this summer getaway's kitchen the 2021 Gold Best in American Living Award (BALA) for the Kitchen.

The kitchen was also packed with storage space with the floor to ceiling white shaker style cabinets with simple, classic black handles. The clean white design is accented by the sleek appliances from

Monogram. They fit perfectly against the back drop with the white subway tile backsplash.

Designer on the project, Julie Kay knew how important it was to keep the design light and beach-y which explains why she chose the perfect clear glass pendant lights for over the massive island. They offer just the right amount of light and symmetry without distracting from the design of the space.

To pack the most into this open concept living space, the team at Lown Homes created a custom built-in for the family room to house the Samsung FrameTV as well as family board games and more storage.

This bunkhouse won a Silver BALA Award for the category of 'Specialty Room/Project'.

We think the judges loved it as much as we did, because they can just imagine the memories made out at the lake with siblings and cousins telling tales of the days' adventures as they drift off to dream land.

This bunkhouse utilized the space in between the 2 guest rooms to provide the maximum amount of sleeping capacity with built in storage and the beach-y style the homeowners were seeking.

MEET THE ARCHITECT42° NORTH ARCHITECHTURE + DESIGN The driving force behind 42° North’s boutique experience is the owner and principal Ryan La Haie. Like most people who develop a unique skill into a career, Ryan knew from a very young age he loved architecture; its forms, materials, and craftsmanship. Growing up in the woods and water of Northern Michigan, it was Ryan’s grandmother who saw the spark and encouraged him to channel his creativity into drawing. Her intuition set into motion Ryan’s passion for creating spaces for families to gather and grow that would last for a lifetime.

Ryan and his team have been winning awards on their Michigan home designs for years and have been featured in numerous publications.

Hi, I’m Julie.

I’m on a mission to help people feel more content and peaceful in their own homes by sharing my passion for color and simplicity.

Color is in everything we see and touch – and color can impact how we feel. If you start by understanding how color undertones interact with each other, you’re on your way to creating a pleasing space. In fact, once you understand how to identify the correct color undertones, everything else about designing your home becomes easier.

In the same way, embracing simplicity in your home removes stress. Making selections will become clearer, and you’ll only end up with things in your home that you truly love.

Through educational workshops and one-on-one design services, I help bring these principles to life in people’s homes, so you can live COLORFULLY and SIMPLY ever after.

The second story was all about the focus on the family. When you go up the stairs you have the option to go right and enter the large bonus room above the garage that is perfect for watching a movie, playing games or relaxing with loved ones. To the left are the sleeping quarters that includes two identical bedrooms for the adults complete with a bench seat in the dormers overlooking the lake.

Splitting the two rooms is the bunkhouse and bathroom that is shared by the floor. This space will no doubt be a place where memories are made by this family for many years into the future.

It was a WONDERFUL evening showcasing the talent that is throughout our community! Congratulations to all of the winners!

COMMUNITY Every once in awhile, our community surprises me and on a cold winter night at a local restaurant, the Honey Creek Inn, was no exception. Before dinner, I went in to wash my hands after working all day on a jobsite and a woman named Nicole, stopped me to ask me if my red glasses were from the 'movement'.

I laughed....'No, they are because I'm getting old' I said, 'and I just like the color red!' She responded that she didn't believe that I had never heard of it and that I just HAD to know about the sweet little Audrey Lou! ❤️ The Red Glasses Movement was started in honor of a very special 5-year old girl, Audrey Jandernoa, who passed away in 2018.

Audrey was born with Down Syndrome and a congenital heart

defect, but these were not things that defined her.

Audrey was defined by her bright Red Glasses, her contagious smile, and her lack of inhibitions. She went through life like a little bulldozer, pushing her way through every door possible to achieve her goals again and again. She had a way of loving indiscriminately and without restrictions. She was a shining example of love, kindness, and courage in this world.

Education Spotlight On a recent trip to Austin, Texas we visited the Ketra Experience Center for a demonstration of everything this NEW lighting is capable of. We also were given a private tour of the BEAM facility where these lights are manufactured and tested, right here in the USA. Ketra is beautiful, tunable and customizable lighting fixtures. What does that mean for you?

Well it means that you can tune your lighting to any color you desire, which may feel like a once a year type of thing for the Christmas Holidays, but it actually means SO much more than that!

Having a full spectrum of color in your lighting means that we can dial in just the right temperature of what color for any time of the day. For example, a warm light in the early morning and evening is more natural for your eyes to see. Where a cooler and brighter light is better when you are doing tasks throughout the peak time of the midday. Ketra has a range of 1,400Kelvin to 10.000Kelvin color temperature.

The range in color is important because it can allow us to enhance the light and increase the VIBRANCY. We learned on our tour just how impactful this can be to the finishes in your space like the flooring, hard surfaces and fabrics.

When a builder is building their own home, it can go one of two ways and when Brian Huffman, Principle at Huffman Homes set out to build his personal dream home for his family, he wasn't taking any chances. He secured the design services of the talented Ryan LaHaie from 42° North Architecture + Design and brought together the list of the needs of his family as well as his vision of pushing the boundaries wherever possible to create a European Chalet inspired masterpiece for his family.

BRIAN PULLED TOGETHER A DREAM TEAM TO ACCOMPLISH HIS EUROPEAN CHALET INSPIRED DREAM HOME It all started with the desire to have story book fantasy inspired concave curved lines at the dormers and Ryan's design took off from there.

This home was designed to be elegant, but also comfortable for a growing family to live in daily. The Great Room was a lesson in balance and symmetry where both the architect and the designer, Becky had to come together on the vision.

They provide expert-grade invisible speakers, specialty environmental speakers that can withstand all of the elements that Michigan can throw at them and unique outdoor video solutions like the Transformer, a revolutionary hidden outdoor theater system designed to fold away into its weatherized, fiberglass enclosure and fit discretely on a yacht or home deck.

The fireplace was the central focus, and was flanked by two matching custom built-ins, a look that Becky carried over when she furnished the space with two matching sofas around the central coffee table and positioned two leather club chairs opposite the fireplace.

We knew this wouldn't be the main space in the home for entertainment, but would be used occasionally, so we opted for a Samsung FrameTV for over the fireplace with an added custom frame from Deco TV Frame, allowing art to be displayed when the TV is off. This allows them to display family portraits or artwork most of the time making it just a beautiful formal living space.

The designer also used a classic palette with mostly muted grey and clay colors, but to give it a 'collected' look, many of the metals were mixed. The main floor powder room was classic with brass finishes in the sconces, the hardware and even the legs on the console sink. This was repeated in the kitchen, however, the Master Ensuite Bathroom was finished with nickel and the laundry and lower levels had minimalist matte black pulls and finishes that gave the home a curated and collected feel.

Custom details were everywhere since this of course wasn't Brian's first rodeo, he knew what he wanted from years of experience. This was very apparent in the kitchen bar area where custom cabinets and panels for appliances created a perfect seamless custom look and feel. Everything from the refrigerator, to the wine fridge to the ice maker, and coffee maker right down to the perfectly fit television. Every detail was thought out so it is the perfect fit and the symmetry is amazing.

Additionally, since Brian was building his own home and using it as an experience space for his clients, he wanted to push the envelope when it came to the technology he used. He knew that music was important to his family, so there would need to be a distributed audio system, but it needed to be easy to use and in some of the spaces, it was important that you just heard the music, but didn't see anything. This led us to working with Stealth Acoustics for their INVISIBLE speakers for the dining room and the kitchen. Brian had worked with different companies in the past on invisible speakers, but he hadn't been impressed, but he

trusted us at TruMedia. He and his family were blown away at the sound from the Stealth speakers and it happens to be one of his favorite features in the home now.

Brian also allowed us to design his home with a Lutron Lighting Control system. It was his first time using that in a home, but the lighting became one of the most important features as he really wanted to keep his walls and backsplash clean.

Since this was going to be Brian's forever family home, it was important that everyone had their own spaces. A kids loft was added near Brian's daughters Jill & Jill ensuite and their son had a special desk area in his room that was perfect for his homework and his gaming passion!

Mom and dad also each had to have a space to work, so they developed 'his' and 'hers' offices.

These reflect their personal tastes and styles.

Overall this home was not only able to keep true to the European design, but keep all of the modern and technology amenities for a large growing family.

The Professional Women in Building Council (PWB) is the voice of women in the local building industry. We have a local Greater Grand Rapids Chapter. Join us this month as we CELEBRATE Women in Construction Week March 6-12, 2022.

This week is a time to highlight all the great initiatives and work of women within the industry. Likewise, it is a time that brings forward the opportunities that are available to women in construction.

Women in Construction Week traces the history of women in construction, their challenges, and the ways they’ve been able to overcome them. The holiday is observed to appreciate the women who have taken the bold step to enter the construction industry, and also to encourage those willing to make similar commitments.

As the month of February began, many in the design and build industry made the trek to Orlando, Florida to see what was the latest and greatest at the International Builders’ Show (IBS) and Kitchen and Bath International Show (KBIS). The Orange County Convention Center welcomed over 70,000 professionals in the industry, and they did not disappoint this year.

The initial feel was the excitement of being able to just connect with friends and industry partners that we haven't been able to connect with face-to-face in almost two years. As you can see in the following pictures, there were of course a lot of opportunities to get selfies with friends and to feel the kinship with one another. The range mixed the stainless steel with brass details and a uniquely hidden pot filler.

They were also very forward thinking in their beach environment that included beach-y wood cabinets. It had an island that housed appliances that appeared to float because they were covered in a

Café Appliances chose to be bold taking inspiration directly from the design masters by creating a gorgeous kitchen reflective of their muse, Iris Apfel. This bold green and black kitchen is where we found the rose gold details on the matte black appliances. The beautiful detail of a variety of bold green, white Wall Smartand black mosaic tiles was on not only the kitchen backsplash, but covering the hood in a lovely ombré blended design. They also featured a vignette that brought back all our favorite white appliances with a bold new twist. They were matte white with bold matte black pulls. They looked amazing in their kitchen that also showcased bold curves and a bright

Dana's vision for the house was to utilize

As it was also the first time for Dana to work with an integration firm like TruMedia, she learned a lot about technology along the way.

Knowing that TruMedia had prewired the home for automatic window shades that could open and close throughout the day to limit sun exposure and help to regulate the temperature to create a more efficient home was an exciting idea for her. “Knowing these

types of features can be added during the construction phase is vital to incorporating technology into my designs and making homes more functional for my clients!”, says Dana.

Asked her favorite part of the project, Dana would tell you, “That’s easy…it is the homeowners. They are a fantastic family that truly love every inch of the space we created for them. For me as a designer, that’s why I do what I do and how I judge a successful project!” said Dana.
