t’s no secret that I’m an aesthete: I love and have a special appreciation for beauty in all things: the human form, art, nature, and of course fashion! Determining what to wear on a daily basis isn’t (or shouldn’t be) merely a practical decision - its an important part of self expression, and as such it bears talking about in the context of overall health and well being. When we feel like the truest, best version of ourselves, inside and out, we tend to be healthier, happier humans. With this in mind, let’s talk about the importance of style.
So what is “style” exactly? And how does it differ from “fashion?” I think the great designer Yves St. Laurent described it best, “Fashions fade, style is eternal.” Style isn’t necessarily about what is “fashionable” in the moment, rather it is an enduring thing that allows you to present your unique self to the world in the truest, best possible way. Style is about more than just the clothes you wear: it’s in your voice, how you carry yourself, your posture, your grooming… All of these things combined - including your choice of fashion - create an overall impression, a calling card that tells people “this is who I am.”
When it comes to my own personal style, the story of “who I am” is largely informed by my work: most people know me as a surgeon and aesthetic provider, and as such I want to be seen as meticulous, attentive to detail, decisive and confident. That means my hair is tidy, my suit is tailored to fit perfectly and pressed, my socks always make a statement... Everything is chosen and applied with care with precision, even my surgical scrubs are custom! What I wear in the operating room is equally as important as what I wear to the office, >>
TO SHOW YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF TO THE WORLD REQUIRES COURAGE, BUT THERE IS NOTHING MORE REWARDING! MAKE A PROMISE TO YOURSELF TO STOP HIDING AND EMBRACE A STYLE THAT IS UNIQUELY “YOU.”
>> because I want people (especially patients) to know that I bring the same energy to every setting. On evenings and weekends, I want all those same characteristics to shine through, but I also want to show people that I can relax and have a bit of fun. On these occasions I’ll experiment a bit more with fashion - choosing edgier looks, more adventurous colors or relaxed fits - always adding a bit of polish to everything.
uch of what I’ve learned about style, I learned from my wife Dr. Lisa Airan. She has impeccable taste, and her ability to pull together stand out looks on the red carpet has deservedly earned her a place on many a best-dressed list. I have definitely learned about the importance of planning from her: great style is intentional and thoughtful,
so you should take the time to really plan out how you want to look and feel, and how you want others to respond to you as well. Style should be a conscious choice you make, not an afterthought!
hen developing one’s own personal style, it’s also important to remember: there are no mistakes. There is no rule that can’t (or hasn’t already) been broken when it comes to style and fashion that’s what keeps it interesting! There is however, an energy that is lost when one’s “look” doesn’t allow their individuality to shine through. I do think oftentimes, I see people “hiding” underneath layers of artifice - there is something unnecessary or inauthentic about their style or fashion. Sometimes style is about doing away with the extraneous and just allowing one’s self to be seen. To show your authentic self to the world 10
requires courage, but there is nothing more rewarding! Make a promise to yourself to stop hiding and embrace a style that is uniquely “you.”
ast but not least, I think its important that your style evolves. Internal and external factors in our lives are always changing: our bodies physically change, our environment changes (ie. work, climate, our network of friends and family, etc). We naturally need to adapt to these changes in order to remain authentic - because the more authentic our expression of style is, the more confident and attractive we feel. Again - it’s not about following a set of rules that tells you what you can and can’t wear, it’s about not becoming so static that your style is devoid of life. Just keep moving, keep growing, allow for experimentation - and never stop having fun! //

TMB STYLE 101: 1. MAKE AN EFFORT. Yes, we’re all busy and have important things to do - but caring about how you look isn’t just a “frivolous thing.” When you put effort into your appearance, it shows, and tells people a story about “who you are.” Make sure the story you are telling is a positive one. 2. DON’T HIDE. A famous passage by Marianne Williamson comes to mind, “ Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you...” Don’t be afraid to be the best dressed person in the room: show the world the beautifully unique person you are and own it. 3. PLAN IT OUT. Great style doesn’t require a lot of money, it’s more about the time you take to plan, and the care with which you choose your wardrobe. 4. EVOLVE. Life isn’t static, make sure your wardrobe isn’t either. 5. PLAY. Fashion is fun! Don’t be afraid to incorporate fashion trends into your wardrobe and experiment a little with edgier pieces. 6. MAKE SURE IT FITS. Even the most beautiful garments look shabby when they don’t fit properly. Buying off the rack is fine, but spend a few dollars on tailoring to ensure you look sharp. 7. DETAILS, DETAILS, DETAILS. It’s all in the details! The right accessory can take a simple outfit to the next level. A great timepiece, a colorful pocket square, a cool pair of socks, they all go a long way toward establishing a memorable style. 8. RELAX. The last thing you should be doing is stressing about your wardrobe. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that you are more than just the clothes you wear.

FUTURE OF THE
FAC I A L Photography by Billie Chiasson
ow far would you go to attain the perfect complexion? If you were an Elizabethan woman living in the late 1500’s, you might have applied Venetian Ceruse (a poisonous skin lightening mixture of white lead and vinegar) to achieve the coveted pale white skin that was popular at the time. During Victorian times, mercury laced creams were used to clear blemishes. In the early 1900’s, women flocked to day spas for radium infused mud masques that promised to smooth away fine lines and wrinkles and restore a youthful glow. Thankfully, the facial has come a long way since the toxic treatments of the past. Modern facial techniques emphasize safety and efficacy (under an experienced guiding hand), utilizing high quality medical grade ingredients and proven technology to achieve noticeable results... >>
THE ÂŽ CELLUMA LED FA C I A L Illuminate your skincare with the Celluma LED phototherapy facial - a treatment that employs light energy to improve cellular health by accelerating the repair and replenishment of compromised tissue cells. Research has shown that phototherapy can kill acne bacteria, decrease inflammation, and improve skin tone, texture and clarity. HOW IT WORKS: In the same way that plants use chlorophyll to convert sunlight into plant tissue, high intensity light emitting diodes (LEDs) utilizing specific wavelengths of UV free light can trigger a natural biostimulatory effect in human tissue. Our cells absorb particles of light (photons) and transform their energy into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the form of energy that cells utilize. Simply put, the LED light source provides compromised cells with added energy so the cells performance is enhanced. For example, fibroblast cells will increase collagen and elastin production for improved skin elasticity and firmness. HOW IS IT DIFFERENT? Cleared by the FDA for pain management and skin care, Celluma is safe, clinically proven, requires no additional topical products and is completely non-invasive - you simply lie underneath the LED panel for the duration of the 30 minute treatment and let the light do its work. WHO IS IT FOR? This quick and easy facial treatment is ideal for all skin types and people on the go who want to maintain glowing, healthy skin. LED light therapy is an effective anti-aging treatment - increasing collagen and elastin for improved skin firmness and resilience, and the device can also be used to clear existing acne breakouts and diminish acne bacteria for clearer skin overall.
THE P L AT E L E T RICH PLASMA FAC I A L The platelet rich plasma (PRP) facial - popularly referred to as “The Vampire Facial,” combines microneedling with the application of growth factor-rich plasma to stimulate collagen production in the skin. Microneedling with PRP can be used to treat acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, and improve skin’s elasticity and firmness. HOW IT WORKS: The patient’s blood is drawn and then processed via a centrifuge to extract the platelet rich plasma - the “liquid gold” like material rich in growth factors which has been shown to aid in the regeneration of soft tissue. Microneedling is a procedure where tiny needles create controlled micro-perforations in the skin, which act as channels for the topically applied PRP. The treatment triggers the skin’s natural healing response, sending collagen to the injured tissues and resulting in improved skin tone and texture. HOW IS IT DIFFERENT? The PRP facial uses your own natural elements and the body’s inherent healing mechanisms to improve the skin, without the addition of any foreign products (which could potentially cause an allergic reaction). WHO IS IT FOR? Most patients are good candidates for this facial treatment, particularly those with mild to medium acne scarring and pigmentation. Because it boosts collagen, it's also a good treatment for improving overall skin quality and health. It is not recommended for severe acne scarring or active acne, those who have a history of poor wound healing, or people on blood thinners. 20
THE ® ENVIRON IONZYME FAC I A L Plug in and turbo-charge your skincare with the Environ® Ionzyme facial - a patented treatment that harnesses electro-sonic technology to penetrate the skin’s resistant water barrier with high-grade dermaceuticals. The result? Increased collagen and elastin levels, better hydration, a reduction of fine lines and hyperpigmentation and improved overall skin vitality. HOW IT WORKS: Using a combination of Pulsed Iontophoresis (the electronic part of the technology) and Low Frequency Sonophoresis (the sound wave part of the technology), the device is able to deliver powerful doses of skin essential nutrients (such as vitamin A and C, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid) into the dermis. HOW IS IT DIFFERENT? Because our skin has a strong natural water barrier, topical products can only penetrate a small amount, limiting their efficacy. Basically - all those expensive products we put on our skin can only do so much, because they aren’t actually reaching the deeper layers of the dermis. With the Environ DF machine, skincare therapists are able to penetrate serums 4000% deeper than manual topical application for a truly transformative effect. WHO IS IT FOR? Because the treatment uses an electric current, it is not recommended for pregnant women and those with underlying medical conditions and/or pacemakers. For everyone else - the Ionzyme facial is suitable for all skin types, even those with the most delicate complexions. A course of 4-6 facials can yield fantastic results for people with sun damage, photo-aging, fine lines, and pigmented or scarred skin. //

INTRODUCING: THE INSTITUTE OF HUMAN MECHANICS People are living longer than ever before. In fact, the World Health Organization estimates that by 2020, the number of people aged 60 years and older will outnumber children younger than five years. As the wealthiest generation in history, baby boomers are spending more than ever on rejuvenating treatments that allow them to not only live longer, but better. They’re not alone: millennials have embraced “pre-juvenation,” starting treatments in their 20s that are designed to slow down the aging process. Men and women of all ages want to feel good and look as good as they feel, but some might suggest a gap exists between the ability for facilities to innovate and adapt to meet the demand for regenerative care in Canada. The Institute of Human Mechanics (IHM) aims to fill this void in the marketplace and transform regenerative healthcare for the better. Founded by Dr. Tony Galea, IHM was built to transform the patient-practitioner experience by providing a new, higher standard of healthcare to patients. “I believe there is a particular kind of patient that, up until now, hasn’t been adequately served,” Dr. Galea tells us. “They really take care of themselves - staying active and eating right. We wanted to create a facility that gives patients every advantage in the fight against aging and help them to function at their peak performance level by offering a variety of treatments.” In addition to treatments primarily focused on sports medicine – specifically, muscle, ligament and tendon injuries, IHM services also include the treatment of osteoarthritic hip and knee ailments with an emphasis on Dr. Galea’s area of expertise platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP) and non-invasive aesthetic procedures.
“The concept for IHM centres around high-performance health care; and the idea of a one-stop-shop, where a team of experts can treat the patient internally and externally. These types of all-inclusive treatment centres are common in Europe.” Dr. Galea explains. “We wanted to bring that concept here to Canada and that’s what led to the partnership with Trevor.” He’s speaking of none other than plastic surgeon (and founder of TMB magazine) Dr. Trevor Born. So how exactly did these two doctors on a mission to transform our overall health and longevity connect in the first place? “I first met Tony as a patient, he administered PRP for a knee injury I had at our first appointment - which was a game changer for me. I can honestly say it made a huge difference in my life.” Dr. Born tells us. “That was eight years ago, and I’ve since had subsequent treatments for my knees and elbows. I believed then that if his PRP was effective in healing injury of the soft tissues in my case, it could potentially have cosmetic applications as well such as skin health and hair restoration. We started to collaborate and became good friends, so when he approached me to collaborate at IHM, it was easy to say yes.” >>
Photography by Miguel Jacob
“WE’VE REALLY BUILT THE MODEL FOR THIS OUTPOST OF THE INSTITUTE OF HUMAN MECHANICS AROUND THOSE PATIENTS WITH TIME CONSTRAINTS, WITHOUT SACRIFICING THE QUALITY OF THEIR TREATMENTS.”
Aesthetic services offered at IHM include everything from custom facials and general skincare to EMsculpt, a muscle building machine that uses electromagnetic energy to contract your muscles - half an hour hooked up to your abs is equivalent to doing 20,000 sit ups! But I’m most interested in the treatments that highlight the unique collaboration between the two doctors, namely the application of Dr. Galea’s PRP to some of the esthetic treatments provided by Dr. Born, such as microneedling facials.
“No one wants to take weeks out from their lives for recovery,” says Dr. Born. “We’ve really built the model for this outpost of IHM around those patients with time constraints without sacrificing the quality of their treatments.”
Put simply, components of our own blood can now be used to revive our aging hips and knees, and improve our skin. All of these treatments can be done in one place without long recovery times or red-faced postprocedure inflammation. That’s right: everything currently on offer at IHM can be done in-office, with minimal to no downtime.
“I would love to have the IHM concept expand and encompass multiple services around this model of the one-stop-shop for health & wellness,” Dr. Galea says. “We would have a variety of doctors practicing out of IHM - from Orthopedics to Micro-surgery for cartilage regeneration. It would also serve as a research hub, so that the team is not only performing procedures, but innovating day-to-day and proving what works and what doesn’t.”
“What I’ve learned after 23 years in practice is this: the biggest barrier for patients is time.”
The promise of agility and beauty all in one easy to access location sounds like (ahem) just what the doctor ordered. So what’s next for IHM? No less than worldwide expansion.
“Our team will not simply follow the status quo, we’ll make things better.” As we wrap up our interview, I can’t help but get excited about bringing my whole family to IHM for a visit. My super-active mom, who loves lifting weights like the Terminator but hates the 70- yearold hips that keep her from racking up that next ten pounds; my dad, who loves cycling but doesn’t get out as much because his knees bother him; even my 31-year-old sister, whose “pre-juvenation” routine includes all the lasers, Botox, EMsculpt and whatever else she can afford to stave off the pitfalls of aging. That’s the beauty of this concept that Dr. Born and Dr. Galea have created: if you need a tune-up whether you’re silver haired or just entering your 30s - Tony and Trevor are invested in helping you win the race against aging, with style to spare. //

k. FEATURING HANYA KIZEMCHUK PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATHERINE HOLLAND HAIR & MAKEUP BY ERIN WINN
hen I was a young lady I had a burning desire to model. I was completely captivated by the business and I would plaster my walls with photographs torn from fashion magazines. So one day, in a typically impulsive "Hanya" move, I went and bought a one way ticket to Milan and flew off with nothing but a few dollars and the address of a top modelling agency in my pocket. I literally didn't know a soul there, and I had nowhere to stay, so I just went straight from the airport to the modelling agency and told them "Hello, my name is Hanya and I want to be a fashion model."
"Thankfully, they found me a place to stay, and within two days they chopped off my waist length blonde hair into the short haircut I wear to this day and put me to work. I kept working as a model until I essentially “aged out” in my late twenties, at which point I shifted my focus to working in real estate and (eventually) raising my child. For thirty five years, I did those things proudly and successfully, and I thought that my time as a model was a thing of the past. Imagine my surprise and delight when, at 62 years of age, I was encouraged to step back into the world of modelling and fashion!" 33
"That was about six weeks ago and already I’ve signed with a new agency, walked in Toronto fashion week, and appeared on the cover of this magazine. It just goes to show you how much has changed in the beauty and fashion world: aging is no longer taboo, it's chic!" "I am so happy to be a part of this growing movement of older women making strides in the industry. Beauty is so diverse - and I think we are finally living in a time where this diversity is not only recognized, but prioritized and celebrated." >>
“WOMEN DON’T NECESSARILY WANT TO LOOK YOUNGER THAN THEY ARE. WHAT WE REALLY WANT IS TO LOOK AND FEEL OUR BEST. WE DON’T WANT TO HIDE OUR AGE, WE WANT TO FLAUNT IT AND SAY, “HEY! DON’T I LOOK AMAZING? I THINK I DO.”
think the industry is also finally realizing: women don’t necessarily want to look younger than they are. What we really want is to look and feel our best. We don’t want to hide our age, we want to flaunt it and say, “Hey! Don’t I look amazing? I think I do!” That’s certainly how I feel - I’m not twenty anymore, and I don’t want to be. But do I work on myself to make sure I’m happy with what I see in the mirror? Absolutely. Everyday.” “You’ve got to put in the work. That’s the thing about getting older - you can’t be as passive about things, you have to be proactive and really work at taking care of yourself otherwise it shows. For me, the work involves being very aware of what I eat, staying active and getting enough rest.”
“I’ve actually received more compliments from total strangers in the last couple of years than I ever did when I was modelling in my twenties. I think that speaks to the overall attitude shift towards aging. When I recently walked the runway for fashion week, I even had some of the young models approach me and ask, “What is your secret?” My answer was, and is always the same, “Whatever it takes.” That “secret” formula is different for everyone - whether its a daily yoga class or a weekly game of golf, or a visit to someone like Dr. Born - you have to do whatever it takes to keep you feeling your best. If you do that - if you can make that investment in yourself - it pays off in so many ways, not just for yourself but for those around you, because positivity is infectious!”
“When those young models approached me at fashion week, I was absolutely thrilled to talk with them - because getting older should not be some kind of mystery. It is an absolute privilege and a joy to get older! We don’t have to hide anything about it. That is one of the main reasons I agreed to do this article, because I’ve got nothing to hide and sixty-something years of wisdom to share.” “It all ties in to a mantra that I practice daily and it is simply this: “I truly seek to understand.” I think that the more we seek and encourage understanding among one another, the more fulfilling and authentic our own individual lives will be. So lets get on it with it and start more of these important conversations about aging and beauty!” //
n a beautiful summer evening in June, guests of Dr. Trevor Born and Dr. Tony Galea happily celebrated the grand opening of the Institute of Human Mechanics, a brand new shared facility that offers patients regenerative medicine alongside aesthetic procedures. Guests sipped on Moet & Chandon Champagne and snacked on freshly shucked oysters while listening to the magnificent musical improvisations of electric violinist Victoria Yeh. The stylish crowd was a veritable who’s-who of the Toronto social scene, with many notable celebrities and VIPs in attendance. // PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN EMBERLEY
