WHO AM I? My name is Troy Coker. I am a 20 year old human male, born in New Zealand. I am currently in my second year of study in a bachelor of creative industries at Toi Ohomai. At this point in time, I am employed as a graphic design intern, working at a marketing agency. Cool nice okay. Throughout my life I have had an interest in art and design. My passion can be found in game development, which I see as a bridge between both art and graphic design. I also have an interest in drawing with pencil, which I use as a pass-time in order to cope with existential crisis. Who would have guessed that humans like to have a reason to exist?

INSPIRATION FF Graffio Difensivo

Texture in typeface can have an interesting effect. Different textures can portray entirely different connotative feels. FF Graffio Difensivo is a good example of a textured typeface. The designer, Alessio Leonardi, has created it with a texture denoting pencil marks. This has been composed in a messy, stylised look, providing an interesting typeface. I have drawn inspiration from this in the development of Wytchtype, trying to create my own version of a sketchy look.

INSPIRATION Plague Master

This typeface by David Kerkhoff provides an interesting effect on the eye. Each letter is composed of a mixture of angular and curved forms, along with a rough texture. As the name suggests, this typeface has an underlying connotative idea of a plague or sickness. This is expressed effectively through each letter. I have drawn inspiration from this typeface, in the way it has used angular forms and rough textures.

WYTCHTYPE Wytchtype has been designed as a display typeface Wytchtype is a typography inspired by the historical view of witches and witchcraft. The viewer’s eye catches on certain points within words, making it uncomfortable and slightly difficult to read. Legibility is tested with each letter, but only to the point where reading starts to become strained. An uneasy balance is struck between the viewer and the type, drawing the eye yet repelling it at the same time. Angular forms and scratched textures were used to develop the typeface. These textures appear to be drawn as if the pencil where held in a fist, rather than by fingers. This helps portray feelings of aggression and anger. Each angle is composed of several strokes, adding to the idea of projecting these emotions. A rough texture has also been used. This texture gives the feel of charcoal of thick lead being used to ‘write’ the type. Witchcraft has often been a point of anger and fear among people of the past, leading to many murders of innocents. Ignorance and hatred have been directed towards women. It was during the 15th century where this was exhibited through the use of witch trials. Patriarchal systems perpetuated this, with men believing killing women was righteous. Emotions of anger have been portrayed in this typography in order to represent witchcraft. At first, the viewer may assume it is a typography of witches, through the brutality present. The real meaning behind it is ironically contrary, representing the killers of ‘witches’ instead.
