THE TWO HORSES OF GENGHIS KHAN

EYES WIDE OPEN (EINAYM PKUHOT)

THE TWO HORSES OF GENGHIS KHAN forteller historien til en ung kvinne, Urna. Den gamle mongolske sangen, “The Two Horses of Genghis Khan”, var inngravert på fiolinens hals.

This is certainly not the Norwegian film about free skiing, but a film about love between men in an ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Jerusalem. Aaron is a respectable butcher in Jerusalem’s ultra-Orthodox community, is married to Rivka and father to four children. Aaron is looking for assistance in his business when a handsome young Yeshiva student Ezira shows up in his shop. Aaron decides to be Ezira’s patron and invites him to meals in his home and houses Ezira in the shop’s back room. When they go together to a remote “Mikve” (a sacred ritual bath), an intimate moment occurs between them, and for Aaron there is no returning after this point. Through a tender and poetic visual language we get a rare insight into the life in an orthodox Jewish community. Eyes Wide Open was screened in the Un Certain Regard programme during the 2009 Cannes festival. NB: Norwegian subtitles.

GERMANY 2009 director: Byambasuren Davaa screenplay: Byambasuren Davaa cinematography: Martijn van Broekhuizen

THE TWO HORSES OF GENGHIS KHAN tells the story of a young woman, Urna. Urna’s grandmother was forced to destroy her once loved violin in the tumult of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The ancient song of the Mongols, “The Two Horses of Genghis Khan”, was engraved on the violin’s neck. Only the violin’s neck and head survived the cultural storm. Urna, driven by a promise to her deceased grandmother, journeys throughout Mongolia to have the violin rebuilt, and to locate the song’s missing verses.
