Symbio‧City Academic Year 2017-2018 MArch Advanced Architectural Design Year 2 Grangemouth, Scotland

“Symbiosis is any type of a close and long-term biological interaction between two different biological organisms, be it mutualistic, commensalistic, or parasitic.” The concept of Symbiocity is to create a symbiotic environment for human and micro-organism - microalgae. 12

The idea is to create a Microalgae Farm to cultivate our energy. The process of growing microalgae will acquire CO2, it can help to solve the global warming issue. Then when the microalgae are mature, they can be generated as a clean biofuel, then solve the air pollution problem.

The proposed programs will be Microalgae Greenhouse Cultivation & Factory, Science Centre & Laboratory, Global Warming & Air Pollution Museum and Oxygen Cafe.

Purification Cultivation Regeneration

Carbon Capture Filters install at the Oil Refinery. It can capture up to 90% CO2.

Carbon Dioxide will be filtered and collected then through pipe transfer to the Algae Farm. Algae Cultivation Process Source: growenergy.org

Mature Algae can convert as clean Algal Oil and Biomass, then refine as Biofuels such as Biodiesel and Jet fuel and also spare material generate at the refinery process can be produced as animal feed.

Building is design along the site.

The cut from the corner of the site, create an entranceto draw people attention and welcome visitor.

Sunpath Direction Building is facing to the south, It can obtain the biggest sun light.

Inspire Hub Community Library & Learning Centre Glasgow, Scotland From the research and analysis, we found that Govan is lack of learning space for the locals. Also there are two primary schools and one nursery school sharing one campus. Children in Govan do not have enough support for their studies. In addition, the library space and book collection are insufficient as well. Therefore, a community library & learning centre will be proposed for Govan. Since traditional library is not allowed people to talk. We need to keep quiet in the library. While the more can be learnt if you are willing to share. So the idea of Inspire Hub is to break the tradition. As the name implies, it gives people inspiration. It encourages people to talk in the library, share and discuss the knowledge. Inspire Hub is not only a platform for people come to learn, it also creates a community for the local and reconnect to the outside Govan.

Ever since the 6 industries have been proposed by the Hong Kong Government, people in Hong Kong have been drawn and waiting for the emerge of our cultural and creative industries. However, it is lack of support for this expertise. The need to call on a full range or latest released references is summoned to equip the design schools in Hong Kong. That leads to the birth of ‘themed library’, which enables campus and non-campus users to access to the essential information without barriers. Studary is a mix of studio and library, a platform for design students to nurture peer learning, operation and fresh ideas. Design Concept: Movement of Calligraphy & Ink.

Ancient Traditional Chinese Word: Luo, means rope (Knotting), homonyms as Cantonese happiness. Luo is a chair designed with the Chinese Knotting concept. It brings out an important message that everyone would experience the illness and death. We cannot change the facts of getting ill but we can change the attitude on how to face the difficulties. When people understand the meaning of Luo, they will understand the meaning of happiness. Function: A bench that provides space for plants growing underneath. It can help to de-stress and light up the dull environment.
