RESEARCH

SOLAR HEAT ENERGY

RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES The city of Barcelona compiled several maps of the city to analyze the potential of buildings for wind energy, solar heat and photovoltaic energy. The results showed that the potential for wind energy, solar heat, and photovoltaic energy at the location of Torre Mapfre were all high.

LOCAL RESOURCES AND MATERIALS Catalan architecture is typically defined by the use of bricks and tiles. When used in the Catalan Vault method these bricks are held in place by a mixture of plaster and water, resulting in a strong and economical building method. This method also means that no steel formwork is needed, the tiles are laid on top of each other in layers and lend support to the structure. It can offer the strength of reinforced concrete without the need for the use of steel, and also utilizes materials available locally such as terracotta tiles or bricks. This technique makes spaces fireproof and resistant to damp and insect damage without the need for chemical treatments.

GOAL AND CONCEPT

The space was designed as a homely atmosphere that can be an escape from the busy city life of Barcelona. The goal was to build a zero-emission home that is designed entirely concerning environmental conservation from the structure to the furniture. The design of the space is not just practical and beneficial to the environment. It is also inspired by Barcelona's colourful and fun style which creates an aesthetically joyful and cozy atmosphere

MINDÂ PALACE EXHIBITION DESIGN

MIND PALACE

The project "Mind Palace" was created by the concept of healthy forgetting and how the mind undergoes the process of forgetting certain information in order to create free space for new ones. The exhibition project started with in-depth research of the "free space" concept as something intangible. The project title "Mind Palace" is not related to the Method of Loci, the memory palace or the memory journey techniques.

LOCATION

MIND PALACE Piazza del Liberty Milan, Italy.

The Mind Palace exhibition is a temporary structure located in Piazza del Liberty in the city centre of Milan, Italy. The city of MIlan is known to be the second most populous city in Italy. The city is strongly supportive of the arts and design field and hosts a number of internationally recognized events and fairs such as the Milan Furniture Fair and Milan Fashion Week.

RESEARCH

FREESPACE The Mind Palace project started with research on how the term "freespace" can be applied as an intangible concept. It was then decided that the concept of the exhibition space will be based on the freespace within the human mind and the effects of it.

HEALTHY FORGETTING As the project advanced, healthy forgetting was chosen as a sub-topic because of its relevance to how the brain creates "freespace" in our minds by storing old information and memories into our mind palaces. Healthy forgetting is a natural process where our minds automatically declutter old memories and information that are no longer required. This process is to enable the mind to create freespace in order to absorb and store new information and memories.

STAGES OF HEALTHY FORGETTING

REPRESSION A memory goes into the mind palace and causes to brain to be unaware that the memory still exists.

Memories placed in the mind palace cannot be reached unless it's triggered by photographs, objects, people places, etc.

FORGETTING Creates space for new memories and information. A part of the brains natural cleaning process. Essential for healing PTSD.

Acts as a protective mechanism. Prevents unethical decisions and actions. Creates better focus. Isolates information that appears to be less important.

ACCUMULATION The brain accumulates information from past experiences and triggers reactions or emotions based on it.

The space in the brain builds up from the accumulation and removes "junk" then begins to keep important information, memories and experiences

GOAL AND CONCEPT

The exhibition space was carefully designed to be aesthetically pleasing and eye-catching to viewers and passersby. The colours and materials chosen for the exhibition also play a role in creating an active environment where the viewers will always be moving within the space. The goal of the exhibition is to enable the users to experience the process of healthy forgetting by displaying certain items that will be easily remembered and others that may be instantly discarded to their mind palace. The exhibition will enable a different experience for every viewer and allow them to conclude their experience based on what they remembered the most and what may have 'slipped their minds.'

The goal of the project is to create a visually attractive concept store based on the image built by the company. The store is designed and items are organized according to gender, style, and demand hence creating a strategy to increase sales.
