Dominica Courtesy of www.dominica.dm
Beauty unspoilt, culture preserved - a diver’s dream and hiker’s paradise. The trailhead to adventure and discovery unlike any other Caribbean destination –volcanic peaks, boiling waters, underwater champagne springs, sparkling waterfalls, rushing streams and rainforest canopies. Dominica sits midway along the Eastern Caribbean archipelago, just a few miles from Martinique to the south and Guadeloupe to the north. Its official name is the Commonwealth of Dominica, which is mostly referenced in official communiqués and to distinguish the island from its northerly Caribbean sister, the Dominican Republic. Known as “The Nature Island,” Dominica’s tropical rainforests cover two thirds of the island, and are home to 1,200 plant species. Rivers, lakes, streams, and waterfalls abound, fed by the island’s high annual rainfall. Its volcanic physique points to extensive geothermal activity – even underwater. The Morne Trois Pitons National Park was the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the eastern Caribbean. The island is sparsely populated with 70,000 people inhabiting its 289 square miles. A significant portion of the population lives in and around the capital city of Roseau. About 80% of the population is Roman Catholic. English is the official language, spoken with a melodic French lilt, but a large portion of the population speaks Kwèyòl (Creole), and a few northern villages speak Kokoy.

Curvaceously Chic Swimwear G’wan by Charon brings the Heat! By Sabrina Coleman
Issue 41 | July/August 2015 15
ith summer around the corner, I knew I had to check in with fashion designer Charon Richardson and see what she has up her sleeve for her highly anticipated swimwear collection this year. Last year I was honored to be a part of her first swimwear launch, which took place on the magnificent island of St. Croix. The completely captivated audience was blown away at her unique, fresh and brilliant take on plus size swimwear so I knew this year her collection had to be even greater! Here is what Charon has to say about her 2015 curvaceously chic swimwear collection.
W
I always had a flare for fashion as far back as I can remember. I was about 22 when I found I had the gift to create what I envisioned in my mind. Growing up in St. Croix I must admit I never knew that “Fashion Design” was a career choice. It never dawned on me that the clothing that I bought in the stores was once the images floating around in someone’s head. I took my first sewing class at 22 and remembered being so excited to try something new. Little did I know that that was the beginning of my gift blossoming. A few months later at the suggestion of my mentor, Mrs. Moorehead, I started my first semester at FIT in New York City.
What made you want to step out and creWhen did you first fall in love with fashion ate your own clothing line? and what lead you to a career in fashion? I worked as a designer for major fashion
companies for 16 years in NYC and have traveled the world for fashion. I saw a lack of clothing for women of my size. I designed for numerous brands and could never wear the clothing that I designed since they didn’t cater to plus size women. It was very frustrating. I would sit in meetings thinking one day I will have my own line that represents me. I didn’t’ see myself in the Ads or anywhere in the fashion world so it was hard to be a part of it. I created G’wan by Charon so I would have a voice with fabric and tread. How did you come up with the name of your clothing line, “G’wan by Charon?” I wanted a name that reflected my culture and my heritage as well as empower women. G’wan in my native tongue means “Go ahead.” I want women to go ahead and embrace who they are. We are all created in Gods’ amazing image, regardless of our size, shape or color. When did you decide to create your curvaceously chic swimwear collection for plus size women? I’m a true Island gyal at heart. When I left to go to FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology), I said I would have a swimwear line one day. I saw a lack of plus size contemporary fashion forward swimwear. Get real with The Basketball Wife Next Door by Carmen Gonzalez-Noain Larrinaga
Issue 41 40 | July/August March/April 2015 2015 21 21
The name Brandi Maxiell is synonymous with the reality TV series, Basketball Wives LA, however the star heeds that there is more to her than what is shown on television. “I am a child of God, Wife and Mother. Although things have been very difficult this past year for my family and I, it’s still my #1 priority.” Born in Dallas, Texas and raised by a single mother, the family had very little resources. Her Mom, an advocate for education fought hard to send her daughter to the best schools. The struggle was not in vain as Brandi graduated from The University of North Texas in 2007. The celebration of that success was overshadowed when she discovered that she had Ovarian Cancer. At only 24 years old, Brandi decided to move back to Dallas to undergo months of treatment and in 2008 was declared cancer free. At the time of her diagnosis, Brandi was engaged to Jason Maxiell, an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association. In 2009 the couple got married and planned on starting a family. Tragedy struck again when Brandi found out she could not have children. Undaunted by this devastating blow, she began extensive research on IVF and faced several failed attempts. Of the experience she remarks, “After a failed IVF with absolutely nothing to work with, I mean no egg follicle, nothing, they told me that I had no chance of getting pregnant and I needed a donor. That crushed me severely. I hate failure so I felt that this was yet another thing I failed at without any control. But that news wasn’t worse than the life or death battle I had with cancer. It was just a message for me to stay prayed up and depend on my Father above and nothing else.” Her prayers were answered and in 2011 the couple welcomed a healthy baby boy. Through her many hardships, Brandi remained strong with the help of family and friends. Today she shares her battle with cancer with women and is using Basketball Wives as a platform to educate. A fighter, she is an example for women around the world and vows to demonstrate how important it is to never give up and always keep fighting.
At 24 years old you were diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. Talk about your journey from being diagnosed to being cancer free. In my journey with cancer my mindset went from scared, to let’s do this, to ok I’m here now, to I’m over it, and then to “hell yea, I beat it!” I had a lot of ups and downs. It was mentally and physically draining. I literally had no life 7-8 months. I had to be careful with everything. I had cancer in the winter months so I couldn’t get out or go anywhere because I couldn’t take a chance on getting sick. How important is it to share your story of survival and why? It took a while for me to share my story. A lot of people that knew what happened called me crazy for not wanting to share it at first. No one that hasn’t been in my shoes would understand. It’s LITERALLY a life or death situation. The fact that I survived it was a blessing, but I still suffered the thought of what would happen if I didn’t. I had two life or death moments in a matter of a month. I had cancer and I had blood clots in my lungs. So I was terrified and thought ‘why me’ for years. When I finally got the courage to share my story, I was shocked to see the outpour of love and support from everyone. Are you involved with any charities dealing with Cancer? Right now I’m involved with NOCC, National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. How did your illness strengthen your relationship with husband Jason Maxiell? Jason and I were just engaged when I had cancer. So for him to be there and support me in the way he did I knew he was the one. It’s like he took some of the “for better, for worse...in sickness and in health” vows before marriage. At any time did your illness take a toll on the relationship? No it didn’t. It actually made it better. Jason was the one that actually wanted to get married as soon as he proposed. I didn’t. I wanted a long engagement and to live together for a couple years and just wait. But when I went through cancer he proved to me that I didn’t need to wait

The enTerTainmenT Business & You
The Art of Negotiation
By Shantell ‘Shanz’ Hill
The business of entertainment can prove to be either the best or the worst experience for young talents that are desperately seeking to make a mark. Whether you are an author, game developer, artist, audio-producer, filmmaker, or sporting talent, your growth and development in the industry of your choice is heavily dependent on your knowledge. Let’s start with a contract agreement – which essentially is proof of conversation that cements an agreement between two or more parties. This cementing is often a burden to those who are looking for that ‘break’ or emancipation from financial starvation. The aforementioned industries are highly competitive and ignorance at any level may cost you or reduce future opportunities that you have worked tirelessly toward.
In order to ensure a ‘win-win’ result in the process for all parties in a negotiation, specific principles need to be employed. Be Persuasive | Be it two hours or ten years that you have worked for this opportunity to have the contract of your dreams, be a David to a Goliath. Do not become sidetracked by the height and depth of the other party or company; be persuasive in your demand(s). Believe in the value of your brand, stick to your guns once your demand(s) are measurable and fair. A negotiation is a compromise therefore you should not leave the process feeling swindled.
Do Not Haggle | Haggling (a period of persistent bargaining) can be a turn-off to all parties. Overly dwelling and dragging the process on small or minor issues in the contract can result in disinterest, forcing Ones ability to successfully negotiate a parties to question true interest and contractual agreement is a skill set that possibly other options. any representative must possess. Jamaica is the reason I am even in this industry because it wasn’t until I lived there and attended High School on the island that I got involved with singing. It is more than an influence it is the key to my entire musical existence.
I had a number of years, before signing to a major label, where I worked a local underground Hip Hop scene. During those years I used to write, record and perform all my own material -paying my own professional recording costs etc. That process inspired my first single, “I Tired.” Years later I still write the majority of my material but I am not against taking an amazing song written by someone else and making it my own. Congratulations on signing a deal with Nick Cannon. How did that come about?
Thank you. I became a part of the NCredible family back in January of 2014. I randomly met Nick at a club event in Los Angeles where he was spinning in early 2013. 5 Tips to Keep Current With Your Career By Kerry-Ann Reid Brown 1. Quarterly Resume Update Create a calendar entry called “Career Audit: resume update” and set it to recur for every 3 months. Don’t wait until you’re job hunting to update your resume. For years I only looked at my resume when I was looking for a job. I dreaded the process because writing resumes is not an easy task. The process is even more overwhelming if the resume needs to be done while under pressure to find a new job due to unemployment. In addition, the longer the gap between using the resume, the harder it is to update. Reviewing and updating your resume on a quarterly basis is a great career move. A quarterly update isn’t just for in the event you need to switch jobs quickly but it’s also a good indication of where you are in your career and is the perfect starting point to conduct a career audit. It can be challenging to update your resume on your own but there are plenty of books to help you with the process. I have personally used Resume Magic and Packaging Yourself: The Targeted Resume. If that’s not your speed, you can try a resume writing service like Fiverr.com but use caution and go with highly rated sellers only.
2. Audit & Analysis The purpose of a career audit is to evaluate and improve. To do an audit & analysis, first make a list of what you want your career to look like. List the skills and experiences you currently have then list the skills and experiences you want to have and a date/ timeframe by which you want to have them by. It’s important to be realistic and give yourself enough time to achieve said goals. Be sure to date the list(s) to keep track of changes or updates because while it’s important to focus on where we want to be, it’s just as important that we are flexible enough to recognize when adjustments need to be made. Finally, reconcile where you are now compared to where you want to be. Determine the steps you need to take to get there, for example, do you need to take a course or take on more stretch assignments at work? Issue 41 | July/August 2015 37
3. Keep Track of Your Accomplishments It’s always important to keep track of your accomplishments at work. Depending on your company’s evaluation process you might have to do a self evaluation and this might come in handy as you go through the process. It’s important to keep track because resumes should be accomplishments focused as opposed to task focused. Writing down your accomplishments as it happens helps you and makes it easier to do your quarterly resume update. When you’re actively job hunting, the general rule is to customize your resume for each position and having a list of accomplishments allows you to easily select appropriate for the role. While some accomplishments will be on your resume, there should be others that you can call upon to use in your cover letters and interviews. No accomplishment is too small to track because you’ll
4. Join a Professional Association I know firsthand the importance of joining a professional organization or two. It’s not enough to join a professional organization but it’s important to be active by joining a committee or task force. This is a great way to meet other members, build relationships and your network. Being active on committees and task force also helps to create additional leadership experiences that can be added to your resume.
5. Invest in Yourself You must invest in yourself and never stop learning. It’s always a great idea to refresh or add new skills. Learning doesn’t always mean in the formal sense of traditional schools or advanced degrees. There are so many ways to learn new things. There are Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC’s) like Coursera and EDX. There are also paid sources such as Lynda. com which has a variety of software and business training videos to choose from. You can have 10 days of unlimited free access to Lynda.com.

Bone Builder Alaskan King Crab High in protein and low in fat, the sweet flesh of the king crab is spiked with zinc—a whopping 7 milligrams per 3.5-ounce serving. “Zinc is an antioxidant, but more important, it helps support healthy bone mass and immune function,” says Susan Bowerman, assistant director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of California at Los Angeles. “Several studies have linked adequate zinc intake to increased immunity and decreased incidences of respiratory infection.” And you can reap all these benefits by swapping one of your weekly fish meals for a six-ounce serving of crab.
Bak Choy This crunchy cruciferous vegetable is more than the filler that goes with shrimp in brown sauce. “Bok choy is rich in bone-building calcium, as well as vitamins A and C, folic acid, iron, beta-carotene, and potassium,” says celebrity trainer Teddy Bass. Potassium keeps your muscles and nerves in check while lowering your blood pressure, and research suggests that beta-carotene can reduce the risk of both lung and bladder cancers, as well as macular degeneration. Shoot for a cup a day.
Immunity Buster Ginger Contrary to popular belief, ginger—a piquant addition to so many Asian dishes—isn’t a root, it’s a stem, which means it contains living compounds that improve your health. Chief among them is gingerol, a cancer suppressor that studies have shown to be particularly effective against that of the colon. Chop ginger or grind it fresh and add it to soymarinated fish or chicken as often as you can. The more you can handle, the better.
Blueberries “This potent little fruit can help prevent a range of diseases from cancer to heart disease,” says Ryan Andrews, the director of research at Precision Nutrition, in Toronto, Canada. One serving (3.5 ounces) contains more antioxidants than any other fruit. Drizzle with lemon juice and mix with strawberries for a disease-fighting supersnack.
Muscle Enhancer Quinoa “Move over white rice and make room for this South American grain,” says Lynn Grieger, an online health, food, and fitness coach (lynngrieger.com). Although technically a seed, this protein source contains a complete set of branch chain and essential amino acids, making it a tissue- and muscle-building powerhouse. “Its nutritional composition is better than most grains, so try to have one cup a week, alternating it with other healthy starches such as sweet potatoes and brown rice,” says Bowerman. “It’s a great breakfast cereal, especially when flavored with cinnamon.”
Wild Salmon
Inflammation Fighter Flaxseed
High in inflammation-fighting omega-3s, wild red or sockeye salmon (canned or fillet) is an excellent low-mercury alternative to canned solid tuna, which can be high in the toxic metal. “Defrosting a frozen fillet for dinner makes a great substitute for steak,” says Dr. Dansinger, “or pan sear a fresh fillet with olive oil and kosher salt.” Recent NFL probes suggest that many teams—including the Bengals and the Giants—serve it to players to lock in strength gains and fuel performance. But while pro athletes might eat 16 ounces at once, you’re better off with three or four six-ounce servings a week.
Rich in protein and fiber, these seeds taste great on cereal and yogurt. Their oil also comes in pill or liquid form, and is high in alpha linolenic omega-3s, which puts them next to wild fish on the list of heart-healthy fare. “They’re a great brain food too,” says Andrews. Shoot for a tablespoon of ground flaxseed a day.
Dark Chocolate “The flavonoids in dark chocolate inhibit platelet clumping, which reduces the risk for stroke, heart attack, and embolisms,” says Bowerman. “It’s high in calories, so limit yourself each day to a half bar with at least 70 percent cacao.”

THE KIMO BENTLEY NATURAL SKIN CARE STORY By Carmen GonzalezNoain Larrinaga
K
imo Bentley is the result of a loving hard working mother trying to find the best homemade remedy for her daughter’s skin problem. When her newborn was diagnosed with eczema the doctors only prescribed steroid based creams that could not guarantee success. Not happy with the limited options available, Kimo decided to find a natural cure for her daughter’ eczema and created the first natural soap. After graduating at the top of her Esthetic skincare class, she began investigating about skin, scalp and body rejuvenation treatment, and has never stopped since then.
is not just a brand it's a lifestyle! It's about unlocking beauty inside and out, using nature’s hurts to heal the mind body and soul. What, if any, difficulties have you experienced in maintaining the brand’s philosophy? Maintaining the highest quality of ingredients has been extremely costly however the best results are acquired from using only the purest ingredients. With the Kimo Bentley brand our promise is to balance, restore and repair. If you had to sum up the true embodiment of the brand in three words, what would they be and why? Because our brand was specifically created to balance, restore and repair, great skin comes from inside out. We aspire to naturally transform your skin through our knowledge, expertise and natural products, which are handmade.
What was once a homemade cure is now one of the most well known and widely used natural beauty brands. Very proudly Kimo Bentley affirms that their products are 100% natural and make a difference. At Kimo Bentley the belief is that great skin comes from the inside Which product do you think is the most out, and their goal is to transform skin representative of the brand? catapulted the brand to the next level and brought it mainstream. Time and time again Shea oatmeal has proven itself to be one of the best all natural beauty bars on the market. It was the lines first product. How did the distribution deal with Walgreens come about? Social media, when used in a positive light, is a great tool for getting your business out there without expensive PR firms. I used social media (Facebook) to familiarize the community with who I was. I created a story about my business from the very start, Walgreens came about through a contact on social media and at the time they were looking for local vendors for their stores. I met all the requirements and the rest is history. What does a deal like this do for the Brand? Being a Walgreens vendor is very exciting. Walgreens has been around for many years and is the number one pharmacy in the USA, so having the backing by such a huge well-known company brings respect for my brand, not everyone makes it to Walgreens. In terms of expansion, what is your vision for the brand in terms of making it a total skincare line? We have already expanded our brand. We have opened a skincare clinic in East Orange, NJ and working on a retail store. The signature skincare line will be launched by summer 2015 which will include hair care and facial care products. As the founder and creator of an all-natural skincare line, what are some of your beauty regiments? I have acne prone skin so my regent is very simple. It is a 5 step program - cleanse, treat, hydrate and protect. List 5 beauty items you cannot live without? My top 5 items are Turmeric powder, Shea Butter, Coconut, Oatmeal and Essential oils Forecast the next 5 years – personally and professionally. Seeking to create employment for mothers and then crossing the water to Europe for further expansion. Kimo Bentley will be around for a very long time and will continue to change the game in the beauty industry.
Personally: leaving a legacy for my daughters as they have seen this family business evolve, marriage to my soul mate and another baby. Kimo Bentley is always looking to improve women’s
Helping Kids Become Wealthy By Diony Cespedes

ou can help your children acquire wealthbuilding skills even if you´re not wealthy. Wealth building skills are gained through research and experimentation. Your job, as your children’s first wealth
educator, is to create a fun, supportive environment for children to explore, take risks, and extract lessons from both their positive and negative experiences. Below are tips to get started.
Treat career exploration as a form of play similar to wearing costumes on Halloween. Try not to become too attached to your children’s passing ambitions. On the other hand, if your children want to share their gifts with the world, help them do so. Who knows? Your child could be the next Tony Hansberry II, a high school student who, at age 14, invented a surgical technique that improves upon surgical stitching techniques in hysterectomies or Marla Olmstead, an art prodigy who Expose your children to a wide range began painting and selling abstract of careers | Children often have art at age four. limited views about available careers. I moved to the island of Upolu Samoa at a young age. I was introduced to the island culture, which is when I fell in love with reggae music. I always loved music from a young age, writing songs, singing and playing guitar. Wherever I was, music was always there for me like a constant companion. My first experience performing I would say was as a youth in the village with my friends and people in my village. In High School I had the opportunity to perform in a nightclub with the house band. SQUAT YOUR WAY TO A STRONGER BODY!
S
quats have become synonymous with shaping the derriere that people forget it has other amazing benefits. The “king of all exercises” – squatting works your whole body from head to toe. This makes the Squat a crucial exercise for gaining strength and building muscle. Contrary to popular belief, Squats aren’t bad for your knees and lower back. Squats with bad form are. If you Squat with proper form, you’ll strengthen the muscles surrounding your knees and lower back. This will make your knees and lower back stronger and healthier, not weak and injured. Here are a few reasons why the Squat is King!
Squats Build Strength • The Squat is the best exercise for building overall strength. • Squats strengthen your largest, longest, most powerful muscles – glutes, sartorius and soleus.15 Squats strengthen your posterior chain muscles – hamstrings, glutes, lower back, calves, etc. • Squats strengthen your posterior chain through the longest range of motion (half your length) • Squats require you to balance the weight which works your abs, obliques, shoulders, arms, etc. • Squats work your whole body as one piece (NOT in isolation) like you move outside the gym
Squats Build Muscle Squats are more than just a “leg exercise”. Your hips and knees are bending, but the rest of your body has to support the weight and keep your torso from collapsing. This is how Squats work your whole body, as one piece. Here are just some of the muscles working when you Squat. •
