Statement to Trinity UMC Rev. David Brannock March 25, 2012 I want to begin by thanking the Staff-Parish Relations Committee and the congregation for your prayerful support of me and my family, not just during my renewal leave, but ever since I began my ministry among you. For the past three years we have experienced much love and support here. My family is blessed for having been part of the Trinity family. So why did the District Superintendent announce recently that a pastoral change will occur in June? As you know, from January 23-March 18 I was on an 8-week spiritual renewal leave because I desperately needed some uninterrupted time away from my pastoral duties. 1. I was burned out and needed to rest. The cumulative effect of 17 years of parish ministry was causing my physical and mental health to suffer. 2. I was wrestling with my call from God. I needed space to discern whether God wanted me to keep serving as a pastor or to go serve outside the church in a different role. I got the rest I craved. For the first time since I started pastoring in 1995, I got to be away from work for more than 7 consecutive days. Because I knew that I could not be called for any pastoral needs, for the first time in 17 years I could truly be off-duty. My mind and body could fully relax because there was no chance of an emergency interrupting my rest and renewal. I also got clarity about my call. When God called me to seminary 20 years ago, I believed that someday I would leave the pulpit to serve outside the church. I have never planned to spend my whole ministry being a pastor. To help me gain clarity, I talked with a spiritual director and with a counselor. I went on two 3-day spiritual retreats. I consulted with my family physician and with a life coach who is also a medical doctor. I worshiped at a different church each week. I searched the Scriptures. I talked with my parents and with friends. Mary Ethel, Molly Kate, and I prayed daily for God to show us the way forward. I discovered how much I need clear boundaries to achieve a healthy balance between work, home, and play. I also need to rid myself of the high demands and expectations that others place on me and that I place upon myself. In trying so diligently to love my neighbor as myself, I have failed to love myself as my neighbor. That imbalance must change at once. I feel at peace that God is blessing my request for a voluntary leave of absence for the 2012-13 appointment year. The Book of Discipline contains this provision which lets me continue being part of the Holston Conference as an ordained elder. This leave of absence is voluntary and is granted one year at a time for up to five years. In the future when I choose to end this leave, I will work with the Conference Board of Ordained Ministry and the Morristown District Superintendent in following the protocol provided in the Book of Discipline. Where will we go and what will I do? At this point I will not say since all of the details have not been finalized. Plans are still in progress. But as I wind up three wonderful years here, I want to affirm that during this season of transition, I will be OK and Trinity will be OK. God the Father is still sovereign. The Holy Spirit is still guiding. Christ still says, “Come, follow me.”
