Fundraiser in memory of Emily A BIRTHDAY celebration in memory of a little girl who died in a tragic accident raised more than £1,100 for local projects.

Hundreds of people turned out to celebrate the life of Emily May Hughes on Friday, on what would have been her fifth birthday, in Coedpoeth, near Wrexham. Devastated parents Robert and Louise Hughes said a big thank you to everyone who attended. Louise said they were taking each day as it comes since the accident on Christmas Eve, when Robert tripped over Emily on the stairs and dropped a TV on her. She died in hospital on Christmas Day after suffering a ‘catastrophic brain injury’. On Friday more than 400 people packed out a concert in Coedpoeth Parish Hall with family, friends and children from Ysgol Penygelli, where Emily was a pupil. Louise said: “It was a brilliant evening. We had organised it to celebrate Emily’s birthday. And we wanted to say a big thank you to all the people who have supported us. “The evening raised £1,150 that will be going to projects in the community.

Concert honours accident victim “We gave the children a pink balloon on the way out and all the other people had keepsakes. “There are other fundraising activities going on which have raised money for the Ronald McDonald’s House at Alder Hey.” She added: “We are just taking each day as it comes. That’s all we can do.” Emily attended the Salvation Army Sunday school in Coedpoeth and the Salvation Army band and children’s band played at the concert, while the Ysgol Penygelli choir and James Lambert choir performed. She was the younger sister of Ross, Lucy and Betty.

MISSED: Emily May Hughes.

Library grant boost WREXHAM will receive nearly £337,000 to improve Wrexham Library and Overton Library. The minister for heritage, Alun Ffred Jones, has announced a record level of funding of about £3.5m to develop the Welsh library network in 2009-10. The grants are part of the three-year (2008-2011) Libraries for Life programme aimed at attracting more people to benefit from the new improved facilities and services provided. Under the scheme, Wrexham will see huge improvements in the look and facilities available, while Overton will see improvements in the look and stock on offer. As part of the refurbishment project, Wrexham Library will temporary relocate to alternative premises and the council is hoping to make an announcement in June as to when the work will start and where the library will be placed while the work is carried out. Cllr Bob Dutton, lead member for leisure, libraries and culture at Wrexham County Borough Council, said: “I am delighted that such a high level of investment has been made in Wrexham by the Welsh Assembly Government with not one but two libraries receiving money to improve the services they offer.”

Man jailed for swinging metal bar at policeman AN OFF-DUTY police officer who followed and went to arrest a man carrying a bar, only to be assaulted, has been commended by a Crown Court judge. Judge John Rogers QC, sitting at Mold Crown Court, said PC Stephen Taylor spotted Simon Lee Duckett, 27, and formed the view he was out committing offences.

“He thought it appropriate to follow the defendant and eventually he was confronted and assaulted,” said the judge. “He is to be commended for his publicspiritedness.” Duckett, of Clarence Road, Wrexham, admitted assault with intent to resist arrest and was jailed for a year. The judge told him a little more than a month after being placed on a com-

NORTH Wales Fire and Rescue Service is working in partnership with Age Concern North East Wales to help keep the residents of Wrexham as safe as possible in their homes.

Firefighters are working alongside staff from the Options project by Age Concern, ensuring all residents aged 50 or over have access to free advice and guidance on fire safety as well as signposting them for support on a range of household issues. Paul Whybro, county safety manager for Wrexham, said: “We have been working with the Options project for almost a year now, and by passing on information on what advice and support is available for residents of the borough aged 50 plus, we believe that a large number of our population are now safer in their homes. “When we visit residents of this age group during

our free home fire safety checks, we can pass on contact details for Options and, in the same way, the Options staff can let their clients know about our free home fire safety checks – accessing this advice could both change and save lives.” Options manager Karen Crane said: “Through our Options programme, we can offer advice and signposting to a number of agencies. Whatever the problem or issue, or if the individual is struggling in any way, we will be there to give free and confidential advice on all kinds of matters. We are here purely to give support to older people, and enable them to remain independent.” To register for a home fire safety check, call 08001 691234 or visit www.nwalesfireservice.org.uk. Ben Kelly, defending, said it was an assault in the legal sense but it was right to point out there was no physical force used on the police officer. He said the weapon was brandished in order to make him back off. He did so and the officer came to no harm. Duckett was no longer on heroin and was taking a reducing amount of methadone.

Bike delight for boy with cerebral palsy By Francesca Elliott THE family of a four-year-old boy with cerebral palsy say he is delighted after receiving a surprise gift of a new bicycle. Riccardo Dotolo, who attends Wats Dyke Infant School, in Garden Village, Wrexham, has difficulty walking, and uses a walking frame to get around. The bike was donated to Riccardo by the Caudwell Children’s Charity, and his parents say it will help strengthen his arms and legs. Riccardo’s father, Lorenzo, said: “We gave him the bike while he was at school, and all his friends came out to watch. “His face absolutely lit up, he was beaming from ear to ear, it was great, he was obviously over the moon with it. “We’re hoping it will help him with his balance and posture, as at the moment he’s a little insecure on his feet, and sometimes loses his confidence. “He’s a determined little chap though, if he wants to get anywhere quickly then he just rolls. Now with this new bike he will be

Free rail travel pilot scheme motors on DEPUTY Welsh First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones has announced the free rail pilot scheme will continue throughout the summer. From Sunday, May 17, Cerdyn Cymru passholders will continue to benefit from free rail travel on the Welsh section of the Wrexham-Bidston Line and on the Conwy Valley Line between Blaenau Ffestiniog and Llandudno. The first scheme is open to cardholders from the counties of Conwy and Gwynedd, the second those from Flintshire and Wrexham. A recent evaluation of the scheme by the Wales Transport Research Centre concluded the second year of the pilot scheme had successfully achieved its objectives in 2008-09 and recommended a further continuation. The evaluation of the scheme will continue with a view to making further recommendations prior to the winter 2009 timetable. Mr Jones said: “I am delighted that cardholders eligible for free travel on the Conwy Valley and Borderlands railways will be able to continue receiving free travel throughout the summer months. “The pilot scheme was very popular during the last year – with an average of 3,000 free journeys made per week.”

definitely will,” he added. “But we’re not worried, the high schools all have disability access, so there shouldn’t be any problems.” Riccardo’s mother, Franca, said: “We’d like to thank the Caudwell charity and all who donated for making this possible and special thanks to all the staff at Wats Dyke School for their hard work and dedication to help children toward a better future.”

MP to retire to be brewer CLWYD South MP Martyn Jones will quit politics next year – to become a lager brewer. The Labour MP, one of Westminster’s most recognisable figures thanks to his trademark bow ties, will devote his time to trying to revive the defunct Wrexham Lager brand. After two decades in Parliament, which included seeing off Boris Johnson at the polls in 1997 and – as a former microbiologist – identifying the cause of mad cow disease, he will embark on a serious attempt to bring back one of the country’s oldest lagers. The 63-year-old bought the name for just £1 when the company was taken over in the 1990s and is now in talks about going into production. Mr Jones will stand down when Gordon Brown calls the next General Election. But he insisted his decision to retire was not linked to the ailing fortunes of the Labour Party.

By Lois York He said: “There is a big world out there and there are other things I want to do. “It is entirely down to my personal plans. I want to spend time with my grandchildren and I am finding the travelling difficult. It needs someone younger and with the energy to do it. “I also still own the brand for Wrexham Lager and there is somebody serious interested in working on it. I think it has got legs, it would be great to get Wrexham Lager started again.” The father-of-two was elected in 1987 to Clwyd South West, which later became Clwyd South, during the death throes of Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative Government. During the height of the miners’ strike he pelted Thatcher’s car with tomatoes. Mr Jones added: “Of course my work will carry on up until the next General Election and anyone with a local problem should still contact my office.”

Lottery cash helps school go green A GREEN-FINGERED group in Wrexham is celebrating its share of more than £60,000 awarded from the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) to help bring communities closer to nature and celebrate green spaces. A total of £63,280 has been awarded to 17 environmental projects in Wales, with St Mary’s Church Aided School in Overton, Wrexham, receiving £3,050. In 2007 the project scooped £7,625 through Breathing Places to develop environmental projects, including a community wildlife garden, a veget-

able and fruit garden and an outdoor educational centre. With the latest cash, the school will host an open day to celebrate and promote its breathing place, located within school grounds. The event will involve flower planting, storytelling and forest schoolawareness sessions. Many of the funded events will take place during the BBC Springwatch Dirty Weekend from June 6-7, which will see people throughout the country doing their bit for nature.

STEPPING DOWN: Clwyd South MP Martyn Jones is hoping to revive Wrexham Lager.

Jail for man supplying cocaine and cannabis A SALESMAN manager who had never been in any trouble before has been sent to prison for a year after he admitted possessing cocaine, a Class A drug, with intent to supply. Daniel Geddes, 22, of Erddig Road, Wrexham, also admitted being concerned in the supply of cannabis. Judge John Rogers QC, sitting at

Mold Crown Court, told him: “Those who deal in Class A drugs have to serve custodial sentences – to punish and to deter others.” Gareth Parry, prosecuting, said shortly after midnight on August 2 last year Geddes was seen with a number of friends in Poplar Road, Wrexham. Police officers saw him acting sus-

piciously in an alleyway and he became aware of the officers he discarded a small bag. It turned out it contained cocaine, and a further three bags of cocaine were recovered. In total there were nearly three grammes of cocaine, valued at about £120. Geddes pleaded guilty on the basis of

he would supply cocaine to a group of established users in order to pay for his own use. He admitted he had supplied his brother with cannabis. Des Parry, defending, said Geddes’s arrest had been “a massive wake-up call”. He said Geddes had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and done everything he could to right his wrong.

Cllr David Griffiths was given a lesson in sign language by Level 2 British Sign Language students at Wrexham’s Yale College. The event formed part of the learning festival held at Queens Square on Saturday. Other activities taking place included making hanging bas-

ket and holistic therapies. CONCERNS: Malcolm King and some of the children of the Venture in Caia Park. THE founder of an under-threat children’s play centre has pleaded with council bosses to soften proposed cuts.

Malcolm King said staff at the Venture centre in Caia Park, Wrexham, are ready to ‘share the pain’ other bodies face as the public sector is rocked by the credit crunch. But he said it emerged on Friday that Wrexham County Borough Council is proposing to cut funding to Venture not only from £173,000 to £40,000 by July 1 but is then planning to ‘taper’ funding to zero during the next four years. Mr King, a Wrexham councillor, said any cut to £40,000 or less would mean closure.

He said: “We hope to change that (the cut from £173,000) so any reduction is phased. “I would not say we would be keen on a reduction. But if the rest of the council is being cut by 2% or 5%, for us to argue we should be different is a little bit offensive. “I am uncomfortable if everybody doesn’t share more or less equal pain. If other organisations get a 5% cut, I would feel comfortable if we got a 10 or 15% cut.” Cllr King said dropping funding to £40,000 would be ‘drastic’ and mean closure. He added: “We understand this will take effect on July 1. As things stand, the Venture will then have to close, despite the fact that more than £330,000 has been secured from 12 other funders to support our ser-

jp100509venture-3

vices for the rest of the financial year. “This is because nearly all that money has to be spent on specific projects, leaving little for core costs like heating and lighting, insurance, key staff and cleaning.” Opened in 1978, Venture has 600 registered children and employs 25 full- or part-time staff. Wrexham Council wants to switch funding from Venture to broken families on Caia Park’s deprived estate. Council chiefs insist almost £300,000 from the National Assembly for Wales over three years to Venture should keep it going. Wrexham council’s director of children’s services, Terry Garner, said: “The council is not looking to close the Venture.”

Pub guests urged to ‘Drink Pink’

Concerns over donation requests

Course on reptile Identificiation

PUB-GOERS at the Acton Park in Wrexham are being encouraged to swap their regular drink for a pink tipple for charity. The Embers Inns team launches its annual four-week Drink Pink campaign on Monday to raise funds for national charity Against Breast Cancer. Chain Ember Inns hope to collect a record £50,000 for the charity. A total of 5p will be donated to Against Breast Cancer for every glass of rose wine sold throughout the campaign at the Chester Road pub, with Montana and Jacobs Creek wines taking centre stage. This year, however, equal donations will also be made for a selection of other pink pours.

TRADING Standards officers in Wrexham have received enquiries about leaflets and collection bags left requesting donations of clothing and bric-a-brac. Commercial companies may state on their leaflet or collection bag they are not a charity but it is often in the small print, and the bags often have a company number which may be mistaken for a registered charity number. Cllr David Bithell said: “I am concerned members of the public might think that they are making donations to charity when, in fact, their items end up with commercial companies for their profit.” To check a charity number, visit www.charitycommission.gov.uk or call 0845 3000 218.

NORTH East Wales Wildlife (NEWW) is running a free training course on reptile identification, ecology and survey techniques. NEWW has received funding from the Countryside Council for the training to teach people about their native reptiles and help with surveys and collecting records to determine the distribution of reptiles, such as grass snakes and common lizards, in the area. The free course takes place on Saturday, May 23, at Rhydymwyn Valley Nature Reserve, near Mold. Minister in visit to bakery on the rise FAMILY and professional interests coincided for a Government minister when she visited a hi-tech bakery that specialises in making bread for people with coeliac disease. Europe minister Caroline Flint revealed her husband, Phil Cole, has the condition and needs gluten-free products such as the bread made by Village Bakery (Nutrition) Ltd on Wrexham Industrial Estate. People with coeliac disease are unable to consume wheat-based foods such as bread that contains gluten because it makes them ill. The gluten-free range, comprising white, fibre and clean oat bread, is sold under the Juvela brand in the UK and the Semper brand in Europe. The minister’s visit coincided with Coeliac Awareness Week and chef Phil Vickery has launched a gluten-free cookery book, Seriously Good, as part of the campaign. Ms Flint said: “As the wife of a coeliac, I was particularly interested to see the gluten-free breads being made and hear how they are now being exported all over Europe.” The minister was on a tour of North Wales highlighting how European funding has helped create and safeguard jobs in the region. The £3m bakery, opened last year, employs 25 people and there are 10 more jobs in the pipeline, with new products being launched in the autumn. Among the workforce are three people who were taken as a result of European funding through the ReAct programme administered by the National Assembly for Wales.

Horticulture, is part of Skills Competition Wales which is supported by the National Assembly for Wales and part-funded through the European Social Fund. Competitors battled it out in two rounds – those with two years experience or less, and those with two to seven years, in a day of challenging design briefs aimed at testing their creative and technical skills.

Amanda won the heat for those with fewer than two years experience, and Charlotte Cooks, 22, of Abergavenny, won the other heat. Amanda only started studying floristry in September after 30 years in the finance industry. She said: “I was surprised and thrilled to win, especially as I was up against some more experienced florists.”

Man injured in street attack TWO men are behind bars following an unprovoked attack in Wrexham. One of the attackers, Christopher West, 20, told the victim his name was Froggie and he would be back to do it again. West, of Cheshire View, Brymbo, and Andrew Yeates, 21, of Connor Crescent, Wrexham, admitted assaulting Andrew Lee Roscoe on July 1 last year. At Mold Crown Court on Friday, West received nine months youth custody and Yeates six months imprisonment. “You together carried out an unprovoked attack on Mr Ros-

coe,” judge John Rogers QC told them. “He tried to escape, you prevented him, you knocked him to the ground and while he was on the ground defenceless you set about kicking him, not one but both of you. Only custody is appropriate.” The judge said he was quite sure West was the main mover in the offence and said he had a formidable record for public disorder. Prosecutor Gareth Parry said at about 8.50pm that day Mr Roscoe, 22, was sitting in the driving seat of his car in Bradley Road, Wrex-

ham. His door was open and he was talking to a young woman. Suddenly both defendants approached, he realised there was going to be trouble and threw himself out of the car with his head down and his arms over his head to try to protect himself. He was punched several times by both defendants as he went in through the garden gate of a friend’s address nearby. Both started to kick him, he fell to the ground and he was then repeatedly kicked to the body. The victim had injuries to his head, arm and shoulder.

Lottery funding vote

Information refused

TIME is running out for community groups in Wrexham to enter The People’s Millions TV contest to secure the chance to win a Lottery award of up to £50,000 to improve their area. The contest is a partnership between the Big Lottery Fund and ITV. Later in the year shortlisted projects will be screened on ITV Wales Tonight’s evening news, with viewers voting for the projects they want to win. Last year St Anne’s Primary School in Caia Park won £56,991 in the contest to fund creative play equipment. The closing date for entries is noon on Friday, May 15. Call 08450 10 11 12 or visit www. peoplesmillions.org.uk to enter.

WELSH councils have refused to answer thousands of requests for information from the public during the past three years. According to figures released to the Labour Group in the Welsh Assembly, nearly 10% of all Freedom of Information requests to Welsh local authorities have been refused. In total more than 14,000 requests were received with nearly 1,300 left totally or partially unanswered. Wrexham County Borough Council received 874 requests, 4.8% of which were totally or partially refused. The Freedom of Information Act was introduced by the Labour Party in 2000.

Entrepreneur off to a flying start A WEB developer’s start-up business is poised for success after helping to increase a dog grooming business’s profits by 100% in three months.

COMMISSIONER: Ruth Marks. rj200708RuthMarks OLDER people living in the county borough will get the opportunity to quiz Wales’s Older People’s Commissioner, Ruth Marks, next week. The event has been organised by Wrexham County Borough Council and will give audience members an opportunity to ask questions that directly affect them. It will be held in the Memorial Hall, Wrexham, on Tuesday, May 19, at 1pm. Ms Marks will be greeted by the mayor of Wrexham, Cllr David Griffiths, on the last official visit of his mayoralty year. Assisting older people to live independently is a key improvement priority for the council. Lead member for social care and health, Cllr Joan Lowe, said: “We are delighted to be able to welcome Ruth Marks to Wrexham to hear the views of the local people. “Older people’s care is an important area of focus for the council and we should not underestimate the power of this group of people within our communities. “Their views and opinions mean a lot to us and we hope that during this visit we will be able to gain knowledge that will shape older people’s services for the future.” ■ To book a place, call Hilary Neil-Williams on 01978 297267 or email hilary. neil-williams@wrexham. gov.uk.

Beck Davies, co-founder of Mintpepper Web Works, won a place on the prestigious Flying Start programme for student entrepreneurs. The scheme, run by the National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship, provides graduates with support to help them realise their ambitions of running their own business. Glyndw ˆ r University student Beck, 33, at-

tended the three-day Flying Start course in Liverpool where she built up a valuable network of contacts, as well as discovering some tips on developing her business concept and further improving her entrepreneurial skills. Now she hopes to put them into practice, expanding the web design, content management system advice and search engine optimisation service which she started eight months ago – delivering success stor-

ies similar to that of Halkyn-based Christie Scissorhounds. “Flying Start was an experience not to be missed,” said Beck, from Brynteg. “It was pretty hard work, getting up at 8am and not finishing until 11pm, but that’s part and parcel of running your own business. “Over the three days I learnt so much, particularly about how the business world operates, and I’ve made some great contacts.” Beck started studying on the MSc Internet Computing course at Glyndw ˆ r University in September 2008, after graduating

in Chemistry from UMIST, now the University of Manchester. Judith Alexander, manager of The Zone, Glyndw ˆ r University’s service for extracurricular enterprise and entrepreneurship activities, said: “We were thrilled to hear that Beck had been accepted on to the Flying Start Programme. It’s great to see students like Beck take such opportunities and have the courage to start a business.”

YSGOL Dinas Brân pupil Alex Pasley is the winner of this year’s Peace Message competition. The Year 11 student’s name was announced by the chairman of Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, Phil Davies, at a school assembly. The official commendation will be given by eisteddfod president Terry Waite as part of the Peace Message presentation during festival week. The Peace Message is an integral part of the International Festival. Over the years the Peace Message has become increasingly dramatised through song and dance and last year it was decided to change the format once more by involving children of secondary school age, with Ysgol Dinas Brân chosen as the first school to take part in this new initiative. Winner Alex will be officially acknowledged on the Eisteddfod stage by Terry Waite and the winning piece will be published in the programme. Pupils of Ysgol Dinas Brân were invited to take part in the competition to submit a written piece of prose or poetry, based on this year’s theme of Youth of the World. As the winner of the competition, Alex will have the honour of presenting A Beautiful, Brilliant Word as part of the three Peace Message presentations to be performed during this year’s festival, which runs from July 6-12.

IT IS Volunteers Week on June 1-7 and, as a charity that relies on volunteers, I’d like to say thank you from the Royal British Legion to the volunteers in Wrexham who help make the Poppy Appeal so successful. The 2008 Poppy Appeal across North Wales raised a record £330,000, with Wrexham contributing more than £39,000 to this total. The UK total has steadily increased from £26m in 2006 to £30m in 2007. The 2008 total is looking good and very soon the final total will be available. More than 36 million poppies were worn across the country and this would not have been possible without the dedication of our committed volunteers who co-ordinate poppy selling in their local areas. The Poppy Appeal is the lifeblood of the Royal British Legion’s welfare work, which supports service people past and present and their families. We provide financial, social and emotional support to people of all ages and backgrounds – from providing special care homes and other welfare services to Second World War veterans to helping those in more recent conflicts adjust to life outside the services, providing a fresh start or support through an immediate crisis like homelessness. To give some examples of how the money raised is used £5 will ensure that a housebound or hospitalised person receives a friendship visit, £20 could help toward providing skilled advice and an hour’s legal representation at a Disability Allowance or War Pension tribunal, £75 could help toward providing a fresh start for an ex-serviceman or woman so they can them adjust to life outside the services and £250 could buy an emergency lifeline alarm for an elderly ex-service person or their spouse. ■ £360 would give an ex-service person or one of their dependants a much needed break at one of our Poppy Break centres. ■ £800 could provide a severely disabled person and their carer with a much needed welfare break. ■ £2,000 could purchase an electrically powered vehicle or scooter to give elderly or disabled veterans back mobility and an independent life. ■ £2,500 could pay to install a stair lift in a home where it is needed. ■ £5,000 could arrange a bathroom adaptation which would assist a disabled person to perform basic func-

ABOUT a million people who have never been convicted of a crime are going to have to wait up to 12 years for their DNA to be taken off the police database. The Government has had to come up with a new plan, instead of keeping the samples forever, after the European Court of Human Rights ruled too many innocent people’s information was being kept in the UK, other than in Scotland, which has its own rules. But civil

tions in their home such as having a shower or washing safely. Of fundamental importance to the success and future of the Poppy Appeal is our ability to recruit more Poppy collectors and organisers, as many of our collectors find they are now too old to support us. If any of your readers are interested in volunteering for us, either as a collector, organiser we would love to hear from them. Budding volunteers can get in touch with me on 01978 754593 or by emailing kforbes@britishlegion.org. uk. KEVIN FORBES Community fundraiser, Wrexham

Others deserve similar recognition

HONOUR: Nelson Mandela speaks to the crowds as a statue is unveiled in Parliament Square, London. LIKE many millions of others I was very pleased indeed that the government recognised Nelson Mandela via a statue. This truly deserving honour got me thinking of many other people who I think should be similarly recognised. I could name a number of people with profound disabilities whom I know personally and who have for years braved their daily pain and disability without complaint and are deserving of a statue for their fortitude. However, these wonderful people who are an example to us all are not national figures and are sadly unlikely to receive such recognition. Are the Government in the near-future considering recognising anybody else currently living via a statue? If they are, may I respectfully and humbly suggest any of the following three people who have inspired me and have been most supportive and encouraging of my voluntary work since 1972, all whose selfless lifetime contributions have made a great difference to the well

HUGHES the VIEWS rights groups, unhappy at the fact DNA will be kept for 12 years, say the plan is an insult to court. But why? Surely, rather than destroying the DNA of a million people we should be adding to the database by including the profile of every UK resident. If someone has done nothing wrong then they have absolutely nothing to fear. We already have so much recorded about us by the Govern-

being of society: Lord (Alf) Morris of Manchester, who was appointed by Harold Wilson, our first minister for the disabled; Tony Benn, a former Cabinet minister; and Jack Jones, former General Secretary of the TGWU. KEN MACK Crathie Place, Rhosddu, Wrexham

More research needed for cure

IN WREXHAM, there are an estimated 200 people with ME/chronic fatigue syndrome who for years have been calling for solid medical research which could lead to a cure for their illness instead of being palmed off, as happens too often, with psychological therapies or antidepressants. Sufferers and their families can now help push the pendulum towards the provision of more biomedical research by joining the Just Four Quid campaign. This aims to raise £1m toward physical – not psychological – research into ME by means of an internet blog which will offer weekly money-saving tips to campaign participants – anything from help with utility bills to putting off that haircut to another day. The money raised at www.justfourquid.com will go to two national charities heavily involved in pushing forward biomedical research into the illness. The ME Association and ME Research UK. The campaign will be launched on 12 May, which is International ME Awareness Day, and last for a whole year. If every one of the quarter of a million people with ME in the UK could contribute £4 to the campaign, we would reach £1m quickly. But fundraising campaigns are never that simple, so we have devised this ‘Save a lot, give a little’ website so that those who take part can have the maximum effect. And it could become a model for charity fundraising in these recession-hit times. We do hope www.justfourquid.com will have the support of your readers and that they will bring the campaign to the attention of those who might like to take part. TONY BRITTON Publicity manager, ME Association ment, banks, and credit agencies what does it matter if somewhere a computer has a series of numbers recorded against our name? Especially as the profile can only be read by experts. Instead of thinking about the civil liberties of someone who has their DNA on file we should think about the human rights of the second, third or fourth victim of a serial rapist. Especially so if the offender would have been caught after the first offence had his DNA been on file. And how often will someone escape justice because they were wrongly acquitted only to reoffend years later after their DNA record has been destroyed? Let’s also remember DNA can be used to prove innocence too.

Wrexham Labour MP Ian Lucas

AS the days get longer and the sun warmer, the main tourist season is on us once more. We can sometimes underestimate the value our region has to visitors and take for granted what we have on our doorsteps in North Wales. But the region, from Lavister right across to Holyhead, boasts beautiful scenery, topclass restaurants and hotels, and all kinds of events from concerts and comedy to canoeing and archery. Wrexham has both beautiful countryside and a bustling nightlife – and we should sing its praises more often. That is one of the reasons why, along with other North Wales Labour MPs, I was pleased to meet a range of people from tourism bodies from across North Wales. The North Wales Group of Labour MPs have been working hard to promote the region – you may have seen the recent coverage when the group was pushing tourism bosses and train operators to work together so that trains serving the region were used to highlight tourism destinations across North Wales. This meeting, organised by the group, was part of our work to keep building on the good work which has already been done to boost the region as a tourism destination. Part of the work we do involves hearing what can be done better, and the groups and representatives who attended helped set out some of the challenges they face. What is also important is remembering the value of what we have. Promoting North Wales effectively does not just benefit the tourists who come here, although they take away wonderful memories of their time here, it is also a major contributor to the economy – and one which is more vital than ever during the current global climate. Handled properly, the current economic challenges we face may also prove to be an opportunity for North Wales. A recent survey published by trade forum the Best of Britain and Ireland revealed that, of those planning to take a holiday this year, more than half will stay in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. It is those people who North Wales needs to attract and that is why we, as a group of MPs, wanted to bring together the top people in tourism industries across the region to ensure that all that can be done is being done. We have a beautiful part of Britain on our doorstep and sharing its beauty with others will help boost our economy. Doing what we can to ensure tourists are welcome here is the first step in strengthening our local tourism economy even further and helping to build on its successes for the future.

COOL MOVE: Studded denim jacket £30, from Dorothy Perkins.

Denim delight I

ncredibly, denim went out of fashion once, but it wasn’t out of favour for long. The alternatives to jeans, mainly combats and chinos, didn’t have the same appeal as our old blue favourites, and when the denim industry fought back with ‘glamorous’ jeans, adorned with sequins, embroidery and studs, which could be worn for nights on the town, we all breathed a sigh of relief. TOP THE LOT: Denim sleeveless jacket, £80, from French Connection.

Quite simply, no item of clothing has the same appeal. Pull on your favourites for daytime and you feel instantly comfortable and presentable. They are the staples we have all come to rely on. Each season the shapes and colours may change and this spring you can wear denim from top-to-toe with everything from hats to shoes, to all-in-ones to dresses, skirts and jackets fashioned from our favourite fabric. Like every other fashion, denim comes in extremes, so bleached fabric is taking the place of deep dyed indigo this season. It’s not a look that suits all, so luckily there are lots of

By Gil Lightfoot alternatives on the market, but the palest hues are the ones to opt for. For summer seek out denim playsuits, shorts and sleeveless shirts. Add a bit of floral embroidery and you’re back to the 80s.

GET SHORTY: Limited Edition kimono sleeve blouse £30, denim hotpants £20, belt £5, leather bag, £35, all from New Look.

Students sample Army life SCHOOLCHILDREN across the region swapped lessons for a day of Army activities.

Dragon’s March, held at Bodelwyddan Castle on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, saw youngsters get a taste of Army life. Major Rick Kalewski, an Army careers adviser from Wrexham, said: “Dragon’s March is a chance for young people to explore the range of careers in the Army.” The children, mainly aged between 14 and 16, had the opportunity to take a look at all 140 careers on offer in the Army. Leah Ellis, 14, of Ysgol Bryn Alyn, Gwersyllt, said: “My favourite activity of the day was the tug of war, but I also enjoyed the obstacle course. “It’s good to have a look at all the different things you can do in the Army and it does make you think about joining.” The event was open to schools for the first two days, with more than 2,000 pupils attending on each day, and was open to the public on Saturday. Activities included motorbiking, climbing, paintballing and laser shooting. Dan Stuart, 15, of Darland High School, Rossett, said: “I want to join the RAF when I’m older so it’s good to be able to have a look at what kind of things you can do in the forces.”

Back on top FOR someone who was never hungry for fame or ruthlessly ambitious, ITV1's Loose Women regular Coleen Nolan - the feisty, funny Blackpool lass – has done rather well for herself.

Earlier this year the public voted the youngest Nolan sister into the semi-finals of Dancing On Ice, even though she was nowhere near as good as the other finalists, proving she had won the hearts of the nation. Now Coleen, 44, is one of the front-runners tipped to replace Fern Britton as presenter of This Morning, although she takes all such rumours with a pinch of salt, saying: “I very much believe in fate. Things always happen for a reason.” Coleen is older and wiser than she was in her late 20s, when her career was in the doldrums and her then husband, actor Shane Richie, was playing around. With her self-esteem levels at an all-time low, her weight ballooned to more than 13 stone (she's 5ft 6in). Today, she's happily married to music promoter Ray Fensome, with whom she has a seven-year-old daughter, Ciara, a revitalised career and a slimmed-down figure. There's a new circle of female friends in her fellow Loose Women presenters, and a home in the Cheshire countryside. Somehow she has found time to pen her autobiography, Upfront & Personal. Charting her years as a member of The Nolan Sisters, her tumultuous marriage to Richie, subsequent therapy and a later rift with two of her sisters and her aunt over her second husband, it is an incredibly honest tale. She also reveals her horrific discovery that her father had sexually abused her older sister Anne. “I was in absolute shock. I felt such a mixed bag of emotions. I never saw that side of him but I do believe Anne. It was hard for me to imagine him in that situation because I'd never even felt uncomfortable with him. “I felt very guilty because I knew I should hate him for her, but I didn't.” Coleen, whose parents Tommy and Maureen were talented singers, grew up in a large Irish family and was performing on stage from the age of two. She joined her sisters' group at the age of 15 – but she well recalls her early exposure to smoky, run-down clubs. “I can't imagine putting any of my kids through that," she says frankly. "My daughter's seven and I can't imagine taking her to a club and her singing four 45-minute slots through the night.” In some ways, Coleen believes she had a lost childhood because of her early singing career. “Once I was there I enjoyed being on stage, but I resented it more when I was older. Having said that, that's how we made our living.” Coleen had always been a bit of a rebel. At 16 she became pregnant by a keyboard player and had an abortion before her boyfriend went off with another woman. Then in 1986 she met Richie and entered what was to become a 14-year

Loose Women regular and recent Dancing On Ice star Coleen Nolan talks to HANNAH STEPHENSON about how she came back from the depths of depression after her divorce from Shane Richie to remarry at 40 and enter the happiest period of her life, as her autobiography, Upfront & Personal, is published.

NATION’S SWEETHEART: Coleen made it through to the semi-finals of Dancing on Ice with Stuart Widdall.

rollercoaster relationship. Indeed, their ups and downs, and affairs on both sides, form a big part of the book. “Writing the book was quite cathartic. I revisited all the emotions I thought I'd put to bed. There were times when I felt angry for not getting out sooner. “When somebody is sobbing in your arms saying, 'Please don't leave me, it's not true', it's very difficult, especially when you still love them.” When she discovered that he had been having an affair with a dancer, she stayed with him for a while until she found out it was still going on. Fearing that she was having a nervous breakdown, she went for counselling. “At night, once the kids were in bed, I would sit up all night sobbing. I felt such a failure. It took a long time to get over that.” Eventually she filed for divorce, but the proceedings dragged on before the decree absolute in 2003. Today they hardly see each other apart from when dealing with their sons, but both have remarried. “I'm fine with him now. The boys speak to him every day but luckily I don't have to speak to him that much, now the boys (Shane Junior and Jake) are 20 and 16.” Her personal life is much happier with Fensome, who proposed to her on her 40th birthday and whom she married in 2007. “Ray is the first person I've been out with where it's a real 50:50 partnership. When he met me I had two boys and they got on great. He did more with them than I ever did. I loved the fact that he loved them. “Our relationship is real and

grown-up. With Shane, sometimes I felt like I had three kids, but I know I can rely on Ray.” Her home life may be happy but she hasn't spoken to sisters Anne and Denise or her Auntie Theresa for around two years. “Anne and Ray had a stupid row when I was away and Anne told me they'd fallen out, and I thought it would blow over. Then Denise and my auntie got involved and it just escalated. I can't imagine I'll ever make up with them." Her son Jake lives with Richie in London, attending the Sylvia Young theatre school, while Shane Junior is a Bluecoat for Pontin's. Which leaves Coleen free to pursue her career. She's been approached to do a single, a cover version due for release later this year, while there's talk of The Nolans reforming (with Linda, Maureen and Bernie). She's also recording a new keep-fit DVD. Coleen's not holding her breath about stepping into Fern Britton's shoes. If it happens, it happens, she says.

Clubmates impress on the national stage

VINTAGE VETERANS: Wrexham Fencing’s Mike Norfolk, Mark Roberton, Rose Gregory and Jamie Morris.

WELSH Veteran Fencing Team were in action recently with several members of Wrexham Fencing Club among the party. The Welsh team were competing i the Veterans Four Nations, against England, Scotland and All Irish teams at the event which was held in Belfast. Jamie Morris, Mark Robertson, Rose Gregory, Wednesday Jones and County member Linda Evans were all representing Wrexham Fencing Club in the Welsh team. They were selected after beating off other Welsh fencers at a qualifying competition held last November. Wales were guided by Wrexham head coach Mike Nor-

Fencing

folk. Having celebrated his 70th irthday earlier this month, Mike shows no let-up and is an active asset to Welsh Fencing and Wrexham Fencing Club. His guidance and help to the Welsh team was appreciated by every member, especially the Wrexham contingent. This year’s Veterans Four Nations event was the third in the competition’s history. The Welsh team have continually shown improvements in their results and this year was no exception. All the Wrexham fencers played vital roles in the team’s successes.

Despite finishing in fourth place, the Wales have once more closed the gap between first and fourth place. Jamie Morris and Mark Robertson were instrumental in the results acheived by the men’s epee team. Losing narrowly 45-42 against a strong English team, they picked themselves up to beat both Scotland and All Ireland. Rose Gregory and Wednesday Jones more than played their parts in victory against the English in the women’s epee. Linda Evans continued to adjust to international fencing and was part of a victorious women’s sabre team.

Chirk in charge but it’s so close CHIRK held their nerve to edge a thrilling Premier Division encounter against Mold by just one run. Shaun Walker impressed as he hit three sixes and four fours to make up his 47 total after Chirk won the toss and opted to bat. Mold had them out for 167 and instantly got to task. Nicholas Flack had other ideas, though, and took four wickets as Mold fell just short in a tense finale. Jamie Griffiths hit 22no for Brymbo at Pontblyddon but was unable to prevent his side going down to an 87-run defeat. Division One’s Brymbo 2nds returned from Llangollen with victory by just three runs as they hit 148 for the loss of all wickets. Bersham eased to a comfortable 121-run triumph at home to Northop. Suresh de Silva starred with the bat as Bersham hit a fine 255-8 before having their rivals out for 134. Llay Welfare cruised past hosts Llandudno 2nds by nine wickets. Llandudno were put in to bat and hit 162-7, but just three batsmen saw Llay home, Mike Phennah 86no, Dave Broderick 18 and Dave Phennah 50no. Marchwiel & Wrexham beat Pwll-

Cricket

heli by 31 runs and Gresford crashed at Rhewl, going down by 75 runs. In Division Three, derby action saw Castell Alun win the toss at Gwersyllt Park and put the hosts in to bat. Castell then made light work of Park as they had them 80ao. The visitors then passed their target for the loss of five wickets. Marchwiel & Wrexham 2nds set an all-out total of 139 at Shotton, but the hosts were skittled for just 90 as Wrexham won by a superb 49 runs. Llanrwst 2nds against Brymbo 3rds was cancelled. Steve Partington produced a oneman show for Division Four’s Llay Welfare as they enjoyed a comfortable home win against Bethesda. Llay won the toss and put their rivals in to bat, but they didn’t last long as Partington took a magnificent 7-14 as Bethesda were 53ao. Llay passed the total for the loss of just three wickets. Chirk 2nds travelled to Halkyn 2nds in Division Five and fell to a 33-run defeat. John Swarbrick was Chirk’s standout player with the ball as he took 3-36. Division Six side Castell Alun 2nds shared the spoils at Corus Maeshafn. The hosts set a 174-5 total with Castell replying for 121-8.

Bob Towler from Beaver Sailing Club in Yorkshire began to master the tricky winds on the Flash and came in third. Lex end season on high

FOOTBALL: Lex XI claimed first blood in their double header with Mynydd Isa on Saturday. Student ‘chuffed’ to win call-up for the Academy Lions

OWAIN GETTING READY TO ROAR A WREXHAM student is gearing up to compete in a British Lions tour after putting in a series of winning performances for his home nation.

PRIDE: Owain Brown, in action for Halton Simms Cross, is set for a Lions tour. RS190408Simms-005

Prop forward Owain Brown, who is studying computer science at Glyndwr University, has been picked in a 20-man squad for the Great Britain and Ireland Academic Lions student rugby league team. The 24-year-old former St Helens trainee, from Acrefair, will play matches against Serbia and France on a European tour at the end of this month. He heads into Europe with the

Rugby League

backing of Glyndwr University, which has paid £500 towards his travel and accommodation costs of playing for Wales over the last few months. Owain received the Lions call-up following a string of victories playing for the Wales student rugby league side. In a home nations championship at Bradford University, he was part of the Dragons team which secured a 31-16 win over England, a 36-16 success over Ireland and a 26-22 victory against fellow students from Scotland, in a game where he

picked up the man-of-the-match award. Owain then captained the Celtic Nations to a 31-16 win over England in a trial match, a performance which ultimately secured his place in the British and Irish Lions squad. He said: “I was chuffed when I got the phone call – absolutely made up. It’s not something you expect when there are four national sides and over 100 players for the coaches to pick from. It’s such a great feeling and I can’t wait to go on the tour.” Owain first played rugby league with Wrexham Raiders when he was seven before moving to play for Widnes Tigers when he was 11

years old. After a four-year spell in the academy at Super League giants St Helens, Owain moved abroad for a brief career with Moss Vale Dragons in Wollongong, an Australian rugby league club based near Sydney. He returned to the UK in 2005 and signed for his current club, amateur side Halton Simms Cross ARLFC, based in Widnes. “Longer term, my aim is to be in contention when the next Academic Lions squad is selected, for a three-match tour to Australia in 2011,” added Owain. “But first there’s the small matter of this month’s tour.”

WREXHAM’S newly-crowned Puma Youth Alliance North West Conference champions will feel the cost of the first team’s Football League relegation. The glorious youth side have only lost one game this season, beating teams from Premiership and Championship clubs Wigan, Burnley and Preston to take the top position. Despite this success, the Football Authority funding system means that Wrexham FC’s relegation last year has resulted in a big cut to the grant funding for the youth section. The Young Dragons will lose 50% of its grants again next season, amounting to £90,000, which is sure to have a considerable knock-on effect to the success of the youth team. Chairman Geoff Moss said: “Having worked so hard to develop our youth team over the past decade, it is fantastic to see them rewarded by this league win. However, losing half our funding again is a major blow to the future for the Young Dragons and shows how illo-

CHAMPIONS: Wrexham Youth team, winners of the 2008-09 Puma Youth Alliance. gical the Football Authority’s funding system is.” He continues: “Football grants should be rewarded on the basis of quality.. In fact, we see winning the league against all the odds as an endorsement of the quality we bring to our Youth programme.” “The youth team have battled and beaten some giants this season but this continued loss of funding will be a very difficult obstacle to conquer and could mean a backward step for

the team. These youth players are every club’s future and the Football Authority’s funding system has let down those young players that truly deserve to be rewarded for their hard work and success. “We now call on Lord Mawhinney and Lord Triesman to revisit youth funding and continue to reward quality.” Four youth players have all progressed to the first team after their fantastic perform-

ances this season. Obi Onoruo and Kai Edwards made their debuts during this past season and have both been offered professional contracts. Youth defender Johnny Hunt has been offered professional terms and midfielders Matty Hardman and Luke Carding have also been given short-term first-team deals. ■ Jefferson Louis is the latest player to leave The Racecourse club after cancelling his contract by mutual consent.
