FROM the PASTOR
DearTrinityFamily,
GreetingstoyouinthenameofourLordandSaviorJesusChrist! Asyounodoubtareaware,this particulareditionoftheTrinityTrumpetisbeingreleasedonLaborDayweekend. LaborDayisoftenan opportunityforfamiliestospendsomeextratimetogetherafterthestartoftheschoolyear,maybetogodown tothelakeonemoretimeortakeashorttripoutofstate. Inthisdayandage,we’reusedtothinkingofLabor Dayasjustadayofffromworkorschool,butthereactuallyisaprettysignificanthistorybehindit. Claireand Iweretalkingaboutthistheotherday,andwebothrealizedthatweweren’tallthatfamiliarwiththathistory. Soincaseyoualsodidn’tknowmuchaboutthehistoryofLaborDay,IthoughtIwoulddoalittleresearchand talkaboutitsomeinthiseditionoftheTrumpet.
LaborDaywascreatedasacelebrationoftheworkoflaborunionsintheUnitedStatesandinother industrializedcountries. Duetotheindustrialrevolutionoftheeighteenthandnineteenthcenturies,theneedfor skilledcraftsmengavewaytotheneedforunskilledlabortooperatemachines. Becausetheseunskilled workerswereessentiallyinterchangeable,theywereveryreplaceable,andthatmeantthattheyhadlittle bargainingpowerwiththeiremployersasindividuals. Laborerswereoftentreatedpoorly,withlonghours,low pay,anddangerousworkingconditions. Eventually,laborleadersrealizedthattheycouldbandtogetherto formlaborunionsandbargaincollectivelywiththebosses,whichgavethemfarmorepower. Theywere able tostrikeiftheyfeltthattheirneedswerenotbeingmet,whichmeantthattheyhadleverageovertheir employersandcouldmakedemandsforbetterworkingconditions. Althoughtheyhavebeencontroversialin theeyesofmany,laborunionshaveaccomplishedquiteabitforworkingclasspeopleoverthelastcoupleof centuries.
Inthe1880’s,somelaborleadersdecidedthatacelebrationoftheworkoflaborunionswasinorder. AlthoughthereissomedisputeastotheeventsthatledtothefirstcelebrationsofLaborDay,theyquickly gainedtractionasthedecadeprogressed. OregonwasthefirststatetorecognizeLaborDayasagovernment holidayin1887,andbythetimeitbecameafederalholidayin1894,overthirtystatesalreadywererecognizing it. OnethingIwouldlikeallofustoremember,though,isthatourtruerestdoesnotcomebecauseofthe workoflaborunionsintheUnitedStates. Yes,laborunionsarethereasonwhywecantakeLaborDayoff,and theyareprobablyoneofthemainreasonswhy wehaveatwo-dayweekendaswell. Butourtruerestdoesnot comefromnotworkingonanyspecificdays;rather,itcomesfromJesusChristandthepromiseofeternalrest thatHegivesus. HehaspromiseduseternallifeinHisFather’skingdom,alifefreefromanythingthatwould causeusharmorsuffering. AnyworkthatwedointhekingdomofGodwillbepleasant,enjoyable,and fulfillingforus,ratherthantiringandfrustratingasitoftenisinthislife. AndwehaveJesusandtheworkHe didforusthroughHisdeathandresurrectiontothankforthat. Hedidtheheavylaborbysufferinganddying foroursins,andnowweareforgivenandhavethepromiseofeternallifeto lookforwardto. Thisiswhythe SabbathdayforChristiansnolongerinvolvesrefrainingfromphysicalwork;instead,itinvolvesdedicating ourselvestoJesusandHisWordasweworshipHimintheDivineService. JesusisourultimateSabbathrest, andanyearthlyrestfromourlaborsthatwecouldfindisnothingcomparedtotherestwewillhaveinHis eternalkingdom. Two-dayweekendsandLaborDayholidaysarenice,buttheeverlastingrestwehaveinJesus isfarbetter.
SothisLaborDayweekend, asyouenjoyanextradayofffromworkorschool, besuretothinkabout thetruerestthatyouhavereceivedthroughJesus’laboronyourbehalf. LikemostAmericansonLaborDay, youprobablywon’tthinkawholelotaboutlaborunions, butyoucancertainlypondertherestyouhave receivedinJesus, andtherestyoustillhaveyettoreceivewhenyouwillenterintothejoysofparadisewith Him. TherestwegetfromLaborDay istemporary(remember, everythingstartsupagainonTuesday!),buttherestwereceiveinChrist willlast forever. A note from Vicar Ben: In my articles for the Trinity Trumpet, I plan to share with you some art that I have created over the past few years and explain some of my thought processes behind the pieces. I will often make artwork as part of my devotional life, and so I hope to share with you not only the pieces themselves, but some of the scripture and teachings that shaped the artwork while I was making it. I hope you enjoy it, and if you are interested in seeing more of my artwork you can find it at concordforge.com!

Sunday School Singers is looking for adult or teen volunteers to lead the kids’ communion singing during service each week. During communion, children sing 2 simple songs in the balcony using poster board cue cards. A volunteer is needed to hold the cards, lead the singing and monitor the kids. Will you please consider volunteering during a Sunday service? This is a quick and simple way to volunteer, as the songs are preselected and the cards are organized and ready to go in the balcony for you. Use the SignUpGenius QR code to sign up for Sunday services when you will be in attendance. Thank you for your help! Please call or text Shannon Crosby at 417-597-5895 with any questions.
