008 proved to be an interesting year once again for Trinity College Waterpolo, with some new coaches, some extremely dedicated and talented players and an unprecedented positive attitude for all concerned. Once again filling the role Mr Jim Shackleton of 1st VIII Coach was the 1st VII Waterpolo Manager extremely passionate and enthusiastic Trinity Old Boy, Mr Antony Matkovich (‘94). Antony’s experience and dedication to the sport of waterpolo really shone through this season, with all senior players showing an increased level of motivation and cohesion to previous years. The 2nd VIII team was fortunate to be coached by another Trinity Old Boy, a graduate of 2007, Mr Brenton Bush. For the keen and fast developing Middle School teams, Mr Paul Van Vliet was joined by the enthusiastic Ms Lisa MacKintosh. Although not a championship season, this season showed great promise for the future of the sport at Trinity. Led by Captain and goalkeeper, Sam Burke, the players made the opposition earn every point scored

against them. Some very hard fought wins rewarded the team’s efforts, and some exceptionally narrow losses against some truly talented opposition inspired the players to “strive manfully” to improve their performance in the next game. Round 1 saw Trinity facing off against Aquinas. In a very hard fought game, Trinity went down 7 goals to 2, however, the scorecard does not do justice to the efforts of the Trinity players. Round 2 had Trinity bounce back against Guildford Grammar School, with a motivational 6-3 win. Round 3 brought Scotch College to the Curtis Aquatic Centre, and unfortunately the team lost 8 goals to 4. Round 4 was also disappointing, with a 15 to 6 loss to Christ Church Grammar School. Round 5 again saw a return to fine form with a 9 goals to 5 defeat of Wesley College. Round 6 was a Trinity bye, leading into the final round. Unfortunately Round 7 was to be the darkest of the season, when an under strength side, due to the loss of some key players, lost to Hale School 16 goals to 3. Overall not a stellar season, but the efforts of many Year 10 and 11 players will ensure that the next few seasons of Trinity College Waterpolo will be promising indeed.
