disappointed with the result (which was initially incorrectly announced and had us only 10 points off a win), the Trinity team conducted themselves with great sportsmanship and dignity, a testimony to the character of the boys in the team. It was noticeable that there was a significant improvement in the standard of athletics at several other schools which would indicate that the 2009 Inters will be even more difficult to win. Congratulations to the U/14, U/15 and Open athletes who all won their respective age groups and to team Captain Travis Colyer who was the top individual points scorer in the Open age group from any school at the Inters. Matthew Davies also had a great day, winning the Old Boys’ Trophy for the highest scoring individual athlete on the day.

n the final Athletics Inters to be held at Perry Lakes, the Trinity Athletics team finished a creditable second to a well rounded Aquinas team. Training commenced immediately after the winter sport season finished and it was very pleasing to see the large number of boys turn up for what would be a short, intense season of only four weeks duration. The College Age Championships was the first real indication of the strengths and weaknesses within the team and provided an opportunity for the talent of the Year 8 boys to be scrutinised. These athletes showed that they had plenty of ability and indications were that this group would more than hold their own. Congratulations to Matthew Davies, Trent Bradshaw, James Cumming, Clayton Arnez and Joshua Hicks who were Age Champions from the under 14 age group through to Open respectively. Team Vice Captain Matthew Cowie set two new College records in the open age group shot put and discus event. The old records of 15.83m for shot and 46.60m for discus were set in 1979 by David Court (Class of 1979) with Matt registering throws of at 17.78m and 50.32m
Two Open athletes set new Inters records – Josh Hicks ran the 150m in a staggering 4 min. 02.9 secs breaking the old mark of 4 min. 05.3 secs set by another Trinity athlete, Stephen Spiers back in 1985. Matt Cowie broke the Inters records and his own Trinity record with a throw of 54.88 metres in the discus, breaking a record that had stood for 26 years. Matt Cowie
The following Saturday featured the traditional meet with Aquinas and Hale. Unlike the previous year, conditions were conducive to good performances and the boys once again pushed for a spot in the team. The participation rate, a feature of this year’s team, was again evident with 135 boys representing the College at this meet. Inters Day was once again a tight battle between Trinity and Aquinas for most of the day with neither school being able to get a significant lead. Aquinas went into the 1500m events with a lead of around 50 points, a margin the middle distance boys reduced to about 25 points with five relays to come. The Aquinas relays proved better than ours and they were comparatively comfortable and deserving winners at the conclusion of the carnival. Although obviously
