You Are Invited! to take a step along the path of discipleship by participating in the opportunities which are presented here in this booklet! This booklet is meant to help you find ways to become more intentional in your Christian journey by sharing with you the many opportunities to connect with others in our Trinity family to study, to serve, to pray, to fellowship, to explore, to give, and more. There is such power in gathering with our Christian sisters and brothers, and if you haven’t had an experience like this yet, please take the opportunity to do so. If you are an experienced small grouper, invite someone along with you. If you haven’t been to a small group in a while, please include a group in your plan for the coming months. You will notice icons at the top of pages and besides some of the small groups. These represent spiritual types and they are Spiritual Head, Heart, Soul, Hands & Feet. We have another booklet called Trinity Discipleship Path (also see pg. 4) that is available to you, which goes into detail about finding your Spiritual Type. We do not all connect with God in the same ways, and knowing your Spiritual Type can help as you make choices about the groups in which you might like to participate.

You are invited to take a step in discipleship this fall. We hope that you will use this booklet, in conjunction with the Trinity Discipleship Path booklet to do just that. Know that all groups are open to all people! You are welcome to bring a friend, neighbor, relative, or someone who is already a part of the Trinity family. Grace and peace, The Small Group Ministry Team Rev. Deb De Vos, Maureen Boer, Lynn Cameron, Lou Ann Harris, Sharon Hoff, and Arlene McCollum 3

The Trinity Discipleship Path (a preview. See separate booklet by this name for details) The Trinity Discipleship Path is not a new program, a new small group, or a new ministry of our church. Rather, it is a framework to help us live more fully into our call to be and make disciples for the transformation of the world and to be a fellowship seeking to share the love and word of Jesus Christ with all. We become disciples by God’s grace and through intentional effort to let God’s grace change us into people who love God and love our neighbors the way God loves. Discipleship is about active engagement. It’s not passive. It doesn’t just happen to us. The Discipleship Path gives us something to engage with. It helps us as a church to be sure we are providing tools and steps along the path for participants to grow as disciples. It helps each of us as disciples to make use of those tools and take the steps to grow further along our path. The Discipleship Path helps us as a church to take spiritual responsibility to do what we can to help you share the love and word of Jesus Christ with all, and it helps you take spiritual responsibility to do the same. The Discipleship Path is not a one size fits all kind of thing. In fact, one of the great gifts of the Path is that it helps us to see there are various spiritual types, which allow each of us to connect deeply with God in different ways. It is also not linear, meaning that our Discipleship Path is not usually a straight line from point A to point B. God often encourages us to meander a bit in order to grow in breadth as well as depth, to create a more balanced experience and expression of the love and word of Jesus Christ. The Discipleship Path also serves as a reminder that we are indeed on a journey. Sometimes it’s easy, even in very active churches, to become stagnant, to continue to do the same things over and over

5

and wonder why we aren’t growing. Sometimes we forget what we are moving toward, what the point of discipleship is. In Mark 12:28-34 Jesus tells us that the two greatest commandments are to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength,” and to “love your neighbor as yourself.” John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, called the goal of discipleship Total Sanctification or Christian Perfection, which is to love perfectly, as God loves. We are called to be holy, and this happens in partnership and communion with God, the source of all grace. As we move toward the center we experience salvation more fully. We dwell more fully in the Kingdom of God. And this also happens in partnership and communion with others in your church family. As we move closer to God, we also grow closer to one another, and vice versa. We do not travel alone either. We need both God and others to grow as disciples. The first step in this invitation to be on the Discipleship Path is to get to know your spiritual type. Are you someone who is most oriented to Head type spirituality? Maybe you are more of a Heart person? Or a Soul person? Or a Hands and Feet person? Most likely you are a combination, resonating most with a couple of these types, while feeling less at home with the others. In the other booklet, The Trinity Discipleship Path, you will find a short inventory to help you further determine your type and also more detailed descriptions of each. We hope that you will accept this invitation to become more intentional in your discipleship and faith journey. Look for The Trinity Discipleship Path booklet for much more information.

Spiritual Gifts and our Discipleship Path A Spiritual Gifts Inventory or Assessment helps individuals identify their God-given gifts for living faithfully as Christian disciples day by day and find meaningful ways to use their gifts in connection with others through the community of faith. God has given us all gifts and very often they are revealed through our passions and talents. The process of the inventory helps people understand the nature of spiritual gifts and ways to enhance the effectiveness of their gifts in community and service with and for others. The Trinity Discipleship Path is a framework that helps us to live more fully into our call to be and make disciples for the transformation of the world and to be a fellowship seeking to share the love and word of Jesus Christ with all. The discipleship path helps us as a church to be sure we are providing tools and steps for participants to grow as disciples. Just as we all have different spiritual gifts we also have different spiritual types. This workshop will help you to not only identify your gifts, but also your spiritual type in order to guide you in how you engage with the church and others in your journey as a disciple of Christ seeking to love and serve God. Lectio Divina Practice of Scripture Reading "Lectio Divina", is a Latin term, that means "divine reading". It describes a way of reading the Scriptures whereby we gradually let go of our own agenda and open ourselves to what God wants to say to us. Join us each week as we engage this practice using the scripture that will be preached on the upcoming weekend. As you begin to explore the passage early in the week, it will take root and allow you to encounter God in a transformational way. Leader: Start Date: Duration : Location:

Rev. Deb De Vos (ddevos@catchthespirit.org or 908-852-3020 X17) Tuesday, September 25, 7:00-8:30 p.m. Every Tuesday all year The Rotunda (Main church building)

Centering Prayer Want to grow more deeply in your prayer life? Want to create a habit of praying and dwelling in God’s presence? We’ll gather every week to practice the art of Centering Prayer. This is a type of silent prayer through which we learn to experience God’s presence within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer. Rather, it adds depth of meaning to all prayer and facilitates the movement from more active modes of prayer into a receptive prayer of resting in God. You’re welcome to join at any time. Each week, we’ll review the “how” of this type of prayer, engage in it for about 20 minutes, and then reflect as people feel led about their experience. Join anytime and come as often as you can, but don’t worry if you need to miss. Leader: Start Date: Duration: Location:

Savor Suppers: Food & Conversation for Women We hear frequently of the desire of women at Trinity to connect in faith, yet we also hear from so many that it’s difficult to join a small group, even for a few weeks. Savor Suppers make this possible for many! Savor Suppers bring together small group gatherings of women, just a few at a time, with no commitment beyond the one time event. Once or twice a month, a different woman from the congregation will host a simple meal at her home for five other women. As you gather for literal bread, we hope you will also experience spiritual bread. As you savor the meal, we hope you will also savor the experience of God, grace, and faithful conversation. There will be further details and signup instructions as each supper approaches. Leader:

Trinity Church is a BeADisciple.com Congregational Partner It is through this partnership that we are able to connect you with the various online groups you will find at the BeADisciple website. This fall, you can connect to several online opportunities, which allow you to directly join a group with others around the world. These are excellent courses, ranging in length and intensity. You are welcome to explore the www.BeADisciple.com site for even more opportunities. In the future, we will continue to create our own online groups for the Trinity community. And we will also have the opportunity to create online small groups for the Trinity community in partnership with The Upper Room Ministries and Wesley Theological School. These are exciting ways to bring excellent, enlivening small group interaction and education to you wherever you are in ways that might better meet your availability than many of our in-person groups. To register for one of these groups, you will need to do so directly with BeADisciple.com. There is a fee associated with each course, which you will also pay directly to them. If you need any assistance or have any questions, please contact Rev. Deb De Vos (ddevos@catchthespirit.org or 908-852-3020 X17) BeADisciple.com is a ministry of the Richard and Julia Wilke Institute for Discipleship. The Institute was founded at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas in 2001. The college is a United Methodist institution of higher education founded in 1885, and provides degrees for ministry vocations both on its residential campus and online. The Institute is “dedicated to providing educational opportunities that nurture and enrich Christian leaders – lay and clergy – for effective living and ministry.”

The Academy for Spiritual Formation The Academy for Spiritual Formation is an experience of disciplined Christian community emphasizing holistic spirituality— nurturing body, mind, and spirit. The program is ecumenical in nature and meant for all those who hunger for a deeper relationship with God, including both lay and clergy persons. Each Academy fosters spiritual rhythms—of study and prayer, silence and liturgy, solitude and relationship, rest and exercise. Academy participants rediscover Christianity's rich spiritual heritage through worship, learning, and fellowship. In covenant community and at a personal level, participants find time and space to discern direction, make covenants, and practice commitments. The Academy for Spiritual Formation recognizes that the Holy Spirit is the enabling power in all Christian spiritual formation. It is designed to provide a setting where a spiritually disciplined community of lay and clergy can open their lives to receive God's love and grace so that they increasingly may become spiritual leaven within the Body of Christ. Two Year Academy Two-Year Academies meet in residence (in the same location) for five days each calendar quarter (total of 40 days). The first year (sessions 1-4) focuses on the inward journey with Christ; the second year (sessions 5-8) begins to shift to outward aspects of spiritual leadership. Throughout the two years, participants engage in spiritual practices of body, mind and spirit in the context of a supportive community. Between sessions, participants covenant to deepen their spiritual lives through journaling, spiritual direction, reading, and care of the physical body. First and second year covenant commitments provide a focus for spiritual growth and a focus for one's engagement in the world. Dates: August 27, 2018 - April 18, 2020 in Gallant, AL To view other upcoming dates, cost and locations go to http:/academy.upperroom.org/about/two-year/

5-Day Academy Worship shapes the heart and soul of the Academy. With forty or fifty participants, the Academy community is just the right size for rich worship experiences. Following ancient practices, the day begins with Morning Prayer and closes with Night Prayer; we begin and end each day with God. The Sacrament of Holy Communion or Eucharist is celebrated every day as well, a time to "taste and see the goodness of the Lord." The Upper Room Worship book offers a wide variety of musical selections and liturgies that are theologically sound and appropriate for this spiritual formation journey. Throughout the week you will meet in a small group called a covenant group. Here you will be invited to reflect on your spiritual journey and share how God is working in you during the Academy. As the week goes on, the covenant group can be a sacred place for spiritual growth and intimacy. Dates: To view upcoming dates, cost and locations go to http://academy.upperroom.org/about/five-day
