LETTER A

PRESIDENT FROM THE

M i c h e l l e G e r m a n s o n , O . P. My Dear Friends, Sweet Jesus, what a super-awesome year of celebration! I am truly humbled by your love, support and thoughtfulness. Heavens, I was just doing what I love best in the place that I love best. I have so fallen in love with the mission that is Trinity as well as ALL the amazing people who empower it, catapult it into reality. Our dream, our mission, our vision has been the impetus, the driving force of plunging forward, of being all that we were founded to be, of being more than we are! Because we embraced our mission with passion’ we set out to achieve one goal at a time. We never let the daunting challenges overwhelm us. Instead they became the driving force. We stretched our imaginings; we became a community with an amazing can do and can be spirit! We’ve grown in true Trinity style as an unstoppable force toward true “awesomeness”! Sweet Jesus, we even have a waiting list this year for our incoming freshman class! We believe. We dream. We are Trinity! Yes, we think beyond the moment, never being ones to play it safe. We stretch our imaginings. We build on our tradition of academic excellence, yet we’re bold and courageous enough to ask what more we can be. The empowerment of our loving women has, is and ever will be the driving force.

It is the partnership of the Board, administration, faculty, staff, alumnae and parents that has empowered the mission to be the best it can be for our young women. We challenge each other away from mediocrity toward excellence. We, together through our commitment and dedication have an

unrelenting drive for truth, for excellence. Due to our sustaining partnership we have taken ahold of the moment and soared into “awesomeness”! What do you mean we can’t -- just watch! I want to sincerely thank you for your loving, caring partnership! Your prayer, active involvement, and generosity have truly jumpstarted the amazing heart of Trinity! Thank you for being a gift to the Trinity women of today. The world is in need of caring, kind, sensitive, intelligent, truth-seeking, actively engaged young women who want to make an impact on life. Your loving support makes this possible. I love being on the Trinity journey with you. It is a privilege to celebrate with you all the special Trinity moments. Oh, how you “happy my heart” as well as the heart of Trinity. Let us continue together to be Blazers blazing new trails. Let us continue to bleed blue for all things Trinity. Let us continue in friendship to be for each other. My love,

FROM THE ALUMNAE DIRECTOR Marigayle Watts Harrington ‘78 Dear Fellow Alumnae and Friends,

TWENTY YEARS is a very long time! It is phenomenal that Sister Michelle, our energetic visionary, has been president of Trinity High School for two decades! Twenty years of Trinity’s 94 year history have been led by this remarkable woman. I truly believe “if not for her….” Trinity’s path would have been much different. As Taylor Nazon ’13 exclaims, “Sister Michelle’s spirit and positive energy are highly contagious. It is like a yawn and it is passed on to everyone she encounters!” This contagious spirit is why Trinity continues to succeed! The center spread of this edition of the Link chronicles all that she has accomplished. After reading it you, too, will have a grateful respect for what she has accomplished for Trinity.

Sister Michelle always defers the credit for all the good that has happened to Trinity to our alumnae, our students and their parents, our faculty, staff and administration, all the friends of Trinity, and of course the wonderful Board of Directors. As you read through the Link and enjoy the pictures and stories of success, you will see she may be right about the role each

person plays in the success of this great institution. Thank you for all you do and have done for Trinity!

As Alumnae Director, I have one request; please complete the alumnae update form either online at www.trinityhs.org or on page 29. Women are generally shy about stating their successes. Please let Trinity know what you are doing and the path you took to get where you are. This information will help us form affinity groups based on occupation and it will help with networking with other alumnae and current Trinity students. Thank you again for believing in Trinity. The vision and success of Sr. Michelle combined with the support of all of our alumnae and friends leads to limitless possibilities for the young women of tomorrow.

I wish you a happy, healthy end to your summer. Kind Regards,

Students plan a surprise assembly to celebrate Sister Michelle’s 20 years!

TRINITY CELEBRATES MISSION THROUGH

PEACE AND JUSTICE WEEK

Out of all of the wonderful events, classes, and service trips that comprised Trinity’s first annual Peace and Justice Week, the memory that continually comes to mind is one that happened in my office the following week. A junior who had won a Silent Auction item wandered meekly into Campus Ministry to ask if I

A popular Auction Prize — Lunch on the roof

still had the bid sheet for her prize. I was skeptical, thinking perhaps she had changed her mind and did not want to pay for her item. Instead, I learned that this Blazer wanted to know the name of the student who was the runner-up so she could invite this other young woman to join her in participating in the prize. After I restrained myself from hugging the student and spinning her around in the air, I realized that Peace and Justice Week was nothing new to the Trinity community. It was a celebration of what we already know and inspiration to do more. The events of the week were focused on the four Dominican essentials: prayer, study, community and ministry. Dr. Bouillette relinquished her leadership of morning prayer for the week to let students choose and lead prayers focused on social justice issues to begin the day, and we added a blessing before each lunch period. For study, faculty members were encouraged to emphasize issues of peace and justice within the curriculum. On Tuesday, students and faculty members gathered in the library after school to watch and discuss “Tambien la lluvia” (Also the Rain), a movie about the human rights work of the Dominican Friars in America 500 years ago and the continued need for courageous ministry in our global society.

Link Page 6

By Tara Segal Suchland, ‘01

We fostered community with our Faculty and Staff sponsored silent auction. Throughout the week, students were invited to bid on a wide variety of items ranging from lunch on the roof deck, to extra graduation tickets, to the highly anticipated “Queen for the Day”. The winner of the latter, sophomore Gaby Ault-Zimmerman, was greeted by Mrs. Susan Bedell with a tiara, boa, and decorated locker, and her books were carried around as Mrs. Bedell escorted her through the hallways and provided lunch for Gaby and her friends. The generosity of the Trinity community enabled us to donate all proceeds (nearly $1,500!) to West Suburban Catholic Charities whose food pantries had a difficult year. Along with the monetary donation, students donated thousands of boxes of macaroni and cheese! To further our ministry and create relationships with those we serve, several students participated in service projects at soup kitchens and senior theology students planned and led a Service Learning project as part of their coursework. These members of the Class of 2012 taught the children at St. Angela’s about healthful eating by creating fun treats like veggie people and apple-marshmallow mouths, and spent time with the formerly homeless residents of Interfaith House by inviting them to design t-shirts with their favorite image of peace. This event was completely planned and carried out by the seniors (down to lunch for the group budgeted at $1 per person.) The Class of 2012 proved to be generous, kind, joyful and compassionate — qualities that will empower them to work for peace and justice far beyond their Trinity experience.

The week ended with a Hunger Banquet. All members of the Trinity community were invited to skip their usual lunch and have a meager meal of rice and water to raise awareness and create solidarity with the hungry of the world. Eight members of the community were randomly selected each lunch period to join the “First World” table. In the midst of their teachers, administrators and peers who sat on the floor around them, these select few sat at a table with linens and china and enjoyed a feast of sparkling cider, salad, pizza and cupcakes. Hunger Banquet participants and onlookers were struck by the contrast of the meals and touched by the opportunity to live out their lenten fast with the greater Trinity community. Peace and Justice Week plans are already in the works for the 2012-2013 academic year!

A New Tradition at Trinity

Mia Morgan receives her diploma from her mother, Kenya Morgan ‘94.

Maggie Sullivan receives her diploma from her grandmother, Ann Sweeney Sullivan ’52.

Kellie Poindexter receives her diploma from her grandmother Barbara Sullivan Poindexter ’58.

A new tradition began at the class of 2012 Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement. Trinity alumnae with a daughter and/or granddaughter in the class walked on stage with their daughter and/or granddaughter and presented her diploma to her. It was very touching to see the alumnae who were able to share this bond with their daughter and/or granddaughter. Members of the Trinity Board of Directors and Trinity employees with daughters in the class were also able to present their daughter her diploma.

FROM THE VICE-PRESIDENT OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT Christine Lee Bollettino ‘68

Dear Alumnae and Friends, What an exciting and fulfilling year for Trinity! We have seen the young women of Trinity excel in academics, athletics and service. The Senior Class of 139 experienced record breaking scholarship recognition of 17.5 million dollars and the honor of two National Merit Finalists. The students logged over 20,000 service hours and athletically the volleyball, basketball and softball teams were all instate sectional play. The Health and Fitness Center officially opened and under the experienced eye of the new fitness director, every student has access to the facility, from 3-7PM! The Freshman Class of 2016 is closed and has been fully enrolled since April. Trinity is empowering its students, and more and more young women and their parents are making us their school of choice. Supporting an academically strong, private education takes real partnership among all the stakeholders. Over the past six months we have witnessed some phenomenal philanthropy and leadership: a Challenge Grant that netted over $100,000, significant planned gifts that vitally support Trinity’s programs, the strength of parent support through the Pledge for Blazer Excellence Program, a growing Sponsor a Student Program, a significant memorial scholarship gift that recognizes "girl power" and the newly established Board-led, Sister Michelle Germanson Assistance Fund.

You, our alumnae, parents and friends recognize the value of a great education and are creatively partnering to advance Trinity to new levels of achievement. The investment of your daughters, your gifts and your support speaks volumes to our continued success! The number of alumnae donors listed in this publication and the consistency of their gifts are a model we hope will be emulated. Help us to continue to advance Trinity. Please visit our website and familiarize yourself with the opportunities that closely match your philanthropy. Each and every gift significantly enhances this wellrounded academic institution for our future alumnae. These young women will continue, as classes have for over ninety-four years, to make an impact and to change the world, person by person. Feel the pride and power of this truly excellent school — your school, your Trinity.

P.S. Please read below about this inspiring Heritage Society gift from the Uscila Family.

The Norma Moca Uscila Scholarship Fund

By Michelle Balich Uscila ‘95

Amy ‘01, Kristin ‘98, and Michelle ‘95 with their father, Joe.

While our mom never attended Trinity as a student, she was always a "Trinity girl" at heart. Starting in 1995, just after Michelle had graduated from Trinity and Kristen became a sophomore, our mom worked with the Institutional Advancement office as the Director of Publications. When she wasn’t busy creating the Link, or capturing photos around the school, she was cheering us on, alongside our dad, at our volleyball games and track meets, attending our choir, dance and theater performances, or making sure we were well fed before our big IB exams. She was a huge supporter of our academic and extracurricular activities at Trinity, and was a constant push for us to do our best and accomplish more in our lives. She truly believed in the “awesomeness” that Trinity provided us, as Sister Michelle might say. Even after Amy graduated in 2001, our mom continued to work at Trinity for another 10 years, and would always remind us of the leadership skills Trinity brought out in us, and that we needed to continue to show our “girl power!”, as she would always say to us.

In August 2011, our mom was diagnosed with amyloidosis, a serious form of cancer found in the blood that was attacking her

heart and lungs. Shortly after diagnosis, she succumbed to the disease at the early age of 57. She spent so much of her life giving to us and to everyone around her, that we wanted her inspiration to carry on at Trinity. In her name, we have created the Norma (Moca) Uscila “Girl Power” scholarship. This scholarship will be offered to applicants attending Trinity that inspire others, lead by example, and demonstrate “girl power” everyday, just as our mom did. To learn more about this scholarship, please contact Christine Lee Bollettino at 708.453.8396.

1990 Accepted a position on Trinity’s first Board of Directors. 1992 The Board of Directors votes to adopt a President/Principal model, a relatively new idea in secondary education. 1992 Sister is offered and accepts the role of Trinity’s first President, leaving her position as Dean of Students at Dominican University. 1994 After a thorough assessment of the enrollment which had not increased since spring of 1981, Sr. Michelle worked with the Board of Directors to develop a strategic plan. 1994 Trinity was granted an International Baccalaureate (IB) School Charter. It was the first single-sex school and the second high school in the state of Illinois. 1995 Full block scheduling was adopted. 1996 Trinity’s first major fundraising activity since 1962, The Technology Project, was launched and successfully completed. 1997 Trinity graduates its first IB Class. Trinity’s success rate is 90% compared to world average of 80%. 1998 The “old” gym was renovated as a result of the competitive level of Trinity athletics.

ME

YEARS!

An excerpt from Junior, Taylor Nazon’s speech about Sister Michelle.

“Trinity High School was the first Catholic school I had ever stepped into.

2000 The library was renovated and wired for technology. 2001 The entire school became wireless.

2002 State recognized Trinity athletic programs gave the impetus to a Capital Campaign to build a state-of-the-art athletic facility. 2004 The gorgeous athletic facility is dedicated and named in Sister Michelle’s honor. “Her house” boasts ten sports and twenty-one teams, several of which have been honored with sectional, regional and state awards.

...before I came to Trinity if you said, “nun” the first images I conjured were the ones I’d seen on the “Sweet Life of Zack and Cody,” the stern, cross bearing, habit wearing old women who slapped desks with heavy rulers and detested any loud noises or general outlandish behavior. Talk about an awakening! Probably one of the best examples against character stereotyping

I’ve ever heard! But more than that, I’m really referring to her energy, her aura, her spirit. They say young children have almost a sixth sense for peoples’

characters and their intentions. This fades as we get older. But when

I’m around her, I still feel that. Without having to know her, I like her, I love her, I trust her,. That’s her spirit. And it is incredible. One of its most amazing qualities? It’s highly contagious. It’s like a

2005 Fine Arts gains great support from Sr. Michelle in the replacement of the theatre’s light and sound system. 2007 The tenth IB class graduated. Trinity’s impressive passing rate far exceeds the international average.

2008 The final aspect of the Athletic Facility, the Health and Fitness Center on the mezzanine level was coneptualized and developed. 2009 Trinity-Dominican Scholars program began. 2011 Her dreams become reality as the Athletic Facility is completed with a Health and Fitness Center containing a dance, Pilates and yoga studio, a cardio fitness area and a multipurpose workout room. This facility is available to every student and faculty member. 2012 A 15-year strategic plan as well as a Plan for Trinity’s Centennial (2018) are adopted. Link Page 17

yawn. She yawns her spirit of love, and power, and enthusiasm,

and confidence and independence, and goodness at one student, and

the yawn is passed on, from student to student.

What’s even more incredible? This yawn isn’t confined just to the

walls of Trinity. It is limitless, so the yawn is spread, by everyone

she has directly and indirectly affected, not only throughout Trinity,

but to the outside world as well. It is spread when a student on her

own time keeps lonely, forgotten senior citizens company. Or when

another student tells her family about Friends of the Orphans and

what they can do to help. One encounter at a time, Sister Michelle,

through us,is changing the world. “She has no idea the effect she can

have.” Peeta Mellark, “Hunger Games.”

Sister Michelle is energy.”

Sister Michelle is Trinity! Summer 2012

Supporting Financial Assistance

Sister Michelle Germanson was given Trinity’s highest honor, The Trinitarian Award at Bal Dominique 2012! Hundreds of wellwishers celebrated with her on March 24th in the elegant Gold Coast Room of the Drake Hotel. The Board of Directors sponsored the event and Katie and Bill Planek were the gracious chair couple. The mood in the room was indescribable, as the attendees felt such pride and love for Sister Michelle and all that she has done for Trinity. The Al Sophia orchestra had all the guest dancing the night away! It was, as Sister Michelle so often says…AWESOME!!

ALUMNAE TEA 2012

Fifty alumnae from the Classes of 1928-1956 enjoyed an afternoon filled with art, music, food and friendship. The annual Alumnae Tea held on March 27th, was a joyous celebration for all. Our archivist, Sue Vrechek was thrilled to hear about the history of Trinity from our alumnae. Similarly, our alumnae were tickled to see the pictures that Sue has unearthed and chronicled. Next year’s Alumnae Tea is scheduled for April 11, 2013.

BARBARA RINELLA BOOK DRAMATIZATION BOUTIQUE AND LUNCHEON

It comes as no surprise that Barbara once again managed to mesmerize her sold out audience of 250 alumnae and friends as she presented The Paris Wife. Before the presentation everyone in attendance enjoyed pastries, coffee, and most importantly, good conversation. The commanderie continued, after the dramatization those in attendance were able to shop at several unique boutiques and enjoy a delicious lunch. Trinity’s premier choir, Le Regazze, wowed the audience with their performance during the luncheon. This day was truly one to remember! This annual event is scheduled for Friday May 10, 2013, so make sure to mark your calendars now!

T-CLUB SPORTS DAY

For twenty splendid years Trinity Alumnae and friends have gathered together to laugh and socialize. At some point during these fun times the women even find the time to play a little bit of golf! This year proved to be no different as sixty-five alumnae and friends gathered at Eaglewood Resort to take part in these wonderful festivities. As you all know, there is not much that can stop a Trinity woman, and these women proved that to be true by conquering the intense heat and having a great time while doing it. Nothing could melt away the spirits of this fun-loving group. Don’t miss out on the excitement and be sure to save the date for the 21st annual which will take place on June 27, 2013. Special thanks to all the raffle and hole sponsors!

WHAT’S NEWS WITH YOU?

Greetings! I hope you are all enjoying a great summer and preparing something to send me for our next edition. As you can see, we are a little short of material for this one! I can offer some extremely interesting occupations, activities and achievements featuring your classmates: everything from a worm farmer who works in a downtown hotel to a musical comedy star to a crack softball player. Read on and enjoy!

THE THIRTIES

Those of you who celebrated more than one graduation this year…how does EIGHT in the same month sound? That’s how many occurred in the family of Mary Duggan Philbin ’39. “My daughter, Meg Philbin McKinley ’79, is having an unusual year, “writes Mary, “All five of her children are graduating in May, at every academic level: PhD, masters, bachelors, high school and grade school. In addition, my daughters, Mimi Philbin Carlson ’72 and Marianne Philbin ’73 each have a daughter graduating from high school, and my son Jim Mischler-Philbin has a daughter graduating from 8th grade, bringing the grand total to eight graduating grandchildren in a single month. And in that same month, I am celebrating my 90th birthday!” Wow! That sounds like lots of parties to me!

THE FORTIES

Mercedes Quinn Weber ’47 and her husband, Don, who live in Darien, IL, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on February 2, surrounded by their six children and twelve of their nineteen grandchildren. Among those congratulating the happy couple were Trinity alums Claire Daley Archibald ’45, Florence Phelan Higgins ’47, Judith Hogan McGah ’47, Rita Kelly Brown ’47, Mary Jo Walpole Hannon ’46, and nieces Kathleen Latchford Gaucher ’66 and Julie Latchford Clark ’74. Congratulations on reaching this wonderful milestone!

THE FIFTIES

The twentieth annual Mini Reunion of the Class of 1953 was held on June 26th and 27th. This year nineteen of us happily assembled at Peggy Carey’s Long Beach home for lunch and a great afternoon of beach walking and conversation. Dinner was enjoyed at the Long Beach Country Club. Sleeping accommodations were provided at either Peg’s home or that of Carol Lord-Evans’ daughter, Barbara Gorowski in Grand Beach. The party continued the next morning with brunch at Barbara’s, provided by Carol, Carolyn Burke and Mary Lou Alfini. Goodbyes were tempered by the thought of next year. Even though we will be celebrating our big 60th Reunion in the fall, we hope to have the mini in Lake Geneva in June of 2013.

THE SIXTIES

Patti Byrne Sheehan ’62 and husband Phil are affectionately known as “Mama and Papa Bear” at the West Suburban PADS shelter where they have volunteered for almost 20 years. PADS offers shelter, transitional housing and employment services to people in the area, The Sheehans became involved after they saw an article in their church bulletin asking for donations and supplies. At the time, their children, Margaret and Tim, both needed community service hours for school, so they went to the depot where the shelter was collecting supplies. At first, Patti and Phil worked at the depot, sorting silverware and doing laundry on Saturdays. Over time, their involvement has grown and so has the organization. The program now has over 1,000 volunteers. Patti and Phil live in River Forest. Elizabeth Hannon ’62 is living in Delray Beach, FL.

Maria Ambrosia Pudlo ’65 and husband Thomas live in Itasca, IL, and own Tiffany Limousine Service. Thomas is slowly recovering from two surgeries, and both are looking forward to their daughter’s wedding this year.

My sister, Kathy Colohan Novy ’65 and I were thrilled to be present when our cousin, Jenny Newhart DeDario ’67, received a fabulous standing ovation for her performance as Mama Rose in the South Bend (IN) Civic Theatre’s production of Gypsy. Jenny took this emotionally and musically demanding role and made it truly her own. The following day, so many fans approached us at brunch that we felt as if we were dining with Madonna! Priscilla Cardenas Barbier ’65 has retired from her assistant principal position at O.A. Thorp Scholastic Academy, a Chicago public school. The student body honored her and her principal, who was also retiring, with a surprise assembly at which both were presented with tiaras.

Bridget Tobin Herald ’67 will be the mother of the groom in August, when son Brian marries Jenni Erickson. Congratulations!

THE SEVENTIES

After 35 years in Northbrook, IL, Patrick and Linda DiBenedetto Bradley ’71 are selling the family homestead, “Sweet Home Chicago.” Lake Geneva, WI, will be where seven grandchildren come to visit. Linda still loves teaching special education students. Judith Zurek Cisco ’72 and husband Leo are living in Fort Mill, CA.

Ginny Young Gronek ’79 and husband Mark live in Elmhurst, IL, where Ginny is a full time substitute teacher at York High School. The Groneks have two grown sons.

Dolores and her husband John have three children: Antonio Salvatore, 7, Miguel Valentino, 6, and Sofia Divina, 1. They live in Berwyn, IL. Dolores is an administrative assistant for the Cook County Department of Facilities Management.

THE 2000'S

Laura Kane ’00 is the Business Travel Sales/Sustainability Manager at the Westin Michigan Avenue Hotel in Chicago. “I lead our green team and green efforts. I continue to promote environmental responsibility – minimizing waste, hazardous substances, improving energy efficiency – doing anything internally to promote sustainability.” Among Laura’s responsibilities is a vermicomposting project. In the hotel’s basement are 5,000 worms consuming food scraps to produce compost. She is also responsible for the hotel’s roof garden, which produces vegetables and herbs for use in the hotel’s kitchens. Laura spends about 30 percent of her time on green projects and the other 70 percent on business travel sales. She has held her current title since February, 2011.

Maureen Eichenold ‘72, for the info!

Molly Mitchell ‘10 writes “This summer I am interning for MSNBC’s Morning Joe Show at 30 Rock. It is both terrific and terrifying as I am living on my own in Midtown Manhattan. I am learning so much and enjoying being a part of NYC’s fast pace. Yesterday, I was the first intern to post on the show’s blog—we had Joan Rivers as a guest! I think of Trinity often and the amazing education I received as part of the IB program. Thank you!”

Carly Soteras ‘07 lives in LA and is working on the TV series CSI New York.

Victoria Whooper ’07 received her B.A. in Theater Arts from Dominican University this past May with a concentration in performance and production. THE TENS

Laura Eichenold ‘10 was recently named one of Wal-Mart’s Athletes of the Week for women’s softball at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater. She led the UW-Whitewater offense with a .550 batting average and a .750 slugging percentage in six games, all against conference opponents. Thanks to Laura’s mom,

Molly in front of the IB Geneva headquarters which she visited last summer on a trip to Switzerland and France.

As for myself, I am still working as a special education teacher aide and have no immediate plans to retire. My major extracurricular activity is the care and feeding of my 150-year-old Victorian house in Chicago’s Lincoln Park, which I am happily rehabbing. (I have no plans to sell or move, either!) Once again, please send me all your news…I print everything I get.
