FROM THE DIRECTOR

T

hank you for joining us tonight to celebrate another year of remarkable progress and for supporting our continuing efforts to create brighter tomorrows for our students, their families, and all of those living with autism.

As a community, we face an enormous challenge. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that one of every 94 children in New Jersey has an autism diagnosis. For boys, this rate rises to 1 in 60. Autism is a lifelong neurological disorder. Those diagnosed face challenges across so many areas of their lives: academics, communication, self-care, behavioral issues, and play. At the same time, autism presents itself very differently in each person. But there is a statistic that gets less attention: There are fewer than 400 professionals in the state with specialized training in understanding and improving behavior – the educators with the proven training to make measurable improvements in the quality of life of those with autism.

Not only does this compound the heartache for the families affected, but it comes at a high societal cost. And while it is heartening to see the recent gains in the attention and resources that are being devoted to autism research programs, these efforts do not address the needs of the thousands of children and their families dealing with autism every day. With your support, at Garden Academy we are addressing this acute need – student-by-student as well as for the field of autism education at large. Last year was our first full year as a state-approved school for students with disabilities. It was our first full year in a fully equipped school facility. This school year, we began efforts to expand our preschool program, serving the enormous need for intensive intervention for young children. With this organizational strength, we have helped all of our students achieve milestones. The stories are as numerous as they are heartwarming: an eight-year-old student who began to speak for the very first time; a nine-year-old student who was able to bike with his siblings for the first time; and our first graduate, a first-grader who has been able to join his peers in his local public school. We have also contributed greatly to the field of autism education. We have provided intensive professional training to over 25 graduate students who will go on to impact countless children over the course of their careers. At the Association for Behavior Analysis International’s Annual Convention earlier this year (attended by more than 4,000 people from over 40 countries), Garden Academy educators gave five presentations. Of course, none of this is possible with tuition alone. None of this is possible without your support. Thank you for coming and thank you for making a difference. Gratefully, Dr. David W. Sidener, BCBA-D Director, Garden Academy
