Change of representative on January 1, 2022 Goodbye, Hans. Welcome Jessica!
Dear avid readers and booksellers So far, picture books have not really been part of our publishing program – this is now changing as Hans ten Doornkaat’s Das Medium Bilderbuch takes a close look at design ideas that make use of the book as a medium in its entirety along with its features and typography. Authors Patric Furrer, Andreas Jud, Stefan Kurath and others ponder on Digitalisierung und Architektur (Digitization and Architecture): Which tools are used in teaching and practice, and what are the connections between the digital and real world? For the future of sustainable building, it is necessary to rethink the use of concrete. Which building materials Beyond Concrete could we still use and what are the current concepts? Besides that, existing urban landscapes are facing changes, too. Densification of Urban Landscapes shows how post-Second World War residential developments are treated today. Kerstin Forster, Andrea Wiegelmann and Andrea Woods wish you inspiring moments.
Since we founded this publishing house in 2015, Hans Frieden has always been right by our side. As our publisher’s representative for Germany and Austria, he not only helped introduce us and our publications to bookstores, he was also always on hand with help and advice, sending monthly reports on his travels, current information and other anecdotes so that we could stay up to date on the industry. As a helpful and forward-looking colleague, he also arranged his replacement in good time so that we were able to hold our representatives’ conference for this preview together with him and his successor Jessica Reitz. Thank you, dear Hans, for the many years of great cooperation. We sincerely wish you all the best for your retirement. And to Jessica, we hope you will have a great start in this profession – welcome on board!

New Look at the Picture Book Everyone knows it and immediately has a picture in mind: This publication is dedicated to the “picture book phenomenon.” However, it does not focus on specific books or content, but rather takes a look at the medium itself: from the technical and formal requirements of printing to the format, paper and binding and ultimately, to special versions of the medium picture book such as pop-up books or hidden-picture books. What are flaps, pre- and postfaces, and page number 32 all about? What about the text-toimage ratio? This publication questions the effect of turning pages on the narrative dynamics, the representation of temporal processes across several pages, and playing with half-pages and cut-outs as well as all kinds of publications that turn a book into a spatial experience. The complexity of a simple reading material has never been analyzed so comprehensively and is only possible in this form thanks to the author’s experience with the medium picture book in all its aspects and across all process stages throughout his entire professional life. The publication focuses on the medium as a whole and analyzes it as an object (of the will to create) and as a subject (whose physicality is part of the experience). It does not forget the role of the picture book as a window to the world with regard to the promotion of reading and the function of a book within picture books (meta picture books). The book accompanies the exhibition Bilderbücher: illustriert & inszeniert, curated by Hans ten Doornkaat. The volume includes an essay on type and layout in picture books by Agnès Laube.

About the author: Hans ten Doornkaat (born 1952) deals with the “medium of picture books” both as editor of the Atlantis publishing house and as children’s book critic for NZZ am Sonntag. For decades, he was a specialist lecturer for librarianship training courses and continuing education for teachers, a jury member and, until 2021, a theory lecturer for illustration at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts HSLU. He has curated several exhibitions on picture books, including for the Swiss National Museum. Instrumental for his thinking about picture books, however, is the constant exchange with illustrators.

Patric Furrer Andreas Jud Stefan Kurath
We are currently in the middle of a second wave of digitization that is affecting both our everyday and our working lives. This is also the case for architecture. Today, however, we are no longer simply talking about uploading and displaying data or creating virtual rooms and objects, but rather about available options for linking and further processing them. Designations such as the “Internet of Things” along with smart technologies and, based on them, concepts like Smart Cities suggest a total networking of objects, spaces and people using algorithms. The connections between our physical and digital worlds are becoming more diverse and complex.

This book aims to highlight findings on the development of architectural ideas and their translation into the built environment in the context of digitization. It shows how architects work today and what characterizes contemporary architectural practice.

Against this background, the contributing authors no longer ask how digitization will change and influence architectural practice, but rather how the connections between the digital and physical world can be maintained or even used to stimulate each other. This interpretation helps to add a necessary portion of realism to the current discourse on digitization and its effects on architectural practice.
About the editors: Patric Furrer (born 1980) is an architect and a lecturer at the Institut Konstruktives Entwerfen (IKE) of Zurich University of Applied Sciences ZHAW. Andreas Jud (born 1981) is an architect and research assistant at the Institut Urban Landscape (IUL) of Zurich University of Applied Sciences ZHAW. Together, they run the architectural office Furrer Jud Architects in Zurich. Stefan Kurath (born 1976) works as an architect and urbanist from his office in Zurich and Grisons and serves as Head of the Institut Urban Landscape at the School of Architecture, Design and Civil Engineering of Zurich University of Applied Sciences together with Regula Iseli. He thinks, writes, researches and teaches on the subject of urban landscapes and practical architecture.

How Will We Plan and Build in the Future?
FHNW INSTITUT ARCHITEKTUR, ANNETTE HELLE, BARBARA LENHERR (HRSG.)
BEYOND CONCRETE
STRATEGIEN
In view of our limited resources, we must also rethink out approaches in the construction industry. This requires a constructive design culture that paves new ways of dealing with building materials. Beyond Concrete. Strategies for a post-fossil Baukultur combines contributions from the symposium “Constructive Futures – Beyond Concrete” , which marked the start of the academic year 2021/2022 at the School of Architecture of University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland FHNW. This academic year is special, as all bachelor’s and master’s degree programs must withstand the unreflective fallback on supposedly proven construction methods in order to explore constructive and future-oriented solutions beyond our professional comfort zones. The symposium provided an opportunity to reflect on where the construction and planning industry currently stands and why a fundamental change seems inevitable to us. With contributions by Axel Schubert and Kim Förster, the first section of the publication provides a general overview of the challenges of building for a post-carbon society. In the second part, Rotor and Circular highlight the potential of reusing buildings and components. The third and last part includes contributions by BC, Harquitectes and Anupama Kundoo, whose projects show possible “constructive futures,” thus casting a positive look into the future. With contributions by Laurens Bekemans, Kim Förster, Renaud Haerlingen, Anupama Kundoo, Kerstin Müller, Xavier Ros Majó, Axel Schubert and introductory essays by Annette Helle, Axel Humpert, Barbara Lenherr, Dominique Salathé, Tim Seidel and Harald R. Urban Densification Strategies
Design
Typography
Densifi cation of Urban Land scapes Anke Domschky Stefan Kurath Simon Mühlebach Urs Primas
Post-war residential developments across Europe, which make up the majority of housing stock, are under pressure to develop further. How to deal with those dwellings has thus become one of the core questions on building among existing build-ing stock. Most of them are in need of renovation and, due to their urban composition, are accompanied by large open spaces, which seem to provide easily developable structures. At the same time, these developments and quarters are valuable historic witnesses. Densification efforts should therefore always allow for the overall composition of the development. For the first time, this workbook offers planners and historic preservationists as well as municipalities, city administrations, cooperatives, clients and owners a comprehensive guide to preserving the qualities of post-war residential developments due for densification. In its analysis, it also considers aspects of landscape planning, socio-politics and the conservation of historic gardens. Using selected, extensively documented case studies of densifications as well as densification experiments for yet to be densified developments, the editors show that inner-city densification is possible even when considering building culture, built heritage and commemorative values. The publication shows procedures for a mindful definition of individual conservation goals that can serve as guidelines in the course of planning densification. Therefore, it not only offers valuable assistance in recognizing and maintaining the individual and often unique character of a residential development, but also presents planning criteria that allow for a meaningful densification.
