Agencies such as the International Energy (IEA) predicts a world wide increase of over 50% in primary energy demand in the next 20 or so years. 2004 – 2008 the world population has increased by 5% annually, thus, an increase in energy consumption. World consumption in 2010 has increased by 5%. The Caribbean is apart of this increase both in population and consumption. As the demand for energy increases Jamaica and the wider Caribbean will face results of limited energy and limited production capacity, if strong industry dynamism is not combined to fight the crisis and invest in renewable energy solutions. Wind Energy The terms "wind energy" or "wind power" describe the process by which the wind is used to generate mechanical power or electricity. Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy in the wind into mechanical power. This mechanical power can be used for specific tasks or a generator can convert this mechanical power into electricity. Wind turbines, like aircraft propeller blades, turn in the moving air and power an electric generator that supplies an electric current. Simply stated, a wind turbine is the opposite of a fan. Instead of using electricity to make wind, like a fan, wind turbines use wind to make electricity. The wind turns the blades, which spin a shaft, which connects to a generator and makes electricity. Horizontal axis wind turbine - like a traditional wind mill, it is independent from the direction of the wind. Vertical axis wind turbine - like the eggbeater-style Darrieus model, named after its French inventor, it is where the rotor is parallel oriented to the direction of the wind. A wind turbine both vertical and horizontal requires a minimum wind speed (cut- in) of 3-5 m/s, and delivers power at a wind speed of 12 -14 m/s. With high seed (cut-offs) the wind turbine stops for safety reasons, by using brakes that lock the rotor or by methods based on phenomenon of stall.


Vertical Axis Wind Energy Being built since 1920 vertical axis wind turbines (or VAWTs) are a type of wind machine characterized by a number of moving parts in its structure, which gives it a high resistance to moving strong winds, and the ability to exploit any wind direction without having to continually reorient. It is a very versatile machinery suitable for household use and for the centralized production of electricity in order of giga watt.

They have the main rotor shaft arranged vertically. Key advantages of this arrangement are that the turbine does not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective. This is an advantage on sites where the wind direction is highly variable, for example when integrated into buildings. The latest prototypes work many more hours/years than the horizontal axis turbines, and has a greater efficiency overall.


Small Scale Wind Power They are small plants with nominal power between 0 and 20 kw and from 20 to 200 kw. The have the advantage of operating with wind speed less than those required by the large turbines. The vertical axis wind turbine has no tolerable maximum speed limits, the noise is almost zero and the wind is picked up from all directions. The low environmental impact and design which allow a greater versatility favors the use in any context (urban, natural and industrial). The production of the Guinepp turbine is divided into two lines: Street Wind (SW) lines, available in 3000w and 5000w. Residential Home Wind (RHW) line, available in a variety of versions, 1000w, 3000w, 5000w, 7500w, 10000w units.


Line SW (Street Wind) It was created specifically to capture the wind turbulence of moving vehicles while the other line was created to make the most of wind turbulence on the sites that allow, that is, wherever there is wind of at least 5 mph.

The Guinepp RHW Line of turbines have been designed to make use of wind speed as low as 5 mph and up to 160 mph. Motors are designed by Boeing to with stand extremely high wind speed with an extremely low failure rate with generators producing from 1kw, 2kw, 3kw, 5kw, 6kw to 10kw of pure green energy.
